Jason Licht Talks Draft Balance
March 28th, 2017When trying to predict what college players the Bucs will select next month, it’s easy to ignore the fact Jason Licht drafted 12 offensive players versus one defensive player through the 2014 and 2015 NFL Drafts.
Is that a factor? Will it matter next month?
Last year, Licht drafted four defensive players, two offensive players and a kicker that cost Joe’s hairline at least two inches. So Licht’s career draft tally is 14 offensive players versus five defensive players.
Joe asked Licht yesterday whether that imbalance matters in his approach to the draft.
“It can’t,” Licht said. Each year’s draft must be about internal team assessment and the evaluation of prospects, he said. Need is always an element of every draft so the process should balance itself, Licht said.
Of course, teams that finish 9-7 (and 6-2 in their last eight games), already have a level of healthy balance across their roster.
“I don’t think you’re going to see us taking seven players on one side of the ball this year,” Licht said. Hopefully, we can distribute, but even if we don’t, then we still have other avenues to add to the team.”
Joe thinks 2017 will be Licht’s most balanced draft yet.
The Bucs need to walk with a receiver, a running back and a dangerous returner, and they probably want more depth at tight end, but there are also depth concerns at cornerback and along a veteran defensive line, in addition to the need for a safety with potential higher than that of those currently on the roster.
March 28th, 2017 at 2:38 pm
So pretty much every position besides QB, K, and P.
Just hope they dont take a RB in the 1st
March 28th, 2017 at 2:39 pm
Good analysis Joe.
It’s unfortunate we have such a glaring need at one position(running back)
but we are lucky in that there is a decent chance either Dalvin(first choice) or McCaffrey are available in the 1st when we pick.
March 28th, 2017 at 2:40 pm
Three on Offense…..Three on Defense and one trans.
March 28th, 2017 at 2:45 pm
Even before the 2015 season per the NFL.com the bucs had the worst group of running backs in the NFL:
32. Buccaneers: Doug Martin, Bobby Rainey, Mike James, Charles Sims, Dominique Brown
Now in 2017 we are even worst

I still see us picking Offensive heavy. Pick 19 can be anything from either side of the ball but I still see 3 offensive picks within the first 4 rounds. Rb, WR, TE are all very likely within the first 4 or 5.. if picks 5-7 are defense I still wouldnt call it balanced, those are the rounds where guys may not even make the squad.
March 28th, 2017 at 2:59 pm
Really hope DE is up high on Lichts needs list. We are an abomination at creating QB pressure.
March 28th, 2017 at 3:01 pm
No way. We got a decent running game.
March 28th, 2017 at 3:01 pm
What Ive been thinking for them in my mocks is pretty balanced. A DE like Barnett or Solomon…a safety like Obi….a WR like Zay…..a RB like Perine……a CB like Kazee…then O line and that big TE from the small school you talked about yesterday.
March 28th, 2017 at 3:17 pm
WR, S, RB, TE, KR, QB & CB
March 28th, 2017 at 3:20 pm
The Bucs have a solid core, but lacking young playmakers. Guys that can take the ball away, ghys that can put solid pressure on QBs consistently, and young offensive playmakers not named Mike Evans.
Take your pick, this draft has all of the above. Deficiencies that remain after the draft can be pieced together with veteran free agents.

GO BUCS!!!!

Bucky Brooks got crucified for suggesting Jarred Davis to the Bucs in the first.
March 28th, 2017 at 4:35 pm
No way we take a LB in the first. I think we go WR or DL in the first depending on who is available and where they are on the Bucs draft board.

