“I Get Yelled At At Practice Sometimes”

March 14th, 2017

J. J. Wilcox talks about unloading

The newest Buccaneer admits he’s a bit of a loose cannon.

No, Joe’s not talking about Jason Licht’s assessment of Mike Glennon’s arm.

New Bucs safety J.J. Wilcox spoke Saturday about the great joy he takes in hitting hard. He earned that reputation with the Cowboys over the past four seasons. But it wasn’t enough to save his starting job there or keep him in Dallas.

So Wilcox is wearing Bucs colors now for more than $3 million per season.

He explained that he’s known for dancing the line of NFL decency and struggling with restraint.

“I’m going to play 110 percent every down,” Wilcox said. “I don’t know how to control it, stop it. I get yelled at at practice sometimes.”

Wilcox added that he’ll be the best team player on the Bucs and he came from a small school an plays with “chips” (plural) on his shoulders.

More interesting stuff came from Wilcox during a chat with Buccaneers.com. He explained that defensive coordinator Mike Smith is known for taking players that are “average-good like me and turning them [into] great players].” He also said he liked Smith’s warm, personal welcome.

    Where’s the poadcast at!??!

    No podcast today, Matt

  3. Joeypoppems Says:

I don’t hate the idea of our starting safeties being JJ Wilcox and Keith Tandy but it is a tandem that can be improved.

  4. Mick Says:

Expect a safety in probably round 2, possibly 1 depending on who slips.

  5. gotbbucs Says:

They’ll draft a safety at some point. They fowled up the Ryan Smith evaluation last year, I expect them to right that in this draft. There’s good safeties into about round 4 this year.

  6. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Says:

He has had his share of penalties, and ex Buc Jeremy Zuttah and him got into it, and Zuttah was flagged for a late hit.

Rookie safety J.J. Wilcox committed what could have been a crucial penalty on Sunday afternoon, when he hit Redskins receiver Santana Moss after the whistle, and after Moss was already on the ground. The play, on third down, kept the Washington drive alive and helped the Redskins to a field goal to make it 23-14.
The offense would eventually bail Wilcox out with 11 unanswered points on the way to a come-from-behind victory, but the rookie–while saying his intentions were good on the play–acknowledged afterward that it was a dumb mistake on his part.
“I thought he was still staying up,” Wilcox said, per the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “I don’t want to be the one to let him get up and score. You know, you live and you learn. I’m a rookie. I live and learn. I learned form it, and I understand now there’s different rules. When players are close to the ground, they’re going to call it. Instead of running and hitting them, put your hands on them. You know, I’ll learn from it. It was an aggressive play. It was a foolish play. I take the blame from it. I’ll learn from it a lot.”

Love the mind set. He is looking to become better than average good… He wants to be good good and he looks tk his coaches to help make him very good.

I think that so good of him and a pretty good sign of things to come for our not real good secondary.

    Good Day Folks

  8. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Last hard hitting player we had attracted tons of penalties. What are Wilcox’s penalties like? Where can I find that information?

  9. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Chris@Apple sort of beat me to that. Anyone know where to find the info though?

  10. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Regardless, J J Wilcox is no better than a backup Safety.

  11. The Buc Realist Says:

    @Buc Bonzai

    here

  12. ISH Says:

I gotta believe we’re going to draft a Safety.. Maybe noton day 1 but at least a value pick coming off an injury.. like say an Eddie Jackson. 🙂 He’ll be ready to work out at Bama’s 2nd pro day on 3/29. Ball hawk, great punt returner too.

  13. Joeypoppems Says:

According to that site Realist, here is JJ Wilcox’s penalty totals.

2013: Played in 13 games, 2 penalties accepted against him all year. http://www.nflpenalties.com/player/j-wilcox-dallas-cowboys?year=2013

2014: Played in 16 games, 3 penalties accepted against him all year. http://www.nflpenalties.com/player/j-wilcox-dallas-cowboys?year=2014

2015: Played in 16 games, 6 penalties accepted against him all year. http://www.nflpenalties.com/player/j-wilcox-dallas-cowboys?year=2015

There is no link on that site for 2016 penalty totals

  14. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Lay that wood JJ. Make’em think about crossing that middle.

  15. macabee Says:

This draft is loaded with good safeties and in the later rounds. We all know about Obi Melifonwu, Budda Baker, and Marcus Williams. They’re 3 of the best, but there are a lot more that could help the Bucs.

