Over the weekend, new Bucs wide receiver Flash Jackson said he wanted to make life easier for America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston.
Andy Benoit of theMMQB.com suggests that will happen just by DJax stepping onto the field.
The Bucs signing DJax helps the offense out in many ways, per Benoit. In particular, defenses now must play more vanilla against the Bucs as overloading one side of the field will invite disaster.
[The Bucs] offense became hamstrung at times last season with the way opponents constantly rolled safeties to Mike Evans’s side. The addition of Jackson and his speed really complicates that for a defense. Anytime you have wide receivers who can threaten safeties, you limit the defense’s ability to take chances and disguise. That makes life markedly easier on a young QB like Jameis Winston.
And if that is the case, shouldn’t Cam Brate be able to gouge a defense by exposing seams? And shouldn’t this open up underneath patterns for Rudy Humphries?
Now if the Bucs can only get a running back. You know, like a certain guy who played on Saturdays last year?

If you are looking for gouging and explosive plays from underneath that will be CS34!!!! did you forget he is on the roster Joe???? followed by AH10. you are overestimating CB84 abilities!!! Great possession pass catcher. But now with more room underneath, you want guys that can make the first guy miss and turn it into an explosive play!!! and that is not CB84!!!!! and we need to see what the draft and late cuts will bring this roster!!!!!!

Not buying it. We still have $40 million to obtain players. We are still a hamstring away from being in the same position at our WR spot as we were last year. I understand that we must sign Evans in a year or two, but this “weapons for Jameis” quote can’t mean just signing DJAX. We need playmakers. Dalvin Cook is a playmaker. I don’t understand these post saying wait and draft an RB in later rounds. If Cook is there, get him. He will change everything about our offense and Jameis knows that and I’m sure he is in Koetter’s ear.

We have arguably the worst running backs in the NFL.
If we have the ability to draft MCCaffrey or Cook and pass on them It will be time to find a new GM.
We also need depth at WR and TE

Nole- that’s a good comparison but Charles was much quicker than cook so his lack of size wasnt an issue as he could avoid big hits and the pounding a undersized RB takes. 5’10” 210 lbs is definitely a concern for me but he’s young and still has a chance to add weight
I’d prefer another receiver over a RB as good gms can find productive backs anywhere in the draft

But yeah, I’ve pretty much moved on from Rb in the 1st round. We need a gamechanging Safety/Corner, a pass rusher, a right tackle, or one of the freakish manbeast TE’s in the 1st. With guys like Optmus Perine, Marlon Mack truck, or Kareem the dream Hunt in the 3rd or later…
It would be dumb to draft a Rb in the 1st.

I mentioned last night that drafting OL round 1 might be the smartest move just because there is a high demand in the league for solid OL play and since this draft class isn’t very good maybe we should get one of the few prospects worth a high pick and then take advantage of the depth of the other positions like RB, WR, DBs, and DL.
If Licht feels we need to address the OL anyway. I might join DB55 on that bandwagon

100 percent agree on building a #WALLFORWINSTON, take the best tackle available at 19, RB TE and WR are very deep this draft, also my favorite RB is Mixon but I’ll leave him out of the conversation, Dotson is warrior and great dude, but he’s 32 and injury prone, that’s just fact, our WR corps is blamed a lot for missing the playoffs, but Dotson not playing versus Dallas and Saints, Dotson is the bridge player, our future RT doesn’t appear to be on the roster unless you want an undrafted L Webster or a 5th round Benenoch who played guard last year, Dotson will get hurt, and JW won’t have time to throw to those WEAPONSFORWINSTON

You can switch any order by round, Dalvin Cook is not Marshall Faulk, that’s just crazy talk, Faulk ran a 4.38 to Cooks 4.48, and was way more agile, Cook played behind a top OL too

Guess where Jamaal Charles was drafted? 3rd round. I would consider Charles a very successful back, but he’s still only had 5 good seasons. The draft is deep at this position, so there’s a ton of opportunity cost associated with taking a guy in the first round that likely has multiple substitutes, at later rounds. When you factor in likelihood of injury at the position, there’s almost no reason to take that much risk with the first pick, unless he’s a superstar. Invest in the lines or get a true difference maker.

I’ll add that guys like Jamaal and Dalvin if you really they’re game they are slippery. In three years of watching Dalvin at FSU I don’t recall him talking many big time shots. They have way of averting those type of collisions. Jamaal did it for years now will he be able to elude those hits after the knee is to be seen. But prior to that he never took big shots.

Tony his size is comparable to Lsean McCoy Jamaal Charles Marshall Faulk Walter Payton to mention a few. I would argue he os the ideal size for the position. Throw in Ladainian Tomlinson.

Most running backs are only as good as the offensive line in front of them, just saying. How is Dalvin when he immediately has someone in his face in the backfield? For any RB, the NFL is about how much you can gain after first contact. Koetter wants a bell cow back that the oline can get used to having back there.
Dalvin is a great playmaker, no doubt, but is he what Koetter and Licht think is required for the offense to work? In my opinion, no. I don’t think they believe they need a premier pick RB to accomplish what they want to accomplish on offense. The league as a whole leans toward that mindset.

