For damned near a year, Joe got throw out of untold numbers of bars because the bartender(s) and busty Hooters waitresses got sick and tired of Joe b!tching about Bucs receivers.
Joe kevtched, whined, hollered, screamed and slammed mugs of beer telling all who would listen the Bucs needed a receiver. Finally last month, Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht heard Joe’s pleas and went out got DeSean Jackson.
Well done, but job not yet complete.
It was a great first step, but the Bucs need more. Jackson hasn’t played a full season since 2013. Just in case you forgot, if Jackson goes down without any other additional receivers, the Bucs are right back to the crapwagon they were in last year.
It seems Joe is not the lone voice here. Celebrated NFL analyst Andy Benoit for theMMQB.com agrees, as he recently Twittered.
@Andy_Benoit: Even with DeSean Jackson aboard, Bucs should keep eye open for WRs. Jackson not always super reliable intermediate route runner.

That is why Joe is enamored with speedy Penn State wideout Chris Godwin. He seems to be the perfect successor for when Jackson leaves the Bucs, whenever that may be, and could, if he develops properly, be a seamless backup.
Joe looks to last year when Licht signed Brett Grimes and followed that up by drafting Vernon Hargreaves. Licht also signed Mr. Beasting Robert Ayers and followed that up by drafting Noah Spence.
Licht should follow that pattern by drafting Godwin in the second round.

I’ve like Godwin since the combine. Saw him run that 4.42 and went back and watched his game tape (not his highlights) and think he could be a great #2 wr down the road

Nothing new in what I’ve seen all off-season. A bunch of speculation and running into a guy at the Combine or seeing a tweet or getting a sentence or two from Dirk or Jason doesn’t change it: The Bucs will draft a S, then a WR, then a RB…or….a S, RB, and WR. They’d do a LB at 3rd round had Martin not pulled his stunt obviating the RB need completely.. They are not going fix all their woes in this draft, but they can definitely get enough to be dangerous. I’ll go further to expect if they do S, WR, RB this year, it will be LB, DE, TE next year.

Fred E. Buc … Bingo on the Top-3, in no specific order (BPA)! S, WR, RB, DE/DT, TE are all significant needs right now (S & RB probably win out in my book in terms of priorities, ie, starting/key rotational needs, but TE isn’t far behind). Still think Licht will draft an OLineman in there also depending how the BPA shakes out (personally wouldn’t be surprised to see him take one in the Top-3 rnds). Drafting a CB or LB is very probable also IF we garner additional picks through trading down.

Licht will makes us a team worthy of at least the NFC Championship game this year.
I love his formula last year of getting a vet and rookie on the same position. It was golden. So, yes lets get DJackson’s future replacement and have him play the slot until then.

Fred E buc, you don’t have a clue to be able to pick it exactly how the Bucs will. You’re just a fan. Haha…. cracks me up when people get on these message boards and act like they know the whole story, act like they know the best way, etc…. let me guess, your picks here are based mostly on your own bias rather then actual facts and needs for the Bucs, right. I would definitely trust Joe more then some self absorbed fan getting on here telling it how he wants it.

Dalvin Cook in the first and Goodwin in the 2nd and look out for what this offense will be this year.

Actually, it was a great SECOND STEP. People around here won’t believe it until they see it, but Walker will be extremely good. The blind will mock me oointing this out, but my payback will come during the season.

*We need a legitimate #3 WR. Chris Godwin got a strong endorsement from Megatron himself, former WR Calvin Johnson for the job. After a strong pro day, Godwin worked out privately for Bucs assistant wide receivers coach Andrew Weidinger and will pay Tampa a visit this month. He talked about how he likes playing with a QB that improvises or scrambles in play action. Well, we got one of those. Come on down, welcome to the Bucs! My second choice is Zay Jones/East Carolina

*Sleeper alert! I found this guy just watching random highlights one evening and was impressed. Robert is a big bodied WR that immediately reminded me of Pierre Garcon. This guy is so unknown that I added his highlight tape for your evaluation. My second choice is Josh Reynolds/TexasA&M.

I dont see WR as big a need as many on JBF…We already have 2 studs at WR in Evans and DJax…Imho we just need to find solid role players at that position that would complement #13 & #11…

I for one Joe, and don’t get me wrongfDalvin Cook is a beast,would prefer C.Mcafrey in the first round.he would help Tampa out a great deal at RB and WR.when he isnts pounding the rock stick him in there to run some routes. you seen he is very well capable of it.now Cook isn’t as talented in the WR position as MCafrey so he would just be stuck behind Jameis.so would you rather get another guy talented at RB AND capable of lining up as a wideout? Or just a guy that would stick to RB?

I’m not a big penn state or big 10 guy, so I first heard of him performing well at combine. Seems like a very productive guy with poor quarterback. He could he a nice option in 2nd round.

