“Bucs Have Grown Comfortable With Him”

April 27th, 2017

Will he pull the trigger?

A key NFL insider with serious connections thinks it could happen.

Heavy metal headbanging Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports has loads of contacts throughout the NFL. He’s been working the phones and he believes the Bucs just may have their running back this evening.

And who might that be, claims La Canfora? That would be Dalvin Cook.

In pumping out his mock draft today, La Canfora believes the Bucs are look for Cook, despite the scare tactics of some.

His off-field stuff will cause him to drop, but there is big-time talent there, and from everything I gather the Bucs have grown comfortable with him. If they don’t go running back here, I suspect they try to make a play for Joe Mixon in Round 2.

Now if the Bucs do get Mixon tomorrow, that tells Joe that Mixon did some kind of sales job on himself with Bucs brass.

At least Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht is not just looking for preacher’s sons and boy scouts. He drafted knucklehead ASJackwagon (there is a reason this fool slipped to the second round. And even when half of America was screaming at Licht not to do so, he was good with drafting America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston.

  1. Lamarcus Says:

Cook should be our pick. Keyword : should

  2. mhall085 Says:

I love Cook, and he’s one of a number of players I’d love to see the Bucs get.

But, seriously, how RIGHT is La Canfora? He may have contacts galore, but how often is he actually RIGHT?

  3. Lunchbox Says:

I’d be happy with Cook if that’s who we got. You can say whatever you want about his performance at the combine, but look at his performance in games, his stats.

The one thing that scares me about Cook is his ball security, but that can be coached.

I’d also be fine with it if we got Mixon. And if we got him in the 2nd round, it would be great value, provided he wasn’t more trouble once he got into the league, which would be the big question.

  4. 813bucboi Says:

draft smoke….I believe we trade back and draft defense first….maybe trade up for cook in the second after getting an extra pick but no way we grab him in the his round…..GO BUCS!!!!

  5. Mentor Says:

PLEASE NO!! No RBs in the 1st round.

  6. LakeLandBuc Says:

Jameis Winston endorsed Dalvin Cook a month ago….enough said.

  7. Derrick Says:

Jameis had to see his ‘boys’ that year in Tally and had no issue going on record saying he’d like to play with him in Tampa. Jameis all business in the pros.

  8. LargoBuc Says:

Unless Malik Hooker drops, im all for Cook. Sure we could get a rb later, but none as electric as DC4.

  9. Sf Says:

    Safety, then mixon

  10. PRBucFan Says:

Wow if we draft Nixon, I might just have to reevaluate some things in terms of my Bucs.

    I’d be shocked

  11. LakeLandBuc Says:

Dalvin Cook did 22 reps on the bench press at the combine. I don’t see any issues with his shoulders. Christian McCaffrey did 10 reps on the bench press.

  12. Lord Cornelius Says:

The only things that will make me mad in this draft are trading up or reaching on someone like Adoree Jackson if there is a Cook/Corey Davis/Derek Barnett on the board.

I’m fine with pretty much anything else.

Cook = Jamaal Charles with more tackle breaking ability. F*ck the combine. Same 20 yard split in pads that John Ross measured at combine. Also fastest reaction time ever charted in terms of reading holes via sports science. Dude has vision / balance / extreme burst / hands or basically everything an elite back needs. Biggest weakness is probably pass blocking but he’s still adequate there.

  13. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

We shall see. 3 hours 12 minutes from now.

  14. JonBuc Says:

Speculation fatigue setting in…it’s ( almost ) time!

  15. Pickgrin Says:

Cook will likely be off the board at 19. Which is a shame but realistic.

Assuming that’s the case – I’m really hoping that Corey Davis somehow slips to 19. McCaffrey would be my next somewhat realistic hope considering that there’s no way OJ Howard gets anywhere near our draft position.

Best scenario if Cook, Howard, Davis and McCaffrey are off the board would be a trade down to get more picks and then draft Budda Baker or Adore Jackson towards the bottom of the 1st.

  16. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

There are not a lot of ways to go wrong this year…avoid kicker, punter and long snapper in the first few rounds and we are good.

  17. BuccaneEric75 Says:

    It’s almost time!

  18. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Anyone notice ‘Nole’ has been invisible?

  19. Tom S. Says:

I personally think they like him a lot and are trying to spread doubt so as not to be leapfrogged. Of course Philly could also use Dalvin and has a higher pick.

Regaring ASJackwagon (would’ve been a great nickname when he was still here), he really wasn’t a first round guy on tape alone. His production dropped his final year at UW, he had questions about effort and consistency you could clearly see on his film, plus injury questions with his foot fracture. Considering him as a first round pick would have been purely speculation based on potential and a reach. Njoku is a far better prospect even if he’s not the blocker and will go mid-late first this year.