Tough to figure out the draft with so many moving parts. Don’t forget another way of obtaining players; You can pick up a decent OL, RB, safety, when the teams cut down on the final roster at the end of August. There are a lot of tough decisions made with 2 equally good players on the bubble. I would equate that to a 4th round draft pick or better (Why ?) Because they already have experience with a track record you can examine. You can eliminate all the head cases.
March 28th, 2017 at 4:42 pm
I should also add, these players will be highly motivated !
March 28th, 2017 at 4:44 pm

March 28th, 2017 at 4:59 pm
Excited to see what the Bucs do this draft. For the first time in a long time they seem to know what they are doing.
Looks like our GM plans to draft certain players he really wants and spares no expense to get the guys he strongly belives will help the team. Feels more confident as a fan to have a GM that has a definite plan………rather then prior years where it felt more-or-less like they were throwing darts at Mel Kipers Big Board.
The trades are fun too
March 28th, 2017 at 5:02 pm
Joe, why are my post being monitored and removed? I for the most part treat others with respect here. I can always get my information elsewhere if you are singling me out for some reason.
March 28th, 2017 at 5:09 pm
@rayjay….he’s way more than just a linebacker….VERSATILITY IS KEY….GO BUCS!!!!
March 28th, 2017 at 5:21 pm
Joe says:
“they probably want more depth at tight end”
“the need for a safety with potential higher than that of those currently on the roster”
LOL contradict yourselves much? Joe has written multiple articles saying that TE and better safety talent are not needs and thus won’t be addressed this year – despite the fact that even Ray Charles can see the Bucs have real need for upgrades at both positions and that this is the strongest draft in many many years for both TE and Safety talent.
March 28th, 2017 at 5:32 pm
Yeah but do the Bucs have to upgrade the TE with somebody who has great recieving skills? Cause those are rare and will be very costly. Otherwise it is not too hard a position to fill.

March 28th, 2017 at 5:42 pm
Long way to go for any football SB. 4 months until training camp and 5+ months until actual games.
The Super Bowl is always bittersweet. Its the biggest game of the year, but unless your team wins, its a long 7 months for 31 teams who want another crack at that Lombardi trophy. I doubt this is our year to win it all – but with Jameis Winston, anything is possible so hope springs eternal. At least it feels like we should legit have something to cheer for and look forward to this football season…

Don’t be surprised if the Bucs draft Peppers and move him to Sam. Think Mark Barron.

March 28th, 2017 at 5:54 pm
DEFENSE first 3 picks… does no one remember needing one win at the end of the season and our defense folding like a blanket? No pass rush at all… RB later in the draft… need play makers on the other side of the ball! 2 of the top 5 offenses didn’t even make the playoffs last year.
March 28th, 2017 at 5:56 pm
Obi
Godwin/Engram
Mack/Hunt/Perine

