Saturday columnist Gil Arcia dives into the Bucs’ pass rush.

The Buccaneers’ pass rush has not gotten its act together in quite some time. When you think about it, it makes you appreciate the Monte Kiffin days that much more.
It may not be fair to compare, considering Kiffin had Sapp, Brooks, Rice, Lynch, Booger, Ronde, and so on to work with. But the fact is the 11 guys on the defensive side of the ball have to perform every season no matter what name is stitched on their backs.
That’s why when Tampa Bay defensive end Robert Ayers said this past week that he feels Noah Spence can be a 15-sack guy, it felt genuine and exciting.
Spence can undoubtedly be that guy. But let’s just get into the backfield first. Tampa Bay’s pass rush was one of the worst in the league in quarterback pressure.
Via SportingCharts.com, Philadelphia’s defensive end Brandon Graham had registered 40 quarterback hurries in 2016. Giants DE Olivier Vernon was just behind him with 37. They ranked first and second, respectively. A Buccaneer doesn’t appear on the list until No. 33 with Gerald McCoy’s 19 hurries.
If you want to compare defensive tackles, Bengals’ Geno Atkins had 36 while Rams’ Aaron Donald had 31 and were third and fourth overall.
As a team, the Bucs were third to last in the league with 76.
Let’s take it a bit deeper (no pun intended). The Bucs’ secondary did a lot to make up for a lack of a rush. They were fifth in the league in passes broken up with 87, and tied for second with 17 interceptions as a team. The 87 passes defended is the most they’ve had in the past nine seasons.
Oh what could have been — if they had only gotten to the quarterback more.
From Ayers to Spence and everyone else in between, the Buccaneers need to do a better job up front. Not only from a statistical standpoint, but that would relieve pressure from the secondary.
Heck, it may even add a couple extra wins and a playoff berth.

You have to hope that the extra “weight” on the line will help the pass rushers not wear down by 3rd down. Our Dline has always been light. This extra “meat” in Baker and Stevie T will allow a fresh 3rd down substitution with pass rushers.

Bengals’ Geno Atkins had 36 pressures while McCoy had 19. So for all you “McCoy needs a great DE to produce” guys I ask you what great DE does Atkins play with? Michael Ghost Johnson? This is proof excuses excuses excuses!

When Spence and Bosa first arrived at Ohio State most of Columbus believed that Spence was the better player and a guy who could become great. Bosa is very good but I do not believe he’ll keep up with Spence.
Spence is the player most likely to blowup this year. But we have a lot of young guys who can continue to improve…Kwon is going to be even better…again how many of the other guys have career years? If Baker and Ayers both had their best seasons and GMC and LVD do as well…this defense could be special.
If Smitty has both LVD and Noah coming off the edges at times that could be scary. Mix in VHG in a Ronde Barber blitzing role on occasion…..I think we can get pressure this year!

IMHO, the sun should be setting on McCoy. I think the Bucs front office should plan on finding his replacement after this season.
I am hoping that a combination of it being Jameis 3rd year and the weapons he has now should allow the Bucs to light up the scoreboard forcing opposing offenses into a one dimensional attack allowing our defense to pin their ears back and attack the QB.
OK, done daydreaming.
Gil is right, the secondary is in decent shape, the LB corp is in decent shape, but the D-Line is the question mark. Is Ayers blowing sunshine up our keisters or do we have a diamond in the rough with Spence? We shall find out in four months or so.

Awesome analysis Joe. Agree wholeheartedly that the Bucs ‘need to do a better job up front’ and I think with Baker now onboard … and hopefully McDonald healthy … the DTs will get more pressure in the middle & force the QBs to move right into the waiting arms of the DEs.
Another thing that might tie in also is stopping the run. Selling out to get pressure on the QBs might hurt us somewhat against the run. Philly & Giants ranked 12th & 10th respectively against the run last year, so maybe it’s not that big a factor. Hard to say. Bottom line on defense IMO though is that it all starts with the DLine. Any QB in the NFL will pick us apart if given enough time.

Just read somewhere else that NS57 lost 10 pounds to get even faster!!! Stats were a little skewed last year due to the very high powered offenses they faced int the first half of the season and all the injuries on the D-line!!!
I am not as worried as some about the “pass rush”!!! It will look and be a point of deference this year!!! Injuries are always a concern due to the history and old age of some of the D-line!!!! But I have full confidence in D-Coach Smitty to get the most out of them!!!!! He is already pumping up the former “face of the franchise” GMC93 back to his peak performance!!!!!

I do not get why DE (or DL in general) did not get more attention in the draft. Why, as an example, did we move up in the 3rd rd to draft an injured player for a part time position (strong side LB)??? I love Licht, but I wish he would stop doing his annual one crazy draft move (Sims, when we needed OL, ASJ, AG).

