The sage of Tampa Bay sports, eye-RAH! Kaufman, Tampa Bay’s only Pro Football Hall of Fame voter has spoken.
Starting as a New York Giants beat writer in 1979, Ira has seen it all. And his football wisdom tells him the Buccaneers should make a trade immediately if they can.
For those who don’t listen to Ira’s popular podcast twice per week with Joe, shame on you. It’s filled with Bucs goodies every Tuesday and Thursday.
In tomorrow’s episode, you’ll hear Ira say the Bucs would be wise to trade immediately with the Buffalo Bills to acquire 29-year-old stud running back LeSean McCoy.
On Friday, Evan Silva, senior editor of NBC property Rotoworld.com, Twittered to his 133,000 followers that he expects the rebuilding Bills to listen to trade offers for McCoy. Then, new Buffalo wide receiver Anquan Boldin surprised the NFL yesterday by retiring from the Bills, which had signed him for a major role in their offense after the team traded Sammy Watkins to the Rams.
The Bills have been stockpiling draft picks — six already in the first three rounds next season.
That was a hot topic on SiriusXM NFL Radio this morning, as was the potential trading of McCoy, who is on a Hall of Fame track after another monster season in 2016. McCoy averaged a whopping 5.4 yards per carry en route to 1,267 yards rushing and 13 touchdowns last year. And he added 50 receptions on just 57 targets.
During the taping of Tuesday’s podcast, Joe asked Ira if he thought the Bucs should trade for McCoy immediately to solve their running back situation, since it’s become clear the team believes it can win now. And Joe asked Ira if he would part with a second-round pick and Doug Martin or another running back for McCoy.
Ira said he would be all over it. You can hear Ira’s full explanation tomorrow.

Hey, if the Bucs are any good, then that second-rounder is nearly a third-rounder. Plus, McCoy could push the Bucs offense to historic heights, and the Tampa Bay running backs haven’t exactly turned heads this summer. Also, the Bucs could always draft a kicker late in the second round in another year, after Nick Folk hangs it up. They can do without next year’s second-rounder. No rush there.

I mean, Lesean McCoy is an excellent RB, but he is also 29 years old. So I would potentially be in favor of a low cost trade, perhaps a 3rd rounder and a back up player at most.
He would immediately improve our odds of going deep into the post season this year.

Well played Joes, well played. As any die-hard Buccaneer fan, when I read “McCoy trade” I immediately thought of Gerald, and was dumbstruck at the thought of losing our best defensive linemen (certain poster’s”opinions” notwithstanding).
But yes, I would be down with trading for LeSean McCoy, who continues to defy age and play dynamically even at 29, and can help in both the run and passing game.

I wouldn’t give up a draft pick for s 29 year old RB unless the team was aging and they were trying to go all-in on a super bowl run this season. The Bucs are headed in the right direction but they aren’t there yet.

It’s a nice thought, pairing McCoy and Djax together again. We don’t have a true break-away rusher who would be off to the races.
But the fact is, we have a pretty damn solid backfield that doesn’t need a dude of 29 years who is on his way out stealing touches.
Martin and/or Rodgers would be sacrificed in such a trade. No point in having multiple backs in their late 20s who would serve as the feature back with Shady being an obvious upgrade.
Sims, Barber, McNichols are all under the age of 25 and who I believe the Bucs are taking serious looks at being the feature back after this year, when Martin has no guaranteed coin. By signing McCoy you are saying wins here and now are more important than the development of who could be the Bucs #1 guy for the next five years or so.

Yeah i’m with you on Hill and Crowell, they are both solid, but i’m not sure they would be worth the cost it would take to acquire them.
I think are Back-ups will be solid enough as to not detract anything from our Offense in Doug’s absence. Barber and Simms have both been solid in preseason.
And considering how potent our Aerial assault is poised to be, and how dominant the interior of our O-line has looked, none of our Running backs are going to struggle to be productive this year.

Oh that McCoy. Well I’m really meh about that. I trust our braintrust to figure out what McCoy could bring to the Bucs. It would be nice to have a little speed in our backfield for a change. But Lesean ran a 4.45…Sims 4.48 is not that much slower…but our Boise backs can’t even break 4.5.
It would be nice to have a RB that doesn’t continually get hauled down from behind…but OTOH I hear the posters who are not for the deal.
Bottom line…I trust Licht and Koetter to make the call on this one.

