Dirk Koetter Says He’s Yearning For Jameis Winston To Bash Him
March 5th, 2017Yes, America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, has weaknesses, and Dirk Koetter identified one on SiriusXM NFL Radio last week.
Young Jameis is maturing on the football field, but Koetter wants more.
He wants a higher level of reality thumping through his quarterback’s boundlessly optimistic brain. Koetter can’t wait for Jameis to realize his head coach/playcaller isn’t perfect.
During a discussion on Jameis cutting turnovers, Koetter expanded on Jameis needing to realize every Koetter decision isn’t great.
“I think if you just put your finger on one thing, through Jameis’ whole life, high school, Florida State and now in the NFL, Jameis has never met a play that he doesn’t like,” Koetter said. “”The most exciting day in my life will be when Jameis says to me, ‘Dirk, that was a horrible call. That’s your fault. That was a horrible call.’ Because I always tell him, ‘If it’s a bad call, blame me.’ You know Jameis; he wants to make every play work. That’s a good thing, and at times it can be a bad thing.”
This goes back to Koetter’s chat about Jameis’ maturity, as it relates to proven greats like Matt Ryan.
Eventually, Jameis will evolve into a QB more willing to productively spar with his playcaller, something that can only take the offense to new heights.
Don’t confuse Joe’s message and Koetter’s message. Jameis does make a lot of decisions at the line of scrimmage and his influence in the offense grows steadily. Koetter just wants more — and a little less blind faith in his coaches.

There is a mutual respect and admiration between the two. And this is just year 3.

Unleash the hell on the NFL.
March 5th, 2017 at 12:09 pm
Or embrace heaven and unleash heck. xD
March 5th, 2017 at 12:13 pm
Unleash whatever it takes to throat stomp opponents week in and week out.
March 5th, 2017 at 12:17 pm
How many coaches would say that? Only the good ones!!! So gald these two are paired together. I cant wait to see this season and what progression boyh winston and koetter make
March 5th, 2017 at 12:22 pm
This duo of Koetter and Winston gets better and better.😀👍 Y’all be sure to thank Lovie Smith 😉.
March 5th, 2017 at 12:24 pm
This is why I like Dirk.
March 5th, 2017 at 12:27 pm
Ray Perkins is the only one who owes Lovie a thank you… After Lovie’s pathetic attempt at coaching in Tampa Perkins now is no longer the worst coach in Tampa Bay bucs history. Lovie assumed that honor after embarrassing the game of football with the product he put on the field for two years. Lovie Smith hired is the worst PR stunt in bucs history.
March 5th, 2017 at 12:30 pm
^LOL I can thank Lovie for my early onset balding. And for sucking so badly that we were able to Get Jameis.
I can also thank him for not doing a post firing press conference. Cause I didn’t wanna have to listen that bum say the same tired bs he peddled for 2 straight years in front of the podium.
March 5th, 2017 at 12:33 pm
I think Leeman Bennett still has a stranglehold on worst head coach in Bucs history
March 5th, 2017 at 12:36 pm
For all those who doubt Jason Licht has eyes on drafting a potential Game-Breaker at Tight end. Peep this direct Quote from the man on that very subject.
“We love the way Cam has come on. The way the tight end position is, it’s really two positions; you have the “Y” and the “F”, and the Y’s are hard to find. They are very few and far between, so that’s something that every team is always looking for; a guy that can block and a threat in the passing game.
So you can have two very good tight ends. So, if you draft a tight end high or sign a tight end that has someone like Gronkowski already, that doesn’t mean that they’re unhappy with their starter. You need multiple tight ends; you can do a lot of good things with two tight ends.”
March 5th, 2017 at 12:38 pm
Thoughts on that Joe? Seems to me that it explicitly contradicts all of your theories as to why we shouldn’t.
March 5th, 2017 at 12:44 pm
Got a hunch that Koetter wants the same type of relationship with Jameis that Belichek probably has with Brady and that Payton has with Brees. I’m sure that sometimes the leader on the field has to just say ‘Sorry coach, Plan A just isn’t going to work. Let’s move on to Plan B.’
March 5th, 2017 at 12:44 pm
Colleen Wolfe is Smoking Hot
March 5th, 2017 at 1:11 pm
Richard Williamson is the worst head coach in Bucs history.