“The Bucs need to walk with a receiver, a running back and a dangerous returner, and they probably want more depth at tight end, but there are also depth concerns at cornerback and along a veteran defensive line, in addition to the need for a safety with potential higher than that of those currently on the roster.”
Personally, I think they can skip WR and make do. Also, I think RB is a secondary need. Licht seems to find decent RBs off the street. As to WR, they’ve added a couple good ones. I don’t think Koetter cares so much about a speedy guy there, not as much as fans do.
Tight end? I can see going after one in the first few rounds…maybe. Brate is great, but Stocker is always unhealthy. So they need a good blocking one. However, you can get that in round 4 or later.
To me, the biggest needs on offense are right tackle and center (unless Hawley is finally healthy; which I doubt).
As to DEFENSE, I would say the biggest need is now Safety to replace Bradley McDougald, because Wilcox is nowhere close to being as good. McDougald was getting better each year, but he wasn’t great yet (I think this would have been his big year). Wilcox is barely half as good, and is already past his ceiling. Therefore…we NEED to replace McDougald still.
And the next most important needs on Defense are defensive end and another cornerback.
Next year, if Lavante David doesn’t start playing better, we may have to replace him. He’s had 2 down years in a row. Excuses for that can be made, but not if it turns into 3 bad years.
March 28th, 2017 at 5:58 pm
Yeah Dom they choked. LaVonte David is a no-show stiff and our line looks like boys against men still.
March 28th, 2017 at 5:58 pm
Cobra boy, it’s not a bad plan……if we got Peppers in the fourth.
They’re not drafting a hybrid LB/S in the first round. Peppers is an option, but only if they are 100% on his being a safety. Ala wayyyyy more than Barron
March 28th, 2017 at 6:04 pm
@pickgrin i think the inconsistency in the messages comes from the fact that their are 2 Joes who don’t always agree.
March 28th, 2017 at 6:08 pm
I think they should go after another good ole boy in the first round. Worked nicely the past 2 drafts.
March 28th, 2017 at 6:30 pm
Bonzai I almost disagree with everything lol
1- I believe Wilcox could easily be an upgrade over McDougald. But I personally was never high in McDougald in general and would probably point to him as the weakest starter by far on defense if everyone was healthy.
2-I don’t think we can skip WR and make do. Our depth is terrible CFL star or not. I don’t think it’s a huge need where we have to address it R1 but if Djax goes down and we have to start Rudy Humphries outside as the #2 we are f*cked like last year.
3-Why not get a blocking TE that can catch? This draft is full of them and having that would open up our playbook a lot.
4-Agree we could use RT/C upgrades; but at least we have tons of youthful depth and development going on there. The draft is weak for o-line so unless the right C is there in the mid rounds this is the position I could pass on this year; since the value of other positions is much better. O-line and DT draft should be stronger in 2018 which is what I think we should attack IF we need to. For all we know Benecoch /Goddshalk / Sweezy /Webster etc could all end up developing into solid starters.
5-Agree on defensive needs for the most part. Pass rushers are always great as is D-line depth. I’m not sure if SS or FS is a bigger need honestly. Tandy seemed to really come on the end of last year. Lavonte also started playing much better to finish the season and I have no worries about him
March 28th, 2017 at 6:37 pm

Kalind Says:
Certainly not at #19.
I think with the rise in the passing game, and the less reliance on a Sam LB, you’ll begin to see more hybrid Sam/S hybrids, decent safeties that can get near the LOS in a nickle situation.
March 28th, 2017 at 7:08 pm
Dom is gone says:
“Come on Pickgrin…. with Jamies anything is possible???… Love Jamies but he’s not Tom Brady yet”
“yet” being the key word. Winston is driven to be the best and his god given skill set and intelligence on the football field gives him a good chance to be the best sooner than later. As it is – with 32 games of NFL experience under his belt at the ripe old age of just turned 23, Jameis Winston is by FAR the best QB the Buccaneers have ever fielded. With expected improvement this year and additional help from Jason Licht adding talent to his supporting cast – its certainly not inconceivable that the Bucs could get hot at the end of 2017 and win the SB. Unlikely but not impossible.
My point was – when you have a legit franchise QB – even a young one – a SB run is always possible unless the rest of the team sucks which is definitely not the case with the Buccaneers.
March 28th, 2017 at 8:25 pm
The real question is what Jersey number will Cook wear for the Bucs? I’m seeing number 21 for some reason.
March 28th, 2017 at 8:27 pm
1998 packers with Farve…2007 colts with Manning…2012 packers with Rogers…2016 Patriots with Brady , 4 first ballot hall of fame QBs that won the Super Bowl the year before and were the favorites to win it the next year, with 10 times the talent around them did not win the Super Bowl! Winston is an average QB compared to those guys! Again if hall of famers can’t carry their teams don’t think 3rd year QB with an average defense has a chance.
March 28th, 2017 at 8:29 pm
Not a knock on Winston but we need a lot added to this roster to compete for a title
March 28th, 2017 at 8:35 pm
Dom is wrong…..the defense has it’s holes, but it also kept us in a few games too on the back end of the season. I’ll give the D a pick or 2, but nothing high for me. NOT in the first 3 anyways.
Pickgrin…I of course get your point no need to elaborate for me. It’s a QB driven league now and given adequate enough weapons I believe Winston will win multiple SB’s. So Dom is wrong. 🙂
March 28th, 2017 at 8:38 pm
Of course more gelling along the O-line would help too. Get us a replacement for the QB killing machine Dotson, some weapons for Winston. Then focus on the D.
March 28th, 2017 at 8:59 pm
Thank you Joe for posting my response, have no clue why you would scrutinize me. I never disrespect you opinion, hope you don’t mine.
March 28th, 2017 at 9:08 pm
Buc1987 what you believe is irrelevant in the point I’m trying to make… Steve Young 1 Super Bowl… Drew Breese 1 Super Bowl… Rogers 1 Super Bowl… Peyton freaking Mannning 1 Super Bowl , second one does not count with that defense. If you count it give Dilfer the same respect. If you truly think Winston is going to win multiple super bowls your nuts! History alone says he will not win 1 … greatest to ever to play the game won 0 not 1 let alone 2… come on guys take off the pewter glasses!
March 28th, 2017 at 9:19 pm
Dom…. If you could just go ahead and shoot me the winning lottery numbers I would be happy.
March 28th, 2017 at 9:26 pm
This team is finally looks like it going in the right direction after the Allen then Dom Catastrophes… but let’s be realistic we either missed the playofffs or we’re one and done several years with one of the greatest defenses ever assembled! History shows great teams come and go without ever winning squat.

