Indirectly outs the PFF tribe.
The well-trained orangutans over at the PFF tribe have been out to get Bucs left tackle Donovan Smith since the day Tampa Bay drafted him.
And just like Joe learned in high school, you can twist numbers all sorts of ways to prove a point, or worse, drum up a false narrative.
Way too many Bucs fans refuse to listen to Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht or winning Bucs coach Dirk Koetter when they stick up for the offensive line.
“No, no, no!” many Bucs fans holler, “Quarterback hits!”
Yes, America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, took a lot of quarterback hits last year — and the year before. This, fans are convinced, demonstrates that the PFF tribe is right and the Bucs can’t block up front.
Hold up! Licht strongly suggested fans wanting to add two-and-two to come up with four are actually coming up with six. Rather than blame line in a roundabout way, Licht believes fans should look at another position group on offense as the culprit.
Appearing on “Schein on Sports” last week, hosted by popular sports television and radio personality Adam Schein, heard exclusively on SiriusXM Radio, Licht fingered the lousy receivers (sans Mike Evans and Cameron Brate) for Jameis getting drilled, not the offensive line.
“Speed was one issue we felt we had,” Licht told Schein in discussing the 2017 draft. “It caused other issues with our offense. Part of the reason Jameis had to hang around in the pocket so much is that defenses would double-down on Mike Evans. If Cam Brate wasn’t open, then [Jameis] was scanning the field where he was taking too many hits.
“We feel that the addition of DeSean is going to cause some problems when you [also] throw Cam and O.J. [Howard] in there and some of the other weapons we have, we feel it is going to be much, much improved.”
See? The receiver schlock after Evans and Brate couldn’t get open, and that forced Jameis to sit in the pocket longer giving rushers a precious extra second or two to drill him.
And folks wonder why Joe threw beer bottles at TVs for the better part of two years begging the Bucs to upgrade the depth at receiver?
Frankly, Joe would much rather listen to a successful NFL general manager than a guy holed up in his Irish dorm room working part-time for beer money.

yes joe i feel like i’m one of the only ones that understands this! there was a reason jameis was holding onto the ball for so long! if there was somewhere to throw it he would throw it! i would like to know how many of those hits jameis took were after he had already rolled out the pocket or had been scanning the field for 5+ seconds because usually they say 3 seconds and the ball should be out. if jameis was mostly taking hits after scanning the field for awhile and trying to extend plays that means the offensive line actually did really well and all the blame goes on the guys who can’t get open

All one has to do is look at the Yac stats!!!!!! Then you will see that these weapons are not really getting open and when they do catch they are tackled immediately!!!!! The Bucs are very near the bottom of team YAC!!!!

Smith gets crap from fans and deservedly so for leading the league in penalties
James can reduce the hits with quicker decision making and cleaning up his mechanics. WR’s will help but it’s all about Jameis improving to reduce the hits.
Koetter can help with shortening up the route tree as well

I don’t think the line is as bad as some think!!!!!! Could it use some parts, sure!!! But the offense needs balance!!! If the main way you move the ball is for ME13 with 4-6 seconds to do a double move, then the offense is pretty predictable. If we can find Receiving option 2-5 to get some yac and be threats for “explosive” plays you can wear out some defense, I actual run game will suck in the back 7 as well!!!! Bucs had almost no RB and TE this year that chip blocked and helped the Tackles!!!!!!
I expect the offense to look pretty different in 2017!!!!!

Speed kills. If Oline has problems with all these weapons for Winston this year then yes the line needs some assistance. hope marpet becomes best center in NFL. He transitioned from tackle to guard pretty nicely so center should not be a big deal

From the little bit of film I saw of Godwin in the mini-camp, it looks like he has extremely sharp moves to get open quickly for short passes. Maybe he will be a weapon as well.

I agree that this was PART of the problem just like the struggling line, QB inconsistency, and RB issues. Adding weapons will certainly help.

With as much as folks complain about the O line play last season I recall on so many occasions Fameis standing back there patting the ball patting the patting the ball and patting the ball some more. Gose without saying we didn’t have the talent alot Sundays for people to get open. My-o-my have times changed.

