Practicing with/against first team produced results.
Practicing regularly with The Franchise pays off.
In the last week of training camp, Bucs receiver Mike Evans was held out of practices for precautionary measures. He didn’t dress Saturday against the Browns.
So without Evans and DeSean Jackson, who also didn’t suit up for the regular season dress rehearsal, rookie wide receiver Chris Godwin became the de facto No. 1 receiver. And winning Bucs coach Dirk Koetter said Godwin played like a No. 1.
After the game, Godwin all but said, “Thank America.”
In short, practicing with the ones and having America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, throwing him the ball on a daily basis is a big reason why Godwin looked the part of a No. 1 receiver. Practicing against the first team defense didn’t hurt, either.
“It has definitely helped,” Godwin said of catching passes from Jameis. “Obviously, going against great competition and going against the ‘ones’ helped. It’s a challenge and I look forward to that challenge every single day and growing from my mistakes.”
Godwin was clear he’s still learning the ways of being a pro receiver.
“Obviously, the whole NFL thing is still really new for me. But I am excited about the challenge and excited about coming in to work everyday and just trying to figure out what adversity I am going to face that will pay off for me in the long run.”
While Koetter raved about Godwin, the rookie from Penn State told Joe he made mistakes.
Godwin also noted how Jameis took time last week to buoy Godwin’s confidence when practicing with the first-team offense.
“You guys know Jameis, he is a very charismatic, motivation guy,” Godwin said. “He is always talking about, and to the guys on the team, to get us ready to go. Giving us small tips. He’s got a big heart. He is very passionate about the game man, and that’s what we love about him. He’s going to be ready to go everyday.”

I would have loved to see CG have some catch and run opportunities to showcase his speed but the field and circumstance just didn’t permit it. Teams are going to be shocked when they do.

Empty back field – OJ and Brate on either side of the line – 3 WRs spread out – Evans, DJax and Godwin. All 5 run routes
How in God’s name will Defenses be able to stop that if the Oline can just give Jameis 3 seconds within a clean pocket? They won’t be able to.

Joe- couldnt agree more. The ONLY person on this team, that can rush the QB is Gerald McCoy. Without him, we are a .500 club

I try to hold low expectations for rookie receivers. This guy is impressing me though. Mainly because of the stories of his work ethic , that stuff matters. It helped him get that #1 role last nite. He wasn’t spectacular but looked very reliable out there. He has a great chance for success here in Tampa playing across from Mike.

Well the folks at BSPN aren’t buying into Jameis. They just came out with their “Top 100 players of 2017” and Jameis didn’t make the list while Dak Prescott did.
We had GMC at 34, ME at 49, and LVD at 84. AGAIN the leader in Tackles KA58 was left off the list as well as Jameis.

Obviously it is too early to grade the draft however after seeing our picks in action I sort of conclude that this has the makings of a solid draft that at the moment, I would give an A grade to. The biggest ding for me was reaching for Justin Evans when so much talent was left at that pick. I bet seeing how bad our pass rush has been that Licht wishes silently that he would have gone DE in the second rather than a Safety who is a poor tackler.
1. O.J Howard – I believe O.J will be everything that he was projected to be. This pick I would say was a no brainer considering his talent level at a very important position in our Offense. I do not see him busting. He will at the least be an above average TE if not Elite in his career.
2. J. Evans – Tell me why. I still just do not understand the thought process here. It is not as though he would beat out Tandy or Conte with him being a rookie who can not tackle and can’t learn how now due CBA rules in practice. Sorry but this was a poor decision.
3. C. Godwin – So far this guy appears to be the offensive steal of the draft. He and ME 13 should give us a solid WR corps even after D Jax moves on in the future.
3. K Beckwith – Another steal here and what an amazing fact that he has been able to get himself ready. This could end up being one of the best Bucs third round ever with Godwin and Beckwith.
5. J. McNichols – Looks like a late round talent who missed practice time due to injury and who has not studied the playbook. Perhaps he does study but just can’t grasp it.
7. Tu’ikolovatu – Honestly, I have not seen enough nor heard enough to really gauge his chances. I typically do not count on any 7th round pick to make the team but he could provide some back up beef to the DL. Pulling for him though.

Would this be the first training camp in his career that Evans got through healthy? I’m almost certain he’s had hammy issues every camp in the past

Rayjay….Why does Justin Evans have to be a starter in his rookie year for the pick to be a success? I’ve always been of the mindset to give a player 2-3 years before rating the draft choice.
It would be great if every high rounder would immediately be better then your starters but that just isn’t reaLlty.
There have been tons of players who had great careers who didn’t play much in there first season.
Think its waaaay too early to call it a poor decision.

GMC called into 620 this AM and told us he is ready to go and if this week was regular season he would be playing. I dont think he would say that unless the injury was minor. The mystery continues.

I tend to agree with Rayjay on this one regarding J. Evans. Not that every high round draft pick should have to start immediately but I am not sure he has the talent to have been drafted that high to begin with. Particularly where we are at running back right now. I think Doug is far and away the best running back on the team and he has proven to be extremely unreliable. We could have either his replacement or at least serious competition on the roster right now. Instead we have a second round safety who needs to learn how to tackle. But am nit picking here. With OJ, Godwin, and Beckwith it looks to be another really good draft by Licht! If Evans pans out, even better!