March 5th, 2017 at 1:15 pm
A speedster with brate, howard and evans would be sweet with an improved line and martin with a 4th rnd rb
March 5th, 2017 at 1:24 pm
@blake
I love OJ. Also do some research on this micheal Roberts te from Toledo. He is the best blocker in this class and he can be that reiceving te aswell. He had like 12 inch hands too lol
March 5th, 2017 at 1:26 pm
Sorry Blake. Have tried and tried and tried and tried to logically see how the Bucs should draft a TE at No. 19. Just cannot see it.
If the Bucs do go two-TE, they better get a stud RB and they are not available in free agency.
Also cannot justify another TE at No. 19 when the guy you have LED THE LEAGUE in TDs.
Bucs need a WR.
Bucs need a RB.
Bucs need DL help.
Bucs need a center.
Bucs may need a safety.
Those are much more higher on the list than a luxury tight end when you already have the best.
What next, Bucs should draft Deshaun Watson?
March 5th, 2017 at 1:37 pm
That’s interesting, seeing that Jason Licht believes the opposite.
March 5th, 2017 at 1:39 pm
Admin
If u are suggesting that Watson is a Winston caliber QB ur insane.
Because we are all saying that OJ and Engram have higher ceilings than Brate
March 5th, 2017 at 1:40 pm
The Bucs need weapons, and the 3 top TE’s in this draft have very real potential to become just that. Its simple really. The NFL is becoming more and more about creating favorable matchups. And it’s becoming widely considered that hyper athletic TE’s excel at creating mismatches against opposing Linebackers and Safeties.
March 5th, 2017 at 1:44 pm
“So you can have two very good tight ends. So, if you draft a tight end high or sign a tight end that has someone like Gronkowski already, that doesn’t mean that they’re unhappy with their starter. You need multiple tight ends; you can do a lot of good things with two tight ends.”
I implore you Sir Joe. Please re read this excerpt directly from our very own beloved ACDC loving General Manager Jason Licht
March 5th, 2017 at 1:47 pm
admin well said sir. I think Blake may be on to something tho,I mean they have interviewed a few of them. Oj just ain’t been one of them. Seems like to me they have interviewed guys that can be had what is it they’ve been saying for weeks now “in the later rounds”.
March 5th, 2017 at 1:47 pm
😂S@$! too funny.
March 5th, 2017 at 1:54 pm
That’s funny Nos because most of the guys they interviewed were top level tight ends. And multiple team sources have said that they have an interest in Howard.
And Joe, “If the Bucs do go two-TE, they better get a stud RB and they are not available in free agency.”
Didn’t you post a quote from Koetter yesterday saying that this is an incredibly deep running backs class?
March 5th, 2017 at 1:55 pm
And I haven’t seen one person in the Bucs organization say explicitly that they are looking for late round tight ends.
March 5th, 2017 at 2:03 pm
I agree more with joe than I do with blake on the TE debate. I think it boils down to the following. Koetter consistently mentions explosive plays and the need for more. I am not sure a TE is going to fit the explosive play philosophy koetter is preaching regardless of combine stats. I just don’t think it fits his philosophy and play calling. Not to mention Brate has done well in his role. That is not to say the TE can not be an explosive play maker but I think koetter is hungry for a HOME RUN back and WR. .
March 5th, 2017 at 2:11 pm
@admin
I guess you didn’t see both Brate and Cherilous whiff on a screen pass late
in the season.Brate is a very good receiving tight end but has a lot of room to improve in blocking. Hard to hang the best tag on him until he works to improve this important aspect of his game.
March 5th, 2017 at 2:13 pm
Dewey Selmon Says:
“Richard Williamson is the worst head coach in Bucs history.”
Really not his fault though…
March 5th, 2017 at 2:13 pm
EDIT: whiff on blocks for a screen pass.It was so bad announcers highlighted it
during broadcast.
March 5th, 2017 at 2:15 pm
Tmax
I could see Engram as a VERY explosive TE/WR He is bigger than a lot of the WRs in this draft and faster too. Maybe he would switch to wr in the NFL like devin funchess of the panthers. He really opened my eyes yesterday. I wouldn’t mind a trade back from 19 to the early 2nd and pick up an extra 3rd. Take Engram early 2nd (much better value than at 19) and maybe Kamara fall to us in the mid 2nd.
March 5th, 2017 at 2:23 pm
micheal Roberts te from Toledo.
This.
March 5th, 2017 at 2:24 pm
GOAT
Engram impressed me.
