So has Team Glazer drawn a line in the sand on the 2017 season?
Joe had to ask.
Why? Because nearly all fans have an absolute in their head for the Bucs’ performance.
For some, it’s playoffs or rage. For others, it’s an improved record (10-6) or this season is a failure. Others are content with 9-7 again, simple proof the Bucs are off the roller coaster of NFL Loserville.
At the posh, Joe-can’t-afford-to-sleep-there Arizona Biltmore resort last week, Joe hit Joel Glazer with this concept under a secluded sun umbrella near some lush hedges.
JoeBucsFan.com: Fans and owners get very impatient with losing teams, and there’s also impatience when a team is good. Where’s your patience level after a 9-7 season like last year, one that finished on the rise? Is anything less than playoffs in 2017 a disappointment?
Bucs co-chairman Joel Glazer: No. I like where we’re at. I think we’re headed in the right direction. I think we can compete with anybody; there’s no question. But you can go through a season and lots of strange things can happen that are out of people’s control. And I just think it’s always dangerous to put expectations or a minimum standard on anything. We want to see, we’ve always wanted to see, growth in the team. We want to see growth in our players. We want to see positive direction. We’re seeing all that, and we’re excited about [2017]. But we still have a lot of young players. No question we think we can compete with anyone, as we saw last year. But to put certain thresholds or standards or whatever it is, I don’t like doing that.
Interesting answer by Glazer. Yes, stuff happens in a season. Sometimes, quarterbacks dress as Michael Jackson and then go mental, or radical bacteria infects players, or your offensive coordinator has a heart attack, or two receivers blow out knees in the same game you choke away a 24-0 lead on the Redskins, or your head coach develops ludicrous mancrushes on Tim “Loaf” Jennings and Mike “Toast” Jenkins. There are many other examples.
Joe suspects Team Glazer indeed will have a “minimum standard” on this season. But this isn’t the 2001 Bucs, or Chucky’s playoffs-or-implode team in 2008. Team Glazer will be very patient.
However, Joe suspects the 2018 Bucs will arrive with very clear demands — from ownership to fans.

I very much supported how the ownership under Malcolm Glazer, truly seemed to want to do everything possible to field a winning team. After the Glazer’s bought the United, and after Malcolm’s passing, there were (and still are for many) a lot of questions regarding the wisdom and commitment of some of the Buccaneers ownerships moves.
But after reading Joel’s various comments in the last year or so, it seems he’s growing into his role as owner, seemingly making intelligent, patient decisions.
Good to see.

Basically Glazer said he doesn’t just look at scoreboards alone and actually understands there is a deeper evaluation when it comes to gauging improvement & direction

Strange things is the mantra of this ownership since firing Gruden
-Hiring Raheem and Dominik when more qualified candidates were out there
-Hiring Schiano and not even interviewing Bruce Arians or Mike Zimmer
-Again not interviewing Mike Zimmer when they only interviewed Lovie
-passing on Carr in the draft when we needed a qb
Orginizations take their lead from the top and the Glazer Brothers have hired 3 bad coaches and 1 incompetent GM. Not sure if they know what the right track looks like

I do not disagree with the cost of the Glazers getting ManU and the effect it “once” had on the Buc’s spending and coaching choices.
But those days are past us now and ManU is actually an asset. Hard for me to really criticize the Glazers for putting their entire family fortune (including the Bucs) on the line to try and make their family golden forever. It was risky…they pulled it off so congrats to them on their success. Remember…first and foremost the Glazers are businessmen….they exist to make money…winning more football games generally leads to increased profit so to some degree they are also motivated to win games and make more money.
But at the end of the day no matter how much we dislike it…football owners…coaches…and players are working in a BUSINESS not a sport.
As for this season wishes…it’s time to cut the crap….we want a freaking SB and we should reach Minny in 18. Yeah injuries and stuff can happen to change that…if number 3 goes down early the season is totally different and I get that…but who roots based on potential injuries? Win it all….THIS YEAR dammmit! If we do not win it all we can discuss the failures then…but NOT before the season even starts.

My expectations are always the same. Playoffs or bust. We have the most talented offense we’ve ever had. A franchise QB. A budding Defense. Yes we have a young team that has plenty of experience under their belts now. After years and years of rebuilding, the next step is the playoffs and that should be our only demand. No more excuses. I believe in Jameis!! GO BUCS!!!

Just saw we had Curtis Samuel visit. In general seems we’ve shown interest in a variety of WRs that I personally love if they’re there in R2 (Samuel/Godwin/Zay Jones)
Zay seems like the safe bet to be an elite #2 WR for a decade and could be a #1 for some teams. Godwin has similar upside – maybe a bit more speed even. Samuel = Percy Harvin

I agree with Joel Glazer 100% on this. He couldn’t have given a better answer. The team needs to play up to or above their potential. Look at the Lightning right now, decimated by injuries, yet all the young players fight tooth and nail every game to stay in the hunt. They’re getting better all of the time and the experience being gained will pay future benefits when Stammer comes back. Jeff Vinik is an incredible owner and Yzerman is a genius. The Bucs have great staff and need to stay the course. They will get there eventually but stars have to align and they need depth and good health to make a run.

