Five Bucs Who Should Be Shopped Before Tuesday’s Trade Deadline

The state of the Bucs and their deplorable 2-5 record can be interpreted many ways, but there is an absolute that could be — and likely should be — addressed before Tuesday’s trade deadline.
We all knew the Bucs had an M.I.A. pass rush entering yesterday’s game against the Panthers, but somehow it hit rock freakin’ bottom.
Cam Newton attempted 32 passes and the Bucs didn’t register one quarterback hit.
Tampa Bay has just two sacks from defensive ends all season, and the team has a paltry seven sacks through seven games, worst in the NFL. The Bucs are desperate for live bodies on the defensive line, and Joe would love to see the Bucs attack that immediately. Take a chance before you are handcuffed in next year’s free agency and draft.
Here are five guys Joe believes the Bucs should be shopping for any kind of defensive line help by tomorrow’s trade deadline:
Evan Smith – The 31-year-old versatile guard/center is sharing snaps at left guard with Kevin Pamphile. Both guys are in contract years and the platoon makes little sense at this point in the season. There’s a scarcity of solid offensive linemen around the NFL, and perhaps a needy team has a buried defensive line prospect they’d cough up for Smith.
Doug Martin – Whatever you think of Martin, his NFL shelf life is nearing its expiration date. He’s not the player he was in 2015, and he turns 29 in January with nearly 1,100 NFL carries on his tires right now. Maybe there’s a GM out there who is a secret Martin fanboy and would part with a legitimate defensive lineman. Martin’s massive contract likely stands in the way of any trade. But maybe there’s a swap out there for an equally expensive D-lineman to take off someone’s hands.
Joe Hawley – Hey, if nobody wants Smith, then moving Hawley is just as good. He’s healthy and has put back the weight he lost last year, good weight. There’s little point to having Hawley, a Dirk Koetter favorite, around at this point in the season.
T.J. Ward – Does anyone believe the three-time Pro Bowl safety will be here next season? Please. He’s got the pedigree to garner attention on the market, and after Ward’s public moaning this month, Joe can’t imagine Ward would be missed — or be sad to depart.
Chris Baker – Turn on the film and you’ll see a second rate football player with a big contract.

How many more coaches, gm’s and pro bowl players will the glazers go through before addressing the root cause.

But I would replace him with Gerald McCoy and add Lavante David to the list.
Don’t take me as a McCoy basher though…I think he is great. The reason I would trade him is because he has higher trade value than all the others, and he’s about to turn 30. He’s entering his twilight years, and frankly, I don’t see the defensive line getting fixed quick enough to make good use of him.
But get that first and third for him, and we can fix it much faster.
And David? He’s also getting older, and Beckwith can replace him. He’s be at least worth an additional 2nd rounder.
Just trading those two would net us a 1st, 2nd, and a 3rd in the next draft, on top of our other picks. That would fix our defense very quickly, and the cap situation would be prefect for the offensive players we need new contracts for.
I see no bad about it. Keep the important offensive players, and draft the needed defensive players with a mess of picks.

Evan Smith – No one will give anything for him. He’s too old. They know he’ll have to hit the market soon anyway, and even then they might not want him.
Doug Martin – Might get a 3rd rounder from a team that thinks they can get him up and running again, but more likely a 4th rounder.
T.J. Ward – Might get a 5th rounder
Chris Baker – MAYBE a 7th rounder…if that.

Agree with all of these cept Martin. He’s running hard. The O line plays Ok. But a lot of times, the holes are just not there. What other runner we got whose better right now? Better to keep him for the remainder of the season. And let Swaggy..swag elsewheres.

Feels like the OL may be better moving Marpet back to RG, Sweezy to LG, and Hawley to C….and other than Evans, Kwon and #3 I wouldn’t take any other name of the trade table at this stage. Hard to understand how we have gone down so far so fast, and staring at a top 5 draft pick in April.