  20. NJBucsFan Says:

Lakeland he also endorsed AP and Roberto. Enough said

  21. Zwak Says:

Cook or Howard, if they are gone get a DE!

  22. NJBucsFan Says:

I’m convinced NOS is Joe as a poster. Busy day for him so no time to post

  23. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Honestly, there is no point in predicting someone will not slide to us.

All the mocks are just guessing, and usually start going wrong by pick 5, this year, probably by pick 2. Any team could throw the mocks off the rails, and when that happens, some players will slide like crazy.

Even though they are worthy of being taken higher.

Last year, 10+ players worthy of first round (that had ratings of 6.3 or better) slid into the second round.

And several players that many thought would not be taken in the first round were taken there.

Teams want what they want. We all know that BPA at a position of need is the best policy, but many teams draft strictly by need instead. Heck, the Bucs did it under Dominick every year.

The teams that do that cause good players to slide.

  24. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    NJBucsFan Says
“…he also endorsed AP and Roberto.”

Don’t give up on Aguayo just yet.

  25. darin Says:

I think the stinking panthers take cook. Hope im wrong cuz Ive grown comfy getting him too. If not i highly doubt theyd take mixon. Lets find out already. Go bucs

  26. 813bucboi Says:

cook and j.charles are a good comparison….both had injury concerns coming into the league and both have fumbling issues….wouldn’t be mad at a j.charles clone as long as we don’t waste a first round pick on him….what round did he(Charles) get drafted in?….GO BUCS!!!!

  27. Eric Says:

Willing to bet the eagles pick him.

  28. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Really bro??? I’m saving all my dialogue for after our pick. No worries homie I’m around.

  29. Steven007 Says:

Bonzai, you said it. BPA no matter who that turns out to be. Seems hard to screw up. Yet thats what happens half the time…

  30. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

And I’m STILL TAKING BETS. Which is waste to tell you Eric. All hot air round this piece.

  31. Eric Says:

If he is there at 19 they will sprint to the podium to select him. Perfect fit for what they need on offense.

These are the folks that stuck their necks out a mile for Jameis – and were rewarded.

“off field stuff” causes Cook to drop, but Mixon is rising?

    That makes no sense.

  32. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

    What you wagering Eric???

  33. mike10 Says:

    Joecookfan.com

  34. Buccaneer scotty Says:

Winston also endorsed Peterson and he’s a New Orleans Saint(just sayin)

  35. Joeypoppems Says:

Mixon’s incident is over and done with. It is in the past. The concern with Dalvin Cook isn’t with Cook himself, but the people he surrounds himself with. Those people will still be there after he is picked which means to teams the problem will still be there after he is picked. That is the difference.

  36. Eric Denman Says:

    I trust Licht but damnit I don’t think he’s a pressing need.

  37. Pat Says:

RB J Charles Rd 3 pick 73. I looked it up.

  38. DB55 Says:

Why can’t we draft them both?

  39. Guzzie Says:

First off, Dalvin Cook will not get drafted in the first round, it’s not happening, second the only players the Bucs should trade up for, like only giving up a 4th, are Corey Davis or OJ Howard, third the only player available at 19 that is a must draft is also Corey Davis, everyone else trading down is the best option. Players 20-50 are pretty much the same as far as grades, it’s just a matter of which position to attack first, we need a WR RB TE DE S DT OT, only 3-4 of those 7 draft picks can be reasonably expected to contribute to the team this year

  40. Eric Says:

LOL well considering this is an internet site with no real means of identifying each other I will bet…

…..man, idk. but I still think philly will grab him.

  41. Pat Says:

FWIW-our first game next year is in Miami. That’s Dalvin Cooks hometown

  42. Joeypoppems Says:

I said it on the open thread. I think they work a trade out with Seattle and target either Budda Baker or Adoree Jackson at #26. At 26 they are also ahead of the trio of Green Bay, Dallas, and Pittsburgh who have all been linked to DBs throughout the process.

  43. Tampa Tony Says:

I’ve learned what the Joes should learn DONT FALL IN LOVE WITH ONE PLAYER

Cook would be nice but he’s a luxury pick, the o line didn’t block well last year, we still need young impact defenders to stop Brees and Ryan

I’ll support whoever they take but would rather have the best de available over any RB

  44. firethecannons Says:

trade back! then get Dalvin at the bottom of the 1st

  45. Steven007 Says:

NOS just loves his internet vapor bets…

  46. Ben Says:

Why isnt anyone talking about Charles Harris to the bucs?

  47. JimmyJack Says:

If Cook is available at our time it will say a lot about him whether we pick him or not. One’s gotta think the Bucs have the most info on him with Winston here. Jamies called the FSU coach his football daddy for crying out loud.

