Sifting Through Underwear Football
June 16th, 2017It is really hard to judge.
Even though both the Bucs and Joe have made it clear underwear football is not football (think high school seven-on-seven flag football leagues), fans still are hungry for information on pass rushing and blocking and linebackers tackling.
That’s impossible to judge honestly and fairly because there is no hitting. At all. None. And if there is, the NFL goes after teams with six-figure fines (or more).
So when winning Bucs coach Dirk Koetter was asked where his team stands after underwear football season, he sort of shrugged his shoulders.
“That’s always hard to judge because, a) you’re practicing in shorts and b) you’re going against yourself,” Koetter said. “So, we had specific things we wanted to work on in all areas [and] we definitely worked on them. It’s hard to judge how much better you got until you get against another team.
“Our guys are hungry, our guys want to do well. We’re on the right track but everything’s a process and you can only go as fast as you can go. We just can’t go much faster right now. We have to just wait it out and take a little break. These guys have to go their separate ways for a few weeks and then come back and we’ve got training camp, start building towards September 10th.”
Things we think we know: Chris Godwin appears to be able to hang with NFL defenses. Doug Martin appears quicker. DeSean Jackson is a ridiculous speed demon. The Bucs seem to have OK depth at corner or at least better than may have been believed. Brent Grimes does not look like he will turn 34 in a couple of weeks.
Then again, it’s what it appears. When the pads come on, we all will have a better idea what this team may be, both from fans’ perspective, and the Bucs themselves.

We will know what they really look like after the Miami game. But not until then.
