Season Over For J.R. Sweezy
December 19th, 2017The 2016 and 2017 J.R. Sweezy experiment is over.
His back held up but his expected game and nastiness did not.
Sweezy was in the postgame locker room last night wearing a walking boot and using crutches. Joe saw general manager Jason Licht and America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, come hug Sweezy as he was leaving the locker room and offer him words of encouragement.
Today, Dirk Koetter announced Sweezy’s season is over.
Sweezy was paid about $9 million for last season, in which he did not practice or play. He had a mysterious back surgery just after he was signed that March. Sweezy returned this year and took Ali Marpet’s right guard job while Marpet transitioned to center.
The controversial move didn’t seem to make the desired improvement, though it’s hard to tell because Doug Martin was such a poor running back, lacking vision, burst and looking just like he did in 2016. But film gurus like former Bucs tight end Anthony Becht aren’t high on what Sweezy delivered this season.
Becht also thinks Sweezy’s back issue has cost him critical flexibility.
So now what? Sweezy turns 29 before next season and he’s due to make $5.25 million and lacks versatility.
His nasty edge, per the Bucs, was supposed to wear off on those around him and, subsequently, elevate their play. Maybe it did, but Joe doubts that’s reality.
Joe would prefer to see the Bucs move on, draft or sign a stud center and move Marpet back to guard.
December 19th, 2017 at 5:04 pm
Sweezy over-paid, over-rated, look how well they did when he went out…..Joe is spot on about moving Marpet back to guard….
December 19th, 2017 at 5:07 pm
Time to waive him and move on
December 19th, 2017 at 5:08 pm
Agree with Tom & Joe, but the problem is the same as with most positions, finding a true “stud” to plug in.
December 19th, 2017 at 5:13 pm
Dude should be arrested for theft and Licht should be arrested for being an accomplice.
December 19th, 2017 at 5:15 pm
I said he wouldn’t play 16 games this season. But he’s set for life off the Glazers money.
December 19th, 2017 at 5:16 pm
Another “See the Licht” moment in free agency…he’s an above average scout with a knack for finding LBs in the middle rounds…not a visionary with the ability to shape an organizational culture.
December 19th, 2017 at 5:17 pm
Time to start raiding practice squads….
December 19th, 2017 at 5:18 pm
Jason Licht will bring him back next season, and pay him the full $5.25 Million.
December 19th, 2017 at 5:21 pm
Would like to see Billy Price in the 2nd round
December 19th, 2017 at 5:23 pm
I am a Licht supporter but this was his second biggest goof up. Sweezy was a waste of money, time, and a roster spot. Good riddance!
December 19th, 2017 at 5:23 pm
Yet another failed experience along with
Djx- I’ve cried about since hard knocks
Dm – JOE TOLD US SO
Marpet- the most disappointing move
Gmc- yes him, not moving to 34 DE correctly
Ward- I’m at my wit’s end with him
Ryan smith- although he blows but I have much more respect for him than Grimes any day. Smith had a knee capped bulging out his leg and still shut out JJ
December 19th, 2017 at 5:29 pm

Sounds like Joe Hawley to me too bad his knees are gone. I like joe.
December 19th, 2017 at 5:30 pm
Sweezy will go down as one of the most over-paid lineman free agent signing in the history of the league……..amazing
December 19th, 2017 at 5:30 pm
Dm looks different. He looks like a crack head now
December 19th, 2017 at 5:33 pm
DM…anyone catch him with a notepad looking like he was taking notes last night….whole lot of move along nothing to see hear on this roster….
December 19th, 2017 at 5:42 pm
Dm notes should only be ” drink milk asap”. ” Application of chap stick on commercial break”
Those drugs smoked Dm. Crack put him the pipe and lit the 🔥
Sweezy looking equally bad without the drugs is worrisome

Joe,
I am waiting for an articlethplaining why Buc fans are not upset about the loss. As Victor Mather’s pointed out in the New York Times, the 4-10 record is not on Winston. So Joe, how do you explain why Buc fans are not upset with the loss?