If the Buccaneers don’t know more about Davin Cook then the other 31 teams then they are not very good at what they do.

  48. Steven007 Says:

    Eric: Philly and also Indy.

  49. Eric Says:

Ya he won’t fall and everyone will be crying tonight.

  50. Steven007 Says:

Grown comfortable could just as easily mean they’ve grown comfortable with not picking him. We will know soon enough though.

  51. IndyBucsFan Says:

I’m cool with the pick but I think its a bad idea honestly. I haven’t watched many of his games but the highlights seem to illustrate his good (not amazing) speed. I feel like he will be an above average back in the league but not a true game changer…. Hope i’m wrong if we draft him.

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  52. rrsrq Says:

All the anticipation, what if they trade out of the first round and we have to wait until Friday night, uggghhhh.

  53. Lord Cornelius Says:

It doesn’t matter where Charles was drafted – he’d have been a 1st rounder if people knew he was the Jamaal Charles he’d end up as. Not like the Panthers/Cowboys/Steelers/Titans would have still drafted Stewart/Felix Jones/Mendenhall/Chris Johnson R1 in a re-draft over him

Also Cook has over 1500 more scrimmage yards; 9 more TDs; and a higher average yards per touch than Charles did coming out

  54. JA Says:

As for Cook, “say it ain’t so Joe.” -although I could live with it. As for Mixon-I hope we pass on the coward woman beater–don’t care if he was 17 or 70, it ain’t right. And for all you Mixon minion apologists, get a mirror. If you look into it and see someone that is capable of taking a sledgehammer to a woman’s face, then he’s your guy!

  55. Destinjohnny Says:

    Leopards always change their spots

  56. Billy Buc N Brazil Says:

Winston has the same pull as you and I at this hour. I suspect closer with contract talks this will change rapidly. I hope we trade with the chiefs or the browns and either pick up Cook or Mixon.!

  57. Getaclue Says:

Trade 19 for clevelands second rounders. Draft Budda baker,Joe Mixon and Zay Jones in the second

  58. Billy Buc N Brazil Says:

I’m feeling a trade up for Christian!! 13sh

  59. Stpetebucsfan Says:

    Joey

It’s the internet so I’m not going to claim either side is right but I feel I should bring it to your attention that there have now been several stories about a rogue agent’s helper spreading misinformation.

The best story I read that “seemed” to be honest was not only reporting this agent getting caught but more importantly one story did research in Tallahassee.

They claim that Dalvin did run with his “homies” early on and he DID grow up in the hood. His friends are not going to be trendy golf dudes from the club.

Still FSU coaches admitted their early concern. But apparently the RB coach his final year took him under his wing and when the guys showed up at Dalvin’s apartment he would text his RB coach who would come and do the dirty work and sends the homies packing. I saw this on one of the nets…HBO…BSPN can’t remember.

Bottom line for me…Dalvin has been generational….Mixon numbers are meh…he hasn’t stood out even from his own running mate who is also being touted as highly as he is.

Punching a woman in the grill may not be a disqualifier…..but it doesn’t make a guy more attractive just because he’s angry. His numbers last year are inconsistent with some big games against weak teams and mediocre games against the best competion. Kind of the opposite of Dalvin.

One player breaks all the records at his school…the other…???? Mixon is a good back…he hasn’t accomplished nearly what Dalvin or McCaffery nor what Forman did in Mixon’s same conference. The number aren;t even close.

  60. Ben Says:

Soo tired about ppl pigeon holing cook to the Bucs. Guess these fans are the same ones that are ok with a mediocre season. Anyonewatch any games last year where good teams consistently put up 30 pts on them. Rbs dont win championships. Defense and pass rush does. Ala Broncos 2015.
Watch the last 3 games of last season those of you who want cook first round.
Why not Mack or Perine or Foreman in mid? Not as if great RBs only get srafted in first round.

  61. Buc1987 Says:

If he’s on the board at 19. Cook will be a Buc tonight.

  62. NJBucsFan Says:

I’m ok with Cook just not as a first Rd pick…trade back and land multiple picks. Make him your second 2nd Rd pick

  63. feelthepewterpower Says:

Mixon will go in the late first round tonight…..calling it now.