Effient short passing attack similar to sean paytons playbook will do wonders for koetters vertical deep routes
Football is a chess match and calling short patterns is the new nfl normal
It creates less blitzing and loosens the deep coverage. Putting rac playmakers in open space is the new modern offense. Explosive plays against weak pass coverage. High probable and efficient

@bucNation- I agree about the route tree, but Jameis needs to continue to improve as well. No player is without flaw. He left some plays out there. The combination of adding weapons and continued work should bode well for this offense.

You might wanna re watch some film before you throw out insults. Jameis had 2-3 throws per game almost where he was so focused on 1 wr he missed the open underneath guy that’s where decision making comes into play. See the Carolina MNF game for a prime example of this. Threw a INT forcing it to Evans rather than hit the open underneath throw.
Koetter and everyone saw how inaccurate Jameis was throwing downfield 26% completion rate doesn’t lie. If you see it’s the qb or wr’s making those routes so ineffective then shorten up the route tree. Logic+common sense=success

I dont remember anyone other than the few staunch Jameis haters that felt like our receiving corps was anything but severely lacking. It was so easy to game plan for the Bucs. The Cowboys and the Saints games… everyone likes to point at the shortcomings of Jameis, but after Brate was hurt, that was the final straw. The offense had one weapon and that was it. I laugh at the people that try so hard to pin this stuff on Jameis, or Donavan Smith, or Doug Martin…
The truth this was the result of the end of the season and a paper thin roster. Licht is doing a very good job in building the roster. I have understood and applaud every decision except the Aguayo and Sims (we really needed Oline, and they were available and better backs were on the board) draft picks. Even if he has a pro bowl career I don’t understand placing such a premium pick on a player that made such a low percentage of field goals over 40 yards. But that is one pick. I thought he should trade up to get Noah Spence.. didn’t have to. Patience landed OJ Howard. I kind of wanted to trade up for the RB in the second this year but the Bucs would not have had Evans, McNichols (who I think will outpace the 5th round pick) and probably Godwin.
Licht is doing a very good job. The misses like ASJ, I understand his logic. Licht is building a team to win now and sustain wins for the future. It’s very, very hard to do.

ALL DUE to the fact we have two more blockers. The Bucs have not had a true TE that can BLOCK
Also add the fact of quicker throws from Jamies due to having weapons…

Faker you have a solid point about incorporating shorter passes. It will most definitely open up the vertical deep routes and indeed Sean Payton’s playbook is an excellent example. For some reason Jameis seems to struggle with some of those shorter passes. His mechanics are truly the key to this offense going forward. They say it’s a statistical fact that QBs take the biggest leap in their development during their 3rd year. Honestly that’s why everyone is jumping on the bandwagon and projecting us to make the playoffs. Jameis is due for his 3rd year leap. Having this offensive depth, should propel him into mvp conversation. I mean seriously. High expectations or not, the team needs to deliver.

“2-3 throws per game” I will trade all day long for taking chances going down the field. I can’t imagine how much the field would have condensed without taking those chances. You have to throw that ball occasionally just so the defense knows you will.
It is amusing to me how the underneath receivers, that Jameis overlooks, always run the right route, make the correct read, always make the catch, always break the tackle to reach the first down mark.
Game is just way more complicated. Was Jameis perfect, not even close. Will he improve, yep. This is the best QB trajectory the Bucs have ever had. They seem to have a great front office and coaching staff. Lets try to enjoy this ride.

Tnew- 26% completion percentage on throws longer than 20 yards isn’t keeping the d honest especially when they know you can’t complete that pass. Weapons will help as near the end of the year we only had Evans after the Brate injury but these issues were prevalent all year. Hopefully Jameis with more weapons won’t be so locked in on getting the ball to one receiver.

Last I checked, NFL football is still a T-E-A-M sport. I’ve seen folks blame Jameis, blame the OLine, blame the RBs, blame the WRs / TEs, but guess what … everyone shares in glory when you win, and everyone shares in the ‘blame’ when you lose. If all 11 cylinders aren’t firing properly, there’s bound to be a lot of sputtering going on. Bucs now have a pretty solid starting lineup, on both offense & defense (well, what I think will be the starting lineup at least … only time will tell). Lots of work yet to do to pull it all together obviously, but that’s what OTAs & preseason are all about. I’m convinced that Jason Licht, Dirk Koetter & Mike Smith ‘get it’ … this is a new team with a new mindset: WIN NOW. Have no idea what our final record will be, but I’m convinced we’ll see some real dogfights this season. This is gonna be fun.

