General manager Jason Licht talks Jesus “Bobo” Wilson
There are a few reasons Dirk Koetter gets a lot of high-fives around One Buc Palace.
A big one is his focus on young players and his willingness to invest in developing them, and to give them serious playing time.
Frankly, it started in 2015, when Koetter was just offensive coordinator. Koetter stayed committed to Donteea Dye and Adam Humphries, and slowly grew the workload of second-year man Cameron Brate.
A lot of youngsters have thrived under Koetter’s watch. For Joe, that further highlights the head-shaking demise of Vernon Hargreaves.
Anyway, one youngster who flew under the radar this season was undrafted rookie receiver Jesus “Bobo” Wilson. Hard Knocks portrayed him as a dude with an attitude/ego problem, but the Bucs saw a guy with an edge who willing to grind.
He was on the practice squad until getting promoted to the roster just after Thanksgiving. Shortly after that on the Buccaneers Radio Network, general manager Jason Licht revealed Wilson was regularly “lightin’ it up” in practice with “amazing catches.”
(Joe instantly wondered who was covering Bobo?).
And Licht added that teammates call him a young Antonio Brown, the Steelers’ future Hall of Famer and six-time Pro Bowler.
Wilson caught the one ball targeted to him this season, a key 18-yard TD against Carolina in Charlotte (celebration captured by the JoeBucsFan.com photo team above).
Wilson is a nice story and could become a good bottom-of-the-roster guy, if he can turn his aggression into strong special teams play.

Not giving up on VH3 yet – not sure what happened but he had been fine until that Vikings game, then it fell apart – which I think happens to anyone that comes in contact with Ryan Smith.

Sure he likes to give young guys a chance unless your name is Peyton Barber! Dude couldn’t get on the field even if Doug Martin straight up punched Dirk right in the mouth. And no he didn’t give Bobo a chance, in a freaking lost season why was he not returning kick offs and punts.

Ryan Smith lacks coaching, he has closing speed and willing to tackle. If he is the worse corner you ever seen, you haven’t watched much Bucs football. I saw a better player towards the end of the year, watch the Saints and Panthers game, yeah Julio did him, but a large part of that was coach leaving his 1st year corner against one of the best

Ndog – I’ve been a fan for over 30 years, and Ryan Smith is the worst corner I’ve ever seen, ever. Rod “The Toast” Jones, when I was a kid, was traded away for almost nothing after being a 1st round pick and people said he was terrible – well he was an All-Pro compared to Ryan Smith. Anywho who thinks Ryan Smith isn’t garbage has no idea what they’re watching. Teams threw at the guy non-stop and always had success, always. If anyone can find the QB rating versus corners, there is no way Smith isn’t the worst of anyone who had starter reps.

Joe – Just a suggestion but you should have game watching threads so people have a place to post during these games. Also 50% of the posts will be people posting that the Bucs could have had X player if they didn’t take Y player and how dumb they are for not doing that – so it’s all Bucs related.

Since we are now on this article Rod I will paste my last comment.
I feel ya Rod. I watch more College Football than Pros by Far the older I get. Mostly because it helps me be more informed for the Combine and subsequently the Draft. However I mostly watch SEC and ACC games. I do watch other Conferences when I have the time but I make it a point to watch those two the most.
I am with you though on the RB situation. I think we are good with Barber and a FA, AS LONG as we fix the OL. Fix BOTH Lines and everything will fall into place IMO.

I think it’s easier to find offensive line help in free agency, but teams pretty much never let a defensive lineman go unless they just can’t afford it – plus defensive linemen are much more expensive than offensive linemen in FA, so to me drafting the d-line has to be addressed before anything else. Again not against an OT in the 2nd if it’s an amazing value, but everything else I’d picked would be on the defense since they need everything except LBs.

