Simeon Rice chatter.
Boy, Simeon Rice sure has Bucs fans stirred up.
The Bucs’ edge rush (what edge rush?) is so beyond pathetic, so beyond insulting, so non-existent that in any other element of American commerce there either would be a federal grand jury convened, or state officials would storm the front doors and pull peoples’ licenses for such rank ineptitude. A 43-year old former player who hasn’t played in a decade seems like an upgrade.
If the Bucs were so desperate and signed Rice, not only would it be shamefully embarrassing for the organization, but it would be the equivalent of a restaurant manager, fed up with his chef serving vomit-inducing, disease-riddled dishes, dragging his 95-year old grandfather out of a nursing home to take over because 60 years prior the old man made a name for himself for cooking up a mean plate of spaghetti.
Former Bucs defensive coach Herm Edwards, now a BSPN talker, tried to suppress his laugh while entertaining Rice returning to the fields of the NFL.
Instead of coming back to play, Edwards said Rice should return to be a Bucs pass-rushing coach — and if the Bucs sign Rice, it should be as an assistant coach.

Boy, Simeon Rice sure accomplished his mission and that is to get the whole football world focused some attention on him again. It’s probably the most he’s had since the last time he played a down in the NFL 10 years ago.

Rice is TOO much of a free spirit to surrender to a coaches life…..however bringing him in to watch and contribute his insight as a change up, basically hearing from him, what the coaches are already saying might serve as reinforcement……sure the Buc’s might have a few holes in the talent available……but that is nothing compared to the hole in the heart of the locker room…. I see a pack of emotional slackers…no want too….just line up for each snap…no fire…

What has Bucs fans stirred up is the lack of a fluffin pass rush. Thanks Jason Licht! Wonder if he still feels like the smartest guy in the room the way he did when he nailed that 2014 FA haul or like when he traded up to draft the worst kicker in NFL history! This guy is such a joke and all the fanboys refused to see it because they preferred to just say “Evans” “Winston” and bury their heads deep in Licht’s stinkhole.
DallasBuc has been right about everything so far going back to the hiring of incompetent Lovie Smith and his lapdog Licht and of course the fanboys won’t admit it.

Just because you see a few seconds clip of Simeon working out doesn’t mean he can hack it at his age on an NFL level.
You can’t beat father time…..
and if late 20s and early 33s yr old men cannot make at impact 10 yrs younger than Simeon, what makes you think a 43 yr old and that hasn’t played an NFL down in 10 years can?????
Just because you “THINK” you can do something physically doesn’t mean you “CAN”.

Frankly, I would fire Licht if he put Rice on the field…..it would be an open admission of outright failure and he would be a laughing stock of the NFL.
Sure, we need to seriously address the problem now if we can….a change of scheme seems to be the only viable answer…perhaps a mid-season trade…but mostly we will address it in the draft & FA next year.
Sure Licht has made mistakes not simply with the pass rush…..Dominick made the same….We should have some proven veterans on our team until the problem is solved….Peppers/Freeny etc.
Hire Rice….sure, why not?

While I don’t doubt that there are a couple like that (Baker for one), I think most of the defense is hungry for success, so I think you are wrong.
The coaches and GM can never say it because it would turn the locker room against them, but the issue really is talent and youth.
Because he had to focus on building the offense through the draft first, Licht had to make due with Free Agents that:
1 Were willing to come to Tampa
2 Were within budget
3 Are mostly past their primes
4 Have histories of major injuries
5 Are the best available that meet all of the first 4 points
But other than RB, the offense is done now. So he can finish off the defense with real talent from the next draft.

DallasBUc right on Licht has been abysmal as a GM and talent evaluator during his tenure here in Tampa, from move one on the ifrst day of letting donald penn walk to the pitiful drafts that he has screwed up and everyone has lauded what a genius this buffoon is….the bucs are in terrible shape with a bottom 5 defense that is not going to get better anytime soon

Him and Sapp would be good consultants only. Not many ex players are into full time coaching but it really feels like Smith needs ex players who were in the trenches to give him advice which is sad that him and his coaching staff can’t figure it out. If you need another assistant coach or consultant to help do this job then you or your scheme are washed up like for instance Lovie Smith

On another note Rice is embarrassing this franchise even more by suggesting as a senior citizen in football years he can make us better. Lifting weights is one thing but pushing bodies around is another thing entirely

Calm down. You do know the core players in the best passing attack in the NFL were acquired by Licht, no?
And aside from one player (Lavonte David), arguably the deepest linebacker corps this team has ever had were also acquired by Licht?
Understand your frustration but let’s not get carried away.