This makes Hump look bad. Where was a safety valve in our game plan for #3 to bail? When Brady seems to get stuck he always seems to be able to find Edelman open for a short gain. In fairness we also were short our 3rd receiving back.
Sims could have made a difference as an outlet. Whatever….this year we are loaded! Sims is back and our shiny new toy RB is noted for excellent receiving skills! We’ll have backs who can not only catch out of the backfield but two who EXCEL at it!
And of course the other targets…ME..DJAX..OJ and Brate….how will DC’s respond?

In an attempt to not argue all day let’s call it 50/50. It wasn’t just DSmith (if at all) Hawley let people up the middle, the RT position was awful see Dallas game.
Luckily I think there may be a solution in UDFA Thomas Sperbeck. This kid is nice, his highlights show him taking the top off of defenses AND the kid has superb hands. Don’t let his 40 times (4.47 best) deceive you the kid can run fast.

Jackson and Godwin at receiver, Brate and Howard at TE, Sweezy at OG and Marpet at OC, and another year of Jameis maturation will equate into improved OL play, faster and more targets, added blocking from TE and fewer hits on Jameis.

jameis has had ONE NFL caliber receiver to throw to basically his entire career thus far. VJAX has been washed up and irrelevant for nearly three years. hump’s a good story and a role player but put’s ZERO fear in any defense ever…
Godwin, Sperbeck and obviously oj and desean will make a difference. hump will assume his rightful place at #5

Well we run alot of vertical routes which take longer to break. And our receivers have been awful outside of Evans and even he is a bit raw in terms of route running/development. Combining those two factors will result in more qb hits. So upgrading the receivers will allow the routes to develop faster and Jsmeis will be able to get rid of the ball quicker, reducing the time pass rushers will have to hit our qb. We could run five yard slants every pass and our oline would look like an all pro unit, but Koetter dosent roll like that. He airs it out. Wether or not he should have incorporated more short slants into his offense is up for debate but the being that blaming the oline for the qb hits dosent tell the whole story.

Tnew-this isn’t college where WRs are running open, in this league separation is created by accurate throws thrown to a spot where only the wr can get it, play design or exposing a matchup that favors your team.
Yes, you want to throw deep to loosen up a d in theory but you have to hit on those throws at more than 26% to get teams to fear them.
Not saying don’t throw deep as you need to just give Jameis options and then hammer it into him he doesn’t need a homerun ball on every drive.

Our OL has the “potential” to be very, very good.
We need Sweezy healthy and we have to find an RT…perhaps Benenoch perhaps somebody not even on the roster yet. But if Sweezy is healthy and we find a good RT this line will be stout. No more Hawley getting abused at Center and no more swinging gate at RT…there is room for a HUGE improvement.

Ronde was a nice guy but a beast on the field. Gave no shorts to no one when he was attacking. I remember years ago against the Jets this lineman was grabbing and pulling on his facemask and you could see the rage in his eyes and on his face as rained down hammer blows on the dudes forearm. Unfortunately during thatbrain he rained one on a punk referee too. Dude got dropped like a bad habit! He got fined 25 gs too. Don’t think we’ll ever see GMC93 ever get that mad even if someone sucker hit one of his team mates. Don’t think he has it in him which is fine being the faithful man he is, but come on Gerald you still gotta play LIKE you’re angry! We need more sacks and pressures on 3rd and 10 and hurry up offenses in the 4th and more tackles for loss throughout throughout the game. You have great get off so that should not be a problem.

DB55.. thing about Sperbeck I notice is that he is very sudden in his breaks. He sets up DBS well and somehow he gets separation. Gets DB’s leaning. Uses an arm bar, not a push off, an arm bar very well. Makes tough catches routinely but somehow he mixes in concentration drops in the mix. Must clean up those. If he is truly 4.59, its going to be really tough to make the team. Still not sure how an unofficial 4.47 swings all the way to 4.59 but hey whatever.

To me it seems as though he has a legit chance at competing for 1/6 WR spots. I was impressed by his game, he seems a bit more dynamic to me than Hump, but what do I know?

You guys seem to think that attitude=production. Did Ayers’ attitude equal production? The ONE example you guys use over and over is GMC. Look around the league, they’re not all foaming at the mouth madmen. Even James Harrison helps players up. I guess he’s soft too!