SB- The Bucs need to move Marpet back to guard and if Dotson is healthy then they’re just a center away from being OK. The problem is the Bucs always try to get a “deal” in FA instead of just going after the best player available and spending real money. I’m not on the Glazers being cheap bandwagon, but the GM is always looking to show how smart he is by signing mid-level guys and then if they play well he’s a genius – and so far he’s not a genius. Sometimes you just need to overpay to get the players you need. Jacksonville had to do that to get their guys in FA, no one wants to play in the God awful city that is Jacksonville, but they overcame that with money. The Bucs don’t ever do that.

Misguided….Bobo should have been running back kicks and Martin should have been benched for barber. This coach simply does not play the best players. Hasn’t developed any defensive players at all. One more year koetter will be out the door but I think licht will stay if he adds any kind of d line talent regardless of how good, can’t be worse that it was this year

I wrote in the other thread but will repeat it here – maybe with all the talk of Tomlin being out coached the Steelers will throw a fit and fire him – the Glazers are still obsessed with the fact they let him go, it’s the only reason Morris ever got his job. If I was in charge of the Bucs I’d call the Steelers tomorrow and ask if they want to work out a trade for Tomlin, do it now while they’re all emo.

The Glazers love star power – and Mike Tomlin is clearly a better coach than Gruden – seriously the Glazers should be trying to wheel and deal right now, do it while they’re all emotional and angry and everyone is saying Tomlin isn’t any good. What an amazing way to turn around things here – maybe it can get done for like a 1st or a 2nd, the Bucs wouldn’t have to pay what they paid for Gruden.

I liked the Jags in this game – it was a toss-up on if they’d win but I was leaning towards the Jags – but for those bandwagon riders I got some bad news, the Pats are going to wipe the floor with them next week. Nothing against the Jags, it’s just a matchup issue, the Jags matched up well with the Steelers, but the Pats aren’t going to be running toss sweeps and throwing deep on 4th and inches twice in a game – they’ll just have Brady run it right up the gut. Also Bortles will make Bortles look like Bortles.
Anywho if I’m wrong I’d sort of love it since watching home fans paying many hundreds of dollars for seats only to lose is one of my biggest thrills, but at the same time having a possible Jags vs Eagles or Jags vs Vikings SB is going to make for some awful viewing.

Jameis would be great in that offense, the Bucs could then sign Bell (they have plenty of cap space for the next couple of seasons), the Steelers are not exactly loaded with defense and while they’re not great, they at least are an attacking defense.
What a great idea. Joe let’s make this happen, text the billionaires in charge and ask about the rumors regarding the Bucs trading for Tomlin, that should plant the idea with them. Lets do this.

I don’t know Rod. Bell wants 18 Mil a year. ………6 mil more than he is getting now and 10 mil more than the 2nd highest paid RB which is Davonte Freeman at 8 Mil
Zero RBs deserve 18mil per yr! L’veon is THE BEST rb in the league no doubt but he benefits from having THE BEST wr playing next to him as well.

Actually the Dolphins made the playoffs in 2016 and the Jags in 2017. The Bucs hasn’t made the playoffs in 10 seasons. The Bucs are the worst professional sports team in the state of Florida.

Hawley is an OK Center IMO, but would rather see us pick up a real stud C who can provide top flight leadership to this OLine AND be a road-grader at the same time. Pamphile doesn’t cut it at all … either bring in a FA Guard to replace him or slide Donovan to RG & draft or grab a stud LT in free agency. Eventually we’ll need to replace Dots, and maybe Pamphile will be better by then, IF we re-sign him at all (he’s provides great OLine flexibility, but won’t win any blocking contests). Evan Smith is also a FA this year … I’d re-sign him if the price was low & if we cut Sweezy loose. We’ve got enough other problems to deal with for now.

SB – Bell won’t get $18mil, no one will pay that, but he might get like $14mil and say $30mil guaranteed. That’s what Martin and Gholston make, the Bucs can afford it if they wanted to do it. The Bucs constantly are near the top of the league in salary cap space, and so were the Jags until they decided to spend the money. Again you have to overpay to turn things around and yeah you’d be overpaying for Bell, but it’s really just a 2 or 3 year deal max and the Bucs will be in fine salary cap shape until Winston’s new deal kicks in. Also there are not any dominate defensive linemen out there to spend on, not that I’ve seen from looking through the expected FA list – so if you’re going to spend do it buying star players in an off year. To be clear I only recommend this IF the Bucs were to somehow get Tomlin, which again no one is talking about it’s just a scenario I made up.

