Dirk Koetter Talks Adrian Peterson
March 29th, 2017Parked at the NFC Coaches Breakfast in Phoenix, winning Bucs coach Dirk Koetter flashed his biggest grin of the morning.
It came just after Joe asked Koetter what he thought of America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, training with Adrian Peterson this week.
(For those who missed it this morning, it’s all linked here, Jameis and Peterson — Mike Evans and DeSean Jackson, too — spent extended time working with Peterson and everyone looks like a happy family.)
First, Koetter laughed and smiled.
Joe followed up to ask Koetter whether he’d be intrigued enough to bring Peterson in for a workout just to see, especially since now he’s got a relationship with his quarterback.
“(laughs) Well I’ve seen Adrian Peterson many times (laughs). The guy’s one of the best running backs to ever play,” Koetter said. “So, (Koetter then paused searching for the right words) I’m anxious to talk to Jameis and ask him about how his workouts went.
“That caught me off guard. I didn’t know that [Jameis and Peterson] were together. I’ll be honest with you. The first thing I thought when I saw that, Jameis is such an amazing guy. I mean, the guy is everywhere. He’s working with Tim Grover, who is Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant’s trainer. He goes to Houston to get the [Bucs] receivers together to throw with them. When Jameis is [Tampa,] he’s calling up local college guys to go over and throw with him at Skyway Park.
“I’m just thankful every day that we got Jameis Winston on our time. The one guy that will be ready to roll on April 17 is Jameis Winston.”
So what kind of report on Peterson will Jameis deliver to Koetter and Jason Licht.
Joe’s not lobbying for Peterson, who just turned 32. But Joe is not underestimating Jameis’ influence. Joe does believe Jameis has enough juice to get the Bucs’ brass to take a second look at anyone.

“I’m anxious to talk to Jameis and ask him about how his workouts went.”
Jameis…Tampa’s best scout.

Pardon the nerdom but I feel AP is the Luke Skywalker of the NFL. He might be old and forgotten, but tell me having Luke Skywalker on your team is ever a bad idea.
March 29th, 2017 at 12:52 pm
I have a feeling some team is gonna get AP cheap and he’s gonna dominate
March 29th, 2017 at 12:53 pm
1 year deal with AP wouldn’t hurt anything…
March 29th, 2017 at 1:01 pm
Joe what did I say in your previous post….Jameis is the one working AP to report back to Dirk and Licht. Who better to work out a player than your franchise QB? Ima go on record and say it now.AP to Tampa on a 2yr deal worth 16mil with 10 guaranteed.
March 29th, 2017 at 1:13 pm
Tampa Tony – as more time goes on I think you might be right
March 29th, 2017 at 1:14 pm
2 year 16 mil? NEVER going to happen imho … one year and 6-7 mil is far more likely I believe … but … it does seem Tampa is the odds on fave to sign him now as no other team seems all that interested and there’s only one team with a legit “inside track” and that’s the Bucs now
March 29th, 2017 at 1:16 pm
Also, I think if the Bucs draft a RB that is more of a receiver or finesse back, such as Christian Mac, Hunt, Mack, etc., they may take the one year flier on AP as even if he’s only a goalline and short-yardage back he will add value … but if the team drafts Dalvin Cook, Perine or Foreman I think they pass on AP altogether …
March 29th, 2017 at 1:17 pm
Lol Bonzai, Jamesis our best scout.
March 29th, 2017 at 1:18 pm
I don’t think a lot of people realize how AD plays when he has people doubting him. That guy is a freak. I don’t care how many RB’s have struggled at his age. He’s not a regular RB.
March 29th, 2017 at 1:19 pm
I’m max faded at my grandma’s house
And leave your clothes over there, that’s grandma couch
I be filmin’ her friends too, yeah I’m back on that
Double D chicks huggin’, I got racks on racks
Like, I don’t want the luxuries of a superstar
I’m just tryin’ to chill with Miley at the hookah bar
You like cartoons? I’ll make your heart melt
With the seat back, playin in the back, like
I like it like that!
Hey windows down, chillin’ with the radio on
I like it like that!
Damn, sun’s so hot, make the girls take it all off
I like it like that!
March 29th, 2017 at 1:22 pm
I’d take a gamble on AP in a heartbeat. He’s a game changer.
March 29th, 2017 at 1:22 pm
All the people that want AP, please look at the history of 32 year old RB in the NFL. THE HISTORY!!!!!!!!
Then look at production of 33 year old RB in the NFL
FATHER TIME IS UNDEAFETED.
March 29th, 2017 at 1:25 pm
Doug Martin is a serious if. Sims sucks and drops passes in clutch times that cost them games. The other guy, well does anyone even know his name. Yeah we need a good RB. I like McCaffery over Cook.
