Dream Draft For Jude

April 30th, 2017

What a draft weekend it was for the Buccaneers’ cornerbacks.

Undrafted corners Javien Elliot and Hey Jude Adjei-Barimah, caretakers of the Bucs’ nickel corner position, were delivered quite a dose of job security.

General manager Jason Licht didn’t draft a cornerback. Joe suspects Elliot and Jude were partying like Bucs fans (video here) were with Joe, Bucs Uncensored host Justin Pawlowski and iconic JoeBucsFan.com columnist Ira Kaufman.

Tampa Bay is thin at corner. It’s obvious.

Josh Robinson couldn’t get defensive snaps ahead of still-unemployed Alterraun Verner last season. What does that say?

Elliot and Jude are growing in their roles but they’re not special. Ryan Smith is being moved to corner from safety, where he was a failed rookie experiment in 2016. Right now, Joe has zero confidence in Smith at corner. The Bucs already poorly evaluated him as a safety and as a kick returner. That doesn’t inspire belief in the guy.

Joe will continue to cross his fingers that Vernon Hargreaves and Brent Grimes can be workhorse corners again this season. That will be critical to the Bucs improving on their 9-7 record.

Some vets may lose their jobs to these MANY CBs drafted this weekend. So maybe we pick up a vet who lost his job, or trade for one (not Butler)
    In Licht I Trust

  2. Stpetebucsfan Says:

I thought Hey Jude flashed some real talent last year in between boneheaded penalities and other mistakes. As he gains experience and coaching I think he’s only going to get better.

Any nominees for this list of players who MUST cut down penalities and boneheaded plays..

Hey Jude…..Donavan Smith and half the OL…Safeties taking incorrect angles…

We made our share of mistakes on D last year especially early. I thought a big part of our improvement over the 2nd half was players finally getting Smitty’s system and cutting down on mistakes and penalties. If we can keep that trend going we’ll get better this year as well.

  3. Kobe Faker Says:

Macolm Butler for our 2018 1st round pick

    Lets do it BIG

2017 Tampa bay Bucs is the 2016 atlanta and 2015 carolina

  4. Kobe Faker Says:

    Richard Sherman?

Hard Knocks might break all time viewer records!

  5. Tampabayucfan Says:

I wouldn’t write Smith off just yet…..also, I suspect we will pick up a CB from one of the many cuts forthcoming.

  6. tabascco Says:

Hey Joe, of the UDF brought in this weekend who in your opinion has the best shot at making the team? Really like the tight end so far the best, wish we could of signed Nickerson

  7. Stpetebucsfan Says:

Dream draft for Joe Mixon as well. Has everybody heard the furor in Cincy over this pick because of all the prior thuggery that has taken place with the Bengals.

And then the most reassuring comment from any player in this draft. Joe Mixon was asked about joining his new teammate PacMan Jones and what did he think of the Pacman?

“He’s a good dude,” Mixon said. “Coming over here, I’m sure he’ll show me around.”

Show him around? Bwaaahaaahaaa. Just what Bengal fans wanted!!!! Of course if PacMan can’t teach Mixon the “ropes” there’s always Vontaze Burfict another class act.

The Bengals are now making the Raiders look like a bunch of sissies…eat your hearts out RaiderNation.

  8. Pat Says:

Good point about the Corners. It also looks like the DE position could end up being an Achilles Heel like the WR position ended up being last year except it would be even worse with DE because at least at WR we had M Evans. The Defensive players selected all appear to be good BUT they seem to fit very specific roles only. Mike Smith is already on the spot to figure out how to make this defense successful. The approach appears to be 180 degrees opposite from what Lovie wrongly attempted by forcing his system on the players. Mike Smith’s abilities as a coach are really going to have a chance to shine.

  9. LifeOfABucFan Says:

Hey Jude showed flashes? When??? All I remember is that stupid penalty that cost us the Raiders game that was IN OUR BACK POCKET!!!

Just hoping some of the UDFA and invites will work out at CB, I think they got a couple of them.

Maybe bring in a FA when the cuts begin to make room for the newly minted draftees?

  10. johnnybuc Says:

still a bunch of undrafted guys out there to sign and not fair not to give smith a fair shot just because you didn’t like him at safety or returner. he’s proven to be a good special teamer and if develops and becomes our primary back up outside corner then u will know why they didn’t pick any. love the site but sometimes i think you jump to conclusions there’s a reason they didn’t pick none..

