Grimes Loss Vs. Panthers Looms

October 26th, 2017

Injured

Joe avoided writing about this yesterday because the subject was too traumatic.

But it’s real and Joe can’t play pretend or games of hope any longer.

Brent Grimes is injured. It’s a shoulder. He hasn’t practiced this week — Wednesday and Thursday.

We all saw what horror happened in the Bucs’ secondary when Grimes missed the Minnesota game in September with a shoulder issue. During that week, he was at least “limited” in practice.

Veteran cornerback Robert McClain, the new starting outside corner opposite Grimes, remains in the NFL concussion protocol and hasn’t practiced this week, either.

The thought of Vernon Hargreaves, Ryan Smith and Javien Elliott as the Bucs’ top-three cornerbacks on Sunday has Joe sprinting now to happy hour at Abe’s Place.

Let’s be honest Joe, you don’t need bad news as an excuse to go to happy hour at Abe’s.

  2. Hodad Says:

I see the horror when he does play Joe. Amazing how these losses keep plying up when we have such a winning head coach.

  3. ChanEpic Says:

    I. Believe. That. We. Will. WIN!
    GO BUCS!

  4. LakeLand Says:

Jason Licht will probably find Myron Lewis and sign him to a multi year contract.

  5. Waterboy Says:

This time it won’t be Case Keenum coming to town.

  6. PRBucFan Says:

Whatevs ahaha it is what it is, and ish aint pretty in TB to begin with.

My expectations for this season have been lowered to NADA.

  7. Nick2 Says:

Make mine a double Jim Beam and coke Joe slice of lime. Its going to be a long Sunday. Our “how could we possibly get worse” defense just got well…… worse!!!!!!!!!

  8. Tackleblockwin Says:

Most of our players should be fine with only one shoulder…it’s not like they tackle anybody.

  9. Pistol Pete Says:

This is going to be brutal…..half full Den….angry Cam…10ft tall WR’s against VH3, and Conte’.
    God help us all.

  10. DallasBuc Says:

Good thing is my trusted insider source has assured me for months now that we are deep at cornerback so I for one am not worried. Also Donovan Smith is a good football player and Doug Martin is NOT a good football player. Just follow the Licht guys!

  11. Alaskan abdominal snowman Says:

Wow talk about a worst case scenario. These guys can’t even cover their mouths when they cough. Read the Saints might release Sterling Moore. Offer them a 7th and get him NOW. At least he can cover every once in a while.

  12. westernbuc Says:

He hasn’t done anything this year, and Miko’s Snapchat proved he’s done with the Bucs. At least our young guys can get some game reps

  13. Dewey Selmon Says:

westernbuc nailed it. If we were 4-2 he would be available.

  14. PRBucFan Says:

Hasn’t done anything lol ok, only best CB on our team and one of the best in the NFL but alright, hate away.

  15. LifeOfABucFan Says:

I never have had a drop of alcohol in my life..Nearly 5 decades and I might start drinking now..

Should I start with straight Jack Daniels?? Or will it not be strong enough..

    Oh…My…God….

  16. LakeLand Says:

Well the Good News is that Robert McClain might be out also. And the other bad news is that Luke Kuechly will play.

  17. ClodHopper Says:

Wow. DBs gonna need reinforcement. Bring in the calvery. Joe, you might get your wish after all and they run a two man rush!!

  18. Roy T. Buford Says:

Can you get much worse than last week, no matter who is on the field? Lousy players with an improved effort is probably better than starters who can play but who didn’t care. It’s a wash.

  19. Kobe Faker Says:

    “Rhonde Barber>Simeon Rice”

    Kobe Faker

  20. GhostofSchiano Says:

How many months until the 2018 draft?

  21. Bayers Says:

I believe in the bucs. I been listening and reading about fans on this site and I have to say do y’all ever stop to think and wonder that we as fans could be one of the bucs reasons of downfall. Listen we as fans are like parents and the bucs are like kids no matter what we have to love them and praise them. Stop with all negativity even if it hurts just love and let’s just see what happens let’s just see. I love my bucs and no matter what I give them a fighting chance to win every week every week no matter what. Because we wouldn’t wish for our kids to fail we would only want the best for them. Go bucs let’s get back into the race!!

  22. Pickgrin Says:

Time for the youngsters to step up!

  23. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Speaking for Pablo

“Pablo suggests Jose Cuervo, Pablo’s adult beverage, but Pablo must warn you, it is partially responsible for Pablo’s many, many, many Children’s. Pablo loves his Bucs and LifeOfABucFan…..nearly 50 or not.”