Shady is a fantastic back, but the Bucs can not be so short sighted to give up a 2nd round pick for a 29 year old running back.
The Bucs have some big contracts(Kwon, Brate, Marpet, Winston, Smith, Evans) they are going to have to do within the next two years and 1-3 round picks are going to be essential for the Bucs to stay within the salary cap and have high level talent.

Agree with BucEmUp … we’ve got enough horses in the stable this year to put together a decent enough running game. Use our 2nd rounder next yr on a RB if the opportunity presents itself (DT, DE or CB in Rnd 1).

Joes & Ira need to check out the salary cap implications of a McCoy trade. No hit to the Bucs, but the Bills escalate over $7M from a signing bonus. After that, Martin’s base salary is $7M until 2020, while McCoy is just under $7M until 2019. No 2nd round pick is worth taking on that much cap hit by the Bills for Martin over McCoy.

I think doug will regain his form this year but we’ll see….dirk should call bill and ask him what carrot did he keep in front of l.blount in order for him to play so well and stay clear from the off the field issues….doug needs a carrot in front of him to keep him on track…..

Now, if you tell me we can flip Quizz and a 4th for McCoy I’d probably make that deal …
As-is, it wouldn’t surprise me to see a team like the Lions, Packers or Giants get McCoy for a 4th and 6th rounder or something like that … I think Joe is drastically over-valuing the market value of a 29 year old RB like Shady McCoy.

Yes would do it in an instant as Jameis’ success in the passing game is predicated (know it’s a cliche)on a solid run game. I do believe Barber is about to break out but signing McCoy would give him even more time to develop. Rodgers is a good third down back and filled in adequately as a part timer but for an entire season? I don’t have much faith in Martin. I’m not sure he’s mentally where he needs to be and Sims is really a third down specialist.

Joe always talks about 30 year old running backs as a risky proposition. This guy’s 29. And you’re willing to throw a 2nd round pick at him? I just don’t see it. Not gonna happen. And really, if they see all Martin’s quickness and burst back in TC, why would they trade for somebody else? Joe and the fantasy-roster builders are nuts.

I love shady in fantasy but hes often injured with soft tissue injuries and hes 29. Id rather gsme with what we have and save the draft pick for the longterm. Not to mention too high of a price tag. We have a lot of contracta coming up.

McCoy would be an immediate upgrade over ANY RB on the Bucs roster. If they could get him for a later pick and he’s not locked into some kind of long term high dollar contract, I would absolutely love to see him in Tampa for a year or two to give them time to find a new RB1.

It would be a dumb move for the Bucs to make; not going to happen. Sure, let’s trade an aging guy of 28 who all know–who his TEAM knows–despite his warts, for an even older guy who his on the back edge of his prime curve and has no time at camp with his team mates. Three months ago, maybe. Not now. Classic case of not looking at who a guy is and can be and instead focus on what he was. Quizz and Barber can carry the role for the first three games.

With McCoy at $9M per year for the next 3 years – I’d rather save the draft picks and re-sign Martin to a new $4M per year deal.
Just keep drafting a RB in rounds 3>5 each year until you hit on a really good one and make due with the decent talent we have for now. Martin – Quiizz – Sims Barber – McNichols – there’s talent there if the OLine will do their job well.

Sure, a 30-year-old RB is usually in his final season if he makes it that far. That written, McCoy has been on a Hall of Fame track, and he turned 29 a few weeks ago and he’s very much looked ageless. If you believe the Bucs are in a Super Bowl window, then it’s not a bad deal.–Joe

I say no. First off. If I’m not going to sign AP for nothing other than money, the strategy of giving up anything better than a 5th makes little sense to me. If I was willing to trade a second from next years draft, I’d have packaged that this year for Cook or Mixon.

And for the guys that want GMC traded, the only way that would happen is if the Bucs received multiple ones, like the Keyshawn Johhson trade. I would still be hesitant. GMC is the factor that causes our defense to go from good to great, when he plays at near his potential. GMC will have a monster season. Best of his career.

