Well, it’s clear that rookie manbeast tight end O.J. Howard is one guy who won’t be uncomfortable when the Hard Knocks camera crews roll into Tampa.
Howard invited a multimedia crew from the Montgomery Advertiser into his private draft-night party in Prattville, Alabama.
It was a giant, formal bash at a Marriott property, but Howard had a more private room at the event to watch the draft flanked by his parents and closest friends, including Titans running back Derek Henry. Howard and Henry were roommates at the University of Alabama.
The cameras never left Howard, even as he was freefalling through the first round and landed with the Bucs at No. 19 overall. The tension captured was oh, so, real.

The young man is very much in control for a guy widely projected as a top-10 pick. Good sign.

I would love to see oj do that tho. I expect somewhere around 5-7 and 600 yards. No 1 or 2 round tight ends have had more than 627 yards receiving in their first year. But man that would be awesome to see him go off like that.

You guys should temper your expectations a bit. TE is one of the hardest transitions from college to pros.
I think he will be a straight stud in a few years, but not counting on massive stats his rookie season. I do however think his presence on the field will open things up for a lot of other guys as he’s learning the pro game.

I got into a debate with a panthers fan who said that mccafrey was a lot better player than oj and will be. He said that they took him because of need and bpa. That oj wasn’t the bpa at that time.

I’m having buyers remorse with Howard and here’s why:
The best TE might have 1000 yards and 10 TDs per season. Last yr 2 TEs had 1000 yards and we all know Brate led the group with 8 TDs.
Meanwhile an avg RB can have 1000 yards and 10+ TDs. Quick glance shows at least 12 RBs w 1000 yards last season and at least 8 RBs with 10+ TDs.
We should have drafted Cook as his position naturally lends itself to higher production.
Where am I wrong?

It’s well established that OJ is two players in one. The best inline blocker in quite some time according to pundits. And of course an underused weapon in the passing game. Add to that the new formations coach will be able to implement with 2 TE’s capable of receiving. And when we have a one TE set they won’t be able to guess it’s a run (Stocker) or pass (Brate). So many options open up. With McCaffrey (who I also like) we get basically the same thing we got with McNichols, albeit at a much cheaper price. Also RB’s, with few exceptions, have a much shorter shelf life. So barring injury OJ could be a very productive 10+ year player. I’m not sure I see that with McCaffrey.

I kinda like the fact expectations are high. I mean I was really high on ME when he was drafted and he proceeded to confirm my beliefs his rookie season. O.J. the new John Mackey has the tools and the fact that he’s saying the offense is similar to what they did at bama makes me feel like his impact will BIG the minute he steps on the field. Expectations should be high for a guy who was projected to be drafted in the top ten of the draft. Not many TEs step into an offense with vets like ME and Desean on the outside. Can’t see many LBs staying with him even as rookie next season.

Relax DB55. Our season is not dependent upon #80 needing some He-man type of season for us to win. He adds more fire power while truly becoming a All Pro TE… For crying out loud… Winston will terrorize the league for years to come

I personally am not overly concerned with his first year numbers. The threat he will pose day one is what I’m geeked about. He’s a power forward, safeties and corners too small for this physical specimen. LBs in most cases won’t enough athleticism to stay with him in coverage. Again when Koetter had Tony at the tail end of his career He was more the focal point of that offense than Julio was. Everything went thru Gonzalez. Fameis has a natural way of bonding with TEs, see Oleary at FSU Brate last season. I expect major chemistry between he and John I mean O.J.

My expectations for this team, this season, are very high.
But I’m realistic when it comes to a rookie TE. You can live in whatever fantasy world you want though, doesn’t make a difference to me.

DB… with OJ Howard you can take an average back and he becomes above average. No he won’t score 15 TDs or catch 1000 yards in passes but what he will do will allow so many more options to open. The LBS and Safety have to account for him. If it is a run they have to worry about play action, just a bit more. if they don’t he can hit the seam for 30. That will be an early game staple. Also, he’s such a good inline blocker he will be able to seal the edge. Against most 3/4 outside linebackers and some 4/3 DE He did this against Myles Garrett.
The other point is most RB’s last rarely to a second contract. Drafting a guy at 19 that literally should be a 10+ year starter is huge value.
Now all of this could turn on its head. He could be the next Luke Stocker (I HIGHLY DOUBT THIS) and Dalvin could be the next Chris Johnson (again, doubt it) but I love the pick. I am shocked he is a Buccaneer. Can’t go back and change anything, look for the positives and enjoy this ride. The next few years being a Buc fan could be very fun.

DB55… those stats you selected goes to show that very productive TEs are a lot harder to find than productive RBs. So if you had the choice of the only top notch TE, or the 4th or 5th best RB… I would always pick the TE. You proved that productive RBs are plentiful. TE talent is much harder to find.