We still need a DE if we wanna beat any playoff teams someday. Way more then we need WR right now

March 28th, 2017 at 9:42 pm
How do you know when you are predicting the future I cannot see how you can square your mouth straight to say that you are just being realistic. Rather than being an actual fan you are stating that you believe the odds are against us ever winning a Superbowl with Winston. What kind of fan is that? I can understand if you don’t agree with somebody else’s reasoning as to why they think that Winston will help us win multiple Super Bowls. That said to say that the odds were against us it’s just pissing in everybody’s Cheerios. Don’t be a Dave,.

How bout our meltdown against Oakland? Thats 2 utter meltdowns in 2 yers……..hahahaha our players still dont know the entire plybook………just because you believe hard enough doesnt mean it will come true. Im sorry spongebob lied fo you
March 28th, 2017 at 9:52 pm
Receiver and returner pick needs to be one in the same there’s no need to draft a guy to return kicks if he’s not going to be a major factor in the offense. Can’t wait for draft day. Mock drafts are useless to look at this year because there are so many ways to go no one really has a clue what we’ll do.
March 28th, 2017 at 9:54 pm
We are on pace with GB SEA and DEN? Your joking? When was the last time one of those three teams got into a playoff push and got completely manhandled like we did against the Cowboys last year? And when was the last time they followed that against a weak division opponent that was out of the playoff race altogether only to get destroyed like we did against New Orleans?
March 28th, 2017 at 9:55 pm
1st- TJ Watt DE
2nd- Budda Baker S
3rd- Carlos Henderson WR
4th- Jordan Leggett TE
5th- TJ Logan RB or trade back into the 4th for Periene
6th- Ryan Switzer KR
7th- Brad Seaton OT
I think we should bring Jamal Charles in for a visit. Sign Mangold and I would also bring Elvis Dumervil in for a visit. He could make for a scary 3rd down and long pass rush specialist. And last but not least we should give Josh Gordon a chance once he is reinstated and released by the browns. Risk versus reward favors way too far into the reward side to not give it a shot.
Adding Watt and Baker to our D would give us those last couple of missing pieces to push us over the edge. Scary talent for years to come especially when you think of Spawn and Watt going to work on 3rd down plays. I love McCaffrey but Watt would help our team more imo.

