One and done?
A prominent Bucs beat writer believes if the Bucs lose to the Saints in six days, it’s hard to believe Dirk Koetter survives.
That’s the word from Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times. While he admits to his co-host Tom Jones on the “Rick and Tom Podcast” that he isn’t sure if firing or retaining Koetter would be a wise move either way, Stroud noted recent history with Team Glazer suggests if the Bucs lose to the Saints, it would be a surprise if Koetter’s returns in 2018.
In his hypothetical of the Bucs dropping their season finale, Stroud bungled several losing streak numbers for Jameis and Koetter, but the point was clear.
“They will have lost every game in the division. And I’m sorry, but it would be stunning at that point if the Bucs kept Dirk Koetter. It just would,” Stroud said.
“I’m not saying it would be the wrong thing to do. It might be the right thing to do. I don’t know. I just find it hard to believe that an organization that has averaged firing coaches every two years and the last guy that lost four in a row and the last guy to lose five in a row, they all got fired.”
Fair. The key here is if Team Glazer believes there is a quick fix. Given how the Bucs have lost so many one-score games, one could argue the Bucs just need better coaching on defense and a bit of tinkering on offense and all will be well.
If only a couple of small repairs will work, then why overhaul the entire organization?

The Dirk is done. He’s a good and decent fella…salt of the earth type from Idaho. That said…he’s in over his head. Just as there are only a handful of star quality NFL Qbs on the planet…the same goes for coaches IMO. Topped out at coordinator…no shame in that.

The only thing that I’ve been clamoring for many years is a President of Football Operations (with experience) to run the show. The Glazers have proven time and time again that they cannot effectively run the team, hire well, nor successfully delegate. Until we have that in place if ever; I’m not really sure if it matters at this point. Unless we get lucky and we hit on some draft picks and free agents soon, we will continue to be a really bad to mediocre franchise unfortunately.

I think it depends how you see this team. If the are the team we thought at the beginning of the year, a couple guys on the O line and few on the D line, than you have to believe that this team was far undercoached and personnel utilized, and the HC must go.
If you think we need almost a total rebuild, as would reflect a 5-11 or 4-12 record, you might keep this team, believing this team is basicallycrap anyway, you can keep Koetter or whatever you wish… but might as well stop paying attention to the team another couple years…and then they might be worth paying attention to again.
I tend to believe the former.

We are becoming the Cleveland of the NFC South, changing coaches every 2 years.
The Bucs are not quitting, and played both Atlanta and Carolina within an inch of their lives, with 3rd and 4th string players.
I say give these coaches another year

The only thing that may (emphasis on MAY) save his job for another season is that this team is still fighting. Outside of the first Atlanta loss this team has lost 4 straight by 1 score or less. Whether this speaks more of the players or the coaches I don’t know, but during a bad season it’s a positive to know that down the stretch these players are trying to win games.

And if they happen to get a win in last game all is well?
Unlikely to happen anyway because the Saints had the good sense not to fire their Super Bowl Champion coach after a few down years.

The teams attitude sucks. They play with a losers mindset. And they are unprepared weekly.
That’s not a small repair…….And I never gave Dirk a free pass for his 9-7 record last year……Thats because when the games actually mattered they choked against the Cowboys and then again against the Saints. And the
Cowboys weren’t all that good as they got bounced in their first playoff game. The Saints weren’t in the playoffs either.
The only thing last year taught me was this team left much to be proved. You add it all together now and you undenayably see an offense that has been below average since Dirk took over. He hasn’t produced the results they thought they would get when they hired him. He has simply failed.
This offense ain’t going anywhere under Dirk next year. If you believe it is I would like to know what evidence supports it.

There is talk there was a hand shake deal already with Gruden.But the Cowboys might change that by giving him $10+ a year contract.

Koetter playcalling and time management….perhaps some game plans and poor halftime adjustments. I believe he is a good coordinator and a good HC….but not both….he needs to delegate the OC & playcalling…..if he does that, I’d give him another year…..if he resists…..fire him for failing to realize his limitations.

So very well said. Crushed/nailed it. Payton is a great comparator to Gruden. Tom Benson didn’t panic when another team interviewed a coordinator…and now it’s paying off. A great draft this year hasn’t hurt.

I’ve said it before…Dallas is a strong possibility for Gruden now that the Cowboys fell short of expectations this season. Jerry would sell it like he did to Parcells several years back. Promises of imput on everything…a co-GM type gig with the Jones Boys. I’d say it’s more likely Gruden goes to Dallas than back to Tampa at this point.

