Under The Radar

April 14th, 2017

Speed.

Joe has a hunch, just from college receivers the Bucs have brought in for visits, talked to and worked out, Tampa Bay is looking for speed, speed, speed.

If the Bucs do draft a wide receiver on the second day of the draft, it seems they want a burner who can develop behind DeSean Jackson and quite possibly return kicks.

(The Bucs were dreadful on kickoff returns last year.)

Joe has written about Chris Godwin of Penn State and triple-threat Adoree’ Jackson of USC as possible targets. Here’s a third:

Joe noticed on NFL.com the Bucs brought in Ohio State running back Curtis Samuel. He played some wide receiver in college and is projected as a wide receiver in the NFL. Samuel is a burner who ran a 4.31 40-yard dash. He did not return kicks last year for the Buckeyes but in his two previous seasons, he averaged 21.6 yards a kick return.

Charley Casserly of NFL Network described Samuel as, “Quick to get open, good hands [and] excellent run after the catch.” Casserly also thought Samuel was a third-round, maybe a second-round pick.

If he is fast and he can get open quick and has good YAC, Joe is OK with Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht spending a pick on Samuel.

Godwin, Jackson, Samuel… hell, just thinking about any of these three lining up with Mike Evans and DJax makes Joe want to start tossing beers back on this beautiful spring Friday.

I’m fine with them drafting Curtis Samuel. I just think he is the same thing as Tavon Austin and Tyreek Hill. Nothing wrong with having a weapon like that. However, imo, if we are drafting a WR early this year to be the eventual #2 after Jackson, Samuel would not be my pick for that role.

I’ve never seen so many “Cant Go Wrong,” scenario’s? I am going to chuck my war room in the garbage, grab a cold one, and enjoy this years draft.

  3. tdtb2015 Says:

There is so much talent with speed available in this draft. If our 1st round targets are not going to be available at 19, please trade down! Lets get more picks to get more speed for Winston.

We are going to win the division and go to the championship game with our new FAs. This draft can get us the icing in the cake to go to the big dance.

    In Licht We Trust!!!

  4. d-roca Says:

I keep hearing about samuel so im gona need to find some tape on him. Third fastest player at the combine. The fact he doesnt have a set position is a bit scary but i trust in dirk. He is a poor mans macaffrey from what ive read, but faster. Im all for speed, been saying it for years. Glad we are addressing it finally. The djax signing is a great start. Go bucs

  5. Erik w/ Clean Athletics 'The Kwon Alexander of Bucs fans' Says:

With all due respect to Hump, I would LOVE for us to get Curtis Samuel.

Chris Landry says that the Bucs seem to be targeting an elite-level slot receiver and he says Curtis Samuel is the best one in the draft.

  6. ndog Says:

If we some how come out if this draft with Cook, E ENGRAM (TE Miss) and Samuels then that would complete our offensive skill positions for quite some time. Not likely. but there is outside shot of it happening.

  7. Kobe Faker Says:

Run after catch…slant/short crossing patterns off the LOS to take advantage off the opponents weakest pass defenders….what teams do to us?

Seems like bucfan fans think with Djax our passing game and weaknesses is all cured….think its time for some lessons to raise the football IQ

  8. Joe Says:

With all due respect to Hump, I would LOVE for us to get Curtis Samuel.

Bucs brass absolutely ***LOVES*** Adam Humphries so just going by that, Samuel, even though folks peg him as a slot guy, likely won’t be a slot guy with the Bucs.