  11. JTHV Says:

    Grimes? Old
VHIII? Highly overrated, never will be a lockdown, island CB
    Jude? Meh
    Elliot? Camp Fodder
Smith? 4th round reach, would’ve went undrafted
    Robinson? Gunner, 3rd round bust

Be 100% honest with yourself, our entire stable at CB is not very good.

  12. LakeLandBuc Says:

When the Atlanta Falcons drafted Damontae Kazee in the 5th Round ahead of the Bucs. That saved Jude for the moment, I thought we should have signed Nickell Robey-Coleman during Free Agency to be our Slot CB. I hate to put a person down, but Jude is straight trash. I don’t see why the Bucs keep him around. 23 games with the Bucs, Jude 62 Tackles, 0 INT, 3 PD. Last 2 seasons for Kazee…28 games, 142 Tackles,15 INTS, 15 PD, 2 TD, 3 FF. I hate that we miss on Kazee.

  13. Tackleblockwin Says:

No doubt about it. The depth and quality at CB scares me. I’m ok with Grimes and VH3, but after those two the drop off is pretty significant.

  14. LakeLandBuc Says:

Ryan Smith or Josh Robinson would be an upgrade over Jude at CB.

  15. Gencoimports Says:

We need to replace Jude immediately. He is a PED violator, suspended while we were in a playoff run and therefore can no longer be trusted. I’m shocked, shocked that no one has pointed this out in this post and comments.

  16. LakeLandBuc Says:

At least Josh Robinson has the speed to stay with receivers.

  17. LakeLandBuc Says:

Gencolmports, the only PED violator people here want to see the Bucs get rid of is Doug Martin.

Smith? 4th round reach, would’ve went undrafted

Where do you get your information? Did you watch his college film. Did you look at his speed? He was drafted about where he was projected – 4th round. He’s got talent and speed for coverage. He picked off balls in college, and he can hit.

    More reflexive negativity.

Some of you armchair GMs crack me up with all this “he will never be……” or “he is at best……”
We all get paid to do something and not one person on these threads gets paid to evaluate football players. Good comical reading though can never be all bad.

  21. LakeLandBuc Says:

SB..I’m not evaluating Jude…I mean what have the guy done during his 2 seasons here to maintain a roster spot? He reminds me of Myron Lewis.

  22. Gencoimports Says:

I know Lakeland, I’m sure you figured out I was being sarcastic, pointing out the hypocrisy here.

  23. LakeLandBuc Says:

It will be hard for us to claim a player on waivers this season. Too many teams in front of us. We may have to trade for a CB this season.

  24. Pawel Says:

RYAN SMITH WILL BE A BEAST AT CB. BOOK IT.

  25. LakeLandBuc Says:

Ryan Smith should be our Slot CB and he can continue to play Special Teams. But Vernon Hargreaves has to step it up this season. We passed on too many stud players to draft him at 11.

  26. denjoe Says:

1 or 2 injuries at CB or OL (other than center) and it could be a rough year.
We still do not have quality depth at these positions. IMO

  27. Cobraboy Says:

Better pass rush = Better corner play.

  28. LakeLandBuc Says:

Yeah we may end up putting Keith Tandy back at CB.

  29. Defense Rules Says:

Folks are being too pessimistic about our CBs. I expect Brent Grimes to have as good a year as last year (maybe even better if our DLine keeps the pressure on opposing QBs). VHIII now has a year under his belt (being a starting rookie corner can’t be easy when other teams work to stay away from the guy playing opposite you). Predicting now that Ryan Smith will win the Nickel CB job … Bucs wasted a lot of time training him at safety. Kid’s going to open a lot of eyes. Jude & Josh are both very respectable rotation players, but I’m still not sold on Elliott. Tend to think there’s a good chance that Licht adds another CB to the mix before the season starts.

  30. JonBuc Says:

Jude needs to beat it given his off the ball panick penalty vs the Raiders not to mention the suspension…

  31. SB Says:

I wasn’t really referring to you Lakeland. More towards the negative Nancies that plague this fanbase.
I for one think VH3 will make Huge strides this yr. Playing 98% of snaps as a rookie opposite a Pro Bowl CB is a tough accomplishment. This yr he will play more aggressive I am sure. Especially if we have better safety help behind him.

