Secret Teachings To Jameis
July 3rd, 2017The Tampa Bay Buccaneers didn’t just get a backup quarterback when they signed journeyman Ryan Fitzpatrick, they got a 34-year-old veteran of 116 NFL starts who could teach a thing or two to the franchise.
Of course, the franchise is America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston. And just before the Bucs went on vacation, Joe asked Jameis about how his bond with Fitzpatrick is evolving and what is being learned.
“It’s a great relationship. I learned a lot. Not a Rubik’s Cube yet, but just the way he processes and the way he sees things,” Jameis said. “You know, he’s helped me tremendously. He’s helped all of the quarterbacks in that quarterback room tremendously by the way that he sees things.”
Can you give one example? Joe asked Jameis.
“No I can’t,” Jameis said smiling.
Top secret stuff Jameis is learning. How bout that!
Joe doesn’t expect Fitzpatrick to spark a major improvement in Jameis’ game, but a good knowledge nugget passed on to Jameis every month or so could go a very long way.
Fitzpatrick spent several years around renowned offensive coordinator Chan Gailey, one of the few in NFL history to be a playcaller for a top-10 offense with three different teams. (Dirk Koetter also is on that short list) So Fitzpatrick surely soaked in at least a few fresh gems he can share with Jameis.
And Jameis absolutely craves every shred of an advantage he can find.

Can’t hurt and could be a great benefit. Welcome Fitz!

That’s what um talm bout Fitz. All hail 300..BUCS!!!

I just hope he has shared the secrets of, throwing it away not into double, or triple coverage. Make sure you are throwing it to our guy not the other teams guys. Mr. Fitz and Mr. Winston have issues with this “secret” as well as other NFL QB’s too. Hitting guys in stride not behind them or 2-3 feet over their head or to far out in front to make the catch. Real secrets that could help Mr. Winston, if he takes them and uses them.
Go Bucs!

@Joe what do you think of the possibility that Ryan Griffin outplays Fitz? Do you think one becomes trade bait? Obviously Griffin would have to put up huge numbers. The fact that he’s been with the team now for close to two years riding the bench and taking up a spot on the 53 shows that Koetter at least likes what the kids got, and I understand that Griffin being here this time was insurance for when Glennon leaves. Not that I have a gripe with Fitz, i just wonder which Fitz are we getting.
As of right now I believe it’s no competition between Fitz and Griffin, and in extremely limited playing time griffins done nothing to write home about. But I can’t help but wonder about the value placed on Griffins experience in the system given that he ate up a valuable roster spot for a couple of seasons. Thoughts?
July 3rd, 2017 at 2:36 pm
@Bradenton- That they brought in Fitz should tell you how they feel about Griffin. Fitz has valuable game experience that Griffin can’t even touch. Also, there’s no need to fret over “which” Fitz. If he’s starting, that means something bad has happened to Jameis. Frankly, which would you rather have if Jameis goes down? Griffin or Fitz? I’ll take the guy with the most experience.

If they carry two QBs then, their stated preference, they will lose Griffin.
July 3rd, 2017 at 3:02 pm
100% agreed but while we know Fitz can be serviceable we don’t know anything about Griffin. @Bucsfanman don’t you think it is a little odd for a team to carry 3 Qb’s for almost 2 years when most teams only carry two and stick the developmental guy on the Practic Squad. Too me That tells me the Bucs liked Griffin enough to not allow him to be picked up by any other squad while also wasting a roster spot on a guy that all the sudden made them tremble enough to go get a vet? Again, I 100% agree that experience is unreplaceable. And I am not one to question Jason Lichts personal decesions considering that he seems more then willing to cut his losses if it ain’t working. i am happy and grateful for meaningful competition for the backup spot. I just won’t assume he is garbage when the actions of our team have placed a decent amount of value in a man with no career starts

And by no means do I mean to disrespect your point of view or logic because I tend to believe actions speak louder then words. In lue of that statement though and without any concrete film to compare the two operating within Koetters system, it leaves me to wonder about what has changed. If we sign Fitz to steady the ship in case Jamies goes down, why did we not go after chase Daniel harder?