I’d say bc the last few night games have been blow-outs with the captain of the always quit crew leading the charge. Last night was competitive and we didn’t get completely embarrassed plus they all played well.
I’m not upset about the loss.
December 19th, 2017 at 6:06 pm
^^ Because we looked competitive against a good team and JW looked sharp! Not getting embarrassed on MNF was what most of us were hoping for! Once again things didn’t go out way (fumble bounces and PI calls/no calls) and we lost another close game to a quality team.
Our D needs a coaching and players upgrade!
December 19th, 2017 at 6:10 pm
offer to renegotiate to near vet minimum deal or cut him… one position player with no upside
December 19th, 2017 at 6:11 pm
@Joe … “The controversial move didn’t seem to make the desired improvement, though it’s hard to tell because Doug Martin was such a poor running back, lacking vision, burst and looking just like he did in 2016.” Nice touch Joe. I was afraid for a second that you’d actually make the article about Sweezy, or heaven forbid, about the GM who brought him here, but you came through and saved the day by nailing Martin.
@AlteredEgo … “Time to start raiding practice squads….” Been preaching for Licht to do that since after Game 8, in the hopes that Bucs could find that Diamond-in-the-Rough on some other team’s practice squad. We could’ve gone the ‘Try-Before-Buy’ route on quite a few DE and/or DTs; maybe even several CBs or Safeties. But alas, was not meant to be. Might’ve involved some actual work on the part of our apparently missing-in-action GM. Too busy making sure that Koetter & Smitty continue to support the regime & serve as appropriate scapegoats.

The guy was a manbeast at Seattle. The back surgery and injury did him in

I won’t speak for other Bucs fans but I went numb after elimination…. But how can u be mad at that preformance it’s perhaps is our best primetime game in a while

It never ceases to amaze me.
Self proclaimed “Fans” hate every member of the team
Sweezy was a little off his game this year.
Of course he was! He missed an entire year of football!!!
The guy suffered horribly, in Back rehab.
All to get back on the field.
Sure, he showed a little rust. He also showed the speed and pulling ability that made him an elite Guard.
He was the Bucs best guard this year- by far.
So now he breaks his ankle- and posters here act like its some kind of anomoly.
Its much more likely for on O Lineman to get hurt, and miss games
Than itbis that he will play –
December 19th, 2017 at 6:49 pm
Me thinks the entire training/medical staff needs to be replaced. Either that or we have a lot of WIMPS on our team.
December 19th, 2017 at 6:51 pm
I’m not sure he was the best guard on the team and at 7mil per year he’ll to the naw
December 19th, 2017 at 7:01 pm
It is really freaking sad that most fans are content with our team just not getting embarrassed.
I was very disappointed in that game where our defense simply could not stop the Falcons all night. Most of our stops on defense came via pentalties and when Ryan missed wide open receivers.
The missed tackles were everywhere. Our defense looks so bad when we bring in backups that weren’t expected to play. These guys just are not prepared well enough. Missed assignments seen all over the place. Why is this team so poorly prepared that they don’t know their responsibilities?
Winston looked good Barber ran hard the Oline held up……That’s about it. Brate does well But is garbage in the clutch, he dropped an easy TD vs New England and has dropped critical third down plays all year…….Stop going to this guy on third down. It’s absolutely demoralizing to the whole team. They are treating him like a possession receiver…….it hasn’t worked all year and better coaching would have him on the sidelines on critical plays, not calling his number.
And forget that ref slipping…….Somebody please tell me how many plays we ran with well over a minute on the clock? It looked like 3 to me minus the spikes……..That’s was awful use of that final minute+.
If you can’t use the sidelines then you need to look for the middle of the field in the 20 yard range……Those eight yard passes wasted too much clock. We played that thing for a FG all day………..And yeah, it’s asking a lot to want better then a long field goal try there…..but it’s something that winning teams and winning coaches are prepared for and succeed in.
We are just a losing azz team with a losing azz coach who don’t know how to use their players.
December 19th, 2017 at 7:02 pm
I dont think Sweezy has been horrible like you guys think. Lol PFF has his run block rating as high quality and his pass blocker rating as high quality, but his overall rating as poor? Some1 explain how that works
December 19th, 2017 at 7:13 pm
When Sweezy was with Seattle he proved he was worth the money because he played an intense and championship brand of football.
The problem is he was feeding off of a Line and team that had a cram-the-ball-down your throat mentality. We don’t have that mindset for our offense. We are a one dimensional offense that’s usually scared to attempt a power run on third and 1……….We have built this team to win with offense and that is never go ing to happen if this Oline can’t physically take over a game when needed.
We don’t have the coaching that’s been able to produce that type of mindset. It’s a problem that needs to be adressed or this offense will continue to stall game after game………I’m sure if we get the right coach in here he would want @ guy like Sweezy around believing he could get more out of him.
December 19th, 2017 at 7:35 pm
All valid reasons that I appreciate having a good football discussion about with Buc fans.
A reason to be upset: After the QB played a flawless game we still lost. Atlanta is a top ten defense that Winston shredded.
December 19th, 2017 at 7:37 pm
Move Ali back and put Hawley in at center…the way it should have remained. Now that Hawley is healthy, he has his strength back.
December 19th, 2017 at 8:10 pm
To all the haters… #93 is apparently going to be the only buccaneer at the pro bowl… #facts
December 19th, 2017 at 8:14 pm
Yeah moving Marpet back to Center really needs to happen. It’s part of the reason Dirk needs to go IMO……..If he stays here I cant trust he will make the right decision there. Part of his plan could be to cut ties with Sweezy too and I think that would be a mistake.
Did Phampile switch sides from last year? There has been something wrong with his play this year. He was solid last year and has been anything but this year.
The whole offensive line as a unit has just not progressed. They were young and had shown promise in 2015. Young lines like that are expected to gel and takes strides year to year…….There is no excuse to go backwards. Its been a complete lack of either evaluation or perpetration or planning or a combo of all of that from the front office. Not sure if Licht or Dirk gets most of the blame for that unit not living up to expectations but they need to be replaced so we can get whatever is needed to get the most out of that line or properly get the personal/game planning needed.
It not just that the line hasn’t done well……it’s because they have shown obvisous signs of getting worse which just should not happen when only young players have been inherited and used there.