Rod & SB … Forget Bell. RB is a priority need, but not at anywhere close to those numbers. Gut feel is that Licht will draft a RB somewhere between Round 2-4, AND re-sign Charles Sims (Koetter really likes him supposedly). Barber has a place, and Koetter seems to like Jacquizz also, so he’ll find a place in the stable I’m sure.

Actually Defense, Rod and I have been talking for a couple hours and Neither of us think RB is a priority need. We both think OL upgrades will create a better Run Game. Rod just wants Bell IF we were to somehow get Tomlin as a HC.

Defense – If Marpet moved back to G and Dotson was healthy, then your other guard would be Sweezy who is OK. I have zero faith in Hawley and having a center who constantly gets injured is a huge issue, which is the same issue with Dotson except when Dotson is healthy he’s at worst an average player – Hawley is way below average, which is why the Bucs moved Marpet to center in the first place. Pamphile is fine as depth but he shouldn’t be starting – he has more value as a swing depth guy. Ideally the Bucs could get a young tackle and not throw them directly into the fire and if they were a LT and better than D Smith they could move Smith to RT, or you simply have a replacement for Dotson since he’s getting near the end of his career.

Defense – Yeah as SB said I don’t actually think RB is a position of need, and personally I wouldn’t draft anyone at all. I’m saying Bell in my made up fantasy of trading for Tomlin – thus you get that Pittsburgh offense and in that offense having Bell would be a huge deal. In Dirk’s run it up the gut on every first down offense and then have the RB stay back and block on every other down, I don’t think anyone short of Barry Sanders would have much of a chance.

SB – I don’t agree on Barber, he runs tough but is a very basic north/south runner and as a starter was under 4.0 a carry – he also fumbles a lot – he lost the game against Atlanta for the Bucs and he fumbled at the goalline in GB, one they falsely gave to Winston (which is why Winston’s fumble stats are fake news) – Barber also almost fumbled away the Saints game as well. I think he’s an OK back because I don’t think anyone will do much with this offensive line and with Dirk coaching like he has since 2016. But in this Bucs offense I’m not sure you need anything special at RB, Dirk rotates backs, which I’m fine with, and Barber, if paired with a proven vet, should be OK.
But I’m willing to be proved wrong on Barber and I’d let him try to win the job from day one in camp against a proven vet. I think he’d be OK.

Actually Rod Munch, Tomlin would be great for the Bucs. But you know and I know..and the Glazers know..they won’t do this in a million years. Tomlin would turn our Defense around for a fact. SB – Yeah those are the “official” stats, but in that GB game he fumbled the handoff at the goal line but Winston got charged for the fumble since he was the last person in possession of the ball. He puts it into the belly of Barber who bobbles it, it was a clean handoff.
Barber started what, 4 games and he had 3 fumbles including a game loser – it’s a real issue. It can certainly be fixed and perhaps it was bad luck, but it’s something that has to be addressed.

I agree Mike, I just like for once the Bucs being the ones to take advantage of the situation and to do something outside of the box. They did once, with Gruden, but that was when Malcolm was still doing things and knew his time was short. I really don’t think it’s a money issue, it’s just a having balls issue.
Also I don’t think Pittsburgh would do it unless they were really in a deep depression, which they might be, the window to take advantage of them is very short – but I’d try.

Improvements in our OLine & RB positions are priority needs IMO Rod, but … not as high a priority as improvements to the DLine & Secondary. Watching these various teams in the playoffs has made me believe that we’re light years behind some of these teams.
D-E-F-E-N-S-E still wins championships IMO. Saints are an excellent offensive team, but Vikings’ defense is putting them in their place. Obviously defense needs to be our priority this year in FA AND in the draft, but I’ll bet the farm that Licht will focus just as much on offense. He’ll draft a RB & very possibly a OLineman in the top 4 picks … and most of Bucs fans will say what a great job of drafting he did. We’ll get middle-of-the-pack FAs signed to be our defensive improvements, and next year we’ll be signing the same tune we did this year. Licht will get fired, and more than likely the entire coaching staff with him, which will set us back to Square One again. I just keep hoping I’m wrong, but every playoff game I watch all I see is how really far away we are from being a SB contender. And to me, that’s more on the Glazer Boys & Licht than it is on this coaching staff.

