Koetter: Player Intelligence Can Be Senseless
September 13th, 2017What about all this talk of Mike Glennon giving valuable information to Bears coaches as they plan for Sunday’s game against the Buccaneers?
Joe asked Dirk Koetter about that process today.
Specifically, Joe asked Koetter if in his many years of NFL coaching, has he ever gotten valuable info from a player on his team who once played for an opponent.
Candid Koetter did not disappoint.
“I mean, coaches have been trying to do that. I mean, ever since I came into the league, coaches have told me about certain teams that would cut a guy and bring another guy in off the street because he played for [an upcoming opponent] Koetter said. “Every time I’ve tried to do that personally, if I asked [the player] 10 questions, about eight of their answers made no sense at all to me, one of them made a little bit of sense, and one of them said, ‘Oh, yeah, we watched the same film.’
“But again a quarterback is maybe a little bit different animal. When Mike [Glennon] left, we had an oath that he was sworn to secrecy. But we’ll see.”
Great stuff there from Koetter. Joe remembers Ronde Barber talking about this subject a handful of years ago and believing intelligence from players who once played for an opponent was often either incorrect, or it accurate but making Bucs defensive players think too much.
Barber’s take was that teams were largely better off without the knowledge.
Before Joe hit Koetter with the question above, Koetter noted Glennon took good notes with the Bucs and certainly was capable of helping his new coaches and teammates.
Interesting chess match ahead, but football is still about blocking and tackling and talent. And the Bucs should win on all those fronts Sunday.

Mike Smith Vs. Glennon! Been looking forward to this match up ever since Mikey went to the Bears. I think a lot of people didn’t see that Bears game but Mike was very good later on in the game. If not for 2 dropped passes for sure a sure TD, we’d be a lot more nervous for this game. I think we still need to be very nervous. Glennon is no joke.

Lest we forget, Mike Glennon left BEFORE DJax came on-board, before OJ & before Chris Godwin. In other words, if the Bears defense gets pre-occupied with the deep threat, Jameis should be able to rip them a new one with the short stuff. Our defense has changed somewhat but they haven’t been huge changes there. If the Bucs DLine can keep consistent pressure up the middle plus stop the run, and if our LBs can keep the short passes to minimal or no gains, then we should be fine.

The fact that he asked for an “oath” tells you all you need to know.

Uh you thought he really made him take an oath? haha Tells us all we need to know.
Love Dirk’s sense of humor.

Stop it. Glennon IS a joke. 40 passes last week, only 1 more than 20 yards and it was incomplete. The Bears receiving corp is a total joke and Whtte went down. They’ll get some meaningless first downs with dump off passes but that’s about it. Unless the Bucs cough it up or blow it on special teams, should be an easy win.

The Bears have a decent offense. They were wounded when both their starting WR’s went on IR. That means run to pass for them and should, barring a complete meltdown by our D, keep them fairly one dimensional. They will have limited success if they run a west coast game plan.
That said, the Bears’ running game is going to be a handful. Any problems with tackling are going to be exposed.
The Bears are not going to win. So, no worries.
Go Bucs…!!!

Bucamania Says:

….should be an easy win.
Falcons probably thought the same thing.

@DRules. If all of those things happen any Sunday, we would win. It’s like saying hey, if the offense is in rhythm, we run the ball well, the defense tackles well, stops the run and doesn’t allow big plays, we should be okay. Um, yes, actually we should dominate the game if all that happens. Chances are a few of those things aren’t going to happen. The hope is we limit the failures.

A man is only as good as his word. Mike seems to be a man with integrity who would rather try to win on his own merits. Let’s hope he loses Sunday. No power, damage control every day. Can’t wait to go to the game. May God bless you all, believers or non-believers. Go Bucs!

Gruden won a Superbowl with his info…doesn’t get any better than that.

The flip side of this is the “double agent” move. If a coach truly believed that their opponent had just received inside information from a former player why wouldn’t that coach lineup in formations that duplicated exactly what the former player knew and then run an entirely different play. It would actually provide a huge advantage for the team that was supposedly “betrayed” by a former player.

Glennon took the defending NFC champs to the last play on Sunday.
He is not to be underestimated. Especially if we let him get set in the pocket.
What can an ex player say that isn’t on film?

Eric
That’s the beauty…Glennon nor the film can really say much about the Bucs.
Glennon did not even practice with DJAX…OJ…Godwin…Sweezy and DK ran such a vanilla offense in the preseason that there’s no film on them either.

Tarik Cohen and Jordan Howard are the guys on the Bears offense that scare me. If we can’t limit the Bears one-two punch we could have trouble. The Bears defense did a decent job of holding down the Falcons too. The dirty birds had the highest scoring offense in the league last year, so giving up 23 points is pretty respectable. There are no easy wins in the NFL. Even when one team routs another, that just means the real hard part was the work they put into preparation during the week. It just looks easy.
