Gil Brandt Talks Bucs And The Draft

November 4th, 2009

Gil Brant, affectionately called “The Godfather” by his comrades at Sirius NFL Radio, took a call from a frustrated Bucs fan Wednesday who asked what the Bucs might do in next spring’s draft and what Brandt thought of rookie quarterback Josh Freeman.

The caller hinted the Bucs may need a running back — which surprised Joe — when he said, “we are lucking out with Cadillac Williams.”

The caller first asked Brandt if the Bucs should draft a safety with their first round pick, which is the advice Monte Kiffin had for the Bucs.

Brandt said the Bucs should use their first round pick on a safety unless the Bucs  “are determined to draft a safety they should trade down as there are going to be good safeties in the late first round and early second round.”

The caller asked Brandt about Freeman. Brandt, architect of the famed Dallass Cowboys teams of the 1970s, said he likes Freeman but warned the caller not to expect much Sunday.

“I hope for the Bucs’ sake the Packers don’t watch tape of Freeman against Nebraska from last year. Nebraska blitzed him like crazy and trapped him five times.”

Brandt went on to say the biggest problem with rookie quarterbacks is sometimes they play on lesser teams which is not a good element for development.

“If you are not on a well-coached team, [rookie quarterbacks] won’t be able to pick up the blitzes and then struggle.”

Hhhmmm. A Dom Capers defense never blitzing? Nah, that’s won’t happen. Joe would be absolutely shocked at such a thing.

If we draft a S over a DL I will be convinced that Dominik and Morris smoke crack.

    ROTFLMAO!!!

  3. Mark Says:

I think we take one of our 2nd round picks and get a corner, get a DL with the first round pick

  4. BigMacAttack Says:

Ndamukong Suh would be my first pick. The Guy is a Beast. Hey is SGW94 out there? Steve, what do you think about Suh? If you get some time to watch his highlights it would be nice to get a professional evaluation on him. No way I’m trading down, best on board, first pick, my guy. Cody of the Tide is another big man for the inside. My second pick is Sean McDermott DC of the Eagles for Head Coach. I also agree second round pick on a CB or if Tebow is still there I’d take a chance on him. Everybody hates on Tim, but they said he threw 60 yards on 1 knee.

Joe, I’ve been pushing your site on the other blogs, trying to get more readers for you.

    Oh ya, GO LIGHTNING !!!

Thanks for the marketing BigMacAttack. Joe appreciates that very much!

I would take a DT as well. Giving huge money to a S is not a wisest decision. I am starting to think that you are a relative of Dom Capers Joe. The Packers D is one of the most overrated in the league. They have fed on lousy offenses. If you have a good offense, you torch them. So I am not worried at all about Freeman. 12 sacks through 7 games. Oh that Packers D is so scary. Please.

  9. Greg Says:

“The Packers D is one of the most overrated in the league. They have fed on lousy offenses.”

Eric S., are you kidding me??? Have you watched the Bucs offense at all this year????

  10. Eric S Says:

No I believe fully that the Packers D is very overrated and they have fed on lousy offenses. Since that is what you quoted, I stand firmly behind those statement. They got lit up like a Christmas tree by the Bengals and Vikings twice. I am not saying that the Bucs offense is good or mediocre at this point. What I was saying was that the Packers are not as fearsome as Joe keeps saying that they are. Maybe I’ll put in some question marks and exclamation points to make myself look smart!!!???

  11. Ron Nado Says:

To put it plain and simple , if it were me (which it is’nt) and I was worried about selling tickets and /or my qb situation/leadership situation. The choice is obvious, Tebow! Sorry guys hate on me all you want, but we all know what he could do for this team as a player and marketing . Him alone would be a huge boost on ticket/merchandise sales! Hell being the buisness men the Glazors are who knows if this is’nt already the plan. Last year we picked up Lefty as a SMOKE SCREEN, who’s to say we did’nt do this by drafting Freeman last year? Money is money period people, and Freeman is a small investment when you consider what Tebow can bring in………

  12. Joe Says:

    The choice is obvious, Tebow!

    What round?

  13. JoeBucsSteveCampbell Says:

Ron-Please stop being silly. I bleed blue and orange. The earliest I would consider Tebow is late 2nd round, and that’s if you’re a good team with an established QB. We have our backup/wildcat/streetball QB in JJ.

BigMackAttack-I love Suh. He can play the system we have now, and if we ever chaged defenses, he could play the 3 technique too. I’m not sure McCoy(who is a really nice player) could do that.

  14. Joe Says:

    LOL streetball quarterback!

BTW, scot loeffler (Florida quarterbacks coach) has even gone on record saying for Tebow to succeed in the NFL, he would need “at least” two seasons learning before starting. That’s Tebow’s own coach, not some douchebag on the afternoon radio that can’t even pull a 0.1 rating.

So why the hell would the Bucs (much less any other team) draft Tebow in the first round? You think the Glazers are going to pay for two quarterbacks pulling first round money? Also, as the old saying goes, when you have two quarterbacks you have none. Tebow as a third round pick? OK, Joe buys that. First round? Lay down the crackpipe.

Oh, and you could have a roster full of Gators, Canes and Noles and if the team isn’t winning, the Bucs won’t be selling any more tickets than they do now. Any owner who says he would draft a quarterback in the first round solely to sell tickets needs to be locked up in a padded cell. You draft the best player. You don’t draft a guy based on where he played his college ball.