It’s always disappointing when your team doesn’t make the playoffs. Then they lose in the first round and everyone will be crying if they have to win a game then they win a game and everyone will be crying after make it to the championship game then it won’t be good enough unless they win the Superbowl blah blah blah! I am just trying to enjoy the ride watching Winston in these young guys mature together as a team the draft free agency training camp the whole process and I’ll be proud of him no matter what happens mr. Doing their best and growing

I’ve seen this too many times as well. We didn’t pass on Carr. We drafted Mike Evans at 7. Carr wasn’t going to be picked at 7. He was taken off the board two picks before us in the second round. And, for the record, my dream scenario that I posted here back in 2014 was an Evans, Carr draft scenario. Being said, I’m happy, very happy now, with Winston. Drafting Carr over Evans…. Hard to imagine the future of this team without Mike Evans.

I honestly don’t know my expectations for the season yet. I prefer to wait and see how the rest of the off season goes.
On the surface, I just want to improve. That COULD mean our record…or it could mean in development.
There ARE things I would like to see improve:
Improved Quarterback Play. I’m not knocking Jameis. He;s doing well for entering his third year. But the goal should always be for him to keep getting better. If he doesn’t, well…it would not be a good sign.
MORE SACKS. In my opinion, this is the greatest need on this team. Accomplish it, and the defense will become better over all.
More picks. I would like to see our 2nd year CB with a full grasp of the defense and getting picks. Grimes getting some picks would be great too.
Better offensive Line play, which will open up running lanes and passing opportunities.
And my dream come true?
Be the third team in our division to go to the Super Bowl in as many years.

Still, it was a shocker. Really, Carr was worthy of a first round pick for us. And we could have taken a WR in the second round. Would not have been as good as ME, but could have been good enough.
And maybe Licht would have been more aggressive in the next free agency to get WRs.

I do now remember Bonzai and I hoping he’d fall to us in the 2nd. The Raiders beat us to the punch that entire draft.

Greg Aumen put up the names of local talent coming in for visits with the Bucs. Some interesting names there.
5 USFers, 2 OL, 1 DL a Safety and a LB.
I don’t really know anything about them because I can NEVER find a USF game on TV or to download (I have broadcast TV).
Among the other names, these two stood out to me:
Karel Hamilton (WR) 111 catches for 1,389 yards and 14 touchdowns as a senior. two games with 200-plus yards, two games with 16 catches.
Martin Ruiz (RB) three seasons of 1,000-plus yards for the Penguins. Finished his career with 4,306 rushing yards and 41 touchdowns. He had a 94-yard run as a senior on the way to 1,153 yards on the season

I can only speak for one but I ditched my 45 yard club tix (only including that to emphasize my investment and how p!!!ed I was) when it was obvious to all the course the Glazers took after the Man U acquisition. It was a joke the product they put before us. Those were purely, it only is entertainment days. However their balance sheet has improved and we are reaping the benefits of that and I repurchased season tix three years after that. Go Bucs

Sounds to me like Glazer went with the “no answer” dance on playoff expectation; this does not surprise me. He needs to get some Jerry Jones in him…and expect nothing short of playoffs every year. Malcolm expected playoffs…his sons…not so much.

If the Glazers want to impress the fans and show us you really care about the real fans, put a sail shade or ETFE type roof (see Vikings) on that stadium at your expense that you play in for free and collect every Buc penny from since it opened.
Second, stop charging us a 500% markup rate for concessions. Bonus would be to allow the lunch trucks (that work downtown and do well) space on premise to add variety.

If you’re not playing for the playoffs, for the glory of being Stupor Bowl champions then why bother? Just the same the fans want the playoffs every year so there’s always expectations. Last year we beat teams that in all fairness should have beat us and we went 4-2 in our division so the only real improvement is an 11-5 season and the playoffs. Anything less IS unacceptable. The ball bounces any which way but good teams make it bounce their way.

Anything less than playoffs would be a disappointment. With the additions of Deshaun Jackson, Chris Baker and along with this years draft picks, you would think the team would be much stronger now however there are some potential issues with depth that could effect the run to the Super Bowl. Without Alterraun Verner and Vincent Jackson we are one injury away from using UDFA’s as starters. Without Verner that leaves us with Jude in nickle and without Jackson Humphries is our number three receiver. Not to mention the need for a LB and kick/punt returner. If Corey Davis or John Ross fall to 19 we should jump on them. As far as CB goes there are some talented players available in the second round like Cordrea Tankersley, Clemson, Adoree Jackson, USC or Teez Tabor, Florida.
