Dirk Koetter Scored His Dream 3s

April 2nd, 2017

Targets acquired

Despite a decimated defensive line for a chunk of 2016, and a messy, injury-riddled year at running back, winning Bucs coach Dirk Koetter has had his share of big blessings since arriving in Tampa as offensive coordinator.

First, the Bucs dropped America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, in his lap in 2015.

Scoreboard!

Mike Glennon already was one of the NFL’s best backup QBs, and Koetter delivered a wish list at No 3 quarterback to his general manager.

Those wishes came true, Koetter explained to Joe and other media at the NFL Owners Meetings last week.

Never-thrown-a-regular-season-pass Mike Griffin and Sean Renfree will battle for this year’s Bucs’ backup quarterback gig. Griffin spent the last two years with Tampa Bay, and Renfree was with Koetter in Atlanta.

They were objects of Koetter’s desire two years ago.

“The truth of that whole story is when I came here, I was telling Jason [Licht] that there was two quarterbacks, if they ever came available, we want to get them in,” Koetter said. “We knew we were going to draft Jameis and we had Mike Glennon, but knew we were going to be losing Mike. And the two quarterbacks that we always had our eye on, and at that time were [number] 3s in the league were [Griffin and Renfree] and now we have them both.

“I think in both of those guys’ case, they haven’t had their chance; they haven’t had their opportunity yet to prove when the money’s on the line if they can do it. It’s one thing to go through offseason program, go through preseason playing preseason, but you never really know how a guy is going to until he’s doing it in a real NFL game.

“Some guys have had their chance and have proven they can do it. Other guys have proven then can’t do it. These guys haven’t had a chance to prove that yet.”

Yes, Joe knows the Bucs danced with Nick Foles’ agent this offseason, before Foles returned to the Eagles.

But Koetter is a quarterback guy, and he has spent two years each with Griffin and Renfree. That means something, even if Renfree was out of football in 2016.

Sure, Joe would prefer a better backup quarterback situation, but there may not be one available now. At least Renfree and Griffin know the offense extremely well.

    Ok

The NFL’s best back up quarterback? Ooook

  3. SteelStudBuc Says:

I’d welcome RG3 as a backup at the right price

  4. Dewey Selmon Says:

Hopefully neither one sees the field unless it’s mop up.

  5. Supersam Says:

Our backup quarterback situation is worrisome at the least. I’m hoping we take a chance on Josh Dobbs. Some are calling him this years Dak Prescott, and he has ties to Mike Bajakian

    @SteelStudBuc

Why? If Jameis gets hurt then RG3 plays. When RG3 plays he will get hurt almost immediately. So we will be right back with Ryan Griffin anyway lol.

  7. Defense Rules Says:

It’ll be interesting to see which one Dirk Koetter keeps. For right now, my money’s on Ryan Griffin. Bucs must’ve seen something quite special in him to keep him on the 53-man roster for almost 2 yrs.

I must be crazy, because I’m not worried about this situation. Would everybody feel better if they had signed someone like Mark Sanchez for a couple million dollars per year? Personally I prefer the unknown to guys that I already know can’t cut it when the clipboard needs to be put down and the helmet needs to go on.
Some of these things I guess you just have to trust the organization on when none of us have ever actually been in the class room with these guys.

  9. JameisDungy Says:

Why didn’t the Bucs try to get EJ Manuel? He’s making less than a million dollars.

  10. BigHogHaynes Says:

KAPP, bring him in and as they say let him compete with these two guys that Coach K seems to like so much, the pressure from competition will burst a pipe!

  11. AceofAerospace Says:

No laughing here Joe. This time of year, I’ll take any buccaneer story, even ones about backups. Feed me Joes. I’m starving.

  12. Dewey Selmon Says:

If the qb from Tenn or Miami falls to 5th or 6rd I would consider a gamble, my money if on Griffin.

  13. Buccanegro Says:

    Kaepernick and Mike Vick

  14. Trubucfan22 Says:

Im really not worried about back up QBs. Like koetter said, we dont know what these guys can do. Either one might turn into the next Brady, Romo, or Warner etc. the other “veteran back ups” we all know can’t be NFL QBs. So why waste a ton of money on guys who we already know suck?

  15. SteelStudBuc Says:

    @Joey…. play on 3s

  16. Trubucfan22 Says:

I have no more faith in nick foles than i do ryan griffen. While i think. Ick foles is a decent QB and what one mighr consider an upper teir back up. He is still a back up. Meaning he is not good enough to win games in the NFL. If he isnt good enough to be a starter what gives anyone the idea he could step in and lead us to the playoff if winston went down? As i said, there is a reason he is a back up and not a starter.

  17. BradentonBuc Says:

If wintson goes down, does anybody expect this team to go anywhere? Realistically speaking, we had a luxury with Glennon but that was steeped in familiarity and a hope that he could translate his performance with a half-ass team into a much better outing with a team worth a damn, yet we forget why the ONLY reason why he Bucs offense was relevant was because Winston was running the show and elevating the play of everyone around him. He’s that good and he’s that young which is what makes him such a phenom. I am completely comfortable with Ryan Griffin because sanz Matt Ryan who else knows this offense better?

  18. David Groover Says:

Coach Dirk hasn’t given me any reason not to trust his judgement so far so if he sees something in these two guys then im giving him the benefits of doubt lets wait to see what they can do in pre season before we rush to judgment (in dirk i trust)

  19. RawBucFan Says:

Blaine Gabbert will be signed by the training camp starts.

  20. DallasBuc Says:

Don’t know the stakes but seems silly to count rubles in the negotiation for a Foles to back up Winston.
Hasn’t Foles beaten us a couple of times in his short career?
Red flag not even in the ballpark for his services.
    Smells…

  21. Buccaneer scotty Says:

It’s going to be a LONG month 😨

  22. Tattoodonny Says:

EJ Manuel? Really? That guy couldn’t hit the opened doors of a Barn! He & Jameis might have known each other but let’s be real, he stinks. To bad we missed out on Chase Daniels he’d been a great backup for Jameis. Working with Sean Payton, Drew Brees & Doug Peterson he could have helped Jameis. I’m expecting our GM to make some type of trade for extra picks & he’ll draft a young QB.