FS Rayshawn Jenkins/Miami 6-1, 214, 4.51 is projected in the 4th round. Has length, good speed, willing tackler and can cover.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I-t8RaJjKTs

Another good FS prospect FS David Jones/Richmond 6-2, 210, 4.53 projected in the 6th round. Jones is a local kid graduating from St. Pete High School. He is a ball hawk and a hitter. Injured for most of 2016, in 2015 he led the FCS with nine interceptions (his four interceptions against Albany tied the NCAA record) He finished second on the team with 97 total tackles and would be a higher draft pick but for his choice of small school Richmond.

  16. BigHogHaynes Says:

Let’s hope he’s better than the back/up safeties we put on the field last year! I’m going to give him a chance to learn from the Great Mike Smith, at least he will give you a thump!

  17. Pickgrin Says:

    Draft Budda Baker please…..

  18. Miko Says:

hard hitting safeties don’t mean squat anymore…they just get penalties…remember Goldson? his career ended because the game became a sissy sport…

  19. Eric Says:

    Goldson plays for the Falcons…

    but you’re right.

  20. The Buc Realist Says:

I disagree, You can still be a hard hitting safety!!! But the days of turning into a human spear as soon as a WR catches in front of them are over!!!!

  21. DB55 Says:

Speaking of hard hitting safeties. Did you see the hit Chris Conte put on Julio Jones? After seeing this I must admit Conte is much better than I originally thought. BOOM 💥

  22. Rojas Says:

Off topic, but I wonder if Cleveland is willing to trade Cam Erving.

  23. Joeypoppems Says:

    http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-game-highlights/0ap3000000579972/Cam-Heyward-vs-Cam-Erving-Advantage-Heyward

You mean this Cam Erving? Why would anybody trade for this guy lmao

  24. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Tell me about the top rank coverage safety. I look at these guys in school an often it appears they are at the line of scrimmage. I get it the stiff tackles look good but can you cover a player and cover alot of field like McCourty and Chung do up in NE. Anyone can hit hard. But not everyone can cover.

  25. Chris Says:

Lol DB. So, Chris Conte was bad before he got here

  26. Chris Says:

Cam Erving was terrible for the Browns. Nice guy, terrible center, maybe going to guard might help him.

  27. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Bucs signed long snapper Garrison Sanborn to a one year deal. Age 31, but it’s only a year, so I’m good with it if he gets the job done.

Still no news on Bradley McDougald.

  28. GhostofSchiano Says:

A great testament to a great coach, Mike Smith will Head Coach again in the NFL. Hopefully AFTER another Bucs Superbowl title.

  29. Rojas Says:

Lol ok never mind. After seeing him getting destroyed by Heyward I’m good.

  30. SB Says:

The Seahawks are bringing in Bradley mcdougald

  31. Fred E. Buc Says:

Yeah, I first thought this article was about Glennon. Yeah, cannon arm for sure, always dead-on accurate after extending those plays relentlessly to make the tough throws to get TDs and win the game…never seen him check down or throw out of bounds. Guy’s a monster. But Glennon’s out of control too sometimes in his attitude. It doesn’t happen because he is such an escape artist, nor because he’s very dangerous when so often flushed out of the pocket and he’s taking it all on himself…but when he does get sacked….he’s known to stare at the guy that did it while he gets up, and offer an ear-splitting “Darn You!” This man is on his way to being the franchise QB in Chicago. 10 years, easily. Three or four SBs, and team captain instantly.

  32. ARGH_M8E Says:

  34. JAB83 Says:

GMC is your DPOY… Why do I say this… BECAUSE our coaches and GM have and continue to finally build a team around him…

Cant wait to see who we draft and sign off of wavers. The draft has never looked so exciting to me and thats an understament. No reason to believe we wont sign more free agents off waviers just as good as the ones we just.

  35. JAB83 Says:

    just got…

  36. ARGH_M8E Says:

    Gattttttttttoraide^

  37. ARGH_M8E Says:

Definitely thought we’d see some action today. I still want a BIG RB, a bruiser!!! Come’on MANNNN, LACY would’ve been interesting, BLOUNT, draft maybe. We all want a thumper running over fools ya?! Let’s go!!!!

  38. BuccaneEric75 Says:

Macabee, Obi tested well, but I’ve heard a lot of draftniks say his tape isn’t too good. I’ve never seen him, so I’ll take thier word.

  39. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

ARGH the Ravens signed Eric Weddle to 3 year deal. Colts signed Robert Turbin to 3 year deal. Once the Eagles grab L.Murray that’ll be all the teams inn front of us that made me a little nervous about wanting an RB bro.