  24. feelthepewterpower Says:

A lot of older vets don’t practice during the week. I would have thought they would have added another CB by now if it’s serious. The telltale will likely be tomorrow’s practice. If he practices, even if limited, Grimey will play. Not going to sweat it until that’s the case, Joe.

  25. Maze Says:

The good news is Cam is d bag and may be trying to force his way outta Carolina

  26. Broodlaw Says:

On the injury report is one thing, though granted when he’s out there on Sunday he’s tripping over himself half the time; he’s lost a step and age is hitting him hard this year. Secondary is definitely a liability for this team, it was going into the offseason and it still is today. Let’s just hope that the next man up mentality resounds with these younger players and they get a second wind like last year.

  27. GhostofSchiano Says:

I hope it is not serious but would like to see steps taken to ensure Mike Smith has all the tools he needs to get the job done. There are some options available to Licht. As well as 18.4 million dollars of Glazer loot still under the cap.

A little insurance is better than no insurance.

  28. GhostofSchiano Says:

I STAND CORRECTED. My apologies Mr. licht.

    https://www.cbssports.com/fantasy/football/news/buccaneers-deji-olatoye-reaches-deal-with-tampa-bay/

Although I could not help notice he is a former Atlanta Falcon, hhhmmmmmmm

  29. Buccaneer scotty Says:

Who cares it’s to nice outside to sit and watch a whole team of losers I’m going fishing peace out!

  30. StPeteBucsFan Says:

Wow! From bad to worse eh?

Still love the Bucs but it’s time to check the line and perhaps lay down some bucks….but as bad as Cam and the Panthers are playing I’m not sure who wins on Sunday.

A general observation. Put aside the NBA because basketball is a 5 man sport and ONE LeBron can turn a team around…Baseball…Hockey and Football have so many more moving parts and pieces that it gets pretty complex.

So I think we are not as in bad of shape as we might fear….for 2017…yep…but overall I remain optimistic going forward if we don’t all panic and dump everything.

Look at the Lightning. Virtually all successful teams need the “stars”. But they all need lot more. And as great as our stars are…and we are loaded from Goalie to Forward and now Defense…there are worker bees that really make the difference. Guys like Girardi the new FA defenseman. Dude doesn’t skate fast…has no shot…but he’s a real grinder who has thrown his body in front of more hard shots than any other player in the entire league. He has made a huge difference in front of our goalie…but he clearly is not one of our top three talents back there…but he his a very effective player.

I don’t know what % of the “grinders” are required for any football or hockey team but I do know they are critical. I LOVE Shelton Quarles but he played waaaay above his skill set. He was a great grinder for us. There have been others “no names” who have helped.

I think that’s part of the problem with Bucs. Our star players are not the problem although plenty want to blame #3. Just like GMC…this is NOT on him…it’s on the team…and so I guess that’s on Licht and DK. So while we’ve been justifiably impressed with Licht’s drafting of stars…where he seems to be coming up short is finding the right “worker bees” to mesh with those stars.

Players like Swaggy and Ward are simply not playing their positions like Girardi and Callahan the the Lightning “worker bees”….it’s part of an overall depth issue.

We obviously still need a “star” DE…otherwise though we have some decent stars on this team especially on the offense. We need to find the supplemental grunts.

Just watch the Lightning. They are soooo loaded with talent that everybody knows they have a very good team…even after they missed the playoffs last year. But what is making the Lightning a GREAT team is not just that lineup of stars…except at Goalie perhaps…and the Lightning are great there as well…but it’s the worker bees…the REST of the team that now has made the Lightning not just very good but great.

Who are the unsung worker bees that people don’t normally talk about on the Bucs are doing that? Swaggy is the perfect example of what I’m talking about.
Cooper and Yzerman would unload his fat butt ASAP.

The Bucs depth problems are not just at CB they are at the “worker bee’ positions.

  31. Drew Says:

Let’s do the math… no PASS RUSH + no CORNER BACKS = HIGH SCORING GAME by an OPPONENT and a LOSS.

My Math has always been pretty solid Joe and don’t feel I need to check my work on this one.

