A late-round QB for the Bucs?
We’ve learned over the past couple of seasons that this Tampa Bay regime greatly values the position of backup quarterback.
Word on the street was the Bucs offered Mike Glennon in the neighborhood of $8 million per season to stick around as a backup. And the last two seasons, the Bucs have carried three quarterbacks on the active roster. Their No. 3 has been Ryan Griffin, who recently was offered nearly $2 million to stay as a restricted free agent.
The Bucs flirted with Nick Foles earlier this month, but he returned to the Eagles for $5.5 million a year.
So now what?
If the Bucs don’t invest in a veteran backup, then Joe thinks there’s a solid shot Jason Licht drafts a quarterback in the sixth or seventh round.
Yes, that might annoy a pile of fans, but consider the Bucs believe they have an A+ quarterback guru in QB coach Mike Bajakian, and superior QB mentors in Dirk Koetter and Todd Monken.
Trevor Knight out of Texas A&M (via the Oklahoma Sooners) could be a fit. Knight is a mature prospect — he turns 24 in October — well known for his leadership and extreme athleticism. He has 4.5 speed and he ran for 614 yards last season on 102 carries, including 10 touchdowns.
No, Knight is no stud sleeper prospect with a super accurate arm. But he seems like a Jameis-like, team-first personality, and there’s talk he could be used at other positions.
Joe’s not calling for the Bucs to draft a QB, but Joe would give the move a thumbs up. If they really value a backup so much, then maybe they should look to mold their own from scratch.

But IMO – QB Chad Kelly is a much better prospect.

On topic, if we have to rely on a backup QB, why wouldn’t we want one that could thread the needle? It seems to me that an athletic QB who can line up at other positions wouldn’t be the safest bet to get the ball to our wide receivers. If we’re going to need our backup to come in, shouldn’t we want one who can be a game manager?

Anyone suggesting Chad Kelly either hasn’t done enough research or doesn’t understand the culture on this team.
You’re talking about a guy that burned through 3 schools, had to be removed by security from his own team’s practice field, and started a fight with high schoolers just last year. And don’t get me started with the rap song he did 😉
That’s not just a matter of “growing up.” We want TEAM FIRST guys.

As far as Knight as a QB goes, I hope we look elsewhere lol. When I watched tape of Josh Reynolds I lost count of how many times I said how awful Knight was.

Bucfamous. +1. Agree so much with that post. The time to hope for the talented kid to figure things out is in the past. At this point, with all of the motivation to get straight, if you haven’t got things figured out at 22 sorry. Two polar opposite examples of talented kids.. Noah Spence and Doug Martin, Spence won me over by self testing so that he could take that paperwork to the combine. Everyone makes mistakes and has indescretions. Your character shows by how you react. This is what gives me pause on Mixon despite his incredible talent and takes Kelly off my board. Being said if I was a gm I pick a a qb in the 6th or 7th every year. Roll the dice for that amazing bit of luck

Tnew – Mixon kind of did the same thing as Spence though, in that he continued anger management classes after he fulfilled his court mandated sessions.

I love the research you do and your mock is pretty good too, don’t think I’m trashing you, but Chad K in the strip club capital of the world with money in his pocket is just a train wreck waiting to happen. That guy has million dollar talent and a 2 cent head. You can’t fix stupid. His mistakes are stupid, not immature and I know it can be a fine line, but fighting high school kids when you are going to be taken in the NFL draft goes to show where his head is at. JMO

It makes sense when you have a franchise QB to use a later round pick on a QB you believe has good NFL potential and can be developed. Do it every other year or so and sooner or later you find a good one and are developing good trade value or ultimately comp picks.

I think Trevor would be a solid pick. Butttt Deshaun Watson may be in the board at 19 and Licht may draft him lol. Nothing with Licht is surprising anymore.
