Jameis Seeking To “Play Cleaner”
October 12th, 2017Joe’s confident 86.1 percent of Buccaneers fans would have bet against America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, throwing zero interceptions in three of his first four games of 2017.
It would have been a safe bet, given Jameis threw 33 interceptions in his first 32 career games, and that he labeled himself “a risk-taker” in August.
However, Jameis has busted the odds. He three three picks at Minnesota, but none against the Bears, Giants and Patriots. (And shutup if you’re saying to yourself there were plenty of near picks. That’s Mike Mayock territory.)
So what does Jameis think about his ball security? He was asked that today at One Buc Palace.
“I’ve just got to keep that in the back of my mind all of the time,” Jameis said. “That’s the main goal. That’s the main goal is to protect that football. That’s why I said I’ve just got to play better. You know only one game where I turned the ball over a lot. And turned it over a lot that one game, but just got to play better overall. Precision, decisions, progressions – I feel great out there, but just got to play cleaner.”
Joe liked the “cleaner” close there. He is on the money. Jameis has had too many throws — even completions — off the mark. And it feels like he’s been a little less confident throwing the rock this season.
Jameis is very hard on himself, and Bucs fans also love to nitpick relentlessly. Perhaps they all know Jameis must be better than Drew Brees, Cam Newton or Matt Ryan throughout the next 12 games for the Bucs to have a chance at the playoffs.

Hes been much more patient with his longer throws. I think thats why he hasnt connected on a few, because hes trying to not underthrow and be picked off. Give the recievers a shot to catch up to it instead. I like the style he has lately, just needs to find his second and third reads a bit quicker or slide more in the pocket before rolling out,
October 12th, 2017 at 5:04 pm
He is playing too scared of the ints. Either that or he is just never gona be a qb who sees the field well, and can lead a covered receiver to where only he has a shot. So many one on ones down the sideline evans has, where a back shoulder throw is money. Dbs arent even looking. He is waiting until the guy is open too often. Ive seen desaun watson already doing what jameis isnt yet. I love me some jameis but i hope he learns some new tricks, to take it to the next level. It never comes to some qbs, theyre always gona wait until their guys open, or they hit the ground. Maybe he isnt given the freedom to, who knows. All i know is the passing game is still off, n we havnt seen many hits in stride in 3 years. Help him out dirk. N i guess i am nitpicking, but the guy is loaded with talent, yet it seems something is off. This offense has the potential to be special. I say we hit the hurry up early in games. Jameis excels in those instances. Go Bucs
October 12th, 2017 at 5:05 pm
Just calm down and make those throws. Everything else will take care of itself
October 12th, 2017 at 5:14 pm
Interesting observations Canadabucsfan. I think I see him being somewhat more patient than he was last year, but it’s not translating into a higher % of completions yet. Tend to think that’s largely because he’s being asked to throw less short stuff this year (but more intermediate passes) than he did the last 2 years for one thing, and also because our OLine is doing a much better job of pass protection this year IMO. Personally I’d like to also see Jameis roll out more too … and run if the defense doesn’t adjust quick enough (to out of bounds preferably; Jameis doesn’t seem to like to slide for some reason).
October 12th, 2017 at 5:18 pm
Or keep him from pleasing/force feeding djax rather than getting chemistry slowly. It’s probably not the issue but it sure looks that way at times.

LOL Rishard Mathews says he will quit playing football if forced to stand for the Anthem
Good go be a delivery boy or sell cars or something.
October 12th, 2017 at 5:22 pm
Other than downfield accuracy….the only problem I have and it may be with Koetter not Jameis is the third down passes……if we need 5 yards, we always seem to be throwing for 15 or 20 (low percentage passes)……we need plays that are more guaranteed to move the chains on 3rd down….we have killed countless drives with these types of throws on 3rd down.
October 12th, 2017 at 5:24 pm
Why are they not scoring more points? That’s the real issue with this offense. They are doing everything correct, except for scoring points.
October 12th, 2017 at 5:24 pm
I hope I am wrong but I’ve gone from thinking Winston is a lock for the HOF to is he just another Trent Dilfer. Gamer w/ guts but little accuracy

We should have beaten the Pat’s and Winston would be looking much better right now. That drop in the end zone by Brate was the difference in the game. Jameis hasn’t played great this year but should still be 3-1 since he is protecting the football. I am ALWAYS bitchin’ about how bad Winston plays but will try to keep my mouth shut until it is him that is losing games. If he can keep from throwing INT’s we are going to win more games than we lose. Hope James can show us that he is worth 20+ million a year by the end of this year. His accuracy and deep ball are the only problems I really see. Oh, he lacks TOUCH! Keep it up though JW3, looks like you are getting better at NOT throwing picks. You looked bad in Minnesota though. Go BUCS!