So many so-called Bucs fans ready to quit on the team, ready to play the blame game – including the Joes – yeah, losing hurts , but quitting won’t solve the problem- did anyone hear Jameis yesterday? Defense played well yesterday- offense has issues on offensive line- whether it’s talent or chemistry time will tell- hang in there Bucs fans- I’d bet on team turning things around – lots of issues early in season- injuries on defense, kicking game, Jameis’ shoulder, maybe coaching , … sounds like excuses, but I’m not ready to give up on season yet.

@Joe, not that I am thrilled with either Hawley or Smith, are we okay Marpet at center? Can’t say our protections/ball snapping have looked great. Wouldn’t hurt to get Sweezy off the line and move Marpet back to guard. Sweezy was whiffing all day yesterday. And I haven’t seen many running lanes for Doug

The issue with doing that would be the effect on the locker room. These players know most of them will outlast any coach because tha fans and owners pull the trigger too quickly.
The message sent should be that they either play well for this coach, or then they hit the road. The way to send that message? Extend his contract by a couple years.
That would let the players know he’ll outlast them so they’d better clean their acts up.

Marpet is doing very well. The bad snaps are disappearing…that’s a result of him being new at the position.
And the only time anyone got past him was when Doug Martin was supposed to block, and instead ran right past the guy that was coming at Winston.

I don’t hate the guy, but he is NOT a difference maker and we can lose without him.
I’m sure Gerald would welcome a change of scenery too.
Trade him to a contender and get a decent draft pick out of it.

I got no problem with trading any or all of those guys but what would we get in return?
Why would another team pay Swaggy? Ward? Doug? If we get them to simply eat the salary that would be amazing but to give us a “decent” player in return.
Maybe we trade them and load up on draft picks for next year…I would support that. If we cobbled some extra 3’s and 4’s we may be able to package them to move up or simply draft a BUNCH of players next year.

I think it is a good idea to get rid of players who are not cutting it. I wonder who is going to scout out these new defensive players? I think there may be a problem with people making these trades. I have had confidence with Licht but something is way wrong with our team. I think it was pretty much well known that Baker was a loafer. Why bring that crap on our team? Ward? We had enough cap to bring Campbell in. Hoping for Campbell and getting Baker what a let down that was. I do not know. If you bring anyone in make sure they only drink bottled water because there is something going on with the tap water.

Bravo AlanBucsfan! I am with you. Also, Joe makes a great distinction…shopping versus moving/trading (don’t want to speak for you Joe, but that’s what my take on what you are saying is). It takes two or more to tango and this isn’t a video game where you can just move players around from team to team. BL: we have not put it all (offense/defense/special teams) together yet this year, but we will. We’ve shown flashes in each area. Not ready for a fire sale during the season just yet. I bet the Bucs leadership isn’t either. Go Bucs!

Seriously Joe? What team at this point in the season would even think of trading for Evan Smith? Or Joe Hawley? Or Chris Baker? Or even TJ Ward? Doug Martin’s a different story, but why trade him? You obviously don’t like him, you’ve made that pretty obvious. But he’s certainly better than Jacquizz Rodgers, and better than Chuck Sims. Probably better than Peyton Barber, but how could we know? Koetter never uses Peyton (personally think he’s got more up-side than either Rodgers or Sims).
Reality is that none of those you mentioned … with the likely exception of Martin … will be a Buc next year. As badly as I wanted Licht to draft a RB these past 2 years, we can’t afford in the next draft (and maybe the one after that) to spend a high draft pick on a RB. Higher priorities? Simple … DE (2), DT (1-2), CB (2), Tackle (1) and probably Safety (1). That’s 2 drafts right there. Bucs flat don’t have enough high draft picks to fix our current roster holes. And that’s assuming that Licht can re-sign our upcoming offensive FAs.

Trade GMC… we’ve had him for this long and it hasn’t made much of a difference as far as how our defensive line has played as a unit. Get a 1 and 3 for him.
I’m open to a DJax trade for a 3 and 5. I think Godwin is being under utilized and could be our #2 WR across from Evens.
I wanted us to trade Brate on draft night when we drafted OJ. Brate’s value will not be any higher than it is now and as far as I know he’s due for a new contract this year and will have some teams willing to pay him handsomely. There is a good chance he walks for the $ anyways. Get a 3rd for him.
Get anything you can for TJ Ward, Baker, Grimes. None of those guys will be back next year, except maybe Baker.
Get Doug Martin to renegotiate his contract or else trade or cut him. I think he can still be a good change of pace back for us, but I believe we need a new bell cow.