    ENLIGHTENMENT#1

Mike Evans and Desean Jackson is the same player

“WTF! Djax is 510 180lbs and ME is 6 5 and 230lbs!” TheBucRealist

Both are deep pattern route recievers. JUST like 2016, the defense will blitz to get to Jameis before the time consuming deep patterns are developed. …NOTHING HAS CHANGED

We need a reciever that can separate at the LOS as a hot outlet reciever on 1st and 2nd down. IKFHO…IN KOBE FAKERS HUMBLE OPINION…Hump has nice nipples, but he cant consistently separate and RAC

…How Important is that position ? Patriots gave a 1st round pick for Cook knowing they even have to give him 14 + mill per season next year

  10. USFBUC Says:

There are a ton of WRs that we could draft to be the eventual replacement for DJax. Samuel, Godwin, Jones, Smith-Schuster earlier in the draft and then a Darboh, Chesson, Owusu, Zamora, Hogan, Davis, Adams type guy to work with later in the draft would be great.

  11. DB55 Says:

    Joe

You just figuring out about Curtis Samuel? Beating the drum for slow-a$$ Michael Clayton looking a$$ Godwin for 4 weeks and you just now figuring out about Samuel? Meh.

Slow ass 10ypc havin udfa can’t break a screen pass but keeping call the same play I’m better than Shep but I’m really not – Humphries. Of course he’s a favorite why wouldn’t he be?

Samuels is what hump is trying to be but never will be. A slot receiver who can make people miss, return kicks and score TDs. The kid is electric and a burner.

Hump would be nothing more than depth behind Samuels.

  12. 813bucboi Says:

he’s a gadget player….and im always a little iffy about gadget players…..Samuel is a great talent but lacks a true position….too small to be an rb….route running and hands aren’t good/consistent enough to be a wr….didn’t play special teams last year….what would his role be?…..I really like zay jones, juju and m.durpree in the 2nd, 3rd round and 4th round….GO BUCS!!!

  13. Tampa Tony Says:

So Ira says don’t read too much into the college visits but the Joes do…

Hard to trust the analysis of two random guys who endorsed Johnny Drunk and called Vic Beasley a bust

  14. Jeagan1999 Says:

I’ve been on the draft Curtis Samuel band wagon for a while now! Samuel has also run the wildcat offense while at OSU too! This guy is a real weapon!

  15. CannonFodder Says:

Kobe Faker labeled Noah Spence as another Vic Beasley last year when we drafted him, too small and will be a bust. Let’s pray Spence busts in his second year like Beasley busted in his 🙂

  16. Kobe Faker Says:

    Gadget player?

    * Taylor Gabriel was the 175 lb addition that took ATL over the top to the superbowl

    ENLIGHTENMENT #2

BRANDIN COOKS is the best offensive lineman for Tom brady and the patriots

“WTF! Brandin cooks is 180lb reciever!” TheBucRealist

2017 Brady to Cook will be seqeal to Brady to Moss

Brady doesnt want another offensive lineman at the scrimmage to have a defender close to him. The fewer the players at the scrimage the better.

Which defense is going to blitz brady in 2017 with Cook, Gronk, Endleman and whatever #2s they have? Blitz and they will dump it to Cook for 30 yarrds

We need a route runner for jameis in the short game

Give #1and #3 pick for Cory Davis
    2nd round D foreman…..

“We will be in the 2017 championship game”

  17. USFBUC Says:

@DB55 I wouldn’t call 4.42 slow, Godwin is faster than most of the other WR coming out this year. When looking at his size combined with his speed and overall athletic ability he is one of the better prospects at the position.

Samuel is a nice prospect too and I wouldn’t be mad if we traded back in the first to pick up an extra second or third rounder so we could take some combo like Samuel, Godwin, Mixon in the second and third rounds.

  18. Wausa Says:

I think there is a very high chance Corey Davis is on the board at 19.

Unfortunately I think Dalvin Cook and Christian McCaffrey will be gone when we pick.

  19. R.O. Says:

I think you are overestimating the year 1 impact of a 2nd or 3rd round WR. Even a 1st rounder….

  20. MadMax Says:

    “Godwin, Jackson, Samuel…”

Very possible!!! Especially if we traded down and landed Obi or a DE. Godwin and Samuel with two picks in round two? Interesting and very possible!