  32. LakeLandBuc Says:

We may have to run more stunts this season. Kind of like what Greg Schiano was doing.

  33. SB Says:

Thank you Defense. That was well put. I concur whole-heartedly

  34. LakeLandBuc Says:

SB……Jude and Elliott shouldn’t be on the roster. I may sound crazy, but I think Keith Tandy should be playing more CB. We still have Chris Conte, J.J.Wilcox and Justin Evans at Safety.

  35. Trubucfan22 Says:

I actually think our CB group is set up nicely for this season.

    1. Grimes
    2. Hargreaves
Nickel. Jude/Elliot (both showed they are competent at the job)
    5. Ryan smith. who knows what to expect really, but he is a good athlete.
    6. Josh Robinson. Has a few career starts under his belt on the Vikings. Has a full year of growth in this defense to use if we do call his name. Otherwise is still a fantastic special teams player.

Of course if injuries strike, plans get thrown out the window. We can probably deal with 1 injury, but 2 simultaneously would be tough to have confidence in. I guess it depends on what smith and Robinson can do. We have no idea what to expect from them. Could be great, could be flops. I’m optimistic, so I think we will be fine. CB play was fine last year. We need better play from the front 7 and consistent pass rush.

  36. Buc1987 Says:

Hey Jude, don’t make it bad
Take a sad song and make it better
Remember to let her into your heart
Then you can start to make it better

    Hey Jude, don’t be afraid
You were made to go out and get her
The minute you let her under your skin
Then you begin to make it better

  37. Kobe Faker Says:

Ryan smith and josh robinson is straight trash and cant play a lick

If they did know how, mike smith would have played them over shut down corners jab and elliot

You know how badly licht wanted ryan smith, his 4th round pick to be on the field?

    He sucks

You know more than mike smith?

  40. LakeLandBuc Says:

We have to deal with Taylor Gabriel, Willie Snead, Christian McCaffrey and Curtis Samuels this season in the slot. I hope I’m wrong, but I just don’t see Jude or Elliott holding up against them. Maybe we can get some production out of Ryan Smith.

  41. LakeLandBuc Says:

Kobe, in that case we are Toast against the Falcons, Saints and Panthers in the slot.

  42. LakeLandBuc Says:

I guess we will have to out score them.

  43. Mike Johnson Says:

ME think some of last yrs secondary guys are gonna lose starting jobs. Me also think If Mixon can stay out of trouble, he’s gonna be the next..Barry Sanders. And lastly, me think we will need another O lineman or 2 after Easy Money sweezy’s back gives out again. Me also hope..we can somehow get another pass rusher. You never..ever have enough of them!

  44. Kobe Faker Says:

    Lake

There is a reason why licht is stating that we are behind on defensive personnel

There is absolutely NO ONE knows our weaknesses than Mike Smith. You bet your ass Mike smith didnt fully explain himself to licht when he signed his extension, what our holes are and what players we need

Im thinking licht is upset we didnt get a corner in the draft for mike smith

  45. Arealbucfan Says:

Elliot hasn’t played much football.. walk on at Florida state that ended up being a starter.. dudes a worker.. he is talented and learns fast.. he guarded some of the best WRs in college football at Florida state and he practiced opposite of JW so don’t be surprised if he takes over for Jude as he’s a much better athlete but he’s a step behind due to playing time.. when he finally does click and starts trying to reach his potential, which Jude has probably already done, he could start as #2 opposite Hargreaves. Now that he has more of a handle on Smiths defense I expect a pretty good year out of him

Plenty of vets will be available later on. Great draft again by Licht

  49. LakeLandBuc Says:

The draft was great, we filled many holes. But the job isn’t finish, we still have to get some decent Corners.

  50. Demetre Says:

Evans could still be projected to corner. He has speed and can cover. Need a physical corner to match up (at least somewhat) with Julio.

  55. Gencoimports Says:

one of these days we need to get a tall 6-3 corner with speed.

    Undrafted

  59. Gilhealy Says:

I’ll tell ya, I like Humphries well enough, but the WR from Boise we signed as a UDFA could give him a run for the money. Plus, McNichols could also fill that spot at times. I’m thinking Chuck Sims is on the hot seat. That Arthur Duncan running style ain’t working. Lawrence Welk could’ve run him out on stage once a night. Only the best will survive from now on.