March 29th, 2017 at 1:35 pm
@Reginald Gray,
Didn’t seem to bother Frank Gore last year. I’d venture to say AD is better than Gore.
March 29th, 2017 at 1:37 pm
BigMacAttack, Sims will have to take a huge leap forward this year if he hopes to prove himself, so I agree on him.
I also agree about Martin. But signs are leaning toward the Bucs keeping him. They can cut him any year they want now, so giving him a year only costs a years salary in a year when we are having trouble meeting the cap minimum.
Quiz is an up and comer who has not found a ceiling yet. This is his prove-it year too.
March 29th, 2017 at 1:39 pm
Hawaiian Buc Says
“I’d venture to say AD is better than Gore.”
Who is this AD you speak of?
😉
March 29th, 2017 at 1:39 pm
Make AP a Buc
Make Mixon a Buc
March 29th, 2017 at 1:45 pm
AD is Peters0n’s nickname …
March 29th, 2017 at 1:47 pm
AP on the Bucs and have him with our new RB (MacC or Mack)? Heavenly! A mentor and playing..WOW!
I want him!! Like NOW!
March 29th, 2017 at 1:50 pm
I don’t want AP and I don’t want Mixon
I want us to either draft Dalvin Cook or Christian McCaffrey in the 1st
March 29th, 2017 at 1:55 pm
I say we give AP Doug’s money plus a bit and roll with him. We could be very pleasantly surprised with the results.
March 29th, 2017 at 1:59 pm
The continued fascination with AP makes no sense to me. If the Joes were running this team, we’d have a bunch of over the hill guys, the cap would be busted, and they’d go 5-11 every year.
March 29th, 2017 at 2:00 pm
FRANK GORE barely got a 1,000 yards in 2016 and he wont crack 1,000 yards in 2017
like I said FATHER TIME IS UNDEAFEATED FOR 32 YEAR OLD RB
March 29th, 2017 at 2:11 pm
i would like to get AP then draft Mixon. AP take him under your wing for a year
March 29th, 2017 at 2:13 pm
A 32 year old Fank Gore is better than any of our RBs on our team
March 29th, 2017 at 2:23 pm
I say get Peterson and also restructure martin’s contract, draft some
huge dominating o-line monster to beef up and dominate run blocking with that first pick. Who’s gonna stop that? Rotate the number 1 and 2 rushers from two years ago. How quickly people forget people’s potential. The league and the fans are so stupid and fickle it has always baffled me. These guys both play extremely well with something to prove. They’re gonna be motivated to play with deshaun, and Evans. Jamie’s is a positive influence. Keep it like family. Help Martin and AP to be their best. Coach never uses split back sets, which would be great with sims. He’s very good but not used properly as a weapon. Everyone knows when his third and long screens are coming. Put Barber on the practice squad for when needed. Wish I was GM
March 29th, 2017 at 2:24 pm
Sign AP. Draft Christian McCaffery and use him as a kick returner as well as an occasional wide receiver and running back. Then, when AP retires or is cut in a year or two, McCaffery can take over at RB.
March 29th, 2017 at 2:47 pm
I don’t think you can look at last year and say that’s who he is. 2014 He ran under 30 times for like 75 yards. Then he came back the next year and went off. Ever time he has had a seasons worth of carries as a sample size he has had over 1000 yards and 12 plus or more touchdowns. Really don’t think we have anything to lose by bringing him in and it doesn’t change our draft really given his age
March 29th, 2017 at 2:56 pm
Why not sign Peterson? If Martin isn’t coming back his salary will more than offset what AD gets – and pair AD with a high draft pick that can learn from AD and you’re in great shape since even if AD is a shell of himself you have someone ready – and if AD is great, then you’re not putting mileage on your prized rookie. I don’t see any downside of signing AD unless he wants crazy money AND multiple years guaranteed.
March 29th, 2017 at 2:56 pm
First of all, nobody calls him AP. It’s “AD”, as in “all day”. Second, saying Gore only had 1000 yards is kind of funny, since we didn’t have anyone in the vicinity of 1000 yards last year. If AD “barely” gets 1000 yards, that would be a successful signing. Nobody is saying he will be the AD of 10 years ago, but he doesn’t have to be. This is Jameis’s team, but it sure would be nice to have an explosive, proven player out of the backfield. When he is healthy, AD ALWAYS produces. He didn’t have a great year last year, but he didn’t play much and Minnesota had all kind of issues on the OL and at QB. He’s known as a very hard worker and great teammate, so there’s no reason to not consider him for a one or two year deal.
March 29th, 2017 at 3:35 pm
People seem to be missing the real story here: Time to head to skyway park during lunch breaks for a sneak peak of next year’s offense
March 29th, 2017 at 3:49 pm
Yeah 87 u can stop with the lyrics anytime 🙂 u got props once for a song. But I prefer English as opposed to terrible rap lyrics that have no sense of the topic
March 29th, 2017 at 3:51 pm
Now there is a pic of Peterson hanging out with Jameis and desean Jackson and mike Evans with the Houston rockets players. Am I still crazy everybody??? Lol. Like I said a while ago bucs will sign Peterson after the draft and he will be playing for the bucs in 2017. Go me and go Bucs!
March 29th, 2017 at 4:01 pm
The Bucs did look awful cuddly with Peterson in that Photo
Doesnt matter what we think. If Jameis thinks hes still got game, and talks AP
Into signing
Then thats whats gonna happen
Pretty obvious that Jameis is done with the undependable muscle hampster
Looks like hes campaigning for Cook and Peterson.
March 29th, 2017 at 4:04 pm
AD would be cheaper than the Revis rehab event. Both riding on the past looking to sucker more millions one last time. I hope the Bucs pass on him.
March 29th, 2017 at 4:15 pm
Why not a one-two punch of AP and a highly drafted rookie? Think Titans and Murray/Henry. We apparently run a very similar offense to Titans.
March 29th, 2017 at 4:22 pm
I’ve been against signing Adrian Peterson ever since the First Take appearance. I just don’t think he will bounce back the way people expect him to. Father Time is undefeated.
With that said. I will naturally get hyped up if they do sign him lol.
March 29th, 2017 at 4:22 pm
Broy…Hot Chelle Rae’s not rap. lol
I call it Lyric Graffiti. There’s actually a lot of thought that goes into it. lol
March 29th, 2017 at 5:40 pm
I would certainly not shed a tear if we signed a surefire 1st ballot Hall of Famer. AD is a stud and I would not even question his ability to come back and tear this league up. He’s done in before when the “experts” doubted it was possible. My preference remains with Dalvin Cook in the first round or maybe even McCaffrey if Dalvin is gone but if neither materializes AD would be a fantastic signing and it’s looking like he could be talked down from his asking price.
March 29th, 2017 at 5:43 pm
One year six or seven million dollar prove it deal. Or nothing
March 29th, 2017 at 5:49 pm
Rather use the roster spot on a young player with upside than an old player on the way down.
March 29th, 2017 at 6:03 pm
Peterson on his way down is better than most young players – and definitely better than Dougie on Molly.
March 29th, 2017 at 6:36 pm
AP will be playing with a chip on his shoulder after being cast away…..a very big chip.
March 29th, 2017 at 7:05 pm
Patriots got 3200 yards, 37 TDs, and a ring with Corey Dillion from age 30-32.
Corey Dillion, even at 32, was still better than 4 yards per carry and scored 13 TDs.
After Dillion was done, Bilichick brought in Fred Taylor for 2 years, at age 33-34.
Peterson > Dillion
You think you’re smarter than Bill Belichick? Rockstar Dominick thought he was. Blount for Jeff Demps, the 2nd worst trade in recent NFL memory!
(right behind trading a 1 and a 3 for a CB with a bum knee and a $16 mil contract)
March 29th, 2017 at 7:13 pm
Sign A.P, restructure doug martin and we also have Smith…..zero need to dradt a rb thi s year with those three guys. Draft a guard as insurance for sweezy and maybe take a rb in the fifth after wr, cb, saftey.
March 29th, 2017 at 7:17 pm
Sounds like AP will be a Buc if Jameis gives his approval. At least we would finally get rid of the Molly poopin’ Martin.
March 29th, 2017 at 7:19 pm
Too many talented RBs in this draft to not get one of them. We are building for the future and you can’t do that with guys around 30. We have enough vets now we need so more young studs to build with.
AP would replace Martin and would be the perfect mentor to our new RB and Peyton as well.
March 29th, 2017 at 7:44 pm
I’d be OK with AD at a reasonable prove it contract with incentives just as long as they also get Cook in the first round. We are moving our RG to Center in training camp–which will give us a lot more push up the middle and Sweezy will play RG and will be a road grader too there. We need our LG to play his best position–RT, and backup Smith has played well there at LG before and should take over there until we can get a true LT next year and move our present LT (Smith) to LG which is his ideal position. If we do the above we will be good enough to beat anybody.
March 29th, 2017 at 10:04 pm
It doesn’t matter if any of you are OK with AP! It matters if light and the rest of the bucs organization is okay with a AP,AD period . Go Bucs (Winston)
March 29th, 2017 at 10:09 pm
McCaffery.