Bucs fans are not disappointed because they expected the Bucs to lose last night. They are elated because the Yucs did show some heart in their lost.
December 19th, 2017 at 9:34 pm
Lakeland, I’m not going to relegate myself to that type of a standard. I expect my team to be able to beat their divisional opponents when they play at home.
Well coached teams figure this out and don’t get rolled over by a running game they should be prepared for.
Be it right or wrong I will never expect my team to look like amateurs in the tackling game missing too many to keep track of.
You can take their heart and hustle and effort and any other adjective you wanna use…….you can mix that with the kicking and injury excuses and any other excuses fans have and you can stick it up your rear.
We got swept by Atlanta and couldn’t stop their offense for eight quarters. We played like a bunch of p***ies……….Get this feel good BS out of my face with this 4-(better find a dam way to win one) team.
December 19th, 2017 at 10:12 pm
Wow! Getting an accurate injury report on Sweezy is rare! We know more about the Roswell UFOs, Big Foot, Skunk Ape, the exact location of the Holy Grail, the true identity of Jack the Ripper, and Stonehenge more than we do about that guy. Well, at least he had a nice #PaidFloridaVacation.
December 19th, 2017 at 10:29 pm
u said before the season Easy Sweezy was good for maybe one or 2 seasons if that. With a mjor back injury, you never recover and he probably tried to over compensate a lot with a few vet tricks. They only go so far and last so long. You guys talk about Martin a lot but Sweezy took’em to the bank too!!
December 19th, 2017 at 10:33 pm
Just noticed part of post is missing
“ its more likely for an O lineman to miss ganes due to injury,
Than it is that he will play in all 16 games.
Concussions, Torn ligaments, and broken bones are todays NFL. Few players play all 16 games.
December 19th, 2017 at 10:36 pm

IMHO we will be drafting one of the following six players in the upcoming draft:
Bradley Chubb
Minkah Fitzpatrick
Saquon Barkley
Arden Key
Derwin Jameis
Quenten Nelson (who could instantly replace Sweezy and be a beast)
**************

Team is just not that talented. Another year of rebuilding unless we make a change at head coach

Loss not Lost. I understand it is difficult posting on an iPhone. If you do not know, no shame. I learn every day.
I want to tell you about a Buc fan. Where you see losers, I see potential. I do not believe Koetter is the answer. Many, that support Koetter. see the writing on the wall, but they are not ready to admit it. I am happy for Jameis Winston but very sad for the lost because it reflects on the leadership of the team. Which head coach would not have fired Mike Smith? The decision belong to the Glazers.
