Koetter Shares Peyton Barber’s Winning Grades

The Buccaneers’ best running back may not be good enough to start for Dirk Koetter, but he’s winning on the team’s internal scorecard.
Koetter shared a bit from his spreadsheet this afternoon at One Buc Palace.
Peyton Barber, the guy Koetter wouldn’t start yesterday against the Lions despite overwhelming evidence that he deserved the nod, was producing at a 75 percent rate. Per Koetter, Barber had 12 carries with eight efficient runs and one explosive run.
Martin had 10 runs, four efficient and a fumble, Koetter said.
The head coach also lamented that Martin’s first-half fumble came with the Buccaneers in field goal range. For those who forgot, the Bucs lost to the Lions by three points.
Koetter was non-committal as to how the running backs will split time against the Falcons on Monday Night Football.
“We’ll figure it out what we think is the best rotation for Atlanta,” he said.
Yesterday, Joe took a believe-it-when-I-see-it attitude on what Koetter actually would do at running back. Joe’s taking the same approach for Monday.
It’s ridiculous to start Martin, but, well, you know.

I agree that barber is the better runner in that back field but it was also his inability to block that led to Jameis’ strip sack. He should be getting more playing time but until he can pass block better, he shouldn’t be the lone back.

@Zach <- yep but you can fix that by putting in Sims or Dougie on 3rd down. The point is that Peyton is the more effective running back.

I think DK wants to get fired. I said this months ago. Even his press conferences he seems to be so blah. He dont aeem like a coach that will fight for his team or make the choices nessesary to put the team in the best position. The whole doug thing is the perfect example. I rather have a coach with passion that wants to be there and be willing to do whatever needs to be done to win. To hell with loyalty. If he wanted this job these are things he would do.

When we drafted Howard one of the plays I thought we’d run a lot is a simple TE screen. I surely thought we’d be getting him the ball underneath more on YAC type plays. He’s obviously be blocking for us a lot so it’s the easiest way to quickly catch a D off balance or throw a wrinkle at them. Play action with him dropping into the flat for simple completions where he can get YAC.
I hadn’t seen it all year until yesterday; and it was an EZPZ 10 yard gain. What do we know though? Let’s keep targeting Djax in the red zone lol.
As for Koetter’s scoring system – it sounds like he should scrap that sh1t and stop using it.
For one – it has no category for the biggest thing barber does better. When hit at the LOS or close to it; Barber can still typically get 3-4 yards; whereas Doug will get 0-2 max. Barber pushes through contact and falls forward. Over the course of an entire game that can add up to 20-40 additional rushing yards (1-2 yards per attempt X 20 attempts); and more 3rd and shorts vs 3rd and longs.. but even beyond that Barber is making more plays lol. it’s just insane that Doug started.

This isnt rocket science. The nfl is a copycat league. The short passing scheme is in because of the lack of good off lineman and the health of the qb. All the top scoring off use short passing routes to beat the pass rush and exploit the pass defenders in isolation to create yac yards
If brady and brees were qb for koetters 7 step drop schemes, both would be broken in half and retired last year

I haven’t seen the tape, but I saw several times at least live where he was really awful in ppro. Gotta do both or you can’t play.
Devonta Freeman consistently got 60%-70% of the reps (plays) during his time at Florida State despite rosters that included about four backs that would play in the league, because he (1) enrolled early and is smart–learning the plays, formations, protections and (2) he worked at every element of the craft, including ppro.

This sounds like a coach that needs public approval before he makes a move. That is not what confidence sounds like folks.
Couple Martin’s fumble with Howards and the Bucs lost two fumbles in FG territory and lost by 3. Insane. In the sense that it happens every week and the Bucs keep expecting a different result.

I’ve said it all along. This Buc team..Buc coaches..do not show the passion needed for Wins. When I listen to DC pressbox Smitty talk, its as if he’s some sort of Robin Hood in Tights merrily smilin along. No passion whatsoever. And Dirk just looks confused. Like he does not have a handle on his team. I just don’t see it from the players either. No Bravado..No ..Lets do this attitude. I look at other teams and they got good and bad players just like us. Its gotta be the coaching.

I just love watching other younger QBs ball out and then the bucs game cuts on and its a pick or a fumble. We shouldn’t be complaining anyway, we got a winning season last year. That’s enough winning for 10 years.

Keeping Martin doomed this season.
Licht is too nice.
To be a good GM, you must be logical and objective.
Keeping Martin, and not signing 2 DE’s and drafting a 3rd doomed our season.
Beckwith, Godwin, Evans and Howard are all GREAT rookies. All staring caliber players in the NFL.
But, If we had drafted a DE instead of Aguayo, we would be winning games.
If we had traded back instead of drafting Hargreaves, thereby getting another 2nd rounder, and using it on a another DE, we would be great right now.
We suck because of a few keys mistakes.
I believe in acquiring 2nd round picks.
Next year, I want us to trade back 2 or 3 times in the 1st round.
Try to get 1 late first rounder and THREE 2nd rounders.
Then we can get 2 DE’s, an OG, and a new CB.

Very few DEs excel in their first year, and just signing 2 DEs in free agency wasn’t a solution either. First, the right ones have to be available. Second, they have to be willing to come to Tampa.
It’s not just a matter of throwing money at them.

I think its ridiculous to anoint Barber as the team’s best RB based on a couple of games. Too small of a sample size. That said, its obvious that Martin won’t be returning if for no other reason due to his age and salary. The season is lost, so let’s keep starting Barber and see how good he really is.