The way I think about it is OJ is a generational talent. This guy could be better than Gronk
McCaffrey wasn’t even the best rb in the draft. He is a swiss army knife, sure, but what is he gonna do when he runs full steam into Kwon? CM is 5’11” 203
kwon is 6’1″ 227. Not to mention all the other backers in the league. Dude is not a wideout. He is not a between the tackles back. And it seems like he will get killed catching out the middle.
Good luck to them. I think they can make him work well in their system but give me the best te prospect in a decade over a weaker, smaller Charles sims.

McCaffrey would have been a great value at the top of the 2nd round…. that’s where his draft stock was. OJ was a clear top 10 talent.

Just to be clear I’m not referring to macafrrey or OJ specifically I’m referring to the positions themselves. I’m saying a slightly above avg RB produces more than a top level TE.
So if Cook rushes for 1000 and 12 TDs chances are OJ has 700 yards receiving and 5 TDs. And that would be great production for both of them.

@DB55 The thing that’s truly special about a complete package Tight End like O.J. is that it’s not just about the numbers they put up.
They can have a tremendous impact even when they dont have the ball in their hands. You can dictate coverage, and become extremely hard to predict based on personnel alone.
Not to mention theirs the issue of longevity. Great Tight ends can play for 10-15 years and still be impact players. Average career length for a running back is less than 3 years, and you’re lucky if a good one lasts 8-10 years.

Exactly. The qualities a dominant te possess are immeasurable. His blocking will never record on paper, but it’s that trait that can result in yards and touchdowns for another player. They are essentially a combo of an OL and WR.
You’re right in that an above average RB will most likely produce more than a top talent TE, but that again ignores blocking. Also, and my biggest point, I think we’re dealing with even better than a top talent TE. Potentially one of the goats. I don’t see CM being one of the goats at his position.
Koetter loves two-tight-end sets as well. Brate and OJ > Stewart and MccAfrey

O.J. is an ADDITION to the offensive team…
he is not expected to carry
a heavy load alone. He has two more proven veteran receivers and a partner in Brate…if he never scores his presence alone will be an assist to Jameis…and we still have Chris as back-up and whichever RB is in the game. No ONE player should have to carry a heavy load…alone
Moral of this story the Bucs in 2017 have WEAPONS for JAMEIS…let the games begin.

Those top RB’s their performance is dependent on allot of things. O-Line, QB/WR performance ect.
It is clear that Dirk wants to play out of the two tight end set. Once perfected by the Bucs offensive players it can be devastating and very difficult for defenses to cover.
Who do they double?
Are we going to run or pass?
Can Jameis figure out quickly what the defense is trying to do and know the proper response and get the ball to the right guy? This will be his 3rd NFL season and if he is as football smart as advertised, this should be the season where he really breaks out.

OJ Howard was the best and most impactful player we could have possibly hoped to come away from this draft with. At least 10 teams in front of us are ALL going to be sorry they passed on Howard. Jon Robinson and the Titans especially!

You guys don’t like OJ because he is a TE and not a RB? That’s ridiculous especially considering the kind of offense we run. It’s been quite obvisous to me that our offense is basically centered around the TE.
Just look at Brates numbers and if you think any other team is going to get that type of production from the TE your crazy. And look at the last time we had an athletic and big sized TE(ASJ) that was able to exploit the middle of the field. Jenkins did more harm then producing on the field but the plays works and the are proof that the TE can make critical plays for us when need them……..the RB is not a main Target on critical plays like the TE is.
Now look at our running game and our most impactful plays come when some combination of Marpet/Smith/Pamphile are able to break from the LOS and get to the second level. If OJ can block like he did in Alabama he will be a huge asset when we are blocking in that 2nd level. He can wind up be a massive headache for the opposing coordinators. Not a chance you can say the same for a RB if you talking about blocking.
I don’t think its fair to only look at production numbers. IMO blocking is much more important. I could argue that OJ was just for his blocking and his pass catch is just icing.

I’m a off the wall thinker so this might not jibe with y’all but I don’t think John Robinson passing on O.J. was by chance. I honestly feel like he threw Licht a bone. Remember Robinson was apart of the staff that scouted asj, he knows how much faith they were placing in asj only to be let down. It makes no since to have passed on O.J. He would’ve worked wonders for that QB over there.

I can’t totally rule out what Kobe is saying about Koetter in Jax,but our personnel is different. When asked about the offense before 2015 ME said “look at Atlanta’s offense that’s what it will look like”. So I’m thinking more along the lines of Koetter in Atlanta when he had Tony Gonzalez. I would describe that as a balance offense.

I rarely see the Titans so I don’t know the offense. But a lot of teams don’t utilize the position that much. Plus I think they have a pretty good TE and may of had more need in other positions. Lots of reasons why TEs drop in the draft more often then other positions.

Nos they’ve come flat out and said that we are going to be running a lot of 2 TE and even some Triple TE sets.
Yes there will be 3 wide used too. And some 2 Back sets. But the goal is to become a versatile, unpredictable, explosive 2 tight end offense.