This is a good point, but I am going in the opposite direction with it. As a team in the NFC South, the Bucs are going to always face “high powered” offenses. And in addition to the usual ATL, NO and SC, this year we can add the Giants, NE, AZ and Packers. Its great we will have an offense that has a chance to keep up and is exciting to watch. But with little pressure on Rodgers, Brady, Manning, Ryan, Brees, etc, we can get left behind in a hurry.

Yes Blake but Robert Ayers is pretty good and Clinton McDonald won a super bowl so you could say he’s good, and McCoy with the exact same player on M Johnson. Its old and for goodness sake he just said it himself that he needs to do more. He is not here to be good, he was the number 3 pick in the entire draft that player is supposed to be GREAT!

And if you have good pass coverage, the QB tends to hold the ball longer. In 1999 we had Donnie Abraham, Ronde Barber and Brian Kelley at CB, 3 excellent cover CBs. Derrick Brooks, Hardy Nickerson, Shelton Quarles, 3 excellent LBs in coverage. Damien Robinson and John Lynch at Safety, again excellent cover guys. In 1999 we were 2nd in pass defense, we gave up 2873 yards. Last season we gave up 4012 yards passing. In 2015 we gave up 3840 yards. In 2014 we gave up 4084 yards. In 2013 we gave up 3806 passing yards. In 2012 we gave up 4758 passing yards. In 2011 we gave up 3814 passing yards. Just a few stats from the stat guy. It takes 11 players on a defensive unit to make it function correctly.

There’s no excuse for a Secondary to give up 4012 passing yards. Pressures or no pressures, you just don’t give up that much passing yards. Especially to Bums QBs .

One thing most people don’t realize is that Gerald McCoy is the only Pro Bowl DT that has NEVER played with another Pro Bowler on the line. 7 seasons and not one. Look it up if you don’t believe me. Of course Bennett ended up becoming one, but Schiano got rid of him before he hit his prime.

Asking a rookie de to perform is a waste of breath or clicks on a keyboard. Now that he’s healthy, a full year in, I expect he’ll get 8 or 9 (since he’s not going to be a full time player) and given that he’s not ful time, if Gholston picks up 3-4 subbing in for him? There’s your 10+… Smh

How can you pressure the QB, when you rush 4 players and drop 7 in coverage. Most of the time you have 6 blocking 4. And you still have guys running around wide open. No defender within 5 yards of them.

This gets better and better. Robert Ayers was hurt the entire year! The couple good games he had were also conveniently great games for McCoy. If you didn’t know, McDonald isn’t a DE, he’s a NT, and he was hurt a lot of the year too. I’m also not sure what him winning a Super Bowl has to do with anything, but whatever. You are literally proving us right, so I hope you keep it up.

We are still a couple of years from this team being a consistent contender, the type of team expected to be in the playoffs, last year offense was a major problem, next year it’s going to be defensive line and cornerback that needs attention early in the draft and free agency, Spence and Gholston are the only proven guys under 28

This is SportingCharts definition of a QB hurry: A quarterback hurry is counted when a defender either forces a quarterback out of the pocket or pressures the throw. It doesn’t necessarily mean that the defender actually forced the quarterback to make a bad throw. Hurries are often a good indicator of a team’s pass rush. Just because a player is not getting sacks, it does not mean he is not a good pass rusher, because hurrying the quarterback into a poor decision can be just as effective.
My question is, how can you get QB hurries when teams are picking your secondary apart with timing routes?

What Realist!!! said @ Gil. As for Spawn I was already a believer but I became an even bigger believer when he went up against Tyrin Smith in the dallas game. Smith one of the if not best LT in football. Spawn was flying round his @$$ so fast. He was using every UFC rear neckid choke to contain him. It was then in my mind was like this kid gone be special. Didn’t record a sack but he was causing fits in that one on one matchup.

We haven’t had a ‘stable’ secondary in 10 years. We haven’t made the playoffs in 10 years. When DBs leave us, they disappear, no one want them. The few that’s still in the league are sitting on someone bench.

LakeLandBuc, comparing our 1999 team with more recent teams like you did really got me thinking (never a good thing … it hurts & I waste a lot of time). Went back on pro-football-reference.com and looked at how our 1999, 2000, 2001 & 2002 teams compared from a defensive standpoint (as we all know, our 2002 team was the classic because we gave up less than 200 pts and ranked #1).
If you look at just DLine performance, you can see clearly how each year it took 2 DLinemen to really make things happen. In 1999, we ranked #3 defensively … Marcus Jones (7 sacks) & Warren Sapp (12.5 sacks) set the pace. In 2000, we ranked #7 defensively … again Jones (13 sacks) & Sapp (16.5 sacks) set the pace. In 2001, we ranked #8 defensively … Simeon Rice (11 sacks) & Sapp (6 sacks) set the pace. And in 2002, our SB year, we ranked #1 defensively … Rice (15.5 sacks) & Sapp (7.5 sacks) set the pace. During that span the Bucs averaged 46 sacks per yr.
Interestingly, during those 4 yrs the DLine as a unit had 148 of the team’s 183 total sacks (81%). Last season our DLine had 28 of the team’s total 38 sacks (74%) & no one came close to the double-digits we saw back in the 1999-2002 span. One way to look at it is that Bucs need a beastly DE who can put up double-digit sacks like Jones & Rice did back then.