October 12th, 2017 at 5:53 pm
@Joe
Some in the know where already saying the same thing this morning!!!!! I guess we know where JW3 gets his Buc news from!!!!!!!! OMG its another “Realist Repost”!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Buc Realist Says:
October 12th, 2017 at 5:36 am
We tried to tell you this would happen!!!!! I do think a factor is that JW3 is late and inaccurate with throws because he is really just starting to see the defense and over-protecting the ball the last couple of games!!!!! But we did warn the sheep!!!!!
October 12th, 2017 at 6:05 pm
As I’ve said from day 1… Keep slingin it Jameis!
October 12th, 2017 at 6:14 pm
“Play Cleaner”
My first thought was that he wanted to ‘clean’ up evidence of a criminal act…
October 12th, 2017 at 6:15 pm
I think Winston will come close to or pas the 5,000 yard mark this year. That will earn him some recognition.
October 12th, 2017 at 6:17 pm

I think you’re spot on with your comments, but a lot of people on this site are still in ‘plausible denial” is what I call it.
Jameis doesn’t play like what 1st overall pick should be playing like. Look at QBS like Carson Wentz………..shinning and taking that “next leve” step, while Jameis still looks the same…….and fans are still complaining about the same ol issues from him.
People are finally speaking out about his flaws after NE game………and Jameis is finally exposed nationally………but his flaws are the same flaws us Buc fans have been saying from day one.
IMO……..Jameis will have a good career like a Carson Palmer, buy he’ll never be an elite QB due to his flaws.
The Bucs are still lucky to have him.
October 12th, 2017 at 6:59 pm
Check this out…………..
> Bing Predicts winner: Tampa Bay (61%)
> Kickoff time: 4:05 PM EDT (Sunday)
> Game spread: Arizona -1
> Matchup history: Cardinals lead 10-9-0
If only Jameis Winston — or anyone on the Bucs’ roster — could kick field goals. The Bucs (2-2) basically lost in Week 5 to the Patriots because Nick Folk was 0-for-3 in field goals. Still, the Bucs have the edge on the road in Arizona. Winston has gone two games without throwing an interception, although Tampa’s defense is ranked 30th in the NFL, allowing a whopping 396.2 yards per game.
October 12th, 2017 at 7:38 pm
Doesn’t play like a first pick. Blahahaa. Jameis is a very good qb. As youth as he can be he will have his issues. Who doesn’t. Look at the systems they play. Those systems don’t ask for the qb to much. Wentz in this system will be an instant bust. Don’t read into stats man
October 12th, 2017 at 8:24 pm
Okay @Lamarcus, with that logic, why doesn’t Koetter tailer the system so it takes advantage of Winston’s strengths and not expose his weaknesses? Wentz is benefiting from an open minded coach whereas Winston is dealing with a guy who is stuck in his ways.
October 12th, 2017 at 8:33 pm
The game is about to kickoff….should be a good one.
October 12th, 2017 at 8:47 pm
First thought as I am watching this game. Wentz looks like what we wish JW looks like.
Second thought……..Eagles have a Rookie, Undrafted kicker that has a 61 yarder and just hit a 50 that would have been good from 60
SMH
October 12th, 2017 at 10:35 pm
That eagles ROOKIE kicker is MONEY.
October 12th, 2017 at 10:37 pm
I’m watching Cam Newton tonight throw picks near his own goal line giving the Eagles a easy touchdown drive of 3 yards. Cam has 8 TD’s and 6 picks. I don’t hear Romo say a peep yet he nit picked Jameis to death last week. Sometimes I wonder what the fans want. No team has any respect for our running game the first 3 weeks and I am tired of worrying about desean freaking Jackson. Just throw to the open man if we win I don’t care if Evans and Jackson have zero catches. Cut Jameis some slack, he’s gonna be here for the next 12 plus years.
October 12th, 2017 at 10:41 pm
Hey SB, go move to Philly and enjoy watching Wentz. Different team, a top 3 front 7 , awesome running game. We don’t have that, so quit comparing or dreaming, Geez you guys R INSANE!!!!!
October 12th, 2017 at 10:56 pm
I came hear to comment on the way wentz looks and how cam newton despite his picks every throw is right there. Watching these two 4-1 teams just shows how far jameis has to go. I would honestly have to say wentz is better than jameis. Joe you will never admit you just throw stats down our throats of why he is so good. I’m just giving it the naked eye test and jameis still looks like a rookie with his accuracy compared to wentz. And I still can’t get over you saying you can’t believe we are talking about the pics he almost threw in every game. He should have about 8 pics even if they didn’t pic it it is still a terrible throw when the db has a better chance than the wr. I just would like you to be unbiased once and put out a real article on Winston and his accuracy struggles. But I’m sure we will keep getting his stats stories. He has 4000 2 years blah blah blah. Most are when the game is out of reach. I wish you would do an article on how many times he threw for 300 yards and had under 100 at half and game was out of reach. Quit coddling him he seems like he would do better with media calling him out instead of sucking him off. But yeah he hasn’t thrown a pick in 3 of the 4 games. But he still has 3 picks in 4 games we can all turn it to look how we want it. Year 3 not 1 and he is still making same bone headed plays and still can’t hit a receiver in the first half. So either blast the coach or blast jameis instead of all these Martin hate articles. I compare jameis to Philip rivers. They both put up big stats but any given game they could throw 4 tds or 4int. And look at what the chargers have done with that been a mediocre team for 10+ years. I feel that is where we are headed.
