Yesterday, long-time Bucs beat guy Woody Cummings hopped on the airwaves of WDAE-AM 620 and the subject of running backs came up. And Cummings said it would blow his mind to see Florida State product Dalvin Cook slip to No. 19 overall pick and the Bucs look elsewhere.
“I have a hard time believing if Dalvin Cook is sitting there at No. 19 they pass,” Cumming said. “I really – I have a hard time believing that. That’s just me. No one inside the organization has told me they love Dalvin Cook that much. For instance, I know they like Marlon Mack a lot. They spent some time obviously watching him at during USF home games and they have a deep affinity for him as well.”
But Mack is not Cook. Most impressive about Cook is is performance against many top opponents. When a guy raises his game when the lights shine brightest, he has game.
If Cook is there at No. 19 — yes, a huge if — and the Bucs pass, that would tell Joe the Bucs dug up something on him that is unsavory.

Yes they could. If he was there i think trading down for a rb thirsty team would be the best option like giants, cheifs etc. I think Cook can be a decent rb like Mark Ingram. I just dont see the bucs taking him at 19 even if he is there (which he is not going to be). Enjoy watching cook in Carolina Blue NosBos.

I’ve seen mocks where Cook goes as early as the top 5 and others where he actually falls to the Bucs. Personally, I think you put him and Jameis together however you can… even if it means trading up.

I’d take McCaffery over Cook as well. Him sitting out the bowl game doesn’t bother me but it does make me question his heart. I know he did it to avoid injury but competitors compete. Now that I typed that out, I’m not so sure. I haven’t seen anything on Cook that makes question his competitiveness. We need players who want to win as bad as Winston week in and week out.

I also like McCaffery. So I also know for a fact that Cook did not train for the draft at a facility. He worked out in his own and it showed at the combine. So to me that was him being non committed to the process and a red flag.

Cook very well may be there at number 19, when we pick.
He ran a not so good 40 meter time at the combine, and some other numbers were simply average.
Some feel he may even drop out of the first round!
Fornette who is 30 lbs lighter is nearly as fast as Cook

I like mccaffery aswell. He looks like a real weapon, worry about him running between the tackles a little bit. I would also be happy with donte foreman.

@Aaron no brother Im right there with you. McCaffrey is the better guy to create matchups. Plus he can play 4 positions. Those being Rb, Slot, wideout, and returner.
It wouldn’t surprise me if Cook goes in the top 10, also wouldnt shock me if he falls and we pass on him.

Nobody can say for certain that Cook will be gone by #19. A lot of things can happen during the draft and he is a RB, an undervalued position in today’s NFL (which is why there are so many success stories of RBs in the middle rounds).
As far as passing on him at #19, it is a possibility. It all depends on who else is available. The draft is loaded with defensive talent so maybe there will be a run on QBs or a team takes a chance on some OL early. There could be somebody on defense that they like more than Cook that falls to them because of what other teams do. Nobody knows what will happen.

Look at the Bucs Organization attempting to be coy about they’re love for Dalvin. Cute at best😊, for one reports are circling about Dalvin potentially falling totally out of the first round. My belief is because of the statement he made in font of the entire league when he stood at the podium more so than a average combine. Marlon Mack no knock from me on the kid can’t say I really watched much of him outside of when my Noles faced the Bulls but to eye he okay not great. If that case why even bother we already have twinkle toes on our current roster. He’ll be there at 19 and trust me what Fameis wants Fameis will get. Welcone to Tampa Mr. Dalvin.

I have to disagree on you with this one Joe. This is a very good RB Draft Class this season and the Dalvin Cook has his question marks. I would not be surprised one bit if the Bucs passed on Cook to take a top end safety such as Obi Melanofu or Budda Baker. You heard how afraid Dirk sounded when he was talking about his safeties. Dont’a Foreman, Marlon Mack, and Samaje Perine are just a few examples of a couple good secondary options.

None of these guys are Zeke Elliott. They’ve all got warts. This is an incredibly deep draft for running backs. You can get a quality RB in the third or fourth round, or a situational guy even later. Pass rusher and WR have to be the Good Guys’ top priorities.

Aaron, After watching McCaffrey and Cook side by side in the combine i think the better all around back is McCaffrey. His pass catching ability is slot reciever good. He’s actually faster than Cook which is a surprise. His running ability is pretty close to Cook. His return ability is a big plus. Don’t get me wrong i would be happy with either of them. But McCaffrey has closed the gap between the two.

This is part of the problem. In December and January we start looking at early mock drafts and begin to determine in our favorite players. As time passes the Combine, Free agency and Pro Days factor in along with talking heads takes. As the draft draws nearer players start flying up and down the boards arbitrarily and superstars are created during underwear football. Our impressions don’t change and we are perplexed when a player drops from 5 to 19. Always been my belief that after RD! pick 6, all bets are off. Put away all your lists and charts and sit back for a few days and enjoy the show.

I’m a fan of McCaffrey over cook as well. Cook has a couple of question marks in terms of off the field issues, fumbling, and dedication. McCaffery seems like a better all around player and he has the most potential to be a better player once he gets to the NFL. We’ve seen plenty of over hyped RBs come into the league and become avg to maybe a little over avg before. I think cook will fit that bill.

i don’t see the bucs prioritizing the position that heavily. there’s a reason they re-signed rodgers before Free Agency began and haven’t cut doug martin yet, they want to be free to use their high picks on a position other than RB. If a steal is available at RB, the bucs can and should use that as trade leverage

no way mccaffery is gonna be better than dalvin i just don’t see it. i mean we saw it at the combine dude put up 10 reps on the bench press there’s no way he’s gonna be your feature back carrying the ball up the middle and creating yards he’s just not big enough. he’s gonna have a charles sims like role in the league and what would the point be to getting mccaffery when we already have sims on the roster lol. dalvin could solve our problems as our main back who can carry the ball 15-20 times a game but also help out in the pass game him our kamara would be our safest picks out of all the backs i believe

OJ Howard , simple as that and I think he is a player you actually trade up for ( which I am not a fan of). Koetter uses t ends and the difference between Howard and the rest on the field is a lot wider than the difference between the rb’s. There is only one Oj Howard in this draft and maybe next years draft but there may be (? )10 potential stud running backs. Howard is a Total difference maker for a defenses ability to do different things.

You’re probably right if you listen to Licht’s words from the combine. His combine interviews are telling also. My point in posting the mocks is to say it’s possible for Cook to be there at 19. If that happened will the Bucs pass if TEs Howard or Njoku is on the board. I don’t know. But I agree with you Licht has made public his affinity for a TE.

I have not commented on Cook at all. I saw a few of his games, him busting 200+ yards on a few teams. USF could not stop him, their defense not too good and a shootout in every game. I have enjoyed the back and forth opinions here and don’t have a clue where he will be drafted or by who. Anxious to get the deal underway though.

Unless it is a QB, general managers are risk averse with 1st round picks. When you whiff on a 1st round pick, the hot seat warms and you risk losing your job. Cook is a risky pick due to injury and character issues. There is a lot of quality backs the Bucs can pick up later in the draft. If a later pic whiffs, it’s not as big a risk for the management. McCaffrey has no injury or character issues to date. He is also a match-up nightmare for defensive coordinators. Jameis right now doesn’t have a check down weapon. Bucs need a punt or kick off return weapon. McCaffrey checks all the boxes.
I think any of the following players would be sound 1st round picks:
RB – McCaffrey
WR – Ross
WR – Davis
SS – Melifonwu
DE – Bennet

than Cook. He looks leaner but He’s rocked up.
As to who will be a better pro, if you draft McCaffrey and use him strictly as a “traditional” back, it wouldn’t make sense.
The guy is versatile and it’s a challenge for the team that drafts him to figure out how best to use his versatility. The biggest problem with McCaffrey is he doesn’t fit into a single box . In the NFL, how many coaches are creative vs traditional.

If McCaffery had skipped a playoff game for the title then he could be said to have quit on his teammates. Which effing bowl game did he miss anyway. Did Stanford win or lose? Who did they play? I can’t answer any of those questions without google because the freaking game like ALL bowl games except for the CFP bowls are MEANINGLESS.

I prefer Dalvin because I’ve seen so much more of him. He is clearly the real deal. If we can’t get him I’m certainly open minded about McCaffery. After that 4.31 40 yard dash I’m even more excited about Curtis Samuel. The kid is a football player who is really, really fast…not a really really fast guy playing football…no more Jeff Demps please!!!
I hope we get at least one of those three with Dalvin still at the top of my list.

@tmax- I have to chime in on your criticism of McCaffrey and say that your statement isn’t fair, all things considered. If you’re not a senior, you could make that argument about a lot of players out of college.
McCaffrey has a unique skill-set. Can Dalvin play those positions and return kicks also? We really don’t know, he wasn’t asked to.
I don’t think one’s better than the other, they’re just different. They both played pretty good competition.

Anyone who thinks Dalvin Cook is not a top 10 talent needs to simply watch him play.
Cook is absolutely a special talent. In fact he’s one of the best RB talents to come out in the last 10 years. Top 5 easy in my book. (Fournette is as well).
I said that about Jameis Winston 2 years ago and I’m saying it about Cook this year. Doubters dismiss such claims as FSU fanboy talk – but the simple fact is that FSU fans have seen Cook play week in and week out for 3 straight years. We know what he’s capable of. We know that the dude is a straight up TD machine. DC’s 4.5 40 at the combine means nothing! Watch the tape. Time and time and time again he gets the edge and is literally just GONE. TD!
If Cook is there at 19 (which would be hard to believe) there should be no hesitation on the Bucs part at nabbing a legit top 10 talent and special playmaker in Dalvin Cook. Pay extra to move up for him? I wouldn’t – not with all the RB talent available through 3-4 rounds this year as well as TE Safety and CB talent as well. All needs for the Bucs and strengths of this draft. But if Cook is sitting there at 19? That’s pretty much a no brainer IMO.
McCaffrey is a dynamic player also. He and Cook are the 2 RBs that fit the Bucs needs for a #1RB well and are worthy of a 1st round grade. McCaffrey would look GREAT in a Buccaneer Burger King uniform. But the value is not there at 19 for McCaffrey like it would be for Cook. If we could trade down a few spots and pick up an extra 3rd round pick and still get McCaffery at the end of the 1st, I’d be very happy with that scenario as well.
I’m normally against the idea of drafting a RB in the 1st round – but this group of Cook, Fournette and McCaffrey are all worthy of it. More than worthy in the case of Cook and Fournette if you have a mid round pick or lower.

Disagree pickgrin i’ve watched as much tape on Cook as I have any other player in this draft and put simply, i’m just not a fan.
Dudes hips are stiff, and I think he got way too much of his production just getting to the outside and running straight ahead.
Imo McCaffrey represents much more value because he can play 4 positions better than most dudes play 1.

LOL at the “hips are stiff” comment. Cooks vision is superb and his ability to make defenders miss with just one cut is exceptional.
McCaffrey is a very good to great prospect – I already said that. He’d be a good fit for the Bucs because of his all around skills including dynamic return ability which we DO need.
But when you are talking about a pure homerun playmaker being handed the ball – and having a chance to score on any running play from any point on the field – you are talking about Dalvin Cook. In the last 2 years when both were featured – Cook had a 6.7 ypc average to McCaffrey’s 6.15. Cook also had 38 rushing TDs the last 2 years compared to McCaffrey’s 21. That’s a pretty significant difference in “explosives” as Koetter likes to call them.

And its not about how many games his missed. Its about his body already breaking down and requiring surgery. If he needed surgery in college where the season is shorter and the players dont hit as hard, logic dictates that his body will continue breaking down in the pros.

Yes it is – that’s really all that matters. Kind of like wins. McCaffrey has missed 3 times as many games as Cook in his College career btw.
Cook had the ball in his hands 574 times in the last 2 years (and scored a TD 1 out of every 14 times he touched it BTW). Of course he’s going to take a lot of hits and get some nicks as a result – its the nature of the game. But he was always available week in and week out and always performed week in and week out. Can’t really ask for more than that….

Wow, for anybody to say Dalvin Cook is overrated has obviously NEVER seen an FSU game or watched the game when FSU played Michigan.

Did anyone see the clip where Maurice Jones-Drew ranked Joe Mixon ahead of Cooks as the best RB in the draft? After watching some highlights, it’s hard to argue. Punching aside, Mixon can ball!
Here’s a pertinent question that seems to have been overlooked: Which RB can pick up a blitzing LB? If he can’t do that then his playing time will be limited.
This draft is loaded with RBs. Resist the urge and build a wall or draft positions harder to fill.

I gotta be honest, i thought cook was more explosive from his tape than what his combine numbers indicate. Doug Martin was better than cook at every event except the 40. Which Cook was barely faster than Martin. I thought cook was better than that. If i was luke warm on cook before, i think the tub has gone cold after his combine performance. He is not the gifted athlete i thought he was. I’d rather give martin a redo than waste a first rounded on cook.

Koetter runs the ball up the gut 95% of the time. What is Dalvin Cook’s achilles heel? Running up the gut… he doesnt have the vision or drive to run up the gut. He would rather bounce it out for a loss than work hard for that 3 yard “fight for every blade of grass” run up the gut. And his speed in college will be average speed in the NFL. He wont be able to out run NFL linebackers.
