Calm Jameis

Settled down.
The Bucs are just rotten at fast starts. In fact, the Bucs are better known on offense for no-starts.
But last Sunday as Joe was watching the Bucs on their opening possession at historic Lambeau Field, Joe actually witnessed the Bucs score a touchdown on their first possession.
Joe nearly choked on his bratwurst.
Joe always had a hunch — nothing more than a guess — that part of the reason America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston started games slowly, which in turn meant the Bucs offense didn’t get off to a good start, was that Jameis was way too hyped.
We all have seen Jameis in the middle of a moshpit before a game getting his teammates on point. Looks cool but Joe had a sense that carried over to the field in a bad way in that Jameis was too fired up.
Joe may have been onto something from listening to the words of Bucs offensive coordinator Todd Monken yesterday, He was asked if Jameis was collected at the start of the game.
“I sensed it as well,” Monken said. “A lot of people have talked to Jameis about that. Guys that are high-strung, competitive guys get fired up and you can see it in their body language and their footwork. I thought he did have a calm demeanor [at Green Bay]. I thought that showed in the way he checked the ball down, which he did early in the game. They gave us some looks to check the ball down, so that was part of it. He did a very nice job of assessing what we were getting and [knowing] where to go with the football early in his drop.”
Look, Joe loves Jameis’ passion for the game and his drive and eagerness to compete, his desire to overcome adversity and to win. It is clear he does this too much. He too often tries to be the hero; too often tries to make a play that isn’t there and it blows up in his face.
You never want to extinguish an inner fire like Jameis has, but that energy and passion needs to be channeled. Especially coming from a guy that touches the ball on each offensive snap.
Once Jameis manages to harness that energy, eating W’s will come.

#3 was cool on the first drive….then I noticed on the sideline after the score right back at his hyper cheerleader mode…..save dat chit for the post game locker room……..grow up…you are in the NFL now….stay focused

Someone else has noticed other than me!!! Yay!! Jameis played lights out on that first drive in GB. I noticed a Fitzpatrick like approach from him. Wasn’t too hyped, wasn’t too low. 4/5 and a TD on that drive I believe. That’s how we need him to play through 4qts.

3 years in the league, 2 years of college ball and the “hyped up” starts thing is still an issue?…should be fixed now, no?…like his accuracy issues and bonehead fumbles and ints, I think this will never go away…wishful thinking that he becomes Joe Montana and scores on the first drives in the future…

I was watching the game with a couple of former pro and college players and all of us were marveling at the soft touch on Jameis’ passes on that opening drive. It was a foreign look to us when Jameis is throwing… nice soft touch, dropping passes into to spots rather than firing through them too high. It was refreshing… and a little too short lived. Hopefully that was a glimpse at a guy starting to get the nuances of the position a bit more.