Depends on the cost – but to pretend those yards per carry numbers mean anything is ridiculous. The Bucs blocking last year was horrific as was the play calling. Dirk was terrible last year, he was ultra predictable and he never mixed it up – his playcalling in the preseason this year, at a time when you show nothing, is dramatically more diverse and creative than the entirety of last year.
McCoy is a very good back – and so is Doug Martin. You already have Doug Martin and he only costs the salary you pay him and you can cut him at any time for no cost. McCoy is a better pass receiver than Martin, but running wise they actually run a very similar style. You put McCoy in the Bucs offense last year and play call like Dirk did when Martin was in the game he’d have a 2.9yac as well. If Martin is back, and so far he looks back, then I don’t think McCoy is any particular upgrade and is actually older and has a lot more wear as well. The benefit for McCoy is him catching the ball better and knowing he’ll be there weeks 1-3, however at the same time he’d be learning a completely new offense so I’m not sure how effective he’d be. Rodgers was effective coming in off the street last year but it wasn’t a new offense, he played in the same offense in Atlanta.
So basically if you can get McCoy, who would probably play for 2 years, maybe 3 max, for a 2nd round pick do you do it? Humm…
I say YES. The extra pass catching ability of McCoy helps Winston and McCoy is more consistent. I do fear his wheels will fall off here very soon. One thing I wonder however is if Joe only wants to see this happen because he’s lead the run Martin out of town campaign and he’s about to look really dumb when he’s the starter.

I don’t think this would be a good business move. Why would you trade for a 29 y/o running back and give up a 2nd round pick? I mean, you’re going to have to replace that 29 y/o back at some point, so….why give up a second too? Straight up, maybe. If the team really thinks this is the year for a legit run. Otherwise, seems like a waste of resources, when it seems like renegotiating a deal with Doug would be more team friendly. However, this is why i’m not a GM, so…

The people against this potential trade must not be regular watchers of Lesean McCoy. The guy has literally never had a bad year. Never. For multiple coaches and schemes. He is pure superstar. If the Bucs are really all-in, then this is a no-brainer for what we all expect would be a late second-round pick.

Every once in a while I have a knee jerk reaction to an article on JBF that I wildly oppose then after a while I realize how much sense Joe and some of the posters make sense.
Regarding this one, I find myself going way, way, way far the other way. Martin, by all accounts that I’ve seen, has done everything that he can do to win back trust in all facets of the Bucs. He looks hungry again in the preseason and unbiased eyes must recognize he looks like the Bucs best back. Yes, he won’t be available for at least 3 games. Yes, McCoy looks to be the better back. But this isn’t a player for player suggestion. The idea of giving up Martin and a 2, thats just so much.
That 2 very well could be the RT that finishes the Oline for the next 5 years, or the CB that plays opposite Hargreaves. Or coupled with our first, maybe gives us enough ammo to draft Saquon Barkley.

I would not do it. No. I don’t believe trading away future draft picks is ever a good idea. This is a young team and mortgaging the future for soon to be 30 year old RB is simply a bad idea. Then you have the CAP, the salary CAP with multiple players coming up for second contracts. Evans, Winston, Alexander, Marpet, Smith come to mind. Better to sign your own good young players if you can. Jameis alone may command close to 30 million a year!
That’s my “vote.” Do not repeat the mistakes of the past.

Here’s the Bucs last trade for a 29-year old runningback… While the trade itself didn’t turn out well, it wasn’t terrible, other than you realize every mock draft I remember had the Bucs taking the RB out of Florida, Emmitt Smith, until this trade was completed. Instead the Bucs took Keith McCants since their RB need was fixed…
Buccaneers acquire Gary Anderson

