Bucs’ Flirting With Nick Foles Is Over

If you blinked last week you might have missed the Bucs getting serious about making Nick Foles their new No. 2 quarterback.
With Mike Glennon bolting for gargantuan cash and a starting gig in Chicago, the Bucs jumped right in looking for an experienced backup.
Foles appeard to be an ideal fit, but now he’s going to back to the Eagles, per a deal announced this morning.
Ok, there are other fish in the sea. But now what does Philly do with Chase Daniel, the guy they made the NFL’s highest paid backup QB last season?
Keep an eye on Daniel, primarily because he’s an Andy Reid guy and spent three years in Kansas City with him, where many fans wanted Daniel to start over Alex Smith.
Dirk Koetter and and Reid are close and if the Bucs are really serious about paying an experienced backup, then Daniel, 30, could become a target.

Foles is a better system fit in Philly.
Chase Daniels comes from a very productive spread offense @Mizzo
Played under a similar style in Kansas City with Andy Reid/Chris Ault.
He would be a welcomed cheaper -stop gap alternative.

I know the kid has some growing up to do
But he’s a very solid QB prospect to groom.

The only comment that I read that made any sense is the one that said draft Chad Kelly in the 6th. IMO all the rest are worse than what the Bucs have now.

I would take RG3 over Manuel…OUCH….yeah we need a reliable backup. I’m not against drafting a rookie QB in the later rounds. Because if Jameis goes down the season is over anyway. May as well have a developmental
QB get that work.

Maybe the Bucs could kick the tires on Ryan Fitzpatrick? As the Bills and Jets found out he’s fool’s gold as a starter, but for someone to come in off the bench and at least give you a shot to win he’s probably one of the more proven FA QB’s currently available. Bratty Jay Cutler would be humorous if nothing more than to read Joe’s articles of Jay wearing a sweater and holding a kitten 🙂

Everyone always wants something ‘better’ but maybe Bucs already have that in Ryan Griffin. Shaun Peyton & the Saints were obviously impressed with him, and so was Jason Licht & the Bucs when they plucked him off the Saints’ practice squad 2 yrs ago. Even kept him on the 53-man roster for past 2 yrs as the 3rd QB, which should tell folks something. Excellent size (6’5″ & 210 lbs) and ended his Tulane career as the school’s leader in attempts, completions and completion percentage. Not that shabby … give him a chance and let’s see what he can do in this year’s training camp. Bucs fans may be surprised.

TDTB … Griffin was a UFA. As the 4th QB with the Saints when they picked him up, Payton probably looked at him as a development project I’d guess. They had Luke McCown as their backup QB so practice squad it was. Still, he may have more upside than folks recognize right now.

I hope so but he did look kind of lost in the preseason games last year. Would have felt a lot better about Foles, who would have been an upgrade over Glennon.

No big deal. Still say if Cleveland wants to dump Brock for like a 7th rounder and they’ll eat 90% of his salary then the Bucs should get him. For one he’s basically a Glennon clone, at least physically. Second, you play him in the preseason and if he does well then next year after the guarantees it’s in his contract are up he would have trade value for a team needing a starter. Why Cleveland would trade him I have no idea since he is the best QB on their roster right now and they are paying him anyways – but if they want to eat most of that huge salary then the Bucs should throw out a late pick with the idea of having a bavkup this year and trading him next offseason.

It might be a bad fit for Gabbert seeing as how he was drafted to Jacksonville during Koetter’s last year there as OC. Considering Blaine already played poorly enough in Koetter’s offense to get Dirk bounced from the Jags, I’m thinking it might not be a good marriage?