All this talk about heart and hustle is a joke. Just go back to the first Panthers game and the following game at New Orleans………The team played with no intensity at all.
At the time those two games actually mattered because they had a chance to turn the season around. Who cares about all this heart when it’s not there when you need it?
You know in thos3 two games we basically had all of our starters healthy……The last two have been played with Skelton rosters. Our starters didn’t care when the games mattered. My guess is all this hustle we are seeing is feeding from players desperate to put good film on display now that they are seeing the field.
Give me a break with any professional team getter no a pat on the back for hustle anyways. It’s the lowest form of compliment you can actually give. It’s a losers compliment.

Tampa Bay was one of the most hyped team this off season. Just goes to show you do not “win” in off season… even if you pay a bunch of money to get DeSean Jackson and draft OJ Howard.
And no Jon Gruden will not be the answer. He won with Dungy’s team and failed miserably after that.
The real issue is that Winston is not the guy at QB. He gives the ball away way too many times.

DK had a winning season his first year! Only one losing season with a bunch of Injuries and we have lost the last three in a row by only three, and he loses his job? I just don’t see it unless the Glazers REALLLLLLY want Gruden back. No Coach worth anything would want to come here if they know that a losing season gets them fired! The Bucs have been competitive as of late. Players are playing hard for their coach! That speaks volumes. Just need to get rid of malcontents like Baker and DJax and beef up the lines! BOTH of them!

You can’t survive as a coach when you have that much talent on offense and finish the year 4-12. The owners have said in the past they don’t believe in bringing in free agents unless the team is playoff ready. Huge waste of money Baker and talent Jackson! This team has been a mistake filled mess since early in the season.

I can’t buy the argument that we have below average talent on offense.
The worst position on that side is RB and we have the player that the HC publicly lobbied for.
I also think that if Dirk stays his plan will be to get rid of guys like Sweezy and Sims but I think if a guy like Gruden gets hired he will find good use for them.

For those of you pining of more of the current regime, ask yourself has Winston really grown this year from last or from his rookie season? This is the main reason why Koetter was given the job…continuity with Winston from Lovie regime. If the answer in your mind is no, then the only option is to change the voice.
In year 2-3 you expect the most growth in an NFL QB, Winston never really showed us the kind of growth you anticipate with his caliber of player. His accuracy has been better since the injury but the fumbles/ball security/game awareness are his nemesis in year 3. Those are rookie issues. If you add that to the fact it is next to impossible to survive as a NFL HC if you close ANY season with 11 losses in the last 13 games.
The argument of you cant change HC every 2 years becomes less valid as we see the Sean McVay types rise. This equation equals your fired. He needs a Christmas miracle.

What do you tell the season ticket holders and luxury suite owners if you want to bring Koetter back? The team played hard? Everyone had them winning 10-11 games. They may have only been a 9-7 or 8-8 team talent wise but no way are they a 4-12 team! As for Winston the turnovers may not have been all his fault but if not his it is coaching.

Good point Bucnjim……The fact that the Glazers signed those free agents tells me the front office got the spending clearance assuring the Glazers those free agents were needed to get us over the Hump.
Not only has our season been a complete failure the free agents brought in haven’t made us any better in any part of the game.
I just can’t believe how Dirk supporters will just lower their standards(are these the same fans predicting preseason SBs?) just to cling to a 9-7 season. I’m just as desperate for a contender but common sense only shows that Dirks offense can’t get leads can’t score TDs and has been a complete failure. Fans gotta let go to the mirage that was the 9-7 season aided by a down year within the division.

No way Koetter should be back next year. Fans are tired of seeing the same ole nonsense year after year. This is Jameis’ third year with Winston, and this team has the best offensive talent I’ve ever seen. OL and Defense are underachieving as usual. If Gruden has any interest in coming back to coaching, the Glazer’s need to be al over him. He literally only got fired because we went from 9-3 to 9-7 in 08 and lost to the JaMarcus Russell Raiders and that was the sole reason we missed the playoffs. He could never find a franchise QB, and now one is already set in place. He has everything he needs to succeed and got to see a lot of things in that booth for the last 10 years.

The lowly Bears are 5-10. And the Bucs are 4-11. How the hell did that happen? Tampa Bay was one of the teams favored to make a deep playoff run this year after barely missing playoffs last year.
I don’t think I have seen a team fail in such a spectacular fashion after an offseason full of hype… the Eagles “dream team” 4-5 years ago comes close.

Guys the only solution to this problem is to get rid of Irk Smitty and possibly Licht. The guys have been lost by Irk. They would not play for him next year after the way he handled things this year. The Bucs need new leadership and a great motivator that will make them believe. There is enough talent on that roster to have won more than 4 games. Maybe next Christmas we will be singing a totally different Carol!!!! Merry Christmas to all and to all this season is almost over!!!!!

Fact is we weren’t as good as we thought we were last year……..The winning just clouded the fact that the offense(the reason Dirk was hired) was struggling badly………They had an offseason and choose spend mostly all of their investment fixing that side of the ball.
Maybe this was entirely on Licht, but my belief is that Dirk was involved with deciding that Doug was the RB we needed, deciding that a speedy receiver was where we needed to spend most of our FA money, deciding that Marpet moving to center would make us better, deciding that Benechoch was adequate depth.
The decisions are ruining this team……Whatever method Licht is using to help this team in FA needs to be eracaditaed from the process.
Reguardless, if your a HC and can’t get production from a guy like DJax you are obviously doing something wrong.

Man up Stroud. You can’t say it would be surprising if Koetter survives and then say I don’t know if it would be a wise move if they do. Give your opinion on keep him or let him go. This isn’t Koetter’s first year as coach of the offense. There has been no progression when we definitely added more weapons. JW has looked as good as ever evidenced by the last 2 games. I admit JW’s fumbles are way too many, but the majority of that results from him getting hit as he is throwing it. We aren’t talking about a QB that holds the ball for 10 seconds like opposing QB’s can do against our defense. He drops back and is immediately under siege. All 3 of JW’s fumbles were because of ridiculous pressure. Our O Line is the worst in the NFL. Moving Marpet from guard to center was mind-numbing. Marpet was fine at center but his greatest strengths are being wasted. He should have stayed at guard. Personnel decisions fall on the head coach at the end of the day and I just don’t see a turnaround by Dirk. I like Dirk as a man but not as the Head Coach.

I use to think it was a lack of talent. But now I see things in a different light, the problem is coaching. This team has talent, but the talent are not use right. Trying to convert Ryan Smith into a Safety. Trying to convert Ali Marpet into a Center. Not playing Jazz Rodgers and Peyton Barber enough. Not playing O.J.Howard and Chris Godwin enough. Even the young guys on the OL should have seen more action ( Leonard Wester and Caleb Benenoch). But what made me see the light, was George Johnson. George Johnson had 0 sacks with the Bucs, he started and played in a lot of games. He had two stints with the Bucs. He played one season with the Lions and had 6 sacks. The Saints signed him on 12-17-2017, and he has 2.5 sacks in 2 games. He even had 1.5 sacks against Matt Ryan Sunday, a QB that the Bucs can’t get near.

I’m not sure of the exact numbers but didn’t riverboat Ron struggle mightily his first cpl years before they became the first team in division history to repeat as champions. Dirk has many short comings but I believe he can fix his problems and create a consistent contender.
He needs to incorporate more of a west coast offense and not rely on the vertical passing game as much. Obv our d line needs an overhaul but if licht can address that along with a solid rb this team can do well.

If this team is a few pieces away from a wild card lol I’m sure teams already in the playoffs are thinking more like a few more pieces and we’ll get to the super bowl. Why are there so many shortsighted thinkers in the bucs fanbase. Dirk is a below average coach with poor game planning and management skills how does it take another year to see that. The other 3 teams in our division are already where we’re trying to get and people actually think if he’s given even more talent he could beat those teams without coaching his players up and making them tougher? DK did a good job settling things down after Lovie. He hasn’t coached JW well enough re: ball security. Offensive yardage gained has been up but scoring is too low when you have all of the targets JW has. DK’s lack of creative play calling in the red zone has been the reason the team is kicking field goals.
Yesterday’s fiasco at the end of 2nd half convinced me that DK isn’t playing to JW strength in red zone. The 2 running plays got nowhere and wasted time. You have to use JW’s ability to throw on the run in red zone, roll him out, run quick passing plays, too many drop backs and long developing plays.
DK had plenty of chances to work the offense to a team that could average 24-25 points a game, he dropped the ball and played too conservatively to get the team putting up points

Hey Ed……Correct me if I’m wrong but didn’t Winston have quite a few rushing TDs in the one year Dirk wasn’t his coach. That has been missing from our red zone offense under Dirk. That was also the year that our offense had its highest ranking.
Man that’s pretty freaking said when Lovie Smiths offensive game planning is more effective.
Give Dirk one more year? For what exactly?

Cam Newton is one of the worst passers in the NFL. But the coaching staff plays to his strength. Which is getting him out of the pocket, making him a dual-threat. And that keep defenses thinking and off balance. If he can’t beat you with his

Fact is BOTH would be wrong. Smitty & his position coaches are the best we’re had in a decade (since Monte). Talent on the defensive side of the ball is seriously deficient. Tinkering on offense won’t get it done either. Our OLine has some serious flaws, and not at all sure about the coaching there either. RB ‘stable’ needs a couple of fresh horses, and Jameis needs a new position coach. Let Koetter give up the OC hat with those fixes and we’ll be good to go.
Only one who needs to be fired is Jason Licht, the Architect of this Train Wreck.