October 12th, 2017 at 11:14 pm
Jameis is a work in progress. He’s been hyped and built up for reputation that will take him time to reach. I don’t think he will get where we want him for another couple years. He’s not quite seeing the field like we thought he would. He will get there though. He has the ambition and drive. One game at a time. On to the desert and the AZ Cardinals. Winnable game if we bring it!
October 12th, 2017 at 11:53 pm
Meanwhile we have Cam throwing a pick under blitz pressure on primetime football to end a competitive game… crickets. We’ve also seen many people pointing out some of the same exact deficiencies of Newton since his rookie year. Which is odd, because it seems we have quite the double standard for people like Cam Newton compared to what Jameis has done. Always an excuse for when Cam plays recklessly and shows sloppy mechanics with a great defense and running game; conversely, always the fault of JW when we have EPIC meltdowns in the secondary or special teams.
All that being said, Jameis does need to start faster. We have definitely left explosive plays on the field early in games. It’s half him being too amped and scattershotting throws, and half on the gameplan failing to use our weapons appropriately and trying to get too fancy. Get Desean the ball in space on shorter concepts (there’s other ways to use his speed, Dirk…), control the hashes with Brate and Martin, throw backshoulders to Mike up the sideline all day, then use the play-action and scheme OJ into a mis-match or three.
October 12th, 2017 at 11:57 pm
^^ He barely got me 23 Points in my Money league. If he didn’t throw the Picks it would have been 10 extra points at least.
October 13th, 2017 at 12:27 am
What running game Cam have? Carolina gained 80 yards and Cam gained 71 of them.
October 13th, 2017 at 1:25 am
You’re right, he was their running game tonight. I’m speaking of historically, since he’s been there I feel like they’ve had strong rushing attacks more often than not.
October 13th, 2017 at 3:19 am
Lol
Defense is 30th in the league, and we think Jameis might be the problem!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
( for Realist!)
Again, its not Madden
A new Center, Guard, TE, WR and 4 set WR
And People are actually asking why Jameis is a lil off so far!!
Lmao
Get a +^%+*^> DE, and CB to start across from Grimes. Sorry Mr.Licht, looks like this Hargreaves kid may be a bust- Still like the job your doing.
Now get a #>^+*£ DE!! No more BS excuses !!!’
We fix that on defense, Get a reliable kicker
And Jameis will take us to the Playoffs.
Hes the real deal!
If only we had a DE . . . And CB . . .
October 13th, 2017 at 4:40 am
One can only hope Jameis never visits this website. With the comments of some of the ‘fans’, he will never be able to get his mind right again…
He has to start fast vs. he has to stay calm and not be so fired up
He has to be the leader of the team vs. he should use some Zen stuff to come down
He has to make the plays downfield vs. he shouldn’t take risks
He has to stand up in the pocket vs. he has to get the ball out quicker
He has to run more vs. he should avoid getting hits
So what should he do?? You have to accept, that you can’t have your cake and eat it too!
Some of you say, his stats come from garbage time. In my world, if you have a final throw from 19 yds out to win a game against the World champions, there is no garbage time.
Jameis is best when Koetter unleashes him in desperation mode or in two-minute drills. To me it’s the best, allowing Jameis to be Jameis!
October 13th, 2017 at 8:17 am
I’m a little perplexed , why a qb that ran through his check downs as fast as any college QB ever seems to be half as efficient as a Pro. I really have to question some of the coaching up he is receiving.
He clearly goes through his check downs slower less effectively as a Pro than he did under Jimbo
And for the sake of winning football get him out of the pocket a lil more , he and every other QB not named Manning or Marino are much much more effective when the field is cut down . Hello !!! The goal is to WIN not satisfy ones inner coaching challenge to make someone a great pocket passer
October 13th, 2017 at 9:38 am
Tim I thought you understood football. When an Offense can’t stay on the field then the Defense will Always give up more yards.
And to Jimmy T …….You can suck one. I have been a fan since 76 and I will express my opinions however I dam well please.
October 13th, 2017 at 11:12 am
Man, some people get awfully touchy on here. Too funny! Okay, DK is in his 2nd year as a HC. Jameis is getting used to DeSean Jackson, OJ Howard, etc. in the offense. Me thinks some patience is needed. I HOPE Murray can kick! That’s why we gave the game to the Putz Thursday night. We will beat AZ Sunday as long as Murray makes his kicks. Cripes! Go Bucs!!
October 13th, 2017 at 6:53 pm
I hope Jameis is going to become the QB that we’d all like to see in Tampa, however if he hasn’t made that “next step” by game 16 this season then what? Seems like alot of wheel spinning at a certain point, doesn’t it?
