Missing on AP a Bucs win.
Despite this being a glorious week for NFL fans, many Bucs fans were in a bitter mood when it was learned free agent running back Adrian Peterson is in serious contract negotiations with the Saints.
It appears Bucs fans who want to see Peterson toting the rock at the Den of Depression (Bucs have to win five home games in a season for Joe to drop that moniker. Is that really too much to ask?) will instead only get to see Peterson do that once a year… wearing a Saints uniform.
Rather than being irritated, Bucs fans should be thankful, said noted CBS Sports and SiriusXM television and radio personality Adam Schein.
On his weeknight CBS Sports Network show “Time to Schein” yesterday, he said Peterson is “shot” and won’t even be the No. 1 running back for the Saints in a pass-first offense.
In a word, he referred to Peterson signing with New Orleans as a “wretched” move and that Peterson will, in essence, be a non-factor.

Actually, given the Saints are here in Tampa for the last game of the season, AP may be long gone from the line-up if he is true to form in his injury tendancies. There is a reason the Bucs passed on AP. Part of it is likely he is indeed shot.

All people guessing here on if he will be a factor or not….have no clue. For a lowly 3 mil, the saints aren’t breaking the bank. Who knows , AP may have another year or too cause if saints smart, he will not be carrying the ball 20-30 times a game like he has his entire year
I can only hope that he is in fact toast. But again for 3 mil , you make that gamble

People insisting that they know AP is done are engaging in nothing more than wishful thinking. AP will be a threat every time he lines up anywhere on the field until the day he retires. He may be finished but there is no evidence of this. Sorry this is not good news for the Bucs.

He will be a threat on paper based off his prime, but when he averages 2 YPC and eventually gets hurt again the threat goes away.

AP will not make a difference in NO. Strictly a “Ticket Sale” maneuver by the Saints. I am sure that AP can probably generate enuf sales to offset his contract, but will simply cost someone a roster spot. Move along….next topic!

Lord C and Pete if you get a minute check out SB*Nation’s Sander Philipse write up titled “Football Outsider Makes case for Dalvin Cook. I think its the best thing I’ve seen written about him. They are using this scale to measure him a scale that only one other RB ranks on the scale with him. Rickey Williams. You came to mind Pete because you had already mentioned Rickey before I came across the write up lastnight.

I dont really know if AP has any left in the tank or not. I kind of want him to do well just so all these arrogant guys look like foools. Acting like they know it all and declare that it would have been a huge mistake to waste Conte type money to bring in one of the greatest RBs of all time to see if he has a year or two left in him. I need to save some of these comments just in case.

The Bucs, if they move on from Doug Martin, need reliability. He missed 13 games last season. He’s only played a full 16 games in the past 5 years, twice. Plus he’s closer to 40 than he is 20, where RBs start to decline once they are over 30.
Yes, he has come back from injury before and yes he is showing a strong desire to still play. However in a league where RBs are not as depended on to carry the entire load as much as they did in the 2000’s or the 1990’s, teams are wise to realize they should draft young RBs and move on from them when they hit 28-29 without having to pay them a third contract when they start to decline.
The Bucs shouldn’t want to sign AP for his legacy, but only want him for what he can offer the team in the here and now. His best years are behind him and the Bucs should go young by drafting a RB in rounds 1-4 in a draft rich with RB talent.

Another weapon on a division foe is not good for the bucs just hope the panthers do not get fournette then have to face 3 division teams with stud qbs and stud rushing attacks to go with it….ol GMC will be high fivin and hugging fournette, AP, and matt ryan after those teams pump statement drives to seal and win games against the bucs

Dav you entitled to yours. I’m entitled to mines. Don’t know how many times I’ve read “first time I’ve ever seen” written by one these scouts or writers in relation to DC. I also find it interesting that in that one in particular they lobbying the Bucs to pull the trigger on him. Go figure.

Jameis said publicaly that he wanted to play with D-Jax and after that the “what Jameis wants Jameis gets” line was all over that article on this site by you and many others, myself included. D-Jax has said that he only talked with Jameis once or twice. Not much of a relationship there. Don’t see how this is any different.

