Dirk Koetter Talks Practice System
December 8th, 2017Interesting peek inside Buccaneers practice at One Buc Palace this evening.
It came from formerly winning head coach Dirk Koetter himself.
Speaking on the Buccaneers Radio Network, Koetter was asked by a fan about the slow starts that have plagued his Bucs offenses.
Specifically, Koetter was asked what, if anything, he has done differently in practice to remedy these slow starts. Tampa Bay is averaging 1.6 points on opening drives of games. That’s very poor output.
Koetter said practices have been status quo is it relates to addressing slow starts.
“We have a practice philosophy we believe, I believe, is a tried and true philosophy,” Koetter said of his highly-detailed plan for practice, calling it “NFL-tested for many years.”
“Early on in every practice we have a little no-huddle period offense and defense. … to get the guys thinking about fast starts and playing fast.
… I believe you’ve got to have a system and stick to it.”
Interesting.
Joe doesn’t have a problem with Koetter sticking to his practice plan. Joe has a problem with the game-day results. The slow starts have been too consistent, though the Bucs busted their slump last week with a beautiful touchdown drive to start the game in Green Bay. That’s a start.
Do all you want in practice. Adjust during the games. This offense is too talented to have been so impotent out of the gate.

“Adjust during the games.”
That seems to be Koetter and Smith’s biggest weakness. And is precisely why neither should be employed by the Bucs in 2018.

So what you are saying is this team actually practices? Hmmm.

I really think Dirk does not have an adjustable gameplan and doesn’t try to take advantage of what the other team is doing.
This really stood out to me starting on Thursday Night when we were opening up big holes against the Patriot and there was no reason to even throw the ball, let alone try and chuck it downfield.
I don’t care what your attack plan is you absolutly must take advantage of what they are giving you and force them to adjust what they are doing on defense. Especially considering our defense gave us a three and out and an INT to work with there yet we got dominated in time of possession in the first quarter. That was one of the poorest coached games of the year though you could argue the following week was even worse.
I’ve been waiting for a reason to forgive our coach for that abomination and it won’t be this year…….not interested on how great our game plan is when our season is being flushed down the toilet.

When Koetter was calling plays he was always sitting on the bench with the players / Jameis Winston noses in the replays and playbook. Constantly working one on one with the offense. I really had high hopes for Koetter being a head coach but two things are killing him…the offense regressing and most of all….his b.f.f’s scheme that is killing the entire team and taking offensive opportunities off the clock.
Lets be real, had Aaron rodgers played in Green Bay, they would have pulled him in the 4th quarter along with half the starters. Smith is top priority to be replaced in my book.
I’m not sure if Koetter will ever be the play caller he once was with the extra responsibilities. In my perfect Bucs dream world, they hire John Gruden and Koetter offers to go back to calling plays. Promote Hayes to DC and draft OL, DL and corners who can play press coverage.

I been saying all year, we make 0 adjustments in games which is part of our issues. Another issues is that we tend to play better in a no huddle offense but yet we barely do it, why?

Famous last words…..Go Bucs!

This is Dirk’s and Smitty’s Achilles Heel. When things are this bad and have been, you don’t practice/prepare the same way and expect different results. That is the well known definition of insanity.
When you’re winning — yes.
But not when you’re 4-8, your defense can’t stop a little old lady in a wheelchair with her brakes on, and the offense is marginally better than when Arroyoyoyo was the offensive coordinator — with all this talent.
Dirk — you are asking for a pink slip with that stance.

Hold up, the offense was a little better with Arroyo calling the shots?????? Please tell me that ain’t true

December 8th, 2017 at 7:17 pm

As bad as mike smiths defense has been he’s at least had a a handful of strong performances that didn’t mean anything bc the offense shat the bed. Lovie never had many competitive games when he was with the Bucs

@Dirks Great Granpappy
Literally the only times this defense has looked good at all has been the games where they get turnovers. Other than that Smith has been straight garbage this year.
December 8th, 2017 at 9:34 pm
Shouldnt have taken training camp off Dirk. That part of your tried and true is whats got ya fired in a few weeks.
December 8th, 2017 at 10:08 pm
And he needs to apply that in the game and come out in a no huddle , he did exactly that in the preseason and the offense looked great. Then the season started and he went turtle

Hey guys
Please HELP! Which episode and approximately what time is it of Hard Knocks where that song Part One: Hey No Pressure by Ray Lemontagne plays and it has Mike Smith walking walking W/ Cam Lynch and he’s saying “It’s not that hard dude, it’s not that FING hard” and it has a lot of Koetter dropping f bombs while the song plays too?!?! Any help would be greatly appreciated
Sorry Joes and guys for being off topic, but I have to know and it is Bucs related….
December 9th, 2017 at 12:03 am
it is the locker room…..someone needs to step UP !…other than 3 or 93…and go 99 on their azz
December 9th, 2017 at 1:09 am
Falcons when coached under smith started fast in games and second half would die out , starting to think since I did not follow them closely it was to not adjusting and opponents did.
December 9th, 2017 at 3:09 am
Dirks Great. That’s actually a good point. Mike Smiths defense does seem to show up and give us a chance every now and then. Issue is concistency, who knows what the defense is gonna do Week in week out. Still would rather have Mike Smith than Lovie 9 Times out of 10. Still doesn’t mean it’s a good option.

I concur. Not the Gruden part though. 😉