I’m not expecting a big year for OJ in his first season, what I’m most exited about is the formations we can put on the field. Imagine us in a 3 TE set on first down and run the ball. We run the ball again on 2nd down and then go hurry-up and throw on 3rd down. We go hurry up from there so the D can’t sub. I just imaging the miss-matches. ME, DJax and 3TE! You can’t see what’s coming! I love it!

Hopefully OJ can help us get over our two year stinkfest in 3rd & 1. Like to see us have a thicker package for them downs. They can use that 360 pound kid they drafted in the 7th round…..heck, throw Ayers out there too. He sounds pretty angry lately and could be useful in a dogfight for one yard.

Do NOT fall into the trap of judging OJ based on what “stats” he puts up … Ali Marpet has 0 yards an 0 TD’s since joining the team and he’s a heck of a lot better and more important to the team than Brate is.
Simply having OJ on the field will help both the running game and Evans and Jackson as it will not tip the team’s hand as to whether we are running or passing.
I don’t expect more than 500-700 yards and 4-8 TD’s from OJ and that is fine by me. The guy has HOF potential an can be a difference maker just by being on the field …

Even with all the talent the Bucs have right now, it’ll still come down to playing solid fundamental football. Obviously every OC wants to put as many points on the board as possible, but in the process every one of them would love to hold the ball (TOP) for 60 mins if possible … best defense there is. Looks to me like the Bucs have the weapons to strike swiftly (DJax? ME13? OJ? Brate? etc) and will probably go that route when the situations allow, but will probably use the deep ball selectively IMO. Tend to think that Koetter will still heavily favor rushing & short passing to control the clock (also plays to the strength of our OLine & RBs especially).
Last year the Bucs, with all the injuries we had, still averaged just a tad less than 31 mins TOP (8th best in the NFL). If I had to guess, I’d say that this year’s Bucs will average 33-34 mins TOP (top 3 in the NFL), and that rushing will comprise about 40-45% of the plays. Please excuse me for excessive dorkiness but I used to play a football board game called Stratomatic football. Unless it’s third and long or a team is out of time, hands down the hardest offensive formation to defend is the 2TE, 2WR, 1RB set. You really don’t know if your opponent is going to run or pass. If you guess wrong there can, and occasionally will be, dire consequences for a defense. The addition of Howard, assuming he and Brate both stay healthy bodes well for the Bucs’ rushing and passing attacks. When defenses guess wrong, there will be times when our guys will find themselves with huge holes to run through in the run game, and wide swathes of open grass in the passing game, i.e, the explosive plays Koetter longs for. Go Bucs!

I believe OJ will be our TE of the future (aka Gronk to Patriots, Olsen to Panthers, etc). Since we see Olsen twice every season, and we know how we let him absolutely rip our defense to shreds, won’t it be nice to know we’ll finally have that going for us?

My only question about the two TE set is will Koetter be using it in certain packages or will that become the basis of the offense??? When the pats used that with Gronk and Hernandez that was they’re offensive scheme, it wasn’t used as just a here and there package thing. Now if Koetter has done that at some point in his career cool, but that wasn’t what he did when he was OCing in atl.

OJ Howard is the best TE to be drafted in the past decade. Howards size and speed is what sets him apart. He ran a 1.61 10 yard split at the combine. Howard has the ability to be a matchup issue with every NFL team. When you watch the film on him what I noticed is how open he is on every play. Howard could wind up being an 80 catch, 1,000 yard and eight touchdown type of tight end every year. Just imagine how a secondary is going to cover Howard, Mike Evans, Desean Jackson and Cameron Brate in a two TE set? It is going to be fun to watch.

You’re right DB55, that is a huge difference. Went back & added up TOP for each game to double-check (http://www.pro-football-reference.com/teams/tam/2016.htm) and came up with 30:57 average for the 2016 season as opposed to the 30:48 average that TeamRankings came up with or the 29:17 that YahooSports came up with. TeamRankings 30:48 may be right IF they don’t include the additional time from overtime games. No idea how they treat those games.
It’s interesting to see how TOP reflects Won-Loss record. In 2016, Bucs won the TOP battle in 7 of our 9 wins (we won the first & last games even though TOP was 27:36 for both). We only won the TOP battle in 2 of our 7 losses (and one of those … against the Rams … we clearly should’ve won IMO). During our 5-game win streak, our TOP average was 34:12 … our offense dominated.

I really don’t think Robinson was going to draft OJ at all. They desperately needed a CB and Adoree was one of the best in the draft. Plus they have Walker for a few more years.
Either way, yes I’m going to say it, OJ is my favorite draft pick since Sapp. Jameis is the best one but OJ is my favorite.

Guys, Howard will contribute in ways that may not result in his actually scoring touchdowns. If he can open a hole with a block or occupy a defender, he is still valuable. I dont care if he dosen’t score 10 TD’s. He is our guy and I’m rolling with it.