The problem isn’t just giving up 3 mil. You usually only carry what 4 backs? So you have Jacquizz and Sims… Then you have Martin, Barber, Hansborough. So if you bring in AP then you are either not drafting a back anymore and taking two of those three or you are drafting one and only keeping one. If AP isn’t able to contribute much then you just cost a potentially developmental guy for nothing.

idk….this tells me sean payton has something up his sleeve….I think he realizes that the best way to make a serious run at the playoffs is to have a dominate ground game….look what CAR did when they went to the superbowl….same with ATL….both teams had a crazy rushing attack…it wore down defenses and kept their qb clean and healthy (for the most part)….
I think the saints will be dedicated to the run with ingram and AP….that will make brees deadly with his play action….
I think licht made a big mistake not signing AP with the uncertainty surrounding martin and a unproven rookie that we will likely draft….
one things that keeps me optimistic about this whole situation is ATL, NO & CAR trying to run against a healthy dline that consist of big will, c.baker, GMC and ayers….if all 4 are healthy, good luck….GO BUCS!!!!

I think whats up Payton’s sleeve is trading Mark Ingram, especially if AP does return to form. Ingram’s role was already reduced last season because he kept fumbling. Granted, AP has a well known fumbling issue as well.
There will be rumors around the trade deadline about Ingram being moved, unless AP doesnt pan out.

are drew brees jersey sales slowing down? the only benefit the Saints will get from this is if merchandise sales to AP fans in denial about his decline net more than his salary. I am cheering this move because he makes the saints offense worse thanks to his uselessness in the passing game and lack of comfort with being a platoon back. they literally would have been better off sticking with Tim Hightower behind Ingram, he’s a more versatile back who is accepting of a platoon\backup role.
I’m just glad the AP to bucs chatter can end and we will be talking about a new bucs RB with an actual future in the NFL by this weekend

It’s a very odd signing – a running back who doesn’t catch the ball much and is used to running out of the eye, going to the team that passes the ball more than anyone else and seemingly runs the shotgun a ton – not to mention they have a pretty good – not elite but good – running back. Just odd.

Lots of good comments and valid points on both sides of this issue, for me it comes down to this.
If I was AP, you just got dumped by your career long team, same team you poured your heart and soul into. Free Agency comes and goes and just days before the draft you get a suitor in a pass happy offense. During this off season you work your @$$ off because you have basically been humiliated in front of your peers, fans and the world. AP WILL be playing with a chip on his shoulder, HE WILL be playing with a lot to prove. I-F, a very big IF he can stay healthy look out. I see a determination and hunger in his eyes, he may have 1-2 years left, but I see him giving 110% on each every play.

I should have clarified that I was referring to AP being closer to 40 (at age 32.) Doug Martin is 28, my bad for not fully making that clear in my comments.
But yes, if I wanted a reliable backup/insurance policy for Doug Martin I would rather draft a RB with fresh legs rather than gamble on a guy who is injury prone, 32 years old, and even when he was healthy last season was mostly ineffective.
People need to remember that besides the Bucs, there were 31 other teams that passed on AP. I commend Licht for not signing the guy just because of his past career stats and instead looked at what he can potentially offer the team (which is limited since the Bucs are looking for speed and playmakers) being on the wrong side of 30.

I’ve been saying this since day 1. Peterson was a phenomenal RB. Key word, was. Anyone that wants AP, wants what he was, not what he is. Unfortunately AP isnt the same guy he was 5-10 years ago.if he was he wouldnt be going to a team that has little use for him, tbh. I dont see how AP fits in that offense that revolves 100% around the passing game. AP can’t catch or pass block. When he is in, it is a dead give away what they are doing. It would be the same for any team he goes to. With a draft loaded with dual threat running backs, why would you settle for an over the hill, injury prone, one dimensional RB? Maybe if you dont get a guy after the draft then you settle, but not 2 days before it. Lolaints.