…as long as he doesn’t play a snap…I am great with him mentoring #3.
I learned so much more in my career from guys who had made a ton of mistakes….then the guys who didn’t…I like the pickup….can’t hurt unless #3 gets hurt…

The best thing about this signing is that we play the Bills, Jets, Dolphins and Pats this year all with the same coaching staffs as last year. Fitz played each of them twice and of course saw one of them everyday so this can only help in the preparation for all 4 of those games this year, including game # 1! In my opinion we should win AT LEAST 3 of those games which would go a long way towards our goal of winning the division.
July 3rd, 2017 at 3:19 pm
My fault Buffalo has a new staff, but that should be similar to what we know already due to their coach/scheme being from the Stinking Panthers.
July 3rd, 2017 at 3:22 pm
Bradenton- There’s no doubt that he has some value. I think it just comes down to what happens if the franchise (JW) goes down. Do you give the ball to a guy who has never played an NFL game or do you send out the grisly veteran. I think they’re thinking, “Absolutely, HAVE to WIN NOW!”
You’ve got a good point. Hey, if he can beat out Fitzy, I’m all for it!
July 3rd, 2017 at 3:23 pm
That is a great point too ndog
July 3rd, 2017 at 3:47 pm
I know its just for the 1 year at this point – but I feel better about the backup QB position with Fitz in there than I would have if Mike Glennon had come back with the Bucs for the $7M+ they were allegedly offering him. Fitz is a pretty big bargain at $3M IMO. He made $12M last year. Is not over the hill but has plenty of experience in this league. And has played well at times in his career whenever surrounded by a bit of talent.
July 3rd, 2017 at 4:39 pm
I just can’t see FITZ being better than COLIN as a backup!!!!
July 3rd, 2017 at 5:03 pm
Fits to Winston….Keep a professional profile….you’ll stay in the league for a long time. Act like a clown, you’ll be doing interviews in Canada bitter AF (Vince Young)
July 3rd, 2017 at 5:18 pm
Josh McCown with a beard! Don’t let’em fool ya fellers
July 3rd, 2017 at 6:02 pm
I doubt any tutoring done by Fitzy will make any difference on Sundays. It is up to #3 to improve. When the bullets are flying, there is no time to think…at that point it is all instinct and habit.
July 3rd, 2017 at 6:23 pm
Hey big log, look at their career stats! They’re very similar. Fitz has had good seasons too. More recently even.(whole season) On bad teams. But hey we all see YOUR agenda. Go Bucs!
July 3rd, 2017 at 6:57 pm
Should this be the other way around. Like Fitz learning frim jamies. A turnover prone young guy shouldn’t get tips from turnover prone old guy. Or I’m trippinh??
July 3rd, 2017 at 8:40 pm
BigHog
Colin only fits in certain offensive systems…the Bucs is not one of them. He does fit in Seattle and they sniffed and passed so that should tell you all you need to know. In the immortal words of #55, “if they want to keep you…they (owners) will find a way”.
July 3rd, 2017 at 9:03 pm
@ Mikadeemas…The only agenda I have is to get the best players available on the roster….Fitz would have to get a whole lot better to get to Colin’s level as a QB!!!! Fitz is not a play maker..just a run of the mill type that you hope never see’s the field until mop up duty!!!
July 3rd, 2017 at 9:13 pm
Colin’s only sin was to take a knee….and he has been BlackBalled for it…if you can see the truth…don’t be fooled!!!
July 3rd, 2017 at 10:45 pm
sounds like jameis just being nice
July 3rd, 2017 at 11:50 pm
Losing the Stickman QB and gaining Fitz was a win for the Bucs.
July 4th, 2017 at 9:40 am
@Bucs15 – Just what I was thinking… which is why he won’t give an example, lol
July 4th, 2017 at 11:02 am
fitz is just keeping the seat warm until Glennon returns after his failed mini vacation to chicago.

Winston gave no answer because he had no answer. That is to say, he is not learning much.