I am not as worried about the CB’s as I am the D Line. For all the talk Licht had about taking D Linemen, he only took a DT in round 7. GMC is another year older, Baker is 29, Spence is still growing, Will G is great at the run but not as a pass rusher, does anyone think Jaq Smith will stay healthy?

  62. Buccfan37 Says:

St.pete… Marvin Lewis is on the hot seat in Cincy, Mixon may save his job.

  63. Rod Munch Says:

Can’t fix everything in the draft. I think the Bucs did a great job in the draft but corner depth is, as stated, a huge hole. Perhaps with Spence coming into year two, the return of a hopefully healthy J Smith, 16 games out of Ayers and the entire team going into the second year of this defensive scheme – along with Mike Smith perhaps blitzing more and actually using David as the all-around stud he is – perhaps there will be more pressure on quarterbacks in which case all the defensive backs on the team get a big upgrade. If you can get to the QB then you don’t actually need a ton of talent at corner, perhaps that will work out for us…perhaps.

  64. BuccaneEric75 Says:

Life, you’re right. If ever a team could point to just 1 stupid play that cost a team a playoff spot, it’s the pointless Jude penalty against Oakland. As bad as we played in the second half on both sides of the ball, that should have been a win. I was unable to watch the game but my buddy who is a Raiders fan has league pass and set his iPad in front of the TV so I could watch. Just as the game ended I hung up on him!

  65. Issic Haggins Says:

Scale of 1 to 10 as a group you are looking at a 6 and if Grimes goes down or regresses you are looking at a 3

  66. TheMaineBucsFan Says:

How much improvement will we see in Jameis this year? He’s been great but this is the year that he needs to really cut down on turnovers and price himself. His stats were good, not great last year. He era a pass since all his receivers were hurt and teams doubled Evans every play. I expect at least 30 Tds with 15 or less picks and 4,500 yards. Let’s go BUCS!

  67. TheMaineBucsFan Says:

Sorry about the spelling above!!! Stupid cell phone comments never work out. Prove not price and gets not era.

  68. Brett Says:

Schiano threw out a lot of developmental players Raheem had, and Lovie threw out Schiano’s. Nice to see us developing some low-round and undrafted guys. Very refreshing to see guys like Jude and OL Kevin Pamphile.

  69. JimmyJack Says:

Corner is a difficult position to master. It takes a bit of patience sometimes with these low end backups before they are fully ready to compete at the pro level. The Bugs must feel that their returning backup corners can show improvement this season. If they don’t they’ll be replaced which can be risky business

  70. LakeLandBuc Says:

We had a good, solid draft and I believe we will have a good, solid season. I believe we have a good defense, and i believe our defense will surprise some people. Our offense could be our greatest asset to our defense, if we cut down on the turnovers. I predict that Ryan Smith will be our starting Slot CB and he will have a good season.

  71. Pawel Says:

    Kobe
Ryan Smith came out as a saftey and worked as a CB in offseason and they love him, that’s why they didn’t draft a CB. My take.

  72. Kobe Faker Says:

In college, the coaches tried him at safety but he couldnt tackle so they put him at corner

ryans rookie year he was behind every corner and they tried him back to safety. they found out that the college coaches were right and at 180lbs he cant tackle.

A 4th rounder not on the field made licht and the scouts look bad. koetter felt bad and put ryan smith as the ball girl on kickoffs.

just catch the ball and knee down

and just like a ball girl in baseball, she accidentally grabs a fair ball thinking its a foulball, Ryan smith caught the ball and started running with the ball

  73. Buccaneer scotty Says:

Great job on the undrafted F/A players! And tomorrow will be to late we already got the info from real news sites

  74. Defense Rules Says:

Kobe, your take on Ryan Smith is close to the exact opposite from what I’ve read elsewhere. Bucs drafted him to be a safety, not a corner, and he spent most of last year being developed as a safety. But that’s not his natural position, CB is, and the Bucs finally figured that out. And he’s not 180 lbs Kobe … he’s 6′ & 190 lbs (happens to be the tallest of all our CBs by the way). Fairly fast & quick too (ran a 4.47 sec 40-yd). Everything I’ve read indicates that the Bucs coaches are pretty high on him as a CB. Personally think he’s in the mix for nickel corner.