We need to focus on our dine next draft as the only possible great player on our dline is Spence and the jury is clearly still out on him.McCoy can be a good number 3 d lineman but that’s about it as he is not a temperature setter.

I think we’ll be okay in this department next season. The main reason is I strongly believe we’ll be playing alot of football with the lead next season. Thusly forcing teams into more passing situations. A few of our guys catch there fair share of flack but if I see flashes then I feel confident in the fact a player is capable of doing something on the field. Swaggy Siliga and Tui make it harder to run on us next season. I saw Jac get after people when healthy I saw Spawn as rookie with a bad shoulder get after people I saw Ayers when the ankle wasn’t an issue get after people. The pre season doesn’t count but we were eating QB’s last pres season. Once the communication became clear for strecth late last season we were eating QB’s. Could another one be added sure, but this off season was about getting Fameis more ammo. Did that. Thank Gawd. We coming bros. We coming.

Again tell us why McCoy quoted people that he repects said the exact same thing as me, but apparently they are all “clowns and fools” as well. You the difference between me and you is actually watch every play of every game (8 times a year live) so I see the plays he takes off, I see the 4th quarters he plays patty cake with a guard 1 on 1. But see you choose to ignore that and say he made the pro bowl or he voted a top 100 player. I don’t care about that crap. I watch Donald take over games, I watched Sapp take over games I watched John Randle take over games, heck I’ve watched Suh take over games but McCoy never takes over games and HE WAS THE #3 OVERALL PICK. Has some freaking higher expectations.

I guess you didn’t hear what Mike Smith said about his alleged 4th quarter struggles. Then again, research is clearly not your thing. Aside from Jameis, no one on this team has a better work ethic than McCoy. There have been too many people on the team and in the organization that have said so to argue against it. Yet people question how much he cares? Lol. I guess they want him to beat up children after a loss. I’ve seen him and Jameis sign autographs for 45 minutes after a loss. I guess neither cares as much as us. Smh

The very same metric, pass hurries, that you are trying to use to prove that Geno Atkins is so much better to McCoy, shows flat out that Carlos Dunlap was the *8th* best player in that category with 29 pass hurries to go with his 8.5 sacks on the year.
Geno Atkins was 3rd with 36 hurries. Gmc 34th with 19. The next 2 Bucs on the list, Noah Spence and Rob Ayers were numbers 87 and 89 with 12 a piece. And both guys dealt with injuries.

That is why I’m optimistic about next season. Smitty said this time last year they were at 2 + 2. He said this year they are at calculus. I really think if we give it a little patience we’ll all be somewhat happy with the results.

What did he expect!!!!! Between the injuries and the installing of the new scheme with brand new Defensive Coordinator, what did he expect??? From what this defense was in 2015 to what it became in 2016, what did he expect??? Because it sounds like he expected the D-line to look like the 1999 bucs???? Because no defense will be good to some if it is not the Tampa2 front 4 dominate that everyone saw!!!!!
Well I have a good feeling the defense will just be fine, (and it won’t look like the Tampa2 sheep)!!!!!!!!! And when you look at this team, does it now look like a defense first, hold them to 2 scores while the offense punts????

I am hopeful that Spence will make a Vic Beasley like leap in year two. Keyword hopeful. Because defensive end has been so devoid of talent the past twelve years its hard for me to get truly excited about anyone that plays the position until I “see it”.
Seriously if you look at the roster the last twelve years, off the top of my head I dont think we’ve had less talent at any one position than defensive end.

There is no doubt the DL has to improve as does about every aspect of this team, the question is are the right players here for the scheme and can they make that improvement. Having Smith back for another year, IMHO, is huge. I don’t expect the line to be dominant but I think it can be good.

No effective speed rush from the right end since DE Simeon Rice? Patience is virtue. Complete the LSU trilogy – ILB Kwon Alexander, OLB Kendell Beckwith, And 2018 RDE edge rusher Arden Key – the next Aldon Smith without the booze. Problem solved!

The Bucs made no effort to sign Olivier Vernon last season and it made no sense. The guy is still young, hasn’t hit his prime yet – and sure he’s expensive, but his salary is what the Bucs are paying Ayers, George Johnson and Gholston combined. Which would rather have?