Defense – I agree with you needs, for me as I posted before in the draft, we have 8 picks, it would be DL, DL, CB, CB, CB, S, S and then maybe an OT in there. Obviously we have no idea how the draft plays out, but that would be my goal. There is nothing that I’ve seen that stands out as a must have in FA, but those lists aren’t final as of yet. Also I’d have no issues if the Bucs used draft picks to get pieces, if they can get a corner who is say 26 or 27 for a 3rd or 4th who can start, then why not? I don’t think the Bucs are anything close to a lost cause, if you have a QB you have a chance, in particular if that QB starts ignoring his head coach when his head coach is playing for FGs.

Mike Tomlin would turn the Bucs defense around? Really? The Steelers problem almost since Cowher left has been defense, specifically pass defense … same problem the Bucs have. However … I like Tomlin and wouldn’t complain if we got him for maybe our (2) 6th rounders and our 7th rounder … doubt the Steelers would even consider that though.

Vernon Hargraeves is still a good corner, but he’s not built to play zone mentally. He like playing physical like he did in Florida.

Jameis may give them a chance, but he’s still got a lot of developing to do (hey, they are only scoring 21 points per game, and only 19 & change if you subtract what the defense added by itself). Not sure what it says about our T-E-A-M if the QB “starts ignoring his head coach when his head coach is playing for FGs.” In my past life as a fighter pilot, I can tell ya that insubordination like that would be cause for court-martial … true T-E-A-M-S just don’t operate successfully by everyone doing their own thing.

Nut…..I agree with you about the Steelers defense but under Tomlin they have an ability to close out game and they also play very physical and are disciplined and play fundamentals. The Bucs don’t do any of that so I would say that Tomlin would improve our defense.
That being said him coaching the Bucs is pure fantasy.

And BTW Rod, with 8 picks I wouldn’t hesitate to bundle a couple to move up here or there if that’s what it took to get someone we REALLY liked. Licht’s move up to the 2nd round to grab Ali AND Donovan was masterful IMO.

Defense – Well being a pilot in the military is a lot different than playing with a ball for a living. If the head coach is incompetent or coaches in a cowardly fashion – then Winston should take control of the situation himself since he’s going to be here for the long run, not Dirk. As we know at the end of the NO game Dirk called for Winston to play for the FG at the end, and Winston ignored him and threw the game winning touchdown. Obviously it wasn’t a freelance play, like Winston didn’t change the call, he just didn’t use the sideline as the first course as instructed, saw one and one coverage, and threw the game winner. That’s the same thing Favre would have done. Regardless football isn’t real life, there’s nothing at stake, they’re there to sell tickets and to get viewers on TV – so if you’re going to do that you need to be interesting, not boring, and being insubordinate in the face of incompetence is A-OK in my book.

SB – Yeah it’s my fault for wording it poorly, but it was in response to what Defense was saying. Yeah my father was also Vietnam, he was killed there, but I was in infant so I have no memory of anything. Before that my grandfather fought in Korea, before that it was WWI, and then the Spanish-American war, then the Civil War, the War of 1812 and finally the Revolution and my nephew is currently in the military as well. I need to apply for my sons of the revolution and sons of the confederacy certs, it’s sort of a cool thing to have and I’ve already done all the family history work.

My friend who is a Vikings fan and only sees the Bucs occasionally said he didn’t get my hate for Humphries, he said he’s just like Thielen. LOL! I said maybe if Thielen was a half foot shorter and was slower and couldn’t get open against anyone but 4th and 5th string corners, then he’s be like Humphries, but Humphries sure isn’t like Thielen.

