If the Bucs are going to draft a running back early, a former NFL lineman and current talking head said the choice is a no-brainer.
Brian Baldinger, analyst for NFL Network, insists one running back stands apart from the rest after watching loads of college tape of the deep RB class in next month’s draft.
His name is Dalvin Cook.
Per Baldinger, Cook has zero drawbacks as a runner.

Two things about Cook caught Joe’s eyes. One, Cook’s pass-catching ability makes him an every-down player. Second, in his biggest games, Cook had some of his best games. That tells Joe he answers the bell.
Now the question is, will Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht ring that bell next month?
And how cool is it that Cook said his “dream come true” is to play for the Bucs and be reunited with America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston? When is the last time a stud player in the draft wanted to play for the Bucs?

The Bucs (and I’m sure they are) will give serious consideration to Dalvin Cook.
True, he does have fumbles in his past, but HE IS ALSO A GAME CHANGER. Unlike their current set of back, Cook can bust one at any time and he is a great pass catcher out of the backfield. I would give up a 1 and a 2 to move up.

The bucs depth isn’t great. However, starters wise , they are a few players away from being a serious playoff team. So you got to make those few players count. You need a stud running back so if you have to move up a few spots, then you do it. I’m sure dalvin would have to fall to a certain pick range for bucs to pounce. Licht and evaluators understand value well. Again, they needs studs. They need starters… guys who can come in right away and produce. That would be dalvin cook. If that got 2 or 3 studs/ starters in this years draft, then look out

I guarantee cook said he would love playing in jacksonville in order to play with ramsey, smith, and the fsu wr they have. I bet he would say he would love to play for giants in the media mecca of the world. Lets not over think this.

Cook would be the perfect pick for the Bucs – alas, he will be long gone by the time pick #19 rolls around. I’m certainly not on board with trading a day 2 pick to go get him either. Especially when McCaffrey will likely be sitting there at 19.

I would classify 14 fumbles as a pretty huge weakness.
And some of those came in the clutchest of clutch moments.

BucNation, there have been an incredibly wide range of players mocked to the bucs so far. I’ve seen just as many Mocks of us taking Njoku as I have Cook.
Where as Mike and Jameis were the guys for us from start to finish.

I say if Cook can be had then get him. I would also not mind getting Marlon Mack in camp to compete if he is still available in the 7th round or goes undrafted. I have been really busy and have not been able to see projected draft rounds, so I am not sure what has been projected for Mack.

For the reasons discussed, there’s no way he falls to #19. While he may be a talent, there’s no sense in mortgaging the future when there is talent everywhere in this draft and the team has needs beyond RB.
Conversely, if he’s there at #19, well that’s a no-brainer! Go get ’em!

Blake you don’t know s–t you always talk down on these players and you don’t have a clue. I just look at the best fit for our team and I see Cook being that guy. We need a runningback that can help our line out by breaking some tackles, and taking it to the house. Look at the above article, who are they talking about. Who did Earnest Byner say was his 1st runningback, and he gave the other runningback’s credit. This is a former NFL runningback with (2) superbowl rings and a runningback coach of the NFL.

Easier to fin a good RB in the later rounds or a DE, WR, ST, CB? The answer is RB. I’d like the Bucs to find their RB of the future in the 2nd or 3rd round. Cook fumbles too much and Schiano to teach him how to hold the ball correctly. He’d be a fun pick at 19. He would add a lot of juice for 6 weeks or so before his shoulder gives out. Fumbles and Shoulder scare me a lot here.

Cook will be gone by 19 and it is not a good move to move up in draft to get him.(1 to 2 spots ok) Because this is a good draft to get a good RB up to the 4th RD.

Here’s the bottom line: how long do you want Winston to be the QB for the Bucs? 10-15 years? How long is the average life expectancy of an NFL running back, 4-5 years?
Build a team, and offense in particular, that can continue to survive without a high draft pick/high dollar running back. I’m not saying Cook isn’t an excellent running back, he certainly is, but of the playoff teams last year only one had a 1st round pick RB. The rest were all lower round picks.
I’m not going to be able to sway the crowd that wants Cook, I know that. If you want sustainable success in today’s game you can’t build the offense around a running back.

Stud NFL running backs are typically built by the NFL system around them, not the other way around. The guys that are now considered stud NFL running backs for the most part weren’t the stud college running backs coming out. They were hand picked mid round picks that fit the roster that they were chosen for.
It’s not a hard concept.

I’m afraid he will be gone by the time we pick.
If he stays injury free I am very confident he will have at least 1,000 yards rushing and 500 yards receiving as a rookie.
We have arguably the worst group of running backs in the NFL so it makes sense to get an elite one and then possibly another later in the draft

813bucboi – I like Davis but I can’t see the Bucs taking him in the first. It would potentially give us the best LB trio in the NFL though. I don’t like the picks at RB either I would rather Mixon I wouldn’t be upset with Foreman but Mixon is the better pick. I don’t think Mack makes a good NFL RB based on his time at USF, he never showed the ability to run up the middle. I would rather take a S or TE with that extra third round pick and address CB or OLB in one of those later rounds

I wouldn’t make too much of Cook’s fumbling issue, although it is an issue to consider. Foreman, Fournette, and Marlon Mack all had worse fumbling rates in 2016 than Cook. (%’s : 2.12, 2.08, 1.98, Cook 1.87)

BucNation not sure why you think Cook is being projected to the Bucs! I would say around 1 in 20 mocks have him coming here. As of this week the guy popping up a lot is the TE out of Miami. That being said, I would say the mocks suggest there are a good 10 or more players that could end up in Tampa. I would say there is no clear front runner at this point.

