Sacking The Sackless
September 1st, 2017George Johnson was pushed around the field by Redskins scrubs last night, and the Bucs have pushed him out the door this morning.
The Bucs’ big offseason defensive end signing of 2015, Johnson didn’t record a sack in Tampa and has been sacked, per NFL Network.
He will be remembered by Joe most for being sackless, and for former Bucs defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier calling him out for being too worn out. Also, Joe will remember Johnson for being a nice guy, quick with a smile and an ever-present positive attitude.
The Bucs actually traded for Johnson, in part, because they liked how well he worked off the edge against Tampa Bay’s miserable left tackles in 2014. Johnson, 29, had six sacks for Detroit that season and was scheduled to earn $2.25 million this season.

The first cousin of ghost johnson

No more DEs named Johnson, please.
September 1st, 2017 at 10:31 am
No more free rides. He been there waaayyyy too long
September 1st, 2017 at 10:34 am
I was hoping he would somehow contribute this year.
Damn this team is thin at DE…
Robert Ayers
Will Gholston
Noah Spence
Jaquies Smith
You fellas better be ready to ball the f**k out!
Go Bucs!

As sad as it is to say, he was probably our last hope for someone to step up with a pash rush from DE. Other than Spence, who is more of a hybrid DE/LB, there’s no pash rush from the edge.

Is it true? This man really has no sack?
September 1st, 2017 at 10:47 am
That Justin Evans pick looks a little more suspect.

Again…I’m seeing a lot more 3-4 D this year or some hybrid. Smitty has some talent on this team but not enough at classic DE…he’s going to have to get creative to maximize folks like Noah and LVD.

Even the biggest GMC haters better be praying hard that the dude doesn’t miss time.
It’s obvious as f*ck how he effects the pass rush visibly lol. Not just what he’s doing individually but how it effects the entire line. I’d love to pay another $14 million a year if there was another Gerald we could sign next to him.
2018 draft = D-line youth injection.
r1 – Best available pass rushing DE or DT
r2 – same thing again (unless there is insane value at RB/CB/OT)
r3 – RB or CB (or DT/DE depending on first 2 rounds)
r4 – another DE
R5-R7 – OT/CB/RB
This may change after the season but it’s the only obvious hole in terms of youth.
-O-line is young / deep. Wester may be the RT of the future and in that case we are pretty set already for the next few years and can just keep drafting developmental late round dudes.
-QB/WR/TE good / deep
-at CB if we can extend Grimes for another year or 2 we are good imo. Ryan Smith = the X factor but with another year under his belt I’d think he’d be much improved and ready to take over soon. We are fine at nickle with Elliot / Jude. But the main thing is that we don’t need great CBs if our D-line can generate pressure without blitzing. But great CBs can’t cover for a terrible D-line that can’t pressure.
-LB good / deep
-S good enough – Evans athleticism = tons of potential if he puts it all together eventually. CB/S typically take like 2-3 years to get their sh1t right. We can get by regardless between Tandy/Conte/Wicox
D-line = everyone is 29-31 basically except for Spence. Ryan Russel / Jack Smith are dark horse shot in the dark pray to all gods they work out types

Speaking for Pablo
“Pablo won’t have George Hohnson to kick around any more….not to worry, Pablo still has Hack Smith……time for Hason to finally bring in a pass rusher.”

I’m with stpetebucsfan ..expect more 3-4. Our best pass rushers are our LBs and 2 undersized DEs (one still on the PUP list) and one DT #93

The great George Johnson! What GM would pay for this man’s disservices and trade a 5th round draft pick to boot?
Oh, yeah…
September 1st, 2017 at 12:04 pm
Good thing we have absolutely nobody on this roster that is a threat to rush passer from the edge. What’s the name of that guy that makes all the personel decisions again? No, no. I don’t mean the guy that makes all the decisions that work out, that’s the great Licht who as we all know can really do no wrong. The other guy who makes all the bad decisions?

Even after 2 years – we hardly knew ye George Johnson. Good Luck
September 1st, 2017 at 12:56 pm
No Joe, the Bucs traded for “sackless” George Johnson because Licht screwed up the RFA offer sheet and rather than having it go to arbitration they passed out a free 5th round pick (for a far more worthless 7th round) for Detroit’s trouble. Far from Licht’s worst move (see: Aguayo, Roberto), but not exactly a proud moment for any GM.

So glad he is gone. I never agreed with that trade, not from just before it happened forward. Horrible trade.

Marcus Jones had 13 sacks for the Bucs in 2000.
He lost his job to Simeon Rice the next year.
Point being you improve your team when possible – you go out and sign people even IF you think you’re already set a position if it’s a clear upgrade. Just think if we had Twitter back then – the fake outrage at replacing a young guy coming off a 13 sack season with a high priced vet that can’t stop the run…
September 1st, 2017 at 4:19 pm
Not drafting lineman will keep us at 9-7
September 1st, 2017 at 6:22 pm
Rod, Jones didn’t lose his job to Rice after 2000. Jones started 15 games in 2001.
September 1st, 2017 at 6:27 pm
Rod, Jones suffered a knee injury during the 2002 preseason, was put on IR and then eventually was released. He never played another game in the NFL. I guess it’s a good thing we signed that high priced vet who can’t stop the run.

I’m not panicking about the preseason pass rush.
I saw very few DL stunts. The starters didn’t play that much. The LB’s didn’t play many “games” on D.
The D was completely vanilla, top to bottom.
Back when the Bucs were sackmasters, many came late in the game when the OL gets sluggish and tired. That’s why a solid rotation on the DL is so important: get the sacks when they mean the most.
I suspect Smith has a bunch of cards up his sleeve…
Besides: I’d much rather have pressure disrupting the QB than sacks. Disruption = turnovers.