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers Thursday reached tentative agreement with the San Diego Chargers to acquire veteran running back Gary Anderson, who sat out the 1989 season in a contract dispute.
Anderson, who turned 29 on Wednesday, starred three years with the Tampa Bay Bandits of the United States Football League and resides in Tampa.
He joined the Chargers in 1985 and rushed for 1,119 yards in 1988 — his last year in professional football.
The Buccaneers agreed to send third-round draft choices in 1990 and 1991 to San Diego, with the ’91 pick improved to a second-round selection if Anderson gains 1,000 or more yards from scrimmage this season.
The trade is contingent on Anderson signing with the Buccaneers by noon EDT on Saturday, one day before the NFL draft.
After finishing third in the AFC in rushing, Anderson and the Chargers could not reach a contract agreement before the 1989 season and the former Arkansas standout sat out the entire year. When Anderson expressed interest in playing for Tampa Bay, San Diego General Manager Bobby Beathard asked the Buccaneers for a No. 2 pick in the 1990 draft, which would be the 30th overall selection, and a fourth-round choice.
Tampa Bay Coach Ray Perkins instead countered by offering a pair of third-round selections and Beathard turned that proposal down Tuesday.
Anderson, who rushed for 2,731 yards in the USFL, is also a skilled receiver out of the backfield, catching 80 passes for the Chargers in 1986. He was selected by the Chargers with the 20th pick of the 1983 draft and joined San Diego after the Bandits released him from his USFL contract.

This is NOT an example of a well-reasoned analysis. I don’t care if you have Barry Sanders or Jim Brown back there, if your OL is mediocre (as ours is) it takes away your RBs potential.
We need talented and athletic OL way before we need RBs. Our backfield is solid as it is, and if Martin returns even 90% to form, this would be an above average RB corps. Unless you are talking about something like a 3rd draft pick and a backup player, then trading for Lesean McCoy is really a dumb idea.

This is best offensive line Bucs have had in a long time, at least since 2012 when Martin rushed for 1400 yds. In 2013-2014 Offensive line went south, mainly because management made mistake of getting rid of Zuttah and Penn and Nicks couldn’t play. In 2015, Bucs added Marpet, Smith and they had Mankins and what happened? Another 1400 yd season for Martin.
Granted, Martin was injured twice last year and had a substance issue, but it makes no sense that Bucs would trade him this close to regular season when he is looking strong and healthy, with a better offensive line, better tight end…
Shoulder injury plus bad o-line were reason for poor 2013-2014.
Several teams have already tried to trade for Martin. Bills would probably want a receiver. Sorry Joe, but Martin is going to be good this year

I don’t have a problem trading 2nd round picks, but it better be for a player on the upswing of his career, not a running back with maybe two good years left in him.

There’s a reason 55% of the votes in the poll here are in favor of exploring a McCoy trade. … 2nd round picks around the league have about a 65 percent bust rate. … McCoy is a superstar. You people want to play amateur GM, or you want to win a Super Bowl?

Here’s the reality we won’t keep every player we grow to love being a member of this team. If you lucky you a get chip while they’re in they’re rookie deals. Were it not for having members of they’re team poached away by other teams Seattle would still be the most dominant team in the league. To me you get a chip as quick as possible. That’s the greatest form of job security. Sometime you go all inn throw caution to the wind. Shady still a bad boy.

I voted no because I’d rather try to work out a trade for LeVeon Bell. Talk to Pittsburgh about a sign the tag-and trade deal. Give them Martin and a 2nd or 3rd and we have the most unstoppable offense in the league. Make it happen Licht!

Had we drafted Dalvin Cook we wouldn’t be in this position.
Instead, we got a very mediocre stable of backs with no one the defense needs to worry about. Including Martin.
But, looks like we got blocking icon 2.0.

It appears we may have a full time fullback on the roster. 22 should have handed the football to him after he scored cause without that block the muscle hamster would have been on his back looking up waiting for the Solar Eclispe! I say keep what we got and hopefully we can get some chemistry between Martin and a regular fullback!

Keep on hating, but know that you will be proven dead wrong. Dalvin Cook will be a bust, because he is not going to stay healthy. My money says that he is on IR before the end of the 2017-2018 season.
O.J. Howard has the potential go down in the history books as one of the best tight ends to ever do it. He is that ridiculously talented.

McCoy i too old to burn a 2nd round on him. But I wouldn’t mind if we trade Justin Evans. he looks terrible. Can’t tackle a sack of potatoes. Should have found a way to get Dalvin Cook in round 2 this year.

Yeah, I know, it’s remarkable how sameish they are. Good year followed mediocre to bad year, followed by good year, etc…
Bell is a very good player, but put Martin or McCoy in that same situation in Pittsburgh and they get the same numbers. Heck look at what a 98-year old backup RB Williams did there when Bell was out in 2015, he looked like the best RB in football.