  21. MadMax Says:

I’d love Adoree too, but that would mean trading way back and using other picks to trade back up.

  22. Broy34 Says:

Saw someone say it foreman will be nothing. Dude has more room to run than a farm animal. He doesn’t do anything in his highlights. Perhaps the only disappointing running back in this class if we draft him. Literally will take anyone else. Extremely disappointing Perine aka the best NFL runner isn’t visiting or been shown interest by the Bucs

  23. macabee Says:

    RD4 – WR Robert Davis/Georgia State 6-3,219, 4.44
*Sleeper alert! I found this guy just watching random highlights one evening and was impressed. Robert is a big bodied WR that immediately reminded me of Pierre Garcon. Mid to late round WR with high upside.

  24. Joe Says:

You just figuring out about Curtis Samuel? Beating the drum for slow-a$$ Michael Clayton looking a$$ Godwin for 4 weeks and you just now figuring out about Samuel? Meh.

There is nothing “slow” about Godwin, don’t be dumb.

Godwin is a proven receiver. Right now, Samuel is projected as a full-time receiver.

Samuels is what hump is trying to be but never will be. A slot receiver who can make people miss, return kicks and score TDs. The kid is electric and a burner.

Unless you have spoken with Bucs suits and coaches and they have told you different, Joe has heard nothing but steady hero worship from the Bucs for Rudy for over a year. Unless folks who have never lied to Joe before are all of a sudden conning him, the Bucs have zero desire or intention of replacing Rudy at slot receiver. So if the Bucs draft Samuel, no matter what Chris Landry says — when is the last time he held a job in the NFL? — Samuel won’t be a slot receiver with the Bucs barring Rudy getting hurt.

Seems more than odd a team wouldn’t use Samuel to stretch the field with his speed rather than use him as a slot guy.

You prefer Joe to shut down the site for a month in April? If he did, exactly where would you take your b!tching?

Hard to trust the analysis of two random guys who endorsed Johnny Drunk and called Vic Beasley a bust

So Bill Polian is a clown too? He was high on Manziel. Same with Gil Brandt. But what do those fools know?

Feel free to do some research in the December 2011 free archives of this website. The linebacker Joe advocated the Bucs to draft the following spring is there. (Hint I: He’s on the Bucs roster. Hint II: You probably never heard of him until he was on the Bucs roster, idiot.)

Oh, and how convenient you ignore how Joe wanted the Bucs to draft Jameis. Given the fact you want Jameis run out of town, who is truly the moron here?

“Random guys?” Please feel free to text Joe the next time Joel Glazer decides to have a chat with you. Or Jason Licht. Or Dirk Koetter.

Joe’s got half a mind to block you for being such a ignorant arsehole and a hypocrite.

Come after Joe? Joe will come down on you even harder. Keep it up and pray you don’t catch Joe in the wrong mood.

  26. Andrew Says:

Joe— I understand you say the Bucs love Humphries but that’s because he works hard, does his job, and does things the right way. That does not mean he can’t be the 5th receiver on our team and a special teams guy. He’s great Depth at WR. He’s a walk on and undrafted player. Lacks big time speed and talent. Don’t sell the slot short. No reason to not keep him around but no reason to start him.

  27. Guzzie Says:

Samuel probably won’t make it to pick 50….RB, TE, WR are priority for rounds 1-4

  28. Joe Says:

Saw someone say it foreman will be nothing. Dude has more room to run than a farm animal. He doesn’t do anything in his highlights.

Someone who works full-time in the NFL told Joe the same thing a couple of months ago.

  29. Joe Says:

    Andrew:

Don’t disagree at all. Just being the messenger here. 🙂

There is no player the Bucs defend and advocate for more than Rudy. Talking to Bucs types privately, they gush about him. Very rarely do teams look to replace a guy they like that much.

  30. R.O. Says:

Humphries Lacks Talent? What does that mean? He’s not 6’5″. He can’t run the route tree? Cant catch? Cant Field Punts? Because he doesn’t run a 4.3, he lacks Talent? Steve Largent Lacked Talent, Fred Biletnikoff Lack Talent? Give me a receiver that catches the damn ball over one that can sprint fast in a straight-line any day.

  31. MadMax Says:

I wonder how Ryan Switzer would compare to Rudy….and having two smaller speedy guys aint nothing to laugh at….see NE SB champs last season.

  35. Broy34 Says:

Well Joe atleast we see the same thing when it comes to foreman. If you watch Perine run he’s avoiding tacklers shedding Arm tackles running over and by people left and right. Foreman will be terrible Perine could be all pro. Mixon Cook Mac and fournette probably beasts as well. Love godwins film and I do like the kid in the picture of this article but right now my dream scenario is cook/mcaffrey/njoku/Barnett/peooers round one. Godwin or Samuel round 2 if not peppers round one then obi or Budda round 2 perhaps. Then depending on what happens first two I’m thinking Perine or Kareem hunt round 3. Just don’t want Engram who is way way too small and as me and Joe stated absolutely do not want Foreman. Shows me nothing

  36. Joe Says:

    Broy:

Didn’t say the Bucs should not draft Foreman. Did write you have a good point in that an NFL guy a couple of months ago mentioned to Joe just what you saw.

we need a RAC route runner receiver/te that will open the short middle

Honestly of all the high profile backs Foreman has the most unimpressive highlights by far and it isn’t close. Not really many “wow” plays whereas there are tons with guys like Cook/McCaff/Fournette and even Perine. Perine has some plays where he breaks like 50 tackles it seems and looks like an angry mother f*cker doing it. He’s easily my favorite power back in the draft right now and has proven he can handle a ton of carries. More powerful Michael Turner

Even in Foreman’s highlights he gets ankle tackled a lot or goes down easy when if he could just make that extra guy miss it’d be a special run vs a solid run with great blocking.

Thanks man! Submitted for tons of summer festivals in Colorado so hoping some work out because day festivals are my favorite way to do live music.

We’ll be recording new material next week (2 new singles) and then going to Utah early in June to track a 4 song EP so I’ll make sure to try and promote myself here again when we release it all lol

They didn’t lie, they just don’t know any better. We are not dealing with the patriots organization here, it’s more like the browns.

  42. MadMax Says:

Awesome LC….I know talent when I see it and you guys have that something extra thats different to go along with it. Just need that promotion. You guys are worthy of it.

  43. Lord Cornelius Says:

Kobe I agree my liege – we need that YAC playmaker

Samuel = Percy Harvin without concussions i figure. Totally fine with a weapon like that R2 or R3 and totally fine playing him over Hump.

You’re wrong on Djax being ME tho. Very different WRs… Most of ME’s bread and butter with Winston are on intermediate to deep routes where he can use his size and physicality to box out along with great routes/timing/footwork- but not so much not deep posts / go routes. You could still stack the box last year against us with ME because he won’t get behind most CBs.. and they could stack and double him because we had no other threat.

Good luck stacking the box against Djax. You don’t need amazing protection for Djax to burn you when there’s no S help. Djax can also run the full route tree.. There’s a good tape breakdown showing how he effects defenses and how they have to pick their poison with him. Drop cushion in coverage and he will take an easy 8 yard gain. Play him in on on the line in man and get burnt. He knows how to find space in the defense in a way that ME can’t.

Djax will change our offense before the ball is snapped.

All that said – to really take advantage and go to the next level we need that underneath threat for YAC like you said.

