Todd Monken Explains What Dirk Koetter Is Like
September 11th, 2017So what should every fan know about Dirk Koetter, not the sometimes F-bombing hurling coach seen on Hard Knocks, the guy working inside the walls of One Buc Palace?
Joe chatted with offensive coordinator/wide receivers coach Todd Monken about this subject recently.
Joe asked Monken what the typical fan should know about Koetter the coach.
Here’s his reply:
“People always ask me all the time: ‘What do you enjoy most about being around Coach Koetter.’ I always say, ‘I’m a better coach when I’m around him.’ What I mean by that is he is one of the most detailed, thorough people I’ve every been around. He doesn’t miss much,” Monken said. “He forces you, at least me, some of the things that aren’t strengths of mine, he forces me to work on those strengths. And that’s what I like about being around him. Yes, he’s a great football coach and a great man, husband, father, all of those things. But he forces you to up your game as a coach and think through everything you’re doing every day, from your individual work, to your meetings, to your group work, to being organized, to teaching, to getting the players information. That’s what I like most about being around him.”
Joe has heard from others about how maniacally detailed Koetter is.
All this confusion, disarray and unknown with the Buccaneers’ schedule must be driving Koetter mad.
Regardless, nice, impressive stuff from Monken, a guy who has a head coach turned around Southern Mississippi.

Koetter is that guy that is tough on you and works your a$$ off, and you thank him for it and don’t want to let him down.

I’ve seen every coach from 1976 to date. Koetter is the best all-around HC in franchise history IMO. He is respected and loved by everyone from ball boys to the Glazers. “Great” is an adjective that fits many players, most of the coaches, the GM and office personnel, and the owners. The pieces are coming together. We can all be very proud of this organization. Good times are coming.

If you think about it…Koetter’s staff is proof of his talent and what kind of a man he is.
As this piece pointed out Moncken could be a head coach in college…probably had a choice of NFL teams…yet he took an OC/WR position with the Bucs to get ME13’s hands/head straightened out and be an OC for an HC who calls his own plays
Smitty came here and stayed here largely because of DK.
DL coach Jay Hayes and LB coach Mark Duffner are also coaches with loaded resumes and success and choices…they picked Koetter and the Bucs.
I get that players may be coming to us because of #3 but the assistant coaches..a very talented lineup are here because of Koetter!

I said this at the beginning of last season… but it seems the current coaching staff is the most talented staff we ever had for this franchise.
When you look down the line from coordinators to position coaches, the overall pedigree is higher than any time that I can remember, except maybe a few years between Dungy and Gruden’s first season.