Fumble problems can be fixed so that isn’t too big of a concern for me.
Idk Cook personally so I can’t really speak about his character concerns with any facts but it is something he will have to explain to teams.
Of the 3 negatives against him, the shoulder injuries is what I am most concerned with. I understand he didn’t miss many games at all because of them, but he had 3 surgeries which means he re-injured his shoulder twice. If the doctors check him out and he is healthy then great. If they find something in there that leads them to believe he is susceptible to re-injuring it again then that is a problem. That also applies to John Ross as well.
BUT
If the the injured shoulder is what is causing the fumbles, that is a deal breaker for me.

Throw that in with the wild success of Zeke, and the NFL being the copy cat league, and it leads me to believe he’ll go in the top 10 picks.

Yeah he fumbled quite a bit during his first season…then they pretty much disappeared. I don’t think he’ll have a fumbling problem, certainly less than Martin had early on in his career…. Schiano almost killed him. I think Cook’s got it under control now. For the most part.
I’m not taking anyone’s sides when it comes to Cook. I’m on the if they draft him then great bus. Either way a great player is being installed into this team in about a month. Like I said if it’s Cook, it’s Cook. Great player.
Remember there ain’t NO Nole bias in me. I’m all about the Bucs and what I think is best for them, even though I have no say so, like the rest of you. I don’t need durability in Cook, not over the long term anyways. I know it may sound like I’m talking about cattle, but he’ll get us where we want to go before he wears out.

So this is interesting. Jenna Laine had a post on ESPN that stated Cook had 16 fumbles. Lance Zierlien’s Draft Profile on Cook says he had 13 fumbles. That 1 fumble per 63.8 touches stat equates to 12 fumbles. I just went back and looked through all his game logs and counted 11 fumbles lol. 4 different numbers.
Using that CBSSports method here are his fumbles/touch each year from what I counted….
2014: 1 fumble every 48 touches (192 touches, 4 fumbles)
2015: 1 fumble every 253 touches (253 touches, 1 fumble)
2016: 1 fumble every 53.5 touches (321 touches, 6 fumbles)
2014 and 2016 he had a larger issue with fumbles than in 2015. Coincidentally, those are the 2 years he had shoulder surgeries before the season. It is fair to say that if he continues to have shoulder problems then it could hurt his ball security. That is a red flag to me.

And yea, I think Philly will end up going defense at #14. Like I said on a post last week. There are 3 ways draft night can go for Cook.
1) Jags take him at #4. They stocked up on defense in FA and need to do what they can to get Bortles help to try and fix him.
2) Jags take Fournette at #4 and Panthers grab Cook at #8. They rely heavily on the run game and need to find Stewart’s replacement.

Looking at teams ahead of us that could take him:
Cleveland at #12 just put a 2nd round tender on Crowell so they want to keep him.
Philly at #14 has bigger needs on defense.
Colts at #15 could take him to replace Gore, but their defense is also a disaster.
Ravens at #16 just added Woodhead who is one of the better receiving backs in the league which is 1 of Cook’s strengths, so I think if they do draft a RB at all it will be in the mold of Fournette and Perine
Redskins at #17 is interesting. Rob Kelley came on strong for them last season, but he isn’t a game changer so I could see them drafting Cook. Their run defense was bad last year and they just lost their best DL to us in Baker. I think they address DL before drafting a RB.
If Cook makes it out of the top 10 I could see him falling to #19

I will say this tho. They talked with Marlon Mack at the combine multiple times as Joe wrote about a couple weeks ago. They have private workouts scheduled with Kareem Hunt and Brian Hill. All consensus Day 2 maybe Day 3 guys. If Cook does fall to #19 he will most likely be the pick, but I would say the fact that they are showing interest in these guys rules out the idea of trading up in the draft.

Ravens also have to replace two starters from they’re o line last season. Couglin taking a Big back makes more sense to me considering that is what he had the last time he won the Bif game and He made statements about wanting to make his team tougher. Cleve needs to find a QB and Rivera is a defensive guy that watched his defense crumble last season. He did make the statement about drafting an RB to ease the load on cam but with the way those young CBs performed last season along with the departure of Ealy and Klein I don’t think its written in stone them going RB in the first like most are mocking them. I mean Blake has told us all summer long this class is deep at RB..

My point is just because they speak to a particular player often don’t necessarily mean they will draft him. Lasco was the RB from cal they spoke to a number of occasions as well bro. But didn’t end up drafting him.

Daniel Lasco was a 7th round pick, they were most likely trying to bring him as an undrafted free agent.
They also spoke a lot with Donovan smith in 2015…

An let me add jax just signed Ivory to a Big deal last season. I don’t see Coughlin going that route because he’s old school. Them onery older heads not inclined to change they’re ways. Ivory didn’t perform all that well last season but DC doesn’t necessarily fit under the “making your team tougher”category either. Ivory is a scat type RB why go an draft another if you wanna become more physical??? That’s just me tho. I fully expect Coughlin to draft Foreman in round two.

Chris Ivory is a power back that had an awful season last year.
Also idk what it is that makes you think Coughlin only wants big backs. He had Tiki Barber for a number of years, he signed Rashad Jennings, and Shane Vereen.
Just because you don’t want them to draft Cook, doesn’t mean they wont.

It means that they have options. It isn’t “Dalvin Cook or bust” to them. If he doesn’t fall to #19 they have multiple backup plans, which they should have for every position.

Blake, my numbers are correct. As was pointed out my another poster, they are just 2016 figures. The differences you see between some sources are a result of not considering fumbles on receptions. Some lazy people look only at rushing numbers, but I figure fumbles on receptions are just as important.