This is the type of training camp a lot of long-time Buc fans have missed: Real, legitimate competition. It’s where we want to be as an organization where roster spots are difficult to obtain and talent becomes abundant. I’m going to enjoy this.

Look at ALL the excuses needed to explain Donovan Smith. And it’s not just PFF –
most of the national sites think the Bucs are weak at O-line. Also, wasn’t Marpet playing with the same receivers as Smith? They didn’t effect his stats and QB hurries and hits allowed.
Cue the D. Smith defenders who say… “But, but… Donovan was going against the best DE’s in the league.”
Yes – and failing a ridiculous amount of the time. He is not a top 20 starting LT in the NFL right now. which means he is a below average starting LT in the NFL. Doesn’t our 23 year old franchise QB deserve better than a below average LT?
If the Bucs addressed this next offseason and moved Smith inside or to RT – they could be domoinant.

If Sweezy can hold up- and pamphile/Benenoch can unseat Dotson,
Then we may have a great line.
Donovan is a great young Tackle. Gotta be the strongest Left Tackle in the league.
Jameis always runs behing Smith, when he is trying to extend a play.
Licht has done an outstanding job of drafting O-Linemen.

Still need an unquestioned talent at LT. Not for nothing but for the simple fact so many doubt the fact Smith can be a LT in this league should be a red flag. His draft profile the year he came out stated his best NFL position is guard.

What lol? Hump is the only legit underneath receiver we had all of last year and was tackled behind the 1st down marker plenty of times… why would the coach spend all offseason talking about needing guys who can catch short passes and create YAC if what you are saying is true? One of the weirder takes I’ve seen here

@ realist – plenty have said weapons for Winston are a priority – there were hashtag trends about it and the Joes have pushed it all offseason.
I will say you’re one of the few besides myself who has more hope for the O-line and doesn’t think it’s as simple as people make it out. Imo they were average in pass pro and below average in run blocking. Stats showing how often our RBs were hit behind the LOS are hard to ignore.
However I wonder how much time from snap to being “pressured” or “hit” is even factored in if at all? If a QB has 4-5 seconds before pressure comes it’s a lot different than 1-2 seconds. Lot less on the O-line for that.
Even that Bears play someone referenced – it was on a delay blitz where Winston almost had 3 full seconds before having to scramble. Most everyone was picked up but they had us in numbers. If we had a legit underneath option who can get open off the line immediately he likely would have gone there instead of scrambling but it worked out

Also remember during the stretch we had many WR and RB off the street. The offense was not able to audible at all!!! This is huge that we could not change into the right play because players did not know the audible calls and only knew a fraction of the playbook!!!!

Lord C… you didn’t catch the tone of my post… what i was saying was there are people that like to bash.. wait, make that criticize Jameis for his decision making downfield when he had

what I was saying was sarcasm because all of those things must be true to know that Jameis was making consistent poor reads. It was as a response that he was missing these “opportunities” by choosing the downfield read. You have to assume all of the things above for that premise to be true.

@ realist – true. I definitely was wanting a WR drafted last year and / or one signed off the street because it seemed really sketchy going with Vjax & Hump as our 2/3 with no contingency. too lazy to go find my old posts but I’m sure they’re there. I was high on Sterling Shepard (Kobe Faker was too actually lol but to another level); but happy with Noah Spence because he was my favorite DE.
I also wanted us to sign Anquan Boldin for the value over the top priced WRs that got big money like Sanu. TE was a ? based on ASJ but I’ve also been one of the ones consistently argue-ing on here that we need another TE when Joe thought we were set with Cam Brate because he lead the league in TDs. OJ Howard was my dream pick for us after the season ended and I started looking at the draft.
You did nail it tho man. I think I agreed with those positional needs at the time but was throwing in DT as well. The O-line is so young that I want to see another year before writing off certain positions as needing an obvious upgrade.
as of May 2017 I’d guess our primary needs next year =DT/DE/CB/OT & maybe S but Evans will get 2-3 years to see how he pans out. Our D-line is getting older and will need a talent infusion sooner than later. We’re good this year tho

Smith was a solid player who rarely stood out during the games – which is what you want from an offensive lineman. I don’t get the hate – watching the games I didn’t see it.