YES it would be profoundly laughable to put him on the field, but not as much as some of you make it out to be. Some of you guys are making a false equivalency of your 43yr old dad bods that can only squat about 95lbs to a man that that can still deadlift a volvo and is shredded. Age is a cop out generally speaking, and if you cared to look at his instagram – you’d know he is more physically fit than prob 80% of the team. The biggest difference in age (provided you stay in shape) is the recovery. Simeon can prob damn well play 20 snaps a game, but doing it week to week would not be realistic. So while i agree he shouldn’t be on the field – i disagree to some of you comparing a typical 43yr with a beer gut to guys that are still as strong as they were when they were 25

Our pass rush is anemic yes though signing Rice to play is ridiculous. I wouldn’t be opposed to have him come in and coach the D-Line, that I would be thrilled to have him help these guys out cause they sure need it. I mean at this point what we have at D-Line is what we have unless you want to give a ton away to bring in a superb talent that will have to learn our defensive schemes halfway through the season. If anything this year demonstrates while we attempted to shore up holes on our roster we didn’t get the right guys. And as much as we’d like to think that D-Line is going to be the focus I’d say our secondary play is much more concerning this season.

At least Rice cares. He was done with football and was making clothes and movies. Now our complete collapse has him throwing his remote at the TV and has inspired him. HIRE HIM!

Tampabaybucfan – I am fairly certain Rice is still better at 43 years of age then the play of our current DE’s . Give a week and evaluate. At this point with a 9 percent chance of making the playoffs the organization has nothing to lose. Make him an immediate DE coach and you will see a significant upgrade in the current Defensive line play.

Simeon said it best himself today in the TBT. He’s not going to embarrass himself and what do we have to lose? I think it’s a great story and all the talking heads will love it. And just maybe he can teach the youngsters how to handle high expectations and what to do when you get there.

Move Ayers or gholston move inside, line up Beckwith at DE. Put your best players on the field.
One problem I see with the 34 alignment. Clinton Macdonald is strong player,
But he and GMC have similar skillsets. I think they are both best at the three technique. Baker has been a big disappointment.

I think the last part left off the article is it would be a huge slap in the face to Coach Hayes, who is the DL coach with a great NFL tenure.
This issue is solely on the players effort and Smith’s scheme plus inability to adjust.

Simeon Rice was and continues to be a physical freak. But I do not believe even Sim’s impressive skill set can hold up at age 43.
But before everybody writes him off…freaking Gordie Howe played in the NHL at 50!!!! Skating a minute shift is much harder than that 10 seconds of burst Sim would need to produce. My questions about Sim are not so much about his physical ability to get to the passer…the bigger challenge of being 43 is that the body simply cannot heal as quickly. A couple of games against the NFL bruisers might be all that he could get in before his body broke down with the injuries.
Am I the only person here who is just mildly suspicious that the HOF might have something to do with this. IMO…yeah I’m prejudiced but Sim belongs in the HOF.
All this chatter around the league about Sim coming back at 43 and bringing his name back to the forefront will hopefully help IRA when he has to pitch Sim’s case to the HOF committee.

Simeon Rice’s last stop in football was not on the bucs, the broncos, or any other NFL team. it was in a second-tier pro\semi-pro league and he did not replicate the success of his prime years against that level of competition. now 10 years later he is going to dominate NFL tackles?
5 reps full-go against Dononovan Smith will remind him why he is making movies now.
There’s no honor in embarassing a legend. Coach\mentor? 100% on board. Player? That ship sailed long ago

I’m with SPBF, this is Simeon remininding the world he was amazing in his day. i doubt he actually wants to reset his HOF clock, or further tarnish his chances by getting punked by linemen 2 decades younger than him. He just wants folks to remember he was a really, really good football player, a fact that has been criminally forgotten by a vast majority of NFL fans. Lesser DEs with bigger names have been leapfrogging him into HOF consideration for years, and he’s trying to restart the buzz
