Is Chris Baker Chatter Just Leverage On Spence?
March 7th, 2017Plenty of Bucs observers out there think all the national buzz about the Bucs gearing up to chase manbeast free agent DE/DT Calais Campbell was just a rouse to pressure Will Gholston into a contract extension with the Bucs yesterday.
Understandable. Joe will put that it in the “possible” category.
And that brings us to the present, which allegedly has Bucs hot in the pants for 29-year-old Redskins DT Chris Baker, an interior pass rusher who is a solid player. Meanwhile, CSN MidAtlantic just reported this week that Redskins and Baker are progressing on a new contract.
So Baker’s possible link to the Bucs, is that just Baker’s agent putting names out there? Is it real? Or is the Bucs negotiating behind the scenes to bring back Akeem Spence, their unrestricted 25-year-old, tough-guy nose tackle?
It’s that time of year, folks. Trust nothing until a deal is done.

Really need some pass rushing chops on the interior. Spence is young but he just doesn’t bring that to the table. If they wanna sign him at 3-4 mil I’m all for it but damn, just can’t remember ever thinking, it’s a good thing we have that Akeem Spence on our team.

Bucs resigned Jacquizz! Good move!

we really need leverage to sign spence?

Bennie Logan please

Bucs can move on from Demar Dotson with no dead money. Anyone here wanna take any bets we do just that and go after Rick Wagner?
March 7th, 2017 at 11:05 am
Jeagan, they were in talks from what I have heard, have you seen the contract details? I cant find where they’ve announced it.

Akeem Spence is a run stopper, just like Booger was…though less matured at the moment. He’s solid, not difference making, just like Booger was.

Spence is not horrible but let’s not forget he is a lifetime member in the FRAGILE 3 DT Fraternity with McDonald and softy… Every position that can be upgraded should be. any and every player who can be replaced with a better option should be replaced that is what winners do. bucs hang onto way too many mediocre players and the results prove that year in and year out.

“just can’t remember ever thinking, it’s a good thing we have that Akeem Spence on our team.”
+1.
But I have definitely thought that about Gholston / McCoy / Jack Smith / Noah Spence / & Robert Ayers multiple times in multiple games based on the impact plays they’ve made

So many choices, so much money. Free agency is gonna be filled with value picks – Licht’s cup of tea.
Looking for a LG or RT? The Chargers just cut 1st round D.J. Fluker. Is he better than Gosder Cherilus? Licht must separate wheat from chaff!

Hopefully a replacement for Spence. He isn’t very good.
March 7th, 2017 at 11:17 am
Jac Smith Really…. It just does not get any more unreliable than that with the exception of doug martin and murphy of course.
Really you people kill me… He is the most unreliable player on the roster next to doug martin and louis murphy… you still have hopes for Jac Smith really wow… wasting a roster spot on Smith would be a huge mistake. he has proven he can not stay on the field at all.

China
That would be the smart move, in totally with you on that. But then again we are talking about the Bucs so ….

As for Jac, I personally like Howard Jones more but I’m not sure what his status is with the team. Hurt? FA? Practice squad? Idk

tmaxcon – Going into last season he was being touted as our 10-sack guy. Yeah, injuries have been the story of his career, but rather than 12mil a year receivers, teams that make it to the Super Bowl are full of low-risk (cheap) high-reward (QB disruption) guys like Smith.

Should resign Spence, adds solid depth which is as important as quality starters. Retaining developed draft picks is important to successful franchises.
March 7th, 2017 at 11:37 am
According to Gil Garcia, Akeem Spence is the worst run stopper on the team.
“Following numbers are rankings for the entire league in (run) stuffs and stuff yardage. Ayers 231st, McDonald 248th, McCoy 277, A. Spence 321st”
March 7th, 2017 at 11:52 am
lol mike I was thinking the same thing. Why in the world would we need leverage for Spence?
March 7th, 2017 at 11:56 am
The term “solid depth” does not apply to Akeem Spence. More like “cheap, warm body to fill in for Clinton McDonald”

DJ Fluker now on the market. *cough* better than Dotson *cough* *cough*

Jack Smith has been our best DE at getting to the QB the last few years*when healthy
He costs us nothing.. Letting him go would be just plain dumb if it’s to keep a guy like Ward or somebody who hasn’t done sh1t when healthy and given chances
March 7th, 2017 at 12:56 pm
Reps are valuable and should not be wasted in unreliable injury prone players. Next
March 7th, 2017 at 2:18 pm
@DB55- What do those stats say overall about the team?! It’s a rhetorical question! We stink!!!
Leverage for Spence?! This is why the GMC detractors are funny to me. This is our depth. Spence is dispensable (?!). What would be the point in hanging onto to him if we can upgrade easily? Really.
March 7th, 2017 at 7:55 pm
Won’t be that hard to convince spence to resign. He actually grew up a bucs fan. He said that when we drafted him. Said he tried to mold his game after Sapp while in college.