  15. Ron Nado Says:

I’m glad you bleed blue and orange, but I do not to be honest. I know conspiracy theories are fun to joke about which is all I am doing. I like J.J. and have since the beginning, I think he could be a really good QB with the right surroundings. But any one who really thinks about our situation here in Tpa. has to be honest. Tebow is a no brainer! Drafting him even #1 would put more money in their pockets than anything , even the team winning out the rest of the year.
As far as drafting just off talent, well I would have to agree with you on being a 2nd round pick at best.

  16. Joe Says:

Tebow is a no brainer! Drafting him even #1 would put more money in their pockets than anything , even the team winning out the rest of the year.

Actually it would have the opposite effect.

By having both Freeman and Tebow (or McCoy or Bradford or Pike), both first round picks, on the roster, both can’t play at the same time. So the Glazers would be paying one of the two an eight-figure salary to pick his nose on the bench.

Meanwhile the team will still be losing by essentially pissing away one (two?) first round picks. Again, if you have two quarterbacks, you have none. Losing teams don’t sell tickets, no matter who is on the roster.

For every reason there was not to draft Josh Freeman in the first round, there are more reasons not to draft Tim Tebow in the first round for the Bucs.

    Third round, sure.

  17. Ron Nado Says:

    LOL, fun is’nt it?
If I were to actually draft a qb it would have to be Mccoy, or even whats his name Mcclausen from Noter Dame. We all know honestly that a team never would draft 2 years in a row a 1st round qb. Now 1st rd wide outs, that a differant story! (ask Detroit) LOL
I do think money wise Tebow would generate alot of money on any of our fl. teams simply due to all of the fl. fans.
But logically speaking you are right! (I don’t smoke crack though!) LOL
Well that brings us back to the question, who the hell do you draft? I know like many we should go after a big beast on defense, but what happens if now that were throwing out freeman for the rest of the year he stinks up the joint? I’m hoping he don’t and I know he has a big time arm, but what if? This could really hurt us for the future! Atleast they have been picking up some draft picks this year

  18. Joe Says:

LOL! Exactly. That’s what Joe tells people Ron.

But there actually serious, sober people out there who are preaching if not demanding the Bucs draft Tim Tebow… first overall next spring!!!

(Specifically, a local carnival barker who whores out his radio studio on Saturday mornings to anyone not named Joe Redner who has an open checkbook.)

  19. JoeBucsSteveCampbell Says:

Ron-Freeman stinking up the joint shouldn’t matter. The Bucs aren’t going to pick a QB high in the 2010 draft. Freeman is the horse they’re hitching their saddle on, like it or not. And he is going to struggle, make no mistake about it. He looked bad in the preseason, and he didn’t start getting regular reps until a month ago. And first year struggles don’t break a QB. Next season is where you hope Freeman makes his move to competent starter.

The 2010 crop of Quarterbacks is turning out to be a big bag of rocks. Bradford is brittle, damaged goods. McCoy has arm questions and throws bubble screens all game. Snead looks like trash. Tebow has bad passing skills. Locker is a one year wonder with a low completion % like Freeman was.

I think Clausen will go the highest if he comes out. He has NFL skills and he plays in an NFL offense, not a ridiculous spread.

  20. Dee Says:

Re: tebow? Let’s be honest here– he’s a runningback and lord knows we’ve got enough of those and all are solid. We don’t need the kid, in any position. We need defensive playmakers, return to the Bucs of yesteryear.

  21. BigMacAttack Says:

Tebow is an awesome leader and boy do the Yucs need that right now, but not in the first round. Suh is the guy, and only fools, like the Two Yutes at 1 Buc would trade that pick and pass on him. Someone needs to tell them it isn’t the Quantity of Picks, but the Quality. I’d rather have 1 Pro Bowl Stud in a Draft than 10 Mediocre Picks. Take Tebow in the Second round with the Bear’s pick. First, $h!tcan Raheem and his UnCoordinators. Second, Hire a real Coach (so I can keep my tickets). Third, offer Rachel Watson about $250K year to be the Season Ticket Holder’s director of liason. My Second round pick would probably be Brandon Spikes if he is still on the board.

  22. BigMacAttack Says:

Oh yea, why not offer SGW94 the position of D line coach. Why do we need 2 coaches now on the line. 1 line, 1 coach.

  23. J Lynch says Says:

Uncoodinators… very funny Morris is still the D.M.F.E.T.B.A Let me know if you want to know what that is BigMacAttack… Radio Raheem tee hee…

I have to admit, this has been one of the better discussions we have had here on your site Joe, it has been fun! I love it!
I’m glad to see more and more fans not only coming to this site but also getting involved. I have been on a few other sites and it’s just all negative crap. I enjoy this site most simply because I believe that the people visiting are true fans. It’s hard to find true fans living in a state filled with so many differant relocated people.(band wagoneers)
I think the Tebow talk is just the beginning and we’ll be talking about that for the remainder of the season and thru next season no matter where he goes.
I think it would be fun to do a weekly “You be the GM post” Joe
    What do you think?
Once a week you could post it and us fans can respond with a few short ideas. Then at the end of the season we could do a “you be the owner post” Since we don’t know if Dominik will be back?? LOL Just kidding
Either way it might be a fun idea to ask the fans what they think or their opinions ?It’s something that you can do to make it even more interactive with your fan base Joe. I only say this because you are already involved so much and seems like a good fit? Either way this discussion was fun!
Talk to all of you again soon!

  25. Ron Nado Says:

    No problem , my pleasure!
I think I have spoken with you in the past about how much I enjoy the site.
I was around then but not able to get online much due to long working hours. I can’t wait to check it all out this year!
Thanks for the great site! I think it’s about time to try a caybrew this weekend!