If I could get a high 2nd rounder for GMC he would be gone. You can solve some problems with a good 2nd rounder, that is if it is not a kicker.
Dotson would be gone, as well as all running backs. I would bet we could find a better option for backfield on some teams practice squad. Hargrave can go as well.

As usual agree with your observations. Now the question becomes what do we do? Too many are still looking for miracles and trading bad players for good ones…that ain’t happenin.
Is it time to begin a major retool.
If we clear a lot of folks we might be able to get some “OK” draft picks.3rd or 4th rounders unless we go all in and trade GMC.
But if we assemble a bunch of draft picks we could perhaps improve more quickly than folks believe possible. We NEED a DE!!! We probably need a CB and a safety….RB as well but they should be available later.
So do we blow it up and get a bunch of draft picks?

Reading this site you’d think Martin was so worthless and over paid it was so obvious he was done. So with that money modest, who would give us more than a 7th round pick for him?
Speaking of the Martin narrative, since our offensive line has been so awesome at making running lanes, why would you want to trade away the depth and experience? I mean, since they’re such road graders, blasting open massive holes for Martin to run through, why would we give up such a strength?
If you really want to trade anyone, it’s gotta be TJ Ward, Chris Baker, or GMC. Ward has obviously lost a step and has an attitude problem. Baker is a lazy lard that doesn’t practice, complains about hitting drills, and spends more time heckling his teammates than studying a playbook.
As for GMC, no doubt he’s talented and gifted, and the best player on our defensive line, but he hasn’t played up to his contract. He has no edge to him and has no problem yucking it up with opposing players after divisional losses. Tampa Bay has been a country club for him, with no accountability or expectations of him. Unload his massive contract, draft young guys with hunger in their eyes and a bite in their bark, and without a doll collection in their batcave

@StPete … “So do we blow it up and get a bunch of draft picks?” Kept asking myself that very same question StPete, then came to the conclusion that we’ve already blown it up … in 2014 when Lovie came on-board. Got rid of a number of very serviceable players & added nada IMO. Thus we had to spend quite a few draft picks & add some FAs since then on their replacements … draft picks & FAs who could’ve helped us NOW as DE, DT, CB, S, etc. Blowing it up a second time in 3 years won’t help at this point. That ship already sank once.
Reality to me is that draft picks in Rnds 1-2 should help us fairly quickly, as either starters or rotational players. Picks in Rnds 3-4 are normally more developmental players who can help in say 1-3 yrs … maybe. Any picks in Rnds 5-7 are crap shoots at best (most don’t ever see 4-5 yrs in the NFL). No doubt in my mind that no team is gonna trade a Rnd 1-2 pick to the Bucs right now for the vast majority of players on our roster (Jameis & ME13 & OJ are probably the only 3 exceptions I can think of right now).
Bottom line is simple to me. First, identify our ‘core players’. You know, guys who we want to build this team around … sadly I can only think of 15 or so who’d fall into that category (and that’s being generous). Second, identify ‘keepers’ … players who we’ll probably end up keeping for say 3-5 years, simply because we can’t rebuild an entire team all at once. I can think of maybe another 15 (?) who’d fall into that category. That’d mean around 23-25 players would fall into the third category: ‘Expendable’ (for lack of a better word?). Prioritize those then start replacing them with FAs & draft picks, recognizing that it’ll probably take at least 2 and more likely 3 years to replace them all.
Then start the process all over again, because some of those earlier ‘core players’ & ‘keepers’ will need to be replaced by then. Seems like the Bucs just stay in deep doo-doo doesn’t it?