  32. Arealbucfan Says:

It’s not like it could get any worse.. Grimes hasn’t been himself this year and if you look at his facial expressions and body language it’s obvious why he hasn’t… maybe there will be a silver lining and one of these young bucks will step up for the Bucs… Sterling Moore I thought played well for us but rumor has it he has a bad attitude, but attitude is what I believe the Bucs need.. everyone on defense other than a few hungry players seem to be going through the motions, either way it couldn’t get much worse than it already is… I’ve been cussing at the tv and let down at ray jay almost every Sunday this season but the fact remains my b!tching and moaning at worth a velvet painting of a whale and a dolphin getting it on.. with that being said I’ve been a buc fan for 30 years and a couple of losses won’t change it.. either dang way GO BUCS

  33. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Cam is not a very good passer as a QB but this may set up to be a ravens or falcons game a few years ago where it was 0-42 at half

  34. Arealbucsfan Says:

I watched VH3 press all game last week and he he played well. This is the time
For a redemption! Step up VH3 and show us what ur really made of!

  35. Defense Rules Says:

Dusthty, I don’t know about 0-42 at the half. Don’t think the Bucs have ever scored that many in a half. But hey, anything’s possible with this Bucs’ team.

  36. SB Says:

I am in a FF league locally here that is a $500 entry fee. I started Cam, KB, and Christian McCaffery. I am currently in second place but I still hope they all sh!t the bed Sunday. I just don’t have confidence in that actually happening.

  37. BUC IT Says:

The thing that bugs me about the buccaneer organization is that they are consistently well under the salary cap and we always are pathetic when it comes to our depth. That’s so annoying. I like the OJ howard pick and I also like the Chris Godwin pick as well but these were luxury players that we didn’t need. We should’ve drafted from positions with serious need.

  38. Joeypoppems Says:

^ WR was a serious need

  39. mark2001 Says:

Over/Under on Cams passing yards? Maybe 375?

  40. Joeypoppems Says:

Thank god I love the NFL draft and dont mind looking ahead to it in mid October every year lmao

  41. Laura DeMeo Says:

Doesn’t matter who plays corner, as long as they keep playing deep 1/4’s or a 3-3-5 on 3rd and goal at the 5. Smitty has lost his damn mind! And by the by…Bud Light is for pu$$ies. Have reg. Bud or drink water.

  42. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

no bucs were being beat 0-42 at the half…. ummm byron maxwell???

  43. StPeteBucsFan Says:

How soon we forget. Last year all I read about on JBF was #weaponsforJameis

and clearly we did need to improve our offense. We’ve done that….the O is finally beginning to mesh and as they continue to play as a unit I think the O line will continue to improve and #3 and DK are starting to finally work in DJAX and OJ. So we wanted to fix our offense and did.

Next year it’ll be #weaponsforsmitty. Let’s hope this draft is loaded with DE’s and DTs and CB’s and Safeties!!!

  44. Joeypoppems Says:

Idk about #WeaponsForSmitty. At this rate it will be #WeaponsFor(insert new DC name here)

  45. Defense Rules Says:

Dusthty, just pulling your leg. And yes, if I were Licht, I’d certainly be looking at Byron Maxwell at this point.

  46. LakeLand Says:

lol The Bucs have over $18 Million in cap space. They should have solid depth at every position. No excuse, excuses are for losers. Wait a minute, I forgot the Bucs are Perennial Losers.

  47. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    If this is really true

    Then

Look for the panthers to put up 30 points while the bucs will only score 17.

Bucs lose…..and season will be officially over.

Top 10 draft pick…..here we come!!!!!

  48. uckinator Says:

I remember when the Bucs drafted Hargraves with the 9th pick (?). Most draft boards had him as a top 3 corner. He’s a “little” short, but that’s okay; he’s quick. He’s not very fast, but that’s okay, he very quick and closes fast. Now, all we got is a short slow corner. Sorry Licht, I like your later round picks, but you gotta hit on your one’s & two’s !

  49. Pelbuc Says:

Don’t miss the Jason Licht player personnel horror show on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at the House of Horrors also known as the Den of Depression. It’s gonna be real scary!

  50. pepsi Says:

whelp… I wasnt expecting the Dline to turn it around this year, so I already accepted the fact we’re not going to the playoffs. So lets get Ryan Smith in there to see if he takes steps forward to maybe be a contributor next season.

  51. JWilson1016 Says:

Grimes last press conference was just sad. He got burnt plenty in Buffalo. Maybe he was injured I don’t know, either way sad state for the guy and our secondary.

  52. Tampa Bay Tailgater Says:

And last Thursday you were calling for Dirk to allow Monken to call Offensive plays, now saying the offense is moments away for being great. Stop overreacting over every little move. They will win Sunday and however the rest pans out, so be it.

Maybe this is supposed to happen to showcase some talent we haven’t seen. Then we have depth and Grimes coming back next week if he doesn’t play this week.

Everything will be ok. Screenshot this if you have to.

  53. LakeLand Says:

Whoa, what a shot by Kiko Alonso to Joe Flacco head. Now that’s a hit.

