“I Don’t Understand Taking Notes Pregame”
July 5th, 2017Roberto Aguayo’s pregame antics almost had former Bucs kicker Martin Gramática pulling out his famous flowing brown locks.
That was the message from Gramatica today on WHBO-AM 1040.
It was enough to get Joe popping Rolaids like Pringles.
“I mean, looking back now on the season, you would have to think it would have had to have been a lot of pressure,” Gramatica said of Aguayo’s struggles during a chat with Rock Riley (Yes, that Rock Riley).
“I think that at times, you see him in the games and pre-games and he’s taking notes and writing stuff in a note pad. I think at one point it must have got to the point where he was overthinking it. I don’t understand taking notes pregame when the wind changes every two minutes at Raymond James [Stadium]. Or the weather changes here in Florida a lot. So I think that might have been a bit of the issue, just overthinking things and not being comfortable.
“And then you also have to adjust to a lot. The extra point rule definitely hurt a lot of the kickers, but especially the younger ones. You know, you don’t have that easy chip shot to kind of work on your game, or if you’re not feeling well or you’re not in rhythm you can kind of work on your steps with a short extra point. Now the extra point’s a field goal. So I think a lot of that had to be a part of the issue.”
Gramatica said he consistently texted Aguayo encouragement throughout last season but said he wasn’t going to offer advice or counseling unless he was asked.
Gramatica also added that his former Cowboys teammate Nick Folk “is a phenomenal kicker” and represents a clear message to Aguayo. “That’s not a camp leg,” Gramatica said of Folk and the guaranteed money in his contract.
If Aguayo does lose the 2017 kicking battle with Folk, perhaps he can make a few bucks auctioning his pregame note pad. Joe would pay to read that.

I think part of the reason we drafted him was the 33 yard xp was going into its 2nd year and it cost kickers, a coach, maybe a gm his job during the inaugural year. Plus the fact Jon Robinson was goin to draft him top of the 3rd round and licht shat the bed. Roberto the kicker has and will never get over the yips.

This reminds me of a golfer that spends thousands of dollars on new drivers and putters expecting a different result. It is not the stick or leg it is the head that is not allowing the proper execution. Aguayo head is in the way of him performing at the level he should…

I’m very surprised..like SUPER surprised that Aguayo hasn’t asked the G-Man for advise and help!!
Martin is willing!? And Aguayo hasn’t asked??!! That’s what I am reading!!

Best news in the article is what Martin Gramatica had to say about Nick Folk. No matter how this competition turns out, the Bucs should come out with a VERY good kicker. Whoever loses will probably be picked up pretty quickly by some other team I’d suspect.

In my opinion is this position is Folks to lose – we need a veteran at this spot…we took a shot getting him early and it failed last year…unless he drastically improves I feel much more comfortable with a veteran back there at the end of a game to win it

You dont think Licht would carry 2 kickers do you? I mean I could kind of see it. I just dont think the reward would be there.

I liked the pick… position selected (oddly)in the draft..but not the “player”
July 5th, 2017 at 11:35 pm
So let me get this straight; “Gramatica said he wasn’t going to offer advice or counseling unless he was asked”…And after last season or even during it, are we to understand based off this comment that Aguayo has NOT asked for either? R U F!@#ING Kidding? If not, then kick his millennial know it all ass to the curb already Jason Licht.
July 5th, 2017 at 11:37 pm
Yup! He’s done.
I liked the pick too, Lamarcus.
Life, The fact that he hasn’t asked for Martin’s help is both shocking and unacceptable.
Plus, the kid can’t hit beyond 50 (0/1) so he’s no good in the NFL. Koetter didn’t trust him beyond 45. Darn shame really.
Folk is money, coach should have 1 less thing to worry about.

Before we put Gramatica in the ring of honor using words like icon and beg for his input…let’s not forget that Lil’ Martin whiffed in Green Bay (2000 season I believe) which was the difference between at least a home game in the playoffs and instead a doomed trip to Philly. Fast forward to 2003 where he completely melted down. I suppose he could relate to Aguayo-no in that regard. LOL @ Gramatica Bros.

Yea I notice we are punting from our territory alot. Second round kicker at least have a cannon for a leg.
He is toast. Bust

I’d actually feel better if Aguayo-no reached out to Michael Husted ( doesn’t he run a kicking camp now ) or this board’s contributor Cobra ( Kai ) Boy. He seems to know a lot about kicking mechanics etc.

You heard it first on Joebucsfan! Dewey Selmon reports that Jon Robinson was going to take Roberto Aguayo at the top of the third round in 2016! Finally, after over a year of searching for this mystery team that Licht had to leapfrog over, a Joebucsfan message board poster who pays homage the worse Selmon brother has cracked the code! Thanks Dewey, I’m sure you have some inside information that NO ONE HAS EVER REPORTED about Jon Robinson’s infatuation with Roberto Aguayo and are just now breaking this news. God Bless your thorough investigation of this matter.
Douche.

You know, I have considered this as well. Normally, I would say no, but the Bucs have done it before for short periods. And really, in this case, it is the smart thing to do.
Consider this: What if Aguayo blows our socks off in Training Camp and preseason? Do you risk keeping him and not having a backup plan, just in case he cannot produce under real game pressure?
But at the same time, is it smart to release him under those circumstances?
That’s the best case scenario, and I can see the need to keep two even in that case.
And what if he performs about the same as Folk?
I think the Bucs have to keep two kickers this year. The 3 games Martin is suspended provides a cushion that everyone is assuming will go to a RB, but I can see it going to a kicker. That buys time to see if Aguayo can perform under pressure.

Grammatica is not the only veteran kicker he can reach out to…nor is he the best option.

I’d like to add…nothing in this story adds credibility to the belief that Agauyo will not succeed.

Tom S…this reminds me of what my favorite comedian of all time said once.
Bill Burr : “With the internet everyone has to be a prick when talking to each other, it’s never you were wrong about this and let me explain it why.” “It’s always you’re an absolute jackass for typing that.”
Not exact quote, but the dude is a borderline comical genius and he pushes the envelope further than most comics. YouTube Bill Burr and you WILL laugh your ass off. Controversial? Racial? Yup and he’s married to a “black power” woman, yet hates everything it stands for and he’s white. Bill Burr is great.
Go Bucs!

Can we stash Aguayo on the practice squad?
I don’t know the rules on that..
July 6th, 2017 at 12:37 pm
Bill Burr rocks.
Love his bit on how he’s scared to even say hi to kids these days.
July 6th, 2017 at 10:07 pm
While I appreciate a good Bill Burr reference, I just want to point out that if you type in ‘Jon Robinson Roberto Aguayo’, that the rumors of Jon’s infatuation with Roberto are so prevalent that this very article comes up 4th in that google search. The top two include articles where Robinson attended FSU’s pro day (Titans had the top pick at the time and were considering Jalen Ramsey) and Roberto’s CBS profile which does not reference Jon Robinson or the Titans in any way.
In fact I think if we keep saying those names together in the comments section we might be able to make JoeBucsfan the premier source on rumors of Jon Robinson’s love of Roberto Aguayo thanks to Dewey Selmon. Maybe there can become such a following of this bogus rumor that we can source it to Jon Robinson’s wikipedia page that he was heartbroken that Jason Licht jumped him for his dream kicker last year. It would be like Stephen Colbert’s Elephant prank of a decade ago and equally as accurate, like an Aguayo kick.