There is only 1 person on this list that is going to get any attention and that is Doug Martin. And that’s cuz he’s still gashing for 12, 14, 17 yard plays.
Our head coach sucks for whatever reason. Maybe they need to offload the play calling duty to a new OC like they did in where was it this past couple weeks? It worked for that team. Jameis can be salvaged with a good OC and some help with some new blood in the OL. But, the dude makes to many inaccurate passes. He’s shown that he’s reduced the bone headed throws, they are there but not as much as earlier in the season.
But, we need to get massive help on the defensive side. They can’t stop anyone. Burnhim Hargreaves is a sucka. He keeps wagging his finger on plays where the opposing QB throws a ball out of bounds or over his WR’s head and he thinks he had something to do with it. Grimes is gone next year. Our entire DL except for McCoy sucks. Our safeties are put on an island. What I thought was a strength at the end of last year is our biggest weakness. What happened? Every defensive player not named McCoy or in the LB unit have grossly regressed. It’s a shame. Putting that much pressure on the offense, which is an average offense at best, is going to create all these problems we’re seeing. We’re getting taken out of the game plan within the first quarter or max second quarter.

Justin Evans may actually be a solid player moving forward. Making some plays for being injured all preseason.
He got beat on jump ball for td but you could tell he kinda slipped when he went to get ball from Benjamin

I have a world of respect for Tomlin…not sure I would give up all those picks…but.
But Tomlin as good as he is coaches a GREAT franchise. The Rooneys are simply smarter, better owners than the Glazers. Now if we could trade the Glazers for the Rooneys….LMAO

I’ve been banging the drum that our “complementary” players are the problem not our stars. I agree with your take about our “good” players. But I’m watching the Lightning and wondering who is the Bucs Anton Stralman….Dan Girardi….the Bucs no names like Swaggy are horrible!
Sadly sometimes a sports franchise has to spend several years paying for mistakes made in a short period.

Joe, trade these guys for players who could help this year beat the Jets, Dolphins and perhaps an upset or two at home to go 5-11 or 6-10? Id rather see the Bucs get some day 3 picks next year that could be packaged in minor trades for the Bucs to move up a few slots to grab a player who they think might vanish off of the board in rounds 2,3 and 4 or actually move up into the next round as the Bucs are probably going to be picking behind SF, Cleveland, the Giants and maybe the Colts; a top 5 selection in each round….

At this point I’d be fine with a 3rd round pick for GMC. Oh and if he makes the Pro Bowl again this year, that voting system is rigged like a North Korean election.

I actually hate that Doug is on this list. Bucs don’t draft well beyond round 2 (excluding a small few) and we don’t have another quality running back (even though they say they’re a dime a dozen). We have too many needs to worry about another RB

We should honestly trade our best players away so they won’t be wasted by the Yucs. I’d take a bag of Burgers for each one. Then fold this f—ing team. End the pain Tampa fans go through. Other teams can do no wrong. The Yucs can do nothing right. The players not traded away get work at Publix and Walmart.

I’m fine with trading some of these guys, bigger question, why not look to be buyers in some of the fire sales. Jay Ajayia just got traded for a 4th, he would have been an upgrade and only 24. Maybe some underperforming teams would be willing to sell a quality DE or corner for a reasonable price. I get that players won’t be plug and play, but this season isn’t going anywhere, might as well start trying to fill holes for next year.

If it weren’t for the Glazers, this team woulda been outta here a long time ago. Nobody had any interest in keeping the team in Tampa with the franchise history here, small market, the local community not interested in getting a new stadium built, etc. They may not be the Rooney’s of the world but they’re not the problem. Without them, there would have never been a Chucky or a Super Bowl. They had balls of steel to pull that trade.
And I was facetiously saying we should trade all those picks and cash for Tomlin in reference to the biggest move this franchise has ever made to get it out of mediocrity. Even if it was short lived.
Tomlin is a great coach and I’m sure the Bucs brass don’t meddle in the day to day. So he would do well. But, the Steelers aren’t going to let him go I’m sure. The Glazers just come in when they feel the team is wading in stagnant water. They probably could do a better job with hiring and firing coaches though. But, everybody not named the Steelers or Patriots goes through these similar problems.
