Jameis Winston: “I Want To Be That Person That Gets Yelled At”

September 14th, 2017

Jameis explains

There’s a great Bill Parcells story that Joe referenced once on the Ira Kaufman Podcast.

Simply explained, Hall of Fame coach Parcells occasionally would advise his star Giants quarterback, Phil Simms, that he was going to rip him a new one in front of the entire team at some point during practice. Call it a staged motivational event.

Parcells would go off on Simms and the rest of the Giants would say to themselves, ‘Wow, if Coach goes after Simms like that, then what would he do to me if I screw up?’

America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, offered his own spin on that type of accountability this afternoon at One Buc Palace.

Jameis said he wants to be that guy absorbing the hollering and verbal abuse from his head coach.

Here’s the transcription from Buccaneers media relations:

“I look at it from a father-son perspective because that’s a relationship that, me and coach [Jimbo] Fisher had at Florida State – and he was harder on me than anyone else. As a head coach, you’ve got to be able to count on certain guys for the team to be successful. I want to be able to be the person that is held accountable,” Jameis said.

“I’m already the quarterback – the quarterback is already the one who gets scrutinized for most things and even if [he] throws three picks, he played a good game. I want to be that person that gets yelled at in front of their teammates to make them feel better, just like, ‘Okay, our quarterback is getting yelled at too.’ I think that helps with guys. All that is is adversity in the moment when you’re getting yelled at. Your coach isn’t going to be on the field when you are playing a game so when you have that moment in practice, more often than in a game – Coach [Dirk] Koetter in the game is more laid back than anybody and he is ready to play – but practice is different.”

What a mature 23-year-old Jameis is. Joe is consistently amazed.

Most interesting there by Jameis was his characterization of candid, high-energy Dirk Koetter being a calm, cool customer during games versus in practice. Not every coach can turn it on and off like that.

Jameis is what ALL young QBs should aspire to be … absolutely dedicated to winning, truly caring for his coaches and teammates, a leader not only in the locker-room but in the community, no drama off the field … and … one heck of a football player!

    I LOVE JABOO!

  2. BuccaneEric75 Says:

Jameis is the man, and this quote by him is the evidence that Skip Bayless is a moron. Winston likes the tough love, and Bayless thinks that’s a bad thing. Winston will prove Skip wrong and take us to the playoff! FU Skip!

  3. Tampabaybucfan Says:

It’s admirable that Jameis want’s the one to take the screaming….but NO….we don’t want Jameis to have to be screamed at at all…..that means he probably is playing well…..If Jameis is receiving a lashing from his coaches….something has hurt our chances to win.

I would prefer the scream be for a missed tackle or block or even a dropped pass…..or, better yet….no screaming at all.

Let’s scream at Michael Bennett…..for no good reason!!!

  4. NFLNut Says:

Skip is a pretty big Jameis fan though … he’s said he would take Jameis every time over Mariota … Skip’s biggest issues are that he’s a massive homer (Cowboys and Spurs) and that I believe he’s paid to argue insanity, as in, to take the most idiotic side of a debate and try to make a point.

I actually like Skip and feel bad for him as I believe he’s paid to act like an idiot … he reminds me of the Jesse the Body Ventura of Sports talking heads.

  5. NOSBOS Says:

skip bright tho, bright enough to know his superbowl hopes and dreams for the cowgirls have went up in smoke with the assimilation of this 2017 Bucs football team.

  6. NOSBOS Says:

It’s why keeps mentioning our name he realizes something has taken form over there in the South, something MASSIVE. And it makes him uneasy.

  7. BuccaneEric75 Says:

Skip is not paid to act like an idiot, he IS an idiot. He’s showed love for Winston and now he’s giving himself an out if things blow up! He’s protecting his sorry brand.

  8. NOSBOS Says:

Well in fairness draft night skip was in awwhh of the Bucs. He tweeted something to the effect of “wow,Tampa already has Mike Evans added DeSean Jackson in the offseason and now have drafted O.J. Howard???”. I mean y’all don’t recall the thread where Joe showed the comments from that greenbay packer columnist??? Talkin bout how many in they’re fanbase hope somehow they don’t have to face in the tournament and that they hope run into dallas(me too). Somehow others know and see our potential but many here can’t see the Green Giant standing right in front of them.

  9. unbelievable Says:

Jesse Ventura, lol was just watching a clip of him this morning.

I was thinking more like Hannity or Alex Jones when you said “paid to act like an idiot”.

  10. BartButtPlug Says:

Times have changed. Today’s player wouldn’t be able to comprehend that it’s for the betterment of all. Today’s player is now an actor/celebrity.

  11. Mike Evans GOAT Says:

This Thursday night football is a joke. Two disgusting offenses is gonna make for a LONG BORING game. Fluck this. Lol

    Kinky

  13. ScottyinFatAntonio Says:

This game tonight is how I envision the Bears/Bucs game on Sunday.

  14. Mike Johnson Says:

Luv Winston’s attitude. He has a, Tim Dunkin type tude. Coach Pop yelled at him at every practice. And he took it! Other players got the message. Spurs were Champs for a lotta years behind Timmy. Lets hope our Bucs can do the same behind Jameis.

  15. Buc1987 Says:

“I mean, the guy is such a kindhearted people guy. He loves people,” “He loves to be around people, not from a standpoint of ‘I’m Jameis Winston.’ He generally likes people. He’s fun to be around. He’s genuine. He’s honest. He’s just a good guy. He really is.” –Jimbo Fisher in 2014

  16. Mike Evans GOAT Says:

PAC-man Jones has been wearing John Rosses helmet all night. I wounded why? The number on the back of his helmet said 24 on the first drive, then from the 2nd drive on it has said number 15

  17. NFLNut Says:

unbelievable … Alex Jones works for himself and employs others so he isn’t “paid to act” like anything … Skip Bayless is a mere employee of ESPN and I do believe that he is paid to defend insane positions and to be a heel.

If people really think that ESPN talking heads actually say what they believe, they’re naïve … the talking heads are given talking points and told what side to take … it’s all rather silly and many of the media-driven narratives are lazy.

  18. NFLNut Says:

Mike Johnson … I cringed when you said Jameis has a Tim Duncan type attitude as I never liked Duncan, not because he wasn’t “great” as he obviously was, but simply because I felt he was over-rated by many … much like I believe Tom Brady is drastically over-rated.

Jameis might be the most charismatic player in the entire NFL … Tim Duncan may have been the most boring player in the entire NBA … I don’t view Jameis as a Duncan “type” at all.

If you’re talking NBA, I liken Jameis’ personality, charisma and leadership to Magic Johnson more so than anyone else.

  19. NFLNut Says:

Happy Birthday to Deshaun Watson … a win, a TD and a turnover free night on your 22nd birthday is pretty cool.

The above said … he reminds me of Kaepernick … he doesn’t seem to be able to read defenses, seems to be wildly inaccurate, stares down receivers like crazy and looks to run before even looking at his 2nd progression … I imagine he’ll be okay as he plays in the horrible AFC South but he doesn’t look like a franchise savior by any stretch of the imagination to me …

  20. Erik w/ Clean Athletics 'The Kwon Alexander of Bucs fans' Says:

^^^^ EXACTLY what NFLNut said… Sorry that I don’t comment much here any more, guys.. Every single comment that I try to post from my phone says ‘awaiting moderation’ it’s so annoying

  21. Mike Johnson Says:

Well least you got the right name there sir..NFLNUT!!