If Cook, McCaffrey and Howard are gone, I like the tape, get Corey Davis or David Njoku, because we have D-Jax and Brate, neither have to play a major role early, I still think Jameis need size to throw to. Don’t think he will make it to our second pick, but if he does… Joe Mixon, 2nd option Marcus Maye or Jordan Willis. 3rd take a flyer on Sidney Jones or Marlon Mack if we don’t get Joe. Bucs have needs but what is really good, no one has to start week one.

Have you looked at Robert Davis (GA State) ….he will probably go in the 4th round. Good size, good speed and scored great at the combine! I’d wait and take him….unless there is a chance to get Curtis Samuel(maybe he falls to the 3rd round) from Ohio St. That guy is ELECTRIC with the ball in his hands!

One last thing about Robert Davis….whom I did not know was a cousin of Panthers Thomas Davis….the AJC here in the Atlanta area ran this article on him a few weeks ago. Interesting comparison between him And Julio Jones.

Don’t understand why you guys are pigeonholing our need to be WR only. In case you fans are unaware this offense is setup to utilize TE and RB in the passing game. We have a need to give Winston Mohr passing option but it’s narrow minded to say that means we need to draft a WR in order to make to offense click.
Last year was a perfect example. When Vjax went down it didn’t mean we were out of weapons. It meant we could go to our hot reads on the tight end and running back. Of course ASJ then got himself fired and then Simms went down and was pressed into an dverydown role. we didn’t suffef just because our end receiver stunk. we also suffered from lack of explosive plays for TE and RB in the pass game.
we have options. Of course receiver is the easiest place to find a pass catching weapon and is a likely draft pick but that does not mean that they have to draft only that position to help the team. they can get the same or maybe even better results if they draft somebody to help Winston from the tight end or running back position. don’t fool yourself into thinking that wide receiver is the only position we have duds trying to catch the ball at

not to mention we ran way more 2TE sets then we run 3wide. And we may actually need to keep Hump on the field because he gets open and gets 1st downs which is more important then splash plays IMO

I’m surprised no one has mentioned taking Sidney Jones if he is available in the 2nd. We will have a huge need at corner next year and this would be the equaivalent of trading a 52nd pick for a top 10 pick next year.

OJ Howard in the first, a bigger faster WR in the 2nd and Mixon in the 3rd it’s as simple as that people. WeaponsforFameis is where it’s at. A great offense and decent/good enough defense is all we need……….and a little love from the fans.

Godwin and Curtis Samuel have been checked out, interviewed, and visited by Bucs three times a piece. They both seem locks to be 2nd round targets. Why no mention ever of Samuels, Joes?

We definitely need to draft a WR. I would go:
1st round: o line or d line
2: WR/RB
3:RB/WR
4: S
5: LB
6: whatever
7: whatever.
Securing the trenches in the first round is a big “need to do” for me. I don’t care which way they go, but continually building up our trenches is a huge need every single year. I don’t care if you really like our O line, it can always get better. It can always use more talent, and it can always use more solid depth. Same thing goes for the d line. You can never have too many good d lineman. Especially with how often you need to rotate them in the Florida heat.

As much as I like Hump truth be told we need a better receiver at 3rd who can help keep defenses from doubling up Evans who IS the focus of our passing game. That’s why another WR is important

Thank you to the people who brought up Robert Davis. He looks like another guy who could really help us. This is such a deep draft class. There are some nice developmental offensive lineman to be had in the fourth and fifth rounds too.
I’m really like the idea of the Bucs trading back in the first to pick up more picks if we can still address our needs later in the first. That said I am also a fan of trading those future picks to get what we want this year too.

I’m liking Zay Jones and Cooper Cupp. Mike Williams is strong but doesn’t run away from many. We already got that in Godzilla13. USF, I’m ok with trading back as well. I’d trade back in the first 3 rounds if there were trade partners, and I know it takes 2 to tango. This might be the deepest draft in a long time. If we could trade down in each round, that would only improve our odds at hitting on picks.

I am also a Cooper Kupp in the third man. I highly doubt Licht is taking a RB in the first, it’ll be McCaffery if he’s still around not Cook. Njoku, Barnett, C.Harris in the first would definitely make my day.

If Davis is on the board at 19 that’s who we should take unless Cook is also on the board. Godwin or Zay Jones in the 2nd. I like Josh Reynolds also – he may be available ion the 4th rd but that’s pushing it probably.
Not the best year for receivers (2014 was) but plenty of good ones available. Which receiver(s) we wind up with in the draft depends on who is available when we pick really.
Other than receiver – the strengths of this draft (Safety, RB, TE) line up really well with our needs.
If we come out of the 1st 4 rounds with a Safety, WR, RB and TE in whatever order – this team will be greatly improved as long as Licht does a good job with his choices.

I live in PA Joe and I see a lot of Penn State games. I’m telling ya there is something special about Godwin. He has a passion foe the game that shows on the field. Has great speed and hands and can make the difficult catches along the sideline. I agree with you and really hope somehow we draft him in 2nd or 3rd rd.