Koetter’s been gone since we missed the playoffs yet again. That was way back in October for crying out loud. The road to Tampa Bay was paved for Gruden way back in July when they welcomed back, and into the ring of honor, get a clue. For all of you who hate Gruden, and say he won with Dungy’s team, eat crow when he wins with Koetter’s sorry ass team.

if J dub is MOST comfortable and accurate climbing the pocket and throwing on the run
then koetter should of designed the playbook with a screen type, freeze defenders and throw on the movement type offense

Jeff…I think Koetter is doing all he can to win. He isn’t taking over the top risks to try to pull something out of his hat or something of the sort. He is doing the best he can…and the results are what they are. Please…. I don’t think Koetter is a great HC… doesn’t seem to have the genius or the temperament for it. But the guy is an honorable man, trying his best to win games. I won’t take that away from him or even hint at such a thing.

Sounds like in true Bucs fashion we will fire Dirk with out handshake deal with Gruden, who will snub is for a better deal with the Cowboys, leaving us to scramble and hire a woefully unprepared and unqualified coach that likely got fired from a division 3 school last month. Seriously, this sorry of thing has happened here before.

Bucs are ranked 11th in total offense scoring 20.3 points per game, and 31st in total defense giving up 23.9 points per game. Do the math guys, Bucs are losing because of a very bad defense. In a perfect world Koetter trusted Smith to put a top 10-15 defense on the field and if he did the record would have at least been a playoff challenger.
But Smith didn’t. So what, Koetter, Smith and Licht have to go?!?! What about all the damn injuries guys, they had no bearing on the results? Come on now, let’s not start all over again!!!! I do think Smith has to walk the plank and Koetter needs to add an OC up in the booth. But please, let’s not reboot the whole damn thing again, that is shear madness and if it happens then you so called Bucs fans are just as impatient as the ownership and ya’ll deserve each other!

Oh He11, all I need to see is “Stroud” and “Jones” and I see poor reporting anyway. Yeah, I’d like to be in my fortys or fiftys and work for a dying newspaper, endlessly striving to hope my podcasts (chuckling), maybe (hopefully) get discovered by BFF (maybe he just doesn’t know it) Joe Buck and he has me on. Maybe I’d discovered and go to Chicago or Pittburg like for the last 30 years…Sorry, these men have northern roots, have never fit in here (my opinion) and are one reason why ONE newspaper in the land still can’t sell. It’s pretty sad when Joe Bucs Fan and the national beat guys beat these particular locals to ANY story at ALL. Tom Jones: Rather eat a steak at home by himself than go to Ronde’s farewell. YARDS don’t win ballgames; POINTS do however. Bucs offense is presently ranked #20, while the defense is ranked #24. Considering how many draft picks & quality FAs we invested in our offense vs our defense, I’d expect to have a much higher ranked offense than defense.

Hold on. So some of your suggestions are for Dirk to stop calling plays but remain Head Coach? Put the Yulelog done folks. What sense does that make? Dirk goes for it on 4th down when he shouldn’t, he punts when he should go for it. Clock management has been shoddy. Jameis is getting smashed before he even finishes the 5 step drop. Marpet to center was stupid as it wasted Marpet’s elite talent at guard. Personnel usage has been terrible. It would be literally stupid to retain Dirk as coach but take away playcalling duties. Any other coach would be better. Dirk’s strength is supposed to be his offensive playcalling. Dirk isn’t going to take a demotion to OC. The fact is both Dirk and Mike Smith need to go but Licht should stay. The talent is there. Heck, even if we are lacking on defense, nobody in this league should be able to hang with our offense. Josh McDaniels would be licking his lips if he came here. We need a couple DE’s and a center (maybe a tackle) and we should be just fine. We get crushed at the lines on both sides of the ball and that is why we struggled. It’s not rocket science to fix this mess.

Whoever is evaluating talent is not doing their job. Its easy to pick draft picks since we know its a crap shoot and mistakes are bound to happen. Finding FAs to help your team and good coaching is the difference between winning and losing. So as bad as cleaning house is the alternative is worse. For the Glazers not making changes means continued empty stadiums and lost revenue. At some point a black swan appears as it did with Dungy and turned the franchise around. We fans should be so lucky it happens again.

@ Defense Rules. Thanks for the correction, I misread the BSPN sort. Agree, I too expected better results, especially on the offensive side of the ball. No doubt everyone from the owners, to the coaches, to the players and finally to the fans are disappointed in this season. However, I still don’t think firing everyone and rebooting is the answer. It hasn’t worked over the past few regime changes, so why should it work now?
As a fan, I would rather suffer through the growing pains of building a perennial contender then short-sighted, impatient knee-jerk changes. Let the management lock itself in during the off-season, figure out what has worked and what hasn’t, make adjustments and move forward.
In reality though, we live in a micro-wave tech-savvy society now that’s very divisive. It’s so easy to criticize and ridicule others hiding behind a keyboard with expectations of instant results, and if we don’t get them, then someone must walk the plank. And I just dont’ believe that’s the answer.