So again….nobody here wants an HOF RB…or even a possible one. Look at the HOF RB’s and tell me how many were drafted out of the first round. So far I think Blake has produced Terrelle Davis and that’s it…ONE! So I guess I might as well give up on the best eh?
And some people are just getting crazy here. Somebody tried to say Russell Shepherd is a better receiver than DJAX and will put up better numbers.
Now I’m reading Marlon Mack is better than Dalvin Cook. Wow! I like Marlon Mack OK…but every game I watched USF…admittedly only a few…ONE PLAYER stood out….ONE PLAYER on that team is great…Quinton Flowers is the real deal! I didn’t even notice Mack but I certainly was blown away by Flowers.
Don’t know if he has an NFL arm but he has NFL athleticism and a Jameis will to win. That kid is a genuine baller.
IF Flowers is NOT going to be an NFL QB then I hope we get him. Mack..meh.

You beat me to the punch Joey! However, I dare say that most here wouldn’t know but 3 of the players listed above, myself included. The HOF list, overall, is a who’s who of 1st round RBs.
There are a lot of good RBs, 1st rounders even, that never make it to the HOF. That’s OK.
In terms of talent, it would be hard to dismiss StPete’s argument. Fournette and Cook are the top RBs in this draft. I don’t know if they are “can’t miss” prospects like LT or Faulk as some infer, but they’re pretty good by most standards.
And, to your point about Shep vs DJax, only an idiot would make a statement like that StPete!!!! I agree!

I only knew 3 of those players too lol. This is what I don’t understand about the HoF argument that Stpete likes to bring up. So because a lot of RBs that were drafted in the 1st round 20+ years ago means it should still be done? The game has changed since then. Teams don’t rely on 1 guy to get 20-30 carries a game as much anymore. They rely on the arms of their QBs. RBs are complimentary roles in today’s NFL, not the focal point.

Wow Joey…you compare 1936 and 1941 and 1950’s…that’s a major stretch. Leroy Jordan was a LINEBACKER not a RB. I need to see your link. How many of those oldies but goodies were two way players who also played defense…it wasn’t until after WWII that players became so specialized.
But lets follow all of the logic I see on this board. There are plenty of good WR’s available…Antonio Brown taken in the 6th…plenty of great RB’s available 4th round and beyond…plenty of great safeties…yadda yadda yadda.
Then why don’t we simply trade our 1st 2nd and 3rd round picks and load up on 4th rounders…we could probably score ten 4th round picks and with all those GREAT RB’s available we could have two and still have 8 more picks in the 4th for ALL of those fine alternatives.
I snark of course but in actuality the great Bobby Beathard created seven SB participants with 4 of them winning.
He used to trade down whenever the opportunity presented itself believing the draft was a total crapshoot and the more chances you had the better your odds.

So apparently Cook had a bad combine and it looks like he easily could fall to the Bucs. A couple of mocks actually have him falling well into the 20s. Anybody have any insight on why he may have performed so poorly at the combine?

I wasn’t comparing anything. You said “Look at the HOF RB’s and tell me how many were drafted out of the first round” so I obliged and found 11 that were out of the 1st round. That is all.
The only change I made was including guys listed as HBs and FBs since they had Jim Brown as a Fullback and Gale Sayers as a Halfback.
And none of those guys are listed as 2 way players. Bobby Mitchell played a lot of special teams but other than that they all played in the backfield.

And I don’t understand why you keep lumping all these other positions in with RBs. I say this every time someone tries to make that argument about other positions. RBs are different than the other positions. They are undervalued which is why the fall down boards, which is why there are usually good RB prospects available in the middle rounds. There isn’t a demand in the league for 1 dominant RB on a team seeing how a lot of teams are shifting to the committee approach.
There is a demand in the league for WRs which is why Antonio Brown was the 22nd WR drafted in 2010…. the 22nd WR! Want to know how many RBs were drafted in the 194 picks before him? 8…. 8 RBs in 194 picks versus 21 WRs.

@Stpete, the point we are trying to get accross to you is that the Rb position is different from the others. You can name me AB and TB all day long. But I look at the list of top 10 Rushers from last year and off the top of my head I can name you 3 dudes that were drafted in the 3rd round or later. Jordan Howard, Jay Ajayi, and Lamar Miller. And thats just from last year dude.
Yes you are statiscally more likely to hit on a 1st round pick than you are in any other round. But yoy as a Bucs fan should know that you are not guaranteed success on guys with 1st round talent. Cadillac was damn good before he tore up his Knees. And Doug Martin has all the ability to be a top rusher when healthy/ focused. But he we are trying to boot him out the door.
Do we really want to go through that again? I don’t. Me personally, I’d rather have 3 competent guys with a range of skill sets that you can rotate based on situations/ who has the hot hand. That way one guy doesn’t have to shoulder the load, and get worn down to the point of injury.
Also I coulda swore I told you that Thurmond Thomas and Curtis Martin were also drafted outside the 3rd and are in the hall. Not that it matters.

The more I look at this Bucs team…the more I think will be OL with the 19th pick. We have 2 OL holes that need to be solidified with younger talent. This is a very deep RB class this year so round 2-3 will still have talent. Dalvin is great but I think our OL (protecting #3) will take priority. I like OJ but he wont start over Brate in year 1 so I dont see that making sense at 19.
