A former Bucs coach weighs in
The first-quarter struggles of America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, are well documented.
And a former Bucs coach seems to believe Jameis is ripe for more of the same Sunday against the Bears.
For those seeking strong analysis of the the Bears’ opening game, a six-point loss to Atlanta, enjoy Dave Wannstedt’s takes here on CBS Sports Radio in Chicago. Greg Schiano’s 2013 special teams coach in Tampa, and the former Bears head coach, Wannstedt largely likes what he saw of Chicago in Week 1.
But Wannstedt wants a greater commitment to the running game — he seemed baffled by Mike Glennon throwing 40 times with terrible efficiency — and he thinks Jameis will deliver gifts.
“I tell you what. Jameis Winston, he’ll throw you a couple of interceptions this week. The way this Bears defense is playing, when they don’t make mistakes, if they play solid, they’re going to be able to get a couple of turnovers off Tampa,” Wannstedt said.
Yes, the Bears picked off Jameis in the first quarter of the their November game last year. And Joe is concerned Jameis will be his usual overhyped self early in the game, especially given the hurricane circumstances and the home crowd.
That’s just how Jameis is until he proves he has matured beyond that. And that early lack of focus usually hurts the Bucs.
That said, the Bucs have all the firepower they need to beat the Bears. If the Bucs defense can just continue its second-half turnaround of the last season, Joe is confident the Bears will be held to 13 or 16 points.

If the Bucs lose to da bears in this first game of the year at home, it would be bad,but not season ending. I, for one, pick the Bucs to swashbuckle the bear cubs and send them home at 0-2 back to momma bear in Chi-town.

8 Bucs starters did not play in week 3 preseason game. So they will not have any meaningful practice and contact for a month.
Also Bucs have had only 2 full practices in the last 12 days since the end of preseason on August 31.
There will be miscommunication on offense and defense, missed tackles, dumb penalties etc. as the team jump straight into NFL game that counts.
Meanwhile Bears are coming off an actual NFL game with real hitting. They dominated the trenches (their OL and DL did a good job) against a team that went to Super Bowl. Bucs defense is not as tough as Falcons D.
It will be a close game. Don’t get too cocky, Bucs fans.

Wannstedt sounds like the famous Blue Oyster Cult producer Bruce Dickinson…yes, THE Bruce Dickinson: “I tell you what. You’re gonna want to include more cowbell on that track.” With Desean Jackson and OJ Howard, this is a different offense than last year.

the bears will be well prepared….they will put our new run defense to the test…the thing im most worried about is drive killing penalties….that usually happens in the first game and I can see a first down or TD being called back because of a penalty…..
regarding Winston, he has to manage the game until its time for him to become super man….be a game manager until its time to make a play….be smart and patient….

I guess he didn’t see the blown coverage that let Austin Hooper go 80 yards. That stiff arm was epic btw. The Bears safety pulled a Conte and got abused. Get off of me!

I really hope Glennon doesn’t come back and take a win. That would be embarrassing considering Glennon wasn’t good enough to play in TB.

Have to give props to the Bears defense, that dline looked pretty good vs Atl. This is going to be a tough game for us. Lots of people still out of power, grocery stores shelves still not normal, as of yesterday, people struggling to find fuel. Things are returning to normal but there is no way to color it other then this week was a hell of a distraction. It will be pretty impressive if the Bucs can fight through all of this and come up with a win. Either way I am excited to finally get to see them play for real!

20+ turnovers last year
Jameis is young, turnover prone QB until he’s not. Made me laugh on hardknocks as he tells Kizer to check it down and listen to his coaches yet Jameis doesn’t do either.
If Jameis plays well and improves like he all hope he does this is easily a 10 win team. If he plays like he did last year then this is a 7 or 8 win team. Up to you #3.
Can’t wait for Sunday.

Wanna-stat is stupid. Glennon cannot throw and catch the ball. He had at least 7 drops by his receiving corp. 3 of them at the end of the game and 2 of them on the goal line

Bucs fans, heed this warning. The short passing game is what torments the Bucs defense. This is NOT a good thing for the Bucs. Also, the Bears O-line is stout. Rock solid unt that will dominate the Bucs average pass rush. Only look at the Browns preseason game to see that’s exactly what happened. Last year, the Bears o line was missing starters. 24-17 Beras. Glennon 2TD O picks. JW 2 picks and 1 TD . Mark the tape.

I actually do not have trouble with Bear 4 ever…at least he was honest about his allegiance…unlike some of our trolls who post as if they’re Lovie’s kids still peoed that daddy got fired.
And if you read his post you can see that he is whistling past the graveyard trying to pump himself up.

That and improved accuracy were tops on my wish list for this year. If the preseason is any indication #3 came through with flying colors. Against both the Bengals and Jags #3 came out calm and cool and immediately led his team down the field. As for improved accuracy…70% says it all.

I remember when Wannstedt and his Bears lost to the Bucs in the 1997 ‘turnaround season’ finale and said something along the lines of the Bucs not being that much more talented than the Bears and my first thought was — what does that say about your coaching?