  75. LakeLandBuc Says:

Jason Licht didn’t didn’t sign a CB in Free Agency and he didn’t draft a CB. He must be please with the CBs that we have on the roster. Right now we have Ryan Smith, Cody Riggs, Javien Elliott, Jude Adjei-Barimah fighting for maybe 2 positions behind Vernon Hargreaves, Josh Robinson,Brent Grimes.

  76. LakeLandBuc Says:

    GMC 7 Sacks…Chris Baker 4 Sacks…Clinton McDonald 3 Sacks..Noah Spence 7 Sacks..Will Gholston 4 Sacks.. Jack Smith 6 Sacks..Robert Ayers 6 Sacks…the rest of the O-Line 2 sacks..LVD/Kwon/Beckwith/Bond 6 Sacks. DBs 2 Sacks. That’s 47 Sacks, I believe we can hit this number barring injuries.

  77. BucTrooper Says:

Licht has put an awful lot of faith in two drug addicts.

  78. Eric Says:

What is worse, the fact that we are all incompetent to opine, or the folks that read it anyway?

As for the defense, who knows, a few key turnovers and confidence swells, especially if our offense is humming as we expect it will.

and the offense will be humming, right?

  79. LakeLandBuc Says:

Gregg Rosenthal of NFL.Com picked the Bucs as one of his 5 teams that improved the most after the 2017 NFL draft. This is what he had to say…………Tight end O.J. Howard should transform the Bucs’ offense. As an in-line tight end who can block when asked, Howard is going to make the Bucs more difficult to matchup with. Pity the defense that gets caught with the wrong defenders on the field when the Bucs go into a hurry up with Mike Evans, DeSean Jackson and Howard out there at the same time.

Jameis Winston’s dream offseason continued when the Bucs selected wide receiver Chris Godwin (Round 3) and Boise State running back Jeremy McNichols (Round 5). Godwin is known for his route-running, and McNichols is a great pass catcher in the mold of his new teammate and fellow Boise State alum Doug Martin.

The Bucs’ defense remains a concern and could really use safety Justin Evans (Round 2) and inside linebacker Kendell Beckwith (Round 3) to contribute right away. At best, this Bucs defense can be average. General manager Jason Licht is taking a similar approach to his old boss Bill Belichick: Load up on offense, support your franchise quarterback with weapons and figure out a way to make the defense good enough.

Get ready to see plenty of this bad ass team on “Hard Knocks” and then during a run to the playoffs.

Richard Sherman is both overrated and a bag of dcks no one would want near their ball club. Guy is a walking talking PR nightmare. Way more than Mixon will ever be

  90. Blake_bucsfan Says:

It really grinds my Gears that we Missed out on both Joe Mixon & James Conner by 2 picks.

And while I think this was a solid draft that addressed our depth issues, with 2 A+ Steals in O.J. & Godwin, if there was one pick I would change, I would swap out Justin Evans in round 2 for Alvin Kamara/ Kareem Hunt.

Not gonna sit here and pretend that we didn’t need a Safety, we absolutely did. And I think that McNichols is a solid pick for what was left on the board when we picked him.

But I can’t help myself from thinking that we should have come away with one of the upper echelon backs in this draft to truly compete for a starting spot. Kareem Hunt is going to be a really good back, can do it all, great balance through contact, and elite ball security. Kamara is more of a freak athlete, not really a natural runner, but could grow into an excellent back. Hate to see him go to the ‘Aints.

Justin Evans flashes on tape with some splash plays, and their is no questioning his Range & Athleticism. But he appears to take some really poor pursuit angles, and doesn’t seem to have exceptional instincts in the open field. And like Mayock/ Joe have made note of, he’s got a real problem wrapping up. Granted there are only 5 tapes available on draftbreakdown, but I would have liked to see more of a consistent player on tape to justify his 2nd round status.

Then I again, as much as I can kvetch, I have trust in the talent evaluation of Jason Licht. It’s my belief that he’s done a commendable job at transforming our once maligned franchise into a legit contender. Even if he’s not right 100% of the time.

Here’s hoping Justin Evans is the next Patrick Chung, and that Jeremy McNichols has a phenomenal rookie year.

  93. 813bucboi Says:
