Jacquies Smith Gets A Thumbs-Down

Jacquies Smith, the highly-productive-when-healthy, pass-rushing defensive end Lovie Smith called “Jack,” is off the radar of the team thinking about thieving him from your Buccaneers.

Smith, coming of ACL surgery in September, is a restricted free agent who has yet to sign his offer sheet from the Bucs.

The 49ers brought him in for a visit and a full exploration last month. However, JoeBucsFan.com columnist Ira Kaufman is Twittering this morning that the Niners will pass on Smith.

Does this mean the Niners think Smith is behind in his recovery? Joe sure hopes that’s not the case.

Joe has no expectation of Smith contributing much this season. It’s unrealistic. However, Joe gets why the Bucs don’t want to throw the 27-year-old to the curb. If he can get healthy through the season, then he becomes a commodity.

Anyone NFL player who can breathe on quarterbacks has a job in the league. And Smith, in limited action, found 6 1/2 sacks for the Bucs in 2014, and seen in 2015, including beating up Drew Brees badly en route to a Week 2 win.

why is this guy in the news. he’s beyond unreliable. flash in the pan similar to a one hit wonder. keeping unreliable players like smith and martin are the types of moves that keep teams in the basement

    ^^^^lmao

  4. Supersam Says:

Jack smith will be great to have back in our pass rush rotation. Can’t have enough rushers.

  5. Architek Says:

This is why Bucs will draft a pass rusher on day one or two in the NFL draft this year.

  6. tmaxcon Says:

    Supersam

don’t you mean it will be great to have that TUB in the training room back when the bucs let the walking injury go

  7. Broy34 Says:

Tmax- dude u need some love. Have u ever commented positively ever

  8. BigPoppaBuc Says:

Didn’t he get hurt on a meaningless special teams play last year? This kid has been very productive when on the field. The fact that he’s been hurt a lot forced Licht to go get some other pass rushers. I like Smith with Ayers and Spence. If Jack can recover enough for a limited roll he’ll make enough splash plays to prove some of these doubters wrong.

  9. Eric Denman Says:

If he wouldn’t have got hurt last year I think he would’ve been productive for us. I think he’s gonna be an excellent rusher opposit Spence on 3rd downs

  10. uckinator Says:

Still need to draft DL in the 1st round. I’ve said many times before; the most important player on the field after the quarterback is the pass rushing specialist. His efforts make the LB’s and the defensive backs all the better !

  11. uckinator Says:

Guess what voted for in Joe’s poll ?

  12. Yungry Says:

Good back up, depth player… Yungry will be answering any draft questions today until 2pm… Tell your friends

  13. Blake_bucsfan Says:

They probably just don’t want to give up a pick to sign him, which I believe would be required due to his restricted status.

i am a realist the bucs have not accomplished anything positive in 15 years. i am always positive. It’s positively reality.

  15. macabee Says:

    Blake,

DE Smith was tendered at original round which was UDFA so no compensation owed if an offer is made. Bucs simply get first right of refusal which won’t be required now. However, April 21 is the deadline for all RFAs to sign tenders. Bucs have only two – Smith and QB Griffin.

  16. Lord Cornelius Says:

Good we need all the D-line depth we can get. yay

  17. martinii Says:

I am really glad we didn’t lose Smith to the 49’ers. One of the dark spots in the Buc’s past have been a few that got away. I can’t sit here and say he will make a comeback next year from his injury, but thats not important. What is is that I can’t say he won’t really step in and help our rotational DL scheme. He is young, knows the system, led the Buc’s in sacks, and deserves a chance to show what he has got. You naysayers would be kicking your collect selves in the a$$ if he would have been picked up by another team and turned in 14 sacks in 2017.

  18. Pickgrin Says:

if Smith plays in 16 games this year – he is as or more likely than any other player on our team of reaching double digit sacks. Torn knee ligaments usually take a full year to heal and sometimes longer. If it was going to happen – its good that it happened in early Sept last year instead of Nov or Dec.

Jac Smith has a lot of want to in him. I wouldn’t bet against him breaking out with impressive play and numerous sacks in any upcoming year that he can manage to stay injury free.

  19. Rod Munch Says:

The guy is a true edge rusher – but thus far injury prone and while he does pile up the numbers when healthy, it’s normally based on a pure speed rush off the edge – he doesn’t bring much else to the game. With that said I don’t get why someone, in particular that runs a 3-4, didn’t offer him a contract considering how low his pay is going to be. Hopefully he stays healthy and is allowed to do what he does best – he can pretty easily I think put up 6-7 sacks again, and for the money he makes, it’s a huge bargain.

  20. USFBUC Says:

Best case scenario Smith plays all next season and shows his true potential and puts up 12 sacks or something similar. His best season he had 7 sacks in 12 games so, a full regular season he projected to have a little over 9 sacks. With a lucky game or two that could easily jump up to 10 or 12.

  21. Captainjimbo Says:

When healthy JS is very impressive. We just need a little luck in the injury depatment and Jameis to take care of the bal and I could see our playoff drought being over. If the draft goes really well who knows what might happen.

  22. Dave Says:

He’d be great in the rotation when/if healthy

  23. Capt.Tim Says:

    He has talent.
Injuries are often just being unlucky.

I hope he stays healthy, and becomes a dominate pass rusher.

  24. Mike Johnson Says:

All the more reason for our Bucs to select a DE in the 1st rd. If we are relying on Smith to be healthy the entire season, we are in sad shape. Let the niners have him..We need a kicka..pass rush peoples!

  25. Jeremy Says:

This kid is like Mr Glass from unbreakable

  26. unbelievable Says:

    he’s incredibly productive when healthy.

Now that’s starting to become a big IF after the last 2 seasons, but damn why wouldn’t you hope this guy could put it all together? He is depth on our DL which we sorely need, oh and by the way he’s actually quite good at rushing the QB.

  27. SOEbuc Says:

Barnett if available in the first. Barnett/Gholston/Ayers/Spence/Jaq? In the words of Billy Madison-“Oh my dear lord.”

  28. Capt.Tim Says:

    SOEBuc

If anybody looks at Gholsten, Ayers, Spence, and Jac
And actually says”Oh my dear Lord”
It will be followed by”Are the Bucs crazy?? You count on those 4, you get the first pick in next years draft!!

Gholsten has no pass rush ability. I like him. But its true. Its damn true!
Ayers is 32. Time stops for no man
Spence. Coming off surgery. Small for DE. We’ll see if he continues to develop.
Jac- cant scare anybody, when you’re in the Cold tub. Lets see if knee is healed

  29. bucNation Says:

why is everybody hating on this guy lol i’m sure you weren’t hating after he had 13.5 sacks in 2 years there’s definitely a place for that kind of production on this team just to build that solid depth and rotation is you don’t remember robert ayers missed some games in the early part of the season and we had to rely on guys like devonte lambert and channing ward who couldn’t even sniff a qb pressure so yea this guy definetly has a place on this team i can bet if he’s healthy he’ll be on the field on 3rd downs
