Eyeing A McCown Return

Calm down. Stay away from bridges, narcotics and sharp objects. The headline is not what you think and fear.
Despite Dirk Koetter being in possession of his dream No. 3 quarterbacks, there’s still room for competition as they slug it out for this year’s No. 2 job. A fourth quarterback on the preseason roster is common. And an intriguing name as surfaced: good guy Luke McCown.
The former Bucs backup (2007-2009) is 34 years old and was just cut by the Saints.
Koetter knows first-hand that McCown isn’t special. Koetter had him for three seasons in Jacksonville (2009-2011), and McCown’s two starts there were brutal in 2011. McCown followed Koetter to Atlanta to back up Matt Ryan in 2012 before he left to sit behind Drew Brees since 2013.
McCown, if he’s willing to sign a non-guaranteed contract, seems like a potentially fantastic pick-up by the Bucs.
He would represent someone America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, can learn from, and he might be better than current backups Ryan Griffin and Sean Renfree. He’s also someone who knows Koetter’s offense, and Koetter seems to like that trait in veterans.
Something to keep an eye on as summer approaches.

Joe don’t rule out the possibility of a Glennon return next year as the long term solution. Considering 8 is on basically a one year deal and will be beat out by the rookie they draft or sanchez most likey no later than week 8 of the season. 8’s likely to be available next year that should please the mob.

I would rather see the Bucs Cut all the practice squad QB that they currently have and only have JW3 as the only QB on the roster!!!!!!!
When the highlight to your NFL career is a wireless carrier commercial you have to ask what is this guy bringing to the table!!!!!!!!

He has a lot more experience than either back up QB on our current roster. Does he have more talent? Since Koetter has already worked with him, if the Bucs bring Luke McCown in, we would then know the answer to that question is – YES.
If not – then NO. We’ll know they like Griffin better.
Griffin could never beat out McCown for the #2 spot when both were with the Saints sooooo….

I expect you to be complimenting young Mr. Griffin after he has a stellar pre season. 8 set the bar awful low for bucs backup quaterbacks especially his horrendous pre-season play but have no fear Griffin will raise the bar. I look forward to reading your glowing reviews of griffin the america’s backup of the future.

there’s a decent possibility that griffin or renfree is a better QB at this point on the field than a guy like luke mccown. however, i’d be willing to bet mccown is far better in the QB room and on the sideline. could see the bucs breaking ranks from their “we love our backups” stance for the right veteran.

Except for one thing tmax, he couldn’t beat out the “terrible” #8. What makes you think Griffin will even be the 3rd QB if McCown is signed?! His depth of experience?!

I had something he said a long time ago and it was posted on my desk that was inspirational and religious at the same time.
Joe Henderson from the Tampa Bay Times wrote an article on Dec 3 2007…. and McCown said in there:
“I think God has a specific plan for me. I lean on his timing, not mine”.

Hold up. Isn’t the purpose for a backup to win games if your starter goes down? The idea is NOT to just plug a hole.
I like Luke, but he was never good enough to even be an effective backup. I would rather skip the veteran presence and go with a new, young QB that goes undrafted. At least then we have a chance of striking gold and gaining trade value.

But he started a game in New Orleans where we clinched the division i think.
Hope were not counting on him.

dominik gave him a big signing bonus only to trade him away for a 7th round pick, he was among many that got signing bonus to no play a single game for the Bucs that offseason.
That is why after 2009 Team Glazer brought in Mike Greenburg to the front office to structure contracts and became team policy for no more signing bonuses!!! all because dominik was so terrible!!!!!!!

And what, exactly, makes you think God is a Buccaneers fan or will become one if McCown is signed? If he’s a fan of any particular NFL team, it would have to be NE! If God likes Tom Brady & NE better than he likes Winston & the Bucs (and McCown) then what possible difference could McCown make with the Bucs?

But you shouldn’t criticize others for doing so. I’ll never understand why some people feel the need to do so. Our faith does nothing to harm others beliefs.
Personally, I hope he is an American Football fan, because I’ll be sorely disappointed if there is no football in heaven…or if its European football.

How many times we’ve seen player praying to make or other teams to make field goals, shot, free throws……players thanking God after championships…..superbowls………the list is endless
This is not a religious debate, but I was just sharing something I thought was cool that Luke McCown said many years.
You don’t have to like it to appreciate it’s authenticity.

well sir… hope you are well but once again you are dead wrong Griffin has been groomed. Like Realist I eagerly await to read and comment on your positive feedback when Griffin steps up and seizes the number 2 job. you won’t hear winston barking during griffin’s reps like he had to when 8 would not correct receivers during his own rep. Joe was on it but i am too lazy to look for link… griffin is your future man get used to it. Griffin has done as much in the NFL the last two years minus one meaningless serious in a blowout.

tmaxcon, Once again you go out and bash Mr. Glennon. WTF is your problem with this guy? He is no longer on our team and yet that is not good enough for tmaxcon. You still are digging at Mr. Glennon every chance you get. Yeah we get it he will never ever be as good of a QB as you think he should be. And yet he got a multimillion dollar offer from the Buccanners and Mr. Glennon decided he wanted a chance to be a starting QB for even more money! Most of us are happy for Mr. Glennon. Most of us but not tmaxcon because he is so much better of an evaluator of NFL talent. He is going to be the next great GM in the NFL and that NFL = Not Freaking Likely. So please please please explain your discust with Mr. Glennon tmaxcon, we would all like to know why you keep on and on with bashing Mr. Glennon.

I like the Vick idea though for Winston but dont think he knows coaches offense so not sure on fit anyway. If you lose your QB1 in NFL, the season is done.

We’d be best served to draft a mid round QB, if the board falls that way. We would have an affordable backup for four years + an opportunity to develop them into a trade able asset.
If Joe believes we are done for if Winston goes down, then why not have an affordable rookie contract with the opportunity to develop at backup QB?