Must’ve struck a nerve with one of the random Joes. If you don’t like the warranted criticism credit who writes which post. Never said I want Jameis run out of town just improvement

Bad form to attack a long time reader even someone who has partaken in your golf tournaments

Dropping cash on golf tournaments doesn’t give you free reign to be an @ss on this site. Don’t push the envelope. If Joe is such a fraud as you claim, why are you even reading any articles? The only fraud is you. — Joe

  45. Broy34 Says:

I said as Joe stated talking about what came prior, then I meant that I absolutely don’t want Foreman. I shouldve put a comma because I didn’t mean to say u don’t want him

  46. Broy34 Says:

Tampa Tony you and maxi pad do nothing but bit$h about McCoy and Winston. And even worse it’s the same post over and over. Never seen so much whining about a 9-7 team ready to break out

  47. Tampa Tony Says:

9-7 that could’ve been more if Licht didn’t rely on a injured Jackson and Jameis didn’t turn it over 20 plus times…

  48. Wausa Says:

    Tampa Tony:
I appreciated Joe calling you out.
You have been overly critical of Jameis. It’s ok to disagree or critical to a point, but just because you have the anonymity of a message board doesn’t make it ok to be a jerk towards others or the players.

  49. Kobe Faker Says:

ME in 1 side and DJax on the other…we need a brandin cooks, hilton, golden tate type player to run havoc in the short middle..5 yard slant/crossing pattern against the 3rd best corner/safety…OMG!

    Wont stop…because we cant stop

Cory davis is the most developed route runner i seen in decades. Size, body position, hands and able to pull away/turn the corner after catch

Me, djax and cory davis? Who could stop us? How many teams have 3 very good corners? Cory davis against the 3rd corner all game long? This is why a 1st round runningback is not needed and never a factor deep in the playoffs in the new NFL

JABOO, ME, AND CORY DAVIS for the next 10 years = 5 superbowls

  50. Blake_bucsfan Says:

No, no. Was actually complimenting you. Seems you may be onto something. Thought it was interesting what you wrote about Foreman, an NFL guy told Joe that couple of months ago.

If Foreman turns into a dud, you may want to start hitting up GMs with your resume. 🙂

  52. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

Joe, c’mon man. Block Tony! Dude comes on your site and is complete a-hole to you. The fact that he constantly bashes Jameis confirms he is an idiot to boot. He adds nothing here so please do what is right!

  53. Tampa Tony Says:

I hate Jameis so much I’m standing about 5 feet from him at local appearance. He’s gonna sign my sons jersey.

Some of you read what you wanna read and just reiterate what the Joes and other writers tell you. I like to take everything into consideration sorry if it comes across overly critical too you soft millennials. But you can give criticism and still wish for someone to do well.

  54. Broy34 Says:

No Joe I get that I was just saying I didn’t mean to word it sounding like u didn’t want him at all

  55. Pickgrin Says:

  56. feelthepewterpower Says:

Samuel isn’t under the radar….but I will tell you guys again who is….and might be the best WR in this class when it is all said and done and that is Ishmael Zamora, Baylor. Similar attributes to both Julio Jones and Josh Gordon….but animal abuse charges and a missed combine has held his stock down and publicity down.

  57. webster Says:

I have heard it/seen it/read it all now. All my life all I have ever heard is in the nfl, they are looking to replace you. The greats like double nickle and ronde barber have said they would go into training camps fighting like udfa because they were afraid of losing their job. Now im reading that adam humphries does not have to worry about competition. Im reading that the bucs love humphries so much that they wont even look to upgrade the slot eventhough it would be very easy to do because no one confuses humphries for steve largent. Oh wait, someone on this thread actually brought up largent while trying to defend humphries. Look I understand alot of buc fans are clueless so i am not suprised if they would not look to replace humphries because they like him. But it would be downright and utterly foolish for management not to look to replace or upgrade the slot if the opportunity presented itself. Liking or loving humphries is no reason to not draft someone if said player is an upgrade and the highest rated player on the board at the time. Its called may the best man win and not may the best man win except for humphries. If that line of thinking about hump is true by the suits as joe says, then we are fooling ourselves thinking we are going to win a superbowl any time soon.