  54. ARGH_M8E Says:

    Better score 40+ simple.

  55. Not there yet Says:

It doesn’t matter who’s back there because with the defensive philosophy everyone back there is getting roasted anyway. Even reeling Panthers or so the Joe’s call them, they are better than us anyway didn’t say more talented but they’ll win because they play with passion and fire. Mike Smith doesn’t strike me as fiery type and he is coaching scared this year like he wants a top ten pick to draft as defensive end

  56. Issic Haggins Says:

Who in there right mind goes into a season with this corner depth and group period !!

  57. LakeLand Says:

Issic Haggins..Jason Licht is the answer.

  58. WesTampaBuc Says:

Watch out forDeji Olatoye is a 6-2, 205-pound Cornerback former Atlanta Falcon, knows the scheme and is probably a plug n play guy because of his familiarity with the system. And the fact he’s hungry could be a huge plus

  59. FortMyersDave Says:

I would love to see Tampa man up and beat the Panthers but this game has all the trappings of an embarrassing beat down. Team has key defensive injuries and can not stop any one and since the O played rather well in Buffalo they will likely lay an egg on Sunday, typical Bucs. Bucs could probably lose to any nFL team right now except perhaps the Fins and speaking of them did everyone see that 40-0 beat down? Well, knowing our Bucs we could see something like that vs Carolina if the Bucs play like they have in the last 3 losses.

  60. ElioT Says:

    F**k it boys!

    It is what it is.

This is the bed Licht, Koetter, Smith and some of the vets made.

Time to take a sh*t or get off the pot!!!

Personal and the collective pride is at stake.

What type of men sit there and let it happen?

  61. ElioT Says:

    It’s their 11 vs. your 11!!

How can these vets, these defensive all-pros, pro-bowlers, talented football players and men tolerate this garbage???

Who is going to step up?

Who is going to get dirty and put up a big mother f** king road block on this defensive highway to hell/shame???

  62. ElioT Says:

    Turn around and fight boys.

7th Cav!! The Bucs’ last stand!!!

  63. sorryitriggeredyou Says:

@ElioT YAAAAS F##k it indeed. Just go out and play, have fun. Let JW unleash and hope that Panthers O has an off day. They might just luck out and win! Doesn’t matter if Grimes plays or not. Fornette will cream their corn Sunday. Cam will throw for 3 hundred and look all world again. Just expect this stuff this season. It’s ok. Enjoy that offense. They are special.

  64. Mike Johnson Says:

Look out for my new book titled, THE HARD LIFE OF A BUCS FAN..hitting newstands after this Sundays loss. It will also feature a section on..Monday morning Buc hangover tips!

  65. Negative Jeff Says:

Kats = 42 Yucks = 24, JW passes for 450 yards. 2 TD and 2 INT . The passing records are falling!

  66. Will-In-The-Midwest Says:

We’re just going to have to win a shoot out!

  67. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

No Bayers, we as fans did not contribute the ass whipping they got in MN and Buffalo. We also didn’t cause Nick Folk to shank his pitching wedge shots against the Patriots.

  68. LongSeason Says:

Can’t the Bucs go to a local Kindergarten and sign three rookies from there that could do better than who we will have playing this Sunday?

  69. Wausa Says:

Should the Bucs only draft corners and defensive ends at the 2018 NFL draft?

This is pathetic to have two position groups in such horrific shape and that’s not even including the running back position.

  70. Mo_Downs Says:

You are what your record says you are. And, STATS don’t lie except when the yardage on offense is mostly from the 4th qtr when the opposition defense is leading by more than 2 scores and is in cruise control.

Speaking of cruise control; the Bucs’ defense is running prevent defense, Cover-0, from the start of games.

What’s not being considered in all these critiques is that the Bucs are suffering from attrition more than the opposition, so far. The defense hasn’t been healthy all season. Starters are spending more games out than in. We finally gave up on several players who aren’t healthy enough to EVER be on the field.

It shows up in the stats and W/L when our leading tacklers (Alexander and LaVonte) are not available or are playing on crutches.

  71. Duke Says:

    Mo,
Cov 0 is man and they ain’t playing that.

  72. Conte Piscateli Says:

All we need now is to find out Derek Anderson is going to start and we can see how many records get broken.

  73. Supersam Says:

Grimes and miko are just collecting checks at this point, he’s cashed his chips in.

  74. LifeOfABucFan Says:

LK is playing after all..bad news indeed…Lukie Dukie..

and LOL Pablo…it’s a good thing my baby making factory shut down 3 years ago…