  64. TampaBay AllDay Says:

    That’s two. We’re u @ Joeypoppems

  65. Rob Says:

I’m not sure where you were looking but from what I remember most of America wanted us to draft Winston. Most people knew Winston was the better quarterback. I never met a single person that wanted Marietta over Winston. Just a few guys on the internet

  66. Rob Says:

If I had to but my money I would bet against cook in round one. I think if the two tight ends are gone and the three top wide receivers, he is going defense

  67. Rob Says:

I think he promised this pic to Mike to stay coaching our defense

  68. Kevinthepainterimagine Says:

I think its a stupud move taking a rb at 19….cook is good but hes no Elliot. I will not be one of the ones chearing when.and if they announce that pick but it is what it is. Im sure the guy will be good but in 4 to 5 years I dont see him holding up. whatever it is what it is….rather get a pass rusher.or.if it has to be a running back get the better one in mccaffrey

  69. Kevinthepainterimagine Says:

If it were me id take Perine in the third

  70. Stpetebucsfan Says:

NFL Net talking heads…Steve Mariucci claims there will be at least 3 RB’s taken in the first round tonight with maybe four if Mixon creeps up.

So do the GM’s go for the QB’s early or late…none of these QB’s drives anybody wild. I’ve heard some nice things said about Trubisky and you have to give DeShaun Watson scoreboard….he did it on the biggest stage against the toughest competition. I have a feeling he’s going to be Russell Wilson level successful and so if I HAD to pick a QB I’d have to go with Watson…he’s the only winner on the board.

  71. Joeypoppems Says:

    @TampaBay AllDay

    What? Lol

  72. Joeypoppems Says:

Walterfootball has a rumor that Green Bay is interested in Mixon and they might either trade up in round 2 for him or take him at #29

  73. Stpetebucsfan Says:

    Joey

That’s what I do not understand. If Mixon is valuable…and clearly his talent is…there will be teams take a chance. And so what makes us think he’ll be available when we pick in the 2nd.

  74. TampaBay AllDay Says:

@Joey one more article away bro.

  75. NJBucsFan Says:

If teams are considering taking Conley in the first with pending allegations…Mixon is on the board

  76. Joeypoppems Says:

    @Stpete

You put too much stock into college numbers my friend. Stats that are put up in college don’t translate to the NFL. Sure, it’s nice to see that the prospects were able to have success in college. After that they don’t mean much. Its tough to make a stat based case for a RB this year when the all time NCAA leading rusher, Donnel Pumphrey, will be a Day 3 pick.

To me, Mixon and Cook are like 1A and 1B as far as the Top RB this year goes. Both are 3 down backs with great vision and great pass catching ability. Mixon is a little bit bigger whereas Cook is a little more explosive, which makes sense.

Both are going to be successful whether they broke records or not.

  77. Joeypoppems Says:

Oh lol. There will definitely be one after the Bucs pick. It will be along the lines of “Yay Cook is a Buc” or “Why did the Bucs pass on Cook?!?!?”

  78. Joeypoppems Says:

    @Stpete

Honestly, I don’t think Mixon will be there when we pick at #50

  79. Brett Says:

    (Disclosure)– FSU alum here:

I’d be thrilled if Bucs get Cook, but I am a little scared of the shoulder surgeries and his entourage. He might be better off getting away georaphically if you believe the reports. If the Bucs draft him, I hope they vetted him. He is the best RB ever at FSU (Warrick Dunn, Falcons’ Devonte Freeman, others) and I think he is going to have a huge career.

But wow, there is a lot of depth at RB in this draft. There are 6 or more legit first three round RB’s and if the Bucs pass on him I am good with that. If Joe Mixon is humbled, I am good with the Bucs picking him.

FSU guy (me) thinks Aguayo was a mistake cuz he can’t kick past 40 yards, but otherwise Licht has been solid. Best thing he cuts his losses like ASJ.

  80. Buc1987 Says:

“I never met a single person that wanted Marietta over Winston. Just a few guys on the internet.”

Rob …you didn’t meet that many people then. It was an all out war in here for 4 months over Winston. I met plenty of peeps off the net that wanted Mariotta over Jameis. Fought with them too.

  81. Buccfan37 Says:

Agree with StPete, Watson is the best QB available.

  82. Eric Says:

We heard all that about Jameis, he’s been a model citizen. Where did Mixon grow up? He’s got no hood friends?

Please. Sapp didn’t have hood friends? Give me a break.

The fact is lots of these guys came from the hood.

    Pick Cook.

  83. Joeypoppems Says:

I think if he ends up in the right situation, Patrick Mahomes could be the most successful QB out of this draft. If he ends up with the Chiefs or Cardinals, watch out.

  84. Joeypoppems Says:

Nothing wrong with having “hood friends”. Just can’t be doing “hood things”. Simple

  85. First Down Tampa Bay Says:

I say we go kicker or longsnapper in round one, maybe even placeholer if Licht and Co. see fit. Gotta help Aguayo out! If we find the right special teams pieces, look out!

    Sharpen those pencils!

  86. NJBucsFan Says:

Hooker, Allen, Njoku, Taco or trade down
