Learning Too Slow For Jameis
October 29th, 2017Joe’s not sure what’s a greater horror, the second-quarter senseless giveaway by America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, or the fact Jameis isn’t learning quickly enough from all the protect-the-ball coaching drilled into his head.
At some point, this stuff has to stop.
The Bucs were driving and at the Panthers’ 37 yard line with about 5:50 remaining in the first half. Jameis scrambled and while in the grasp of Julius Peppers at the 40, Jameis attempted a shovel pass to Doug Martin for what would have been a short gain.
What ensued was Jameis fumbling as he stopped protecting the ball and tried to be a hero at the wrong time.
Yeah, Joe is picking on Jameis here, but these high school mistakes must stop. The excuse that Jameis is too wired to make plays for his team and can never let a play die has to be buried, especially on a senseless play like this when your team is struggling to score points.
Enough already.
Learn how to eat a sack, Jameis, and use your talents on the next play. That foolish turnover likely cost the Bucs a shot at three points, or more.
For those wondering, no, Joe isn’t pinning the arm-hit interception in the fourth quarter on Jameis, but the late pick to Luke Kuechly was a very predictable force job to Cameron Brate.
Bad Jameis today.
October 29th, 2017 at 4:04 pm
Jameis is what Jameis does….
October 29th, 2017 at 4:05 pm
Doesn’t currently look anything like a franchise QB
October 29th, 2017 at 4:06 pm
Good thing there’s always next year!
October 29th, 2017 at 4:06 pm
We can’t get it right. Offense plays good defense plays bad. Defense plays good offense plays bad
October 29th, 2017 at 4:07 pm
I said we should have rested Jameis for a couple of games. Looks like he was grimacing with that shoulder towards the end. Koetter won’t be satisfied until Jameis is out for the year..Which he will be shortly. Its just a matter of time.
Ok..so what for it..Next week is a Must Win game for our Bucs. What a laugher.
October 29th, 2017 at 4:07 pm
Of course we draft the guy, that can’t run! lol
October 29th, 2017 at 4:08 pm
Mr. Magoo just led his team to the gutter.
October 29th, 2017 at 4:09 pm
I am not sure West Central Florida’s Quarterback one time pro-bowler due to injury Jameis Winston is progressing to slowly. I think he has just hit his peak. What we see is all we are ever going to get. It’s the best option we have, but he isn’t championship material.

He needs an excuse now! so probably!
October 29th, 2017 at 4:09 pm
He is who he is. I think he’ll be a good QB for us for a long time. I’m not sure he’ll ever be elite. It’s unfortunate because he has the talent to be beat in league. I hope I’m wrong but the progress from day 1 isn’t very encouraging.
October 29th, 2017 at 4:10 pm
The Winston spastic quarterback play has warn out it’s welcome. Very concerned this is a pattern.
October 29th, 2017 at 4:10 pm
MF lost the game today. No excuses.
October 29th, 2017 at 4:10 pm
Fix the O-line and it might look better!!!!!
October 29th, 2017 at 4:11 pm
He played bad against a good D. But let’s face facts, he got 0 help from his play caller, and 0 help from his O-line.
Tank for Saquon Barkley, draft Dotson’s replacement, get some damn D-Line talent, and draft 2 corners.
October 29th, 2017 at 4:11 pm
Eric Dungey, QB Syracuse, maybe a 2nd rounder…..still under the radar a little
October 29th, 2017 at 4:11 pm
Why do we always draft 1st round qbs that seem to lack it between the ears?
October 29th, 2017 at 4:13 pm
You know why koetter keeps calling deep passing plays because they are open, and yet Jameis still can’t hit the throw. I’m a Jameis fan but the kid just can’t throw deep and continues to make to many stupid mistakes. I don’t want to hear about how the Bucs offense is number one in passing, they suck and will suck until Jameis cuts down on mistakes and learns how to hit a pass more than 30 yards. It’s clear that Hargreaves is way better when playing up on the line of scrimmage, showing mike smith was not taking advantage of his players strengths. Still can’t breath on a qb, yet still no creative blitzes with lvd. When they do blitz they are so delayed that the qb has time to find his hot read. I’m tired of hearing how Martin sucks, when they guy is getting tackled four yards behind the line of scrimmage he can make some people miss and gain 4 yards a carry. Granted he is not as quick as he use to be, but he is still a good back. The oline with the exception of marpet and Dotson is just serviceable, middle of the pack oline nothing special.
October 29th, 2017 at 4:13 pm
Ok to be fair he is injured… just pissed.. only ever seems to play well in losing efforts and never when the rest of the team is clicking
October 29th, 2017 at 4:13 pm
We need a big fast RB, and Tons of Pass rush! We can’t keep drafting the same positions over and over!
October 29th, 2017 at 4:14 pm
Oh yeah we need a GM too!
October 29th, 2017 at 4:14 pm
No 4th quarter heroics for Winston today. Time for surgery since RG4 is about to come back. Who cares about consecutive starts or another 4000 yard season? I bet Fitzy could win a few games for us. The season is over anyway. The YUCS are back!
October 29th, 2017 at 4:14 pm
He’s who he has always been….starts slow, inaccurate and turnover prone. He’s not capable of carrying the team….dude can’t hit Evans or Jackson wide open down the sidelines…week after week after week.
We’ll be on our 3rd coach before his rookie contract is up….
October 29th, 2017 at 4:14 pm
Brett Favre NEVER learned to avoid “high-school level mistakes” and that drive and confidence to make every play is what made him great.
I’m not saying Jameis made a smart or a good play … but I don’t care either … his drive and determination and never say die attitude is what makes him great

Even after today’s garbage, Jameis still has a better TD to INT ratio than the last two NFL MVPs … relax and take the LONG-TERM VIEW … a tank job wouldn’t be a bad idea as this team needs a TON OF HELP on the defensive side of the ball AND a new RB!
October 29th, 2017 at 4:19 pm
I said it before and I’ll say it again…. It seems like he’s regressing…. He looks nervous and lacking confidence….I think him and others have lost confidence in what their doing….GO BUCS!!!
October 29th, 2017 at 4:19 pm
@NFL
This needs to be a tank and reload kind of year. Like what the Cowboys did 2 years ago to come away with Zeke Elliot.
October 29th, 2017 at 4:20 pm
I’m done. I know no one cares, but I’ve been a fan from day one. 9 years old at game 1 in 1976. As a 50 year old man, I refuse to waste whatever life I have left watching this crap every Sunday! I have lowered myself on this site repeatedly begging Bucs fans to support this team. And now, what I thought was our salvation has become someone that can’t hit wide open DJax and Evans over and over again. Despite his bad game, if he hits Evans wide open for a TD late, we still have hope with over 3 minutes left. JABOO, screw you!! If you can’t make the easy plays, sit your ass down and let someone else play like an average QB. That’d be an upgrade. Rest on your laurels. Hopefully you’ll heal on them. GO BUCS! But you’ll be going without me from now on.
October 29th, 2017 at 4:21 pm
Winton, will never come close to Brett Favre!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
October 29th, 2017 at 4:21 pm
Hey joe still think Winston is “americas quarterback”?? Go get your head checked. Garbage quarterback garbage team.
October 29th, 2017 at 4:21 pm
********************
BLAKE … I think everyone would LOVE to get Saquon … and it’s not that unrealistic if we get the 4th pick as I expect the first 3 picks to all be QBs: Darnold, Rosen, Allen
Right now, I’m thinking:
Browns: Darnold
49ers: Rosen
Jets (trade up if need be): Allen
4th: Saquon … will we have #4 or will the Giants, Bengals, Colts, Raiders, etc get it? There are A LOT OF BAD TEAMS …

October 29th, 2017 at 4:21 pm

Koetter should’ve never started Winston today. His game play proved it.
October 29th, 2017 at 4:24 pm
@nut
Screw the stats…. The turn overs and inaccuracy are killing us…. It ain’t all his fault but don’t give me stats….I was at the game…I saw the wrs open… No doubt penalties and drops hurts but Winston has taken a step back….GO BUCS!!!
October 29th, 2017 at 4:26 pm
Winston will never lead this team to a playoff victory. He is the second coming of Andy Dalton- decent but never good enough to get it done when it counts. This isn’t college anymore.

Winston has all the intangibles as a great QB but until he improves his accuracy he should be benched
October 29th, 2017 at 4:31 pm
I’ll start being willing to accept these risk/reward type of situations, where we’re being told that it’s just because he’s too much of a gamer, when it’s done consistently along with 3-4 touchdowns and 350+ yards. When the numbers actually show that he’s out there balling out of control and one just gets away from him. As it stands, they’re looking lifeless and putrid and then he’s doing dumb things on top of it.
October 29th, 2017 at 4:32 pm
Do you think Mr. Magoo will say he needs to be better in the press conference?
October 29th, 2017 at 4:32 pm
813BucBoi … no, JW has NOT taken a step back … that’s an idiotic overreaction based on the most recent game … he came in on pace for 4,807 yards, 30 TDs & 12 picks and had a 95.5 rating … that is called AWESOME and PROGRESSION … he had a bad game today, is playing with a jacked shoulder, etc … it happens … don’t be an idiot.
October 29th, 2017 at 4:34 pm
His accuracy, the injury, plus the wind and no running game is a really bad combo. It’s a lot of things. I think Dirk is regressing too!

Yes, Favre was a great QB and exciting to watch. How many Super Bowls did he win?
On the other hand you have Montana and Brady. Not gunslinger, but very smart, patient QBs. How many Super Bowls have they won?

There is the good Jameis and the bad Jameis.People are too willing to blame Koetter for the bad Jameis.Yes there were some drive stalling penalties, and sometimes I wish Koetter would stop calling more than one running play in a row.
But anybody that doesn’t see that Jameis is stalling this offense with poorly thrown passes and inexcusable mistakes is missing something. Would love for Jameis to overcome this,
but let him rest the shoulder and come back with a fresh start. Hump should have been in concussion protocall after that hit.
Koetter has to get Howard and Godwin in the offense, in spite of Jameis favoring
Hump.Give Godwin a chance on the deep pass that bounces off Hump’s shoulder pads.

BUCCODAV … “rings” are an organizational accomplishment, not an individual player accomplishment.
Perhaps the three greatest pure throwers of the football that have ever walked the earth: Marino, Fouts and Moon COMBINED TO WIN *ZERO* RINGS in their 50+ years of NFL football … while the immortal Trent Dilfer, Brad Johnson and Jeff Hostettler all won a ring …
RINGS mean NOTHING in regards to individual players … nothing … they are organizational accomplishments.

Yes, blame the fans for being ahead of the curve. Mr. Magoo is making Freeman look good as far as being a leader. America’s Disappointment is making a name for himself in the “Me” stats, though.
October 29th, 2017 at 4:39 pm
Of course he grabs his shoulder when something goes wrong. If he would have hit Mike Evans for the td he would have ran down there and did the dunk celebration with his cough cough bad shoulder. if we are this angry think of what the players are going to start doing. We all know it’s coaching and jameis. So they are going to turn like rabid dogs. And the coaches will let them. If the patriots lose a couple you don’t see the players crying about playing time and such. Because they know they will be benched next week. Not called into the coaches office to voice there concerns. And be told we will get you more playing time and make you your little feelings feel better next week. How about come out like the hoody would do and say if you want more playing time you have to be better when you get an opportunity. This is a performance based league and we are always at the bottom. At least the announcers acknowledged that Gerald gave them a reason to say his name once today fro the first time in the last three. But we know he is game planned against and is the best player at his position in the league. I wonder how watt gets so many sacks when he is double teamed every game and game planned against. Probably because he is actually good and has passion and a motor that. Ever stops. We suck fans are pissed as we deserve to be do joe please no puff pieces on jameis and Gerald this week. Call them out
October 29th, 2017 at 4:42 pm
How about wins, Nut. Do they matter to you? The reason Green Bay put up with Favre is because more often than not he had winning seasons.

October 29th, 2017 at 4:44 pm
McCown was 22/28 290ish yards today, leading a competitive team with more wins; a team we will not defeat without dramatic improvements.
I won’t call him McClown anymore; neither should any Bucs fan.
Please stop the Farve comparison. Farve and average QB’s, could hit open receivers consistently.
October 29th, 2017 at 4:44 pm
JW3 only has 3 opening drive TD’s & 8 first quarter TD passes in 39 games now. Can’t wait until we pay him 20+ million per year and can’t afford anyone on defense because him and ME13 cost too much. We will NEVER be good again!
October 29th, 2017 at 4:44 pm
Nut, another thing those QBs had in common… they were all “gunslingers”. Coincidence?
October 29th, 2017 at 4:50 pm
******************
BUCCODAV,
As a fan of course you want to see “wins” but just like rings, wins are an organizational accomplishment.
Again, some of the greatest QBs who ever lived never won a single ring while garbage QBs have won many …
The same can be said for players at every position … Barry Sanders won just ONE playoff game in his entire career …
The Brady Patriots and Montana 49ers were the best run organizations in the NFL and those organizations were dominant …
Idiotic fans treat player evaluations in football as if this were the sport of boxing or tennis rather than the ultimate TEAM sport and it’s so silly.
In reality there is no difference between evaluating a college QB and a pro QB … it doesn’t matter if a college QBs W/L record is infinitely worse than 100 other college QBs … if he’s more talented he will get drafted higher … it’s the same in the NFL … fans want to talk W/L records but I guarantee you GMs don’t care … if there are two free agent QBs to sign and they have to pick, they are not looking at W/L record, they are looking at talent.

Just watched Deshawn Watson hit Will Fuller for a long TD. Do you fans realize that Jameis has yet to hit DJax for a long TD despite numerous, NUMEROUS, chances?!?!? Glad you’re the first one in the building Jameis!! I would hate to think what you’d be without doing that!! THREE POINTS AT HOME IN A MUST WIN GAME!!! Enough said. Keep on sucking Succaneers!!!
October 29th, 2017 at 4:51 pm
BUCCODAV … Elway and Roethlisberger are also “gunslingers” and they have combined for four rings and eight conference titles … it’s not about “mentality” it’s about the organization as a whole when you’re talking rings and wins
October 29th, 2017 at 4:52 pm

October 29th, 2017 at 5:07 pm
It takes a lot more than just being able to throw the ball to be a good NFL quarterback.
October 29th, 2017 at 5:08 pm
Lol I don’t understand how most of yall complaining the way yall are wtf? Winston has put up the number 1 passing offense in the league behind a very dismal rushing attack and not to mention always playing from behind
the Panthers d is one of the best, insane winds all day, pressure in his face non stop, jacked shoulder plus he’s still only 23 or so 1 bad game and which considering all the factors that may have had a major impact everyone getting down on the kid like he hasn’t giving us the best offense the bucs have ever had by far the way I see it if we had any kind of defense we would be sitting at 5-2 or better yet 6-1 because of our qb everyone bashing…pathetic
October 29th, 2017 at 5:09 pm
Who is the moron that posted to fix the Oline? Dude if you are going to call deep drop backs all day long against a team built for pass rush you better have a line built for pass pro and you better still have a your RB ready to chip all day.
They didn’t need film study to beat our Oline today. We let them get free practice on us the entire first half.
October 29th, 2017 at 5:11 pm
And JABOO has fumbled 8 times in 7 games!! Really? You people defend him!! WTF?
October 29th, 2017 at 5:12 pm
For all of you football geniuses, and this goes for Joe, it’s amazing what an incredibly short (or nonexistent?) memory you have.
Jameis was playing hurt and in pain all day!
All damm day! This is NOT the same QB we’ve seen for most of the season. He couldn’t complete passes he normally makes easily.
How are you people so dumb not to see that? Ditto for Koetter, who is proving what a terrible coach he is with each passing week
October 29th, 2017 at 5:13 pm

GMC to the Patriots for Malcolm Butler and a 3rd … or without Butler for a 2nd and 4th

One more thing … simply examine the career of pretty much every SB winning QB and you will also see that individual excellence has almost nothing to do with winning a ring and that rings are entirely organizational accomplishments.
For example … look at Brady … he won more rings (3) when he was a young game-manager than he has after he became a superstar (2) … same with Elway … he won his (2) rings AFTER he was an old man and didn’t win any when he was a superstar.
Jameis is easily good enough to win a ring on a dominant team right now … in fact just about every starting level QB in the entire NFL is good enough to win a ring on a dominant team right now with the exception of guys like Kizer, Hoyer, Siemian, Cutler, Bortles, Flacco (who won one when he wasn’t as terrible as he is now) and Trubisky. Even guys like Andy Dalton, Carson Palmer and the current version of Eli Manning could win a ring on a great team right now … but very, very few QBS are on dominant TEAMS right now and very few QBs ever get the chance to even play one single season on a dominant TEAM … which is why all-time greats routinely retire with ZERO rings.
Don’t let lazy media narrartives turn you into idiots.
*************************
October 29th, 2017 at 5:26 pm
He probably still has good trade value. We could start Ryan Griffin or Fitz and set ourselves up with some extra picks to use on DEs and CB if we traded Jameis now. I’m about ready to give up on him. If we have so many weapons how can we only score 8 points? QB. Inconsistent QB. Will he ever be consistent? Doubtful. Unload him, tank the season, and load up on draft picks.
October 29th, 2017 at 5:26 pm
813bucboi … so what? Marino, Fouts and Moon combined to win ZERO rings in 50+ years of football … WINS are organizational accomplishments … they mean next to nothing when evaluating INDIVIDUAL players … grow up.
October 29th, 2017 at 5:36 pm
bucs_365 .. it’s loons like you that make me want JW to get traded and win a ring elsewhere (like Shaq did to dumb Orlando fans) … and yes, the Bucs could get a ton in return for him
October 29th, 2017 at 5:42 pm
Go ahead and trade JW to Denver for Paxton Lynch and a #1, #2 and #3 and watch the Broncos win 3 rings in the 5 years … and watch the Bucs go 20-60 …
October 29th, 2017 at 5:45 pm

The “arm hit” INT can be put on Winston. If his release was just a hair quicker the ball would have been out. I’ll admit that I thought his slower release would hinder him on a lot more throws than it has, but it did on that play.
October 29th, 2017 at 6:40 pm

The most impactful fourth-down mistake in the early games came from the Buccaneers, who punted on fourth-and-2 from the Panthers’ 42-yard line in the second quarter. That decision cost the Bucs 3.1% in win probability.

October 29th, 2017 at 6:53 pm
High school mistakes aren’t going to stop with Jameis he’s had enough time to grow and it ain’t happening. Sit him once Griffin is healthy and see what we have on the bench. Worst case we end up with a high draft pick either way.
October 29th, 2017 at 7:04 pm
The problems are not with Winston, yeah he had a bad game but the stink that is a 2-5 Buc team that will probably tank its way to 4-12 and a 5th overall pick in the draft is the result of poor coaching and a bit of lack of depth due to poor drafting over the past decade. The organization need a complete overhaul and a lot of people are going to complain that you can’t fire a coach every 2 years, well if you do not act we will simply be looking at more of this garbage next year. Last year was a season where everything went right for the Bucs for 5 weeks where they won the garbage games where the team did not perform very well but still won (at San Diego, Saints at home) and had a couple of other decent win vs Seattle and KC. Parts of last season looked putrid too: losing to Oakland, losing at New Orleans, Ariozna, the Rams, the Bronco game , etc etc…. Last season the Bucs blasted a couple of bad teams like SF and Chicago but looking at Koetter’s work as a whole and is it much better than what Rah did in 2010-2011? Just being a better coach than Lovie should not guarantee job security….
October 29th, 2017 at 7:11 pm
ahahaha problems are not with Winston. His play is in fact a problem. One of many this team has going for it.
October 29th, 2017 at 7:18 pm
Again, so many idiots on this site. Jameis is going to be a very good, if not great QB in this league. If you can’t see it, that’s on you. He’s 23 and is among the league leaders in most statistical categories. You can say “but where are W’s” all day long but remember he was picked #1 for a reason – we sucked so bad we got to pick 1st.
We saw improvement last year and we were all excited. Truth is, the defense is a fraud. Simple as that. By the way, as I type this I’m watching two very good QB’s on the Red Zone, Russell Wilson and Kirk Cousins, throw costly bad interceptions with the game on the line. Oh, and I’ve seen DeShawn Watson throw 2 bad interceptions today.

@Jaboowins- only reason JW3 is a league leader in anything other than turnovers and stupid decisions is because we are constantly playing from behind and he gets to rack up yardage and scores in garbage time. I agree with you in the defense, it’s a hot mess and needs more help than it will get this season.

^ Jameis is already a top 10 QB according to PFF and anyone with a brain … but he’s not #1 and may not be #1 for years, if ever … so what … he and other up-and-down young QBs like Carr, Watson and Wentz are franchise QBs that should be with their teams for the next 10-15 years … each of those fanbases should support their QB and hope their front office surrounds them with enough quality players and coaches to make the playoffs consistently …

AlaskaBuc, do you watch the NFL? All these QBs have to play catch up almost every week because the difference between these teams is so small. Fact is, he has no defense and very little of a running game. So, he has to throw it a lot and the other team knows it. This puts a lot of pressure on what is still a young player. He has is getting better each year. Again, if you can’t see it, that’s on you.
Their defense is extremely bad and you can’t win consistently in this league if you can’t stop people.

I can live with the bone head if he can hit open receivers on 3rd down. In seven games with 15 QBs playing, Winston has been better than 2 of them (and I’m assuming he outplayed Glennon b/c I did not see that game). He’s just not very good right now.
Notice how other teams incompletes are usually a pass defended or a throw away. Ours are guys who are either wide open or at least NFL open all the time. If Winston can’t fix that (and as others have said, accuracy is usually something you have or don’t), he will wind up as a journeyman QB or just Freeman himself out of the league.
You can pull up stats on yardage or his age and slob his knob all day, but you win in this league by moving the sticks. You can’t move the sticks if you miss open recievers on a regular basis.

JAMEIS DOESN’T JUST PLAY LIKE BRETT FAVRE, HE PLAYS THROUGH PAIN LIKE BRETT FAVRE TOO!
You nutjobs live week-2-week and make yourselves look like idiots.
No one cares that Favre had some of the worst single games in NFL history, filled with insane throws, crazy fumbles, tons of picks, wild inaccuracy, etc., etc., etc … what people remember is that Favre loved football, loved his teammates, would play through anything, and when he was “on”, was absolutely dominant … all the same things can be said about JW through his first 2.5 years in the league and JW is building a great legacy … and you idiots are missing enjoying it … I feel bad for all of you.

You said that he was getting sacked by Julius Peppers. That was ALL DAY JOE!!! Nothing ever changed. That’s definitely not Jameis’ fault when nothing gets changed offensively. Koetter has been outschemed this whole year and to say otherwise is kidding yourself.

Hey NFLNUT.
So it what Mr. Winston is not doing that Mr. Farve did is WIN. By being the Gunslinger game manager, clutch player when needed. The thing Mr. Winston lacks that Mr. Farve did not lack is accuracy. Throwing 20-35 yards down field and hitting his guy in stride in their hands. Again you will say it is this and it is that, but without accuracy you can not be a successful QB in the NFL(NotForLong).
It is a team sport and yes lots of things go into a successful offensive play. But in the end if your QB misses open receivers again and again and again and again there will not be many Wins to put you in any position to play in the postseason. Because you never score enough points during the game to be Victorious. Great to have a QB with 4000-5000 yards in a season, but that does not mean spit, if you have a losing record. We all have heard how powerful an arm Mr. Winston has, we see him overthrow a few passes, it is the underthrown passes that tell me just how powerful his arm really is. Or not. And having the big arm means NOTHING if you can not use it to throw to your wide open receivers. When you miss the easy wide open receiver pass multiple times who is that plays results on? The coaches, the GM, the play calling? Or the guy who is paid well to pull the trigger. And yet again and again misses another WIDE OPEN receiver. Yes it is not all on Mr. Winston, but being “America’s QB, The Messiah, the Franchise QB” COMES WITH expectations! And when those expectations fail to produce winning more games than you lose in a season, changes are forced upon teams. I understand that Mr. Winston is just 23, and he might grow much more in his next few seasons. But there are many more jobs on the line, than just being the starting QB. With every over or under thrown pass, every pass interception, fumble during season play causing other folks to be worried about their own jobs being on the line. If Mr Winston is injured sit him down. Until he is not injured. Play Mr. Fitzpatrick or Mr Griffin when he is back. NFL NUT we do agree that Wins is what we are playing for Right? Not stats, pro bowls, MVP status, it is ONLY about having more Wins than Losses at the end of the season, so you have an opportunity to play in the postseason. And if Mr. Winston can not produce that result then it is time to move along. That sux. Winning isn’t everything it is the only thing that matters.
Go! Bucs!