Me, my dad bought tickets in 1976. I’ve been through everything this team has been through since I was 11 years old. I know what it’s like to be pessimistic. I know what it’s like to be optimistic. And I damn sure know what it’s like to be let down. Me personally I feel like culture change that puts this team on the upswing. It’s not attributed to one single player one coach 1gm or one ownership. I have high hopes and I happen to think a Superbowl is in the cards. I’m as crazy as everyone you say is
March 28th, 2017 at 10:18 pm
That’s why I asked if you guys believed in the Tandy man. I was trying to change the subject to something more rational
March 28th, 2017 at 10:20 pm
Yes Buccaneers that is what I was pointing out. These fans of other teams we’re starting to learn players names on the Bucs. I can tell you that will need picked up DeSean Jackson I had several people call me. They were not happy to see Jackson on the other side of Evans
March 28th, 2017 at 10:22 pm
And to Dom I may have join your conversation late.
March 28th, 2017 at 10:23 pm
I just don’t think it’s proper to say that a team is ready to win Super Bowls when they haven’t proven enough worth to even make it to the playoffs yet. Being in the hunt is nice and that is the team that we are now. I want to see this team prove that they are good enough to actually get into the playoffs. If they fail then I will be very disappointed.
Until they make the playoffs I don’t think they deserve any praise. I’m done with getting excited about a below-average team that hasn’t proven anything yet. 9-7average team
March 28th, 2017 at 10:26 pm
SB. They know our players names for reasons. It doesn’t hurt to have a young franchise quarterback but all around the team we have lots of exceptional Talent in many positions. We are a very exciting team.
And DeSean Jackson is no joke he has had a great career. But that means nothing in Tampa until he gets his first yards and touchdowns
March 28th, 2017 at 10:29 pm
I understand that Buccaneers. And I don’t believe that we are ready to win a Superbowl this year either. But I’m starting to believe that the nucleus is coming together. I would be jumping the gun right now to say I think we’re going to win multiple Super Bowls. But I believe if this team heads in the correct direction as it is now, then we have a good shot at winning the championship. Being a Bucs fan of 41 years it is really nice to have something good to look forward to.
March 28th, 2017 at 10:34 pm
Yeah SB. Tough thing right now and I think we need to get better on both sides of the ball. There is a definite lack of explosiveness and big playmaking ability on both sides. Will be a tough task to fix both areas and one off-season.
March 28th, 2017 at 10:35 pm
Think our defense could get there if they had a edge rush but so do most yeams probably
March 28th, 2017 at 10:37 pm
Well actually I think we have had quick fixes in two of our most desperate areas of need. With Jackson we have a quick fix at receiver. With Baker we have a quick fix at defensive line which is actually a better move than most people realize I think. Now if we get another wide receiver and a running back in the first three rounds along with a safety and defensive line or offensive line in the next two, I would be happy with whatever happens in the next three, but I don’t build football teams for a living so I have to trust those who do.

Off topic but the Gators basketball team got hosed the other night. No problem really for us Gators fans, because the entire team is returning next year except for Kasey Hill. And on top of that we have the ninth best recruiting class in the nation so far.. Vegas can’t do anything about that.

RB, TE, WR, CB, S, DE … and either a DL, LB or OL … that’s balance for sure

Anyways I don’t claim to be an expert At draftees because I don’t have enough time. But I like this guy for what research I have done. Now at this time I’m going to play Assassin’s Creed with my wife. Have a good night photos

SB – agree about Barnett being the best DE we have a chance of drafting. If Cook, Howard, Williams and Davis are all off the board at 19 (likely scenario) then Barnett would be a great pick if he happened to be available (also somewhat unlikely though IMO).
We will most likely be looking at drafting McCaffrey, Njoku or possibly Barnett at 19 assuming we stay put and pick at #19. John Ross and Jabrill Peppers are also possibilities depending on how highly the Bucs rate their skills – but I personally don’t want either at 19.

John Ross, safety, tight end, defensive end, somehow Joe Nixon,2nd wide receiver/playmaker and a 2nd blocking tight end and address the Offensive line help in the undrafted free agency pool as well as Quarterback and Sam linebacker dept…..