Three of the four games in the 2nd round were good, basically again proving what I said before, the cupcake schedule the Titans played showed up on the field. The Bucs meanwhile beat the Saints, took the Falcons to the limit, should have beat the Pats except for FG kicking and, well, got blown out in Minnesota. But still, as I said above, 3 out of 4 isn’t bad.
Calling it now the Pats will destroy the Jags, and nothing against the Jags – I think they’re a very good team and their win today wasn’t a fluke, they just don’t match-up well with the Pats and the Pats defense will make Blake Bortles look like Blake Bortles.
The Eagles-Vikings game, ugh. I expect a very ugly dull game in which the Vikings handily win it even if the score is fairly close. Foles putting up 15 points, at home, against the Falcon’s defense really isn’t very impressive – and I’m guessing 10 points against the Vikings would be a lot. Short of the Eagles defense scoring points I don’t see how the Eagles can win, with the exception of some terrible weather, that can be a big equalizer.

cant believe that happened. one of the greatest plays of all time along with one of the biggest chokes on the missed tackle(reminded me of our team on that wiff).
Kind of hard not to root for a guy like Case Keenum who has been nothing more then a write-off.
Only wish it was us to make the Saints fans feel absolutely sick to their stomachs right now……..But hey, let’s self award our QB for shattering the confidence of their backfield in crunchtime.
I’m sure Winston was watching and hopefully licking his chops..?..er, fingers I guess.

I would love to be a fly on Payton’s shoulder after that last second TD by Diggs after a bizarre defensive mental collapse. All you have to do is bat the ball down or tackle the guy. I bet he’s whining like a 2 year old and I would enjoy every moment of it. I hope he has a breakdown during the presser.

Rod I think the Jags have exactly what it takes to take down the Pats. Brady is not the same under pressure, not even close and his receivers won’t be wide open this game.
Not only does the defense match up but the Jags including Bottles can run efficiently, keeping the ball out of Brady’s hand and shortening the game.
Hate to say it but i see a defensive Superbowl with JAX and MIN.
Only hate to see it because my Superbowl board gives 500 every score change.

I’m predicting the Jags to win.
It’s only gonna depend on their Dline being able to get at Tom Brady. If that can happen we’ve seen the Pats and Tom Brady get stuffed before and it can happen again. Not sure if the Jags are on the same level as the Denver, Baltimore, an NY teams that have done it.
And I’ll take Phily at home.

Alaskan – We shall see, I just think the Pats will do whatever works and be flexible with their attack, so I’m guessing they’ll try a power run early, then when Jacksonville adjusts they’ll switch their style, they are exceptional at doing that. For example a few years ago when the Jets had a great pass defense the Pats came out and ran it some ungodly number of times and barely threw the ball at all – they will look for any weakness and attack that. It’s not a judgement on the Jags, but short of them being the 2002 Bucs, I think the Pats at this stage can move and score points on most defenses. Then on offense the Jags showed me today they won’t stick to the run and if they don’t, if they have Bortles passing (and not doing run first passing) then he makes mistakes. Today he had a couple of fumbles and threw up some balls for grabs, just none resulted in turnovers. But the game will come down to Brady and the offensive style the Pats use and I think the Jags might be a year or two away from being elite, if they get there before their older players age out. I don’t expect the game to be very close – we’ll know by the end of next Sunday if I’m right or full of baloney.

I think the teams and the variables of each team make it next to impossible to predict who will be elite or suck in 2 or 3 years. Just as easy as you can book the Jags for another post season next year you can just as easily assume they could be 3-13 again like last year.
Team chemistry, injuries, ref calls, balls bouncing, coaching, momentum, motivation…etc… A lot goes into the success of a season. Players in the NFL don’t have madden rating. They can play like a 99 one season/game and a 70 another.

