Mike Smith delivered sage wisdom to media today.
Mike Smith has a 67-50 record as an NFL head coach and he has spent many years as a defensive coordinator.
So Smith is a master of the media spin game, but he’s also a master at winning and dissecting situations.
Today at One Buc Palace, Smith wasn’t biting on any alleged negativity arising from the Bucs’ unplanned bye week and hurricane-related evacuations and stress.
Smith made it clear to media that the Bucs are swimming in positives.
No. 1, per Smith, the team had a good walk-through last night at One Buc Palace, something they don’t do on a normal week when Tuesday is the players’ day off.
No. 2? Coaches got Sunday to watch the Bears (this Sunday’s opponent) and break them down, and then watched the Vikings (the Bucs’ next opponent) on Monday night. None of that would happen on a regular week, Smith said.
Distractions are all about attitude, Smith said, they can be found every week or day in the NFL if you look for them.

Biggest advantage is week 1 Bears tape. I don’t see them changing much offensively in their approach and we all know what MG is.

I agree with Matt Hasselback from the other thread. Everyone’s fixated on our offense,but when its all said and done this defense will be considered elite. Combine a high powered offense solid place kicking and one the best punters in the league what do you come up with??? Championship calber should be your answer. To the first posters my prediction is we’ll lead the the league in sacks this season with this none pass rush as you call it.

NOSBOS, lead the league in sacks? I’d take a bet on that. Our D should be good, but the pass rush is the weakest part.

Little food for thought 75,were it not for dallas and n.o deciding to go run heavy against us (which was smart on they’re parts) that 6 weeks very well might have been 7 or 8 weeks leading the league bro. They did so why,because word was traveling fast across this league about our so-called “none pass rush”. That’s why.

Bad point NOSBOS, Dallas was run heavy all year, not just against us. The Saints RBs ran the ball 26 times, a lot of those where after they had the lead. Brees passed the ball over 30 times. Regardless, you’re mistaking my argument. Our pass rush might be improved, I’m just saying that we won’t “lead the league” in sacks. If we are #2 then I was right.

I.predict glennin tosses two.tds.and leads the offemse down the field for another rb score. Smith defense get pushed back by a soft summer wind. Mike Glennon with no elite wr talent will still march down the field with ease. Jay Cutler would have made Smiths D look like pee wee caliber. Its all uo to Jameis. Such a.waste of great talent on defense

75 I post from work bro,takes me a minute to get back sometimes. But dig this,if you know or are familiar with his history like I am you should know 26 rush attempt from sean payton is run heavy bro. He ran it 21x monday night,no back touched it more than 9x. As far dallas gose dak threw it 39x sunday night. I can only imagine the outcome had he thrown that much versus us bro.

We tied for 9th in sacks last year yet folks here keep talking about our “invisible”
pass rush. I do not know if we can go from 9th to first but it’s certainly not out of the question.

StPete., 9th in sacks is good, but that’s not what I’m talking about. I’m talking about our pressure from our D-line. We need to be able to get consistent pressure without blitzing. I don’t want half of our sacks to be from LBs and DBs. That’s all good, but blitzing compromises the back end of your defense. The best defenses are the ones that blitz cause they want to, not cause they have to.

75 last year was year 1 in the scheme bro,my belief is having had a full offseason these dudes are about to reak havoc. “We are light years ahead of where we were this time last season”- Mike Smith. And we differ in opinion a little,I want pressure from the front 4 but I want QBs guessing from occasional LB CB blitzes as well.

Nole, I hear ya. I’m just not convinced that Gholston can improve his pass rushing ability and I’m concerned that Spence slimmed down. If he’s only in on obvious passing downs I’m not sure how much of an impact he’ll have. Spence will only be able to use a speed rush (a 240LB guy won’t be able to bull rush a 300LB guy), and an O-lineman has the advantage if he knows what’s coming. Ayers has been average and McCoy has a major injury history. I’m hoping for the best, but not expecting it. I think if we went to the 3-4 more often our pass rush would be much better. I think we’ll have to go to the blitz more than Smith would want to get consistent pressure. I sure do hope that you’re right and im wrong! Lol

Give you my secret ingredient to us leading the league. Our offense…. You gone have to play keep up with us this year forcing teams to throw the rock bro. Will be harder for teams to employ the “run the rock” tactic to slow our pass rush.

Agree completely. I thought the Falcons were very complacent and only brought their “C” game.
The question I have though is whether it was simply because they knew they clearly had the better team and got complacent…or whether there is any SB hangover that we can hope lingers over their entire season.