No thanks…Shady seems as likely to miss games due to hamstring issues as Doug has been. I’d rather the Bucs roll with their current RB’s and save all the draft picks they can. Licht and Lovie/Dirk have hit on more draft picks than they’ve missed on, so I’m confident that trend will continue.

It’s been a while since i’ve visited JBF but did Joe hit his head with this is insane proposition of trading a younger cheaper RB AND a 2nd round pick for a 29 year old can’t stay healthy RB?! I don’t know if I’d trade Martin for McCoy straight up at this point even with all of Doug’s baggage. McCoy is done or on his way to being done; RB’s careers are are over at 30, espeically speed guys like McCoy with a long list of injuries. I could not be more ‘ANTI’ this trade if I wanted to, and I”m shocked Joe would even entertain this as a sane thought; let alone thinking throwing a high draft pick in the trade as well. Licht would be a sucker to listen to Joe/Ira’s overvaluing of McCoy/RB position. Super Bowl contenders don’t trade 2nd round picks for 12 million dollar broken old RBs.

It always astounds me when people that claim to have football savvy request or desire trades for players that are making major money on their contract. McCoy is making $8 million a season. That was his free market value. He’s worth nothing more, nothing less and then to project a team giving up a 2nd rounder to acquire him…. that doesn’t mesh with the free market system. He’s worth his contract point blank period end of discussion. He is already the 3rd highest paid RB in the league… NUMBER THREE! He’s worth his contract and nothing more. Now when intelligent GMs make trades for players that are simply worth their contracts, they offer either a late round draft pick or another player with a big bloated contract that they want to get rid of as well. It irks me that people push for fantasies that can only happen in Madden and fantasy football because they don’t understand the value of the contract.
If anything, the Bills might want to clear space and they trade McCoy for whatever they can get or they cut him…but no smart GM would trade anything of value for a player that is nearly at the max salary for the position… that being said, Mark Dominik would make that trade in an instant which only helps further illustrate my point.

per another website I do not normally read:
“The key number that inflates (McCoy’s) contract is the $13.125 million signing bonus McCoy has already received. For 2017 and the next two seasons, McCoy’s base salary is about $6.3 million per season.”
I would certainly do a trade. $6.3mm is very reasonable for a RB of McCoy’s ability. RB is the only question mark on this offense. Give the Bucs such a weapon to go along with all the other weapons we have and our potential is unlimited.

That is not totally accurate. Martin’s deal CAN be cancelled due to his suspension. It completely depends on cutting the Bucs a new deal and Martin agreeing to it. That new deal can be multi year, or a one year prove it deal (that is the way I would go). But on a one year prove it deal, Martin would be a FA after that (that would be fine with me based on his ups and downs).

I’m most worried about giving up the draft pick…Joe does make a good point though that if we’re as good as we think that’ll be more like a 3rd rounder.

First in a straight swap…McCoy for Martin there is NO comparison.
First stop with the age talk…they are BOTH older backs…same age…nearing the end of their careers…that’s why we should be hoping McWeapon is the real deal.
As for production and ability….it’s absurd to compare the Muscle Turtle to McCoy.
Doug’s total NFL yardage…4227…McCoy..more than DOUBLE! 8954
Doug’s average…4.2 McCoy’s 4.7 That’s a full half yard per carry.
Doug’s TD’s 23 McCoy almost three times as many with 60!
McCoy has multiple seasons taking it to the house from outside of 50…Muscle Turtle…TWO good season where he was continually hauled down from behind even after the Bucs got him into the open field.
I get the concern about draft picks….I think Harry defused any salary issues with his excellent post.
But puhleeze..Doug Martin cannot carry McCoy’s jock in terms of ability and production!!!!

Too bad the great Jason Licht didnt draft one of the better RBs that could have been had and are excelling right now and could have been picked in round 2-4, like dalvin cook, foreman, joe mixon, marlon mack, kareem hunt, samje perrine all are excelling for their new teams and are going to be a part of that teams offense in 2017….but licht got kendall beckwith..smh

They need a receiver, let’s trade them one. They can have Huff and a 4th rounder. I want to see us fleece another team in a trade for once, and that administration has no ties to McCoy + are in the middle of a rebuild.