Alaskan – I disagree, in 1997 you knew the Bucs defense was going to be elite – they weren’t there yet, and they had a hiccup in 1998, but you know they were on the verge. The Vikings two years ago were the “it” team with a defense on the verge of being elite, last year they hit a bump in the road, but this year they have been the best defense in the league. Last year a lot of people said the Eagles would be really really good this year, and they were. You can always look at teams and make educated guesses about their future, so long as you look past their record. It’s why the Titans will take a huge step back next year, they didn’t beat anyone this year outside of Jacksonville when it didn’t matter, and with the Colts getting back Luck and the Texans healthy, right now I’d say they’re the most likely to finish last in their division.
Who knows if the Jags will make that leap to an elite defense – but they aren’t elite yet, and they need to be to win next week.

Altered……I think you make a good point. The AFC game will have to see Bortyles, and his team for that matter, not get forced into making mistakes. Pats are good at forcing those. But Brady doesn’t just show up and win. Look at his playoff losses and he played very poor games when faced against Defenses that were able to generate a lot of pressure. If the Jags can do that they’ll have a very good chance.

Some real great games today both kept you watching but at the end of the day neither comeback could quite overcome a somewhat slow start.Big Ben threw
for five TD’s and it sure looked like he would bring his team back.Breeze had a little rockier start but had a victory snatched away from him by the miracle in Minnesota. Keenum should replace Glennon as the highest paid backup at worst.

Rod those “bumps” you are mentioning is what im talking about as far as the unpredictability season to season. I’m not arguing about knowing what teams have superior coaching and talent. That doesn’t always mean that those teams will have successful seasons. Look at the Packers, Raiders, Broncos, Cowboys, Giants, Seahawks. These teams were all expected to make the playoffs or did last year.
About the only thing I can be sure of and helps me sleep at night is that the Browns will suck.

Hope you guys recognize that the Patriots team that just beat the Titans was nowhere near the same team that we almost beat. Belicheck has a incredible way of growing the team through the regular season & getting them totally prepared for the post-season. Pats aren’t the most talented team still standing, but Belicheck seems to always find a way of getting the very best out of each and every player. My hat’s off to him for that.

Yeah I noticed that Defense Rules…….Back when we played them they were having lots of problems on both lines. Hence their 2-2 record and why it was one of the few games our defense pressured the QB.
I’ll never forgive Dirk Koetter for not adjusting in that game. Our defense got us a three and out and a pick to start the game and our running game was gashing them at the start. Dumb ole Dirk just heaves the ball downfield not taking what they were giving us and somehow leaves us dominated in TOP. Everybody wants to blame the kicker but it was clear that Dirk got outcoached in that game.
Rarely do games(especially with this team) stick in my crawl for so long but that one sure did. A win in a game like that is how you truly change a culture. The other one that still chaps me is the Carolina home game when we had a chanse to turn things around and the team comes out unprepared, unmotivated and with one of the worst game plans on offense I can recall.
The next week at New Orleans still could have turned us around but I really didn’t care and if didn’t look like half the players did either.

or missed the package sets especially in how to call plays with it.
Nevertheless, the fact is that there’s only 2 or 3, if you include EP as a separate scheme, NFL style schemes. The date of the system isn’t relative to the effectiveness or use today. Yes there is elements that are from college football that is being incorporated into the three styles, actually 2. But that’s not the same discussion and it’s not what you’re or anyone else is talking about.
I heard Romo’ s comments and He’s not wrong at all. But you have to consider His position and that He played in the system. He’s critical of the way the scheme run by koetter isn’t doing anything to disguise the play. Not the overall scheme.
Most buc fans heard Romo and instantly hit the comments button to regurgitate his comments as if they were theirs. Romo is awfully good at predicting any scheme and teams plays. That’s just how much knowledge differs from joe fan boy vs pro’s. What fans believe isn’t predictable, isn’t the case for pro’s.
Which is why the NFL is about the best individual match ups not the best scheme. College ball is all about scheme. Which explains to the fan at home why the NFL style schemes are slow to evolve and conservative by definition.
I couldn’t get the original post comments update. BTW, I didn’t include you in the latter portion of the post. If you thought I did, then my apologies. I think it’s clear that I wasn’t but again if I wasn’t clear that is on me. I had several other posters in mind, you happened to have done what no one is did. Actually read or try to understand the system. Kudos.