March 5th, 2017 at 2:28 pm
@tmaxcon … “I am not sure a TE is going to fit the explosive play philosophy koetter is preaching.” Interesting that Koetter didn’t hesitate for a second to target Gonzales big-time when he coached him in Atlanta. In 2013 Tony was 83 catches for 121 targets (69%) for 859 yds (10 yd/catch average … longest 25 yds). 2012 was pretty similar: 93 catches for 124 targets (75%) for 930 yds (10 yd/catch average … longest again 25 yds). That’s with WRs like Julio Jones, Roddy White & Harry Douglas on the team. Now 25 yds (longest) may not be ‘explosive’ but I’ll take that kind of productivity all day long. If he’s the BPA at #19, I’d love to have OJ Howard on the Bucs. Koetter will probably figure out how to use him.
March 5th, 2017 at 2:33 pm
Tmax, Tight ends create explosive plays frequently in the NFL. Because they are fast enough and quick enough to out run most linebackers, and too big for safeties to cover. Think about all the times the Greg Olson and Jimmy Graham destroyed our defenses over the years. And tell me TE’s can’t be explosive.
O.J. Howard 6’5 & 3/4 251 and ran a 4.51 40 with a 30″ and 10’1 broad jump.
Evan Engram 6’3 235 and ran a 4.42( 5th fastest of the entire combine ) with a 36″ vert and 10’5 broad jump.
And lastly David Njoku 6’4 245 ran a 4.64 but made up for it with a 37.5″ vert and an extremely impressive 11’2 broad.
All 3 of these guys made explosive plays in college. And all 3 guys have the physical tools to do so in the NFL.
The thing that separates O.J. from the group is that he also has the potential to be a dominant blocker right away, as well as being a physical freak.
March 5th, 2017 at 2:34 pm
Gonzales is a once in a lifetime player hardly a fair example but I get your point about koetter being able to figure out how to use a player. I am not sold on TE at 19 at all. I’d rather a trade down or up just don’t think mid first round bucs need a TE at this stage and current roster makeup.
March 5th, 2017 at 2:35 pm
@ Joe I’d rather have Kareem Hunt from Toledo and a top flight tight end
March 5th, 2017 at 2:38 pm
Blake_bucsfan
I get that. I am not buying Howard or any TE at 19. I fully understand TE can make explosive plays but there are very few tony gonzales and gronks out there making those plays I’d rather take my chances at an explosive WR or HOME RUN Back Cook please than I would with a conservative approach with a TE. Nothing against howard but I don’t like TE at 19 given this roster make up. too many holes on both offense and defense… Fragile 3 at DT will hurt bucs next year and the other desperate needs at Center, Right Tackle, Safety, DT and CB.
March 5th, 2017 at 2:44 pm
Tmax Cook ran a 4.49 at 210, O.J. ran 2 100th’s of a second slower weighing 40 pounds heavier.
Looks like O.J has just as much homerun potential as cook.
March 5th, 2017 at 2:48 pm
Force equals Mass times acceleration homie.
March 5th, 2017 at 2:59 pm
come on blake,
If i may borrow one of Joe’s standard responses… I appreciate your passion but are you seriously going to attempt to argue Howard is more of a home run threat than cook… again, I appreciate your passion but Cook is a proven home run back… It’s ok to be wrong man but to go all delusional is worrisome.
March 5th, 2017 at 3:04 pm
No, I said he has the potential to be the same kind of home run threat. Seeing that they run at virtually the same speed.
How is that delusional?
March 5th, 2017 at 3:04 pm
Buc1987, You are right, it wasn’t really his fault. Those were some awful times.
March 5th, 2017 at 3:12 pm
You also have to factor in elusiveness and agility when discussing a home run threat. Not really fair to compare Howard to any RB as far as a “home run threat” is concerned
March 5th, 2017 at 3:13 pm
There are a whole slew of running backs that put up better numbers than cook and they played on worse teams. I’m not knocking cook but one of the reasons he’s rated so highly is he played on a really good team with multiple threats. Just my opinion
March 5th, 2017 at 3:27 pm
@Joey you also gotta consider that there are less people to evade in the open field. Tight ends don’t have to run through 8 defenders in the box to get 30 yards down field. You get O.J. a ball in stride down the field and he can take it to the house. He’s shown that capability numerous times in his tenure with the Tide.
March 5th, 2017 at 4:47 pm
So koetter really just wants Jameis to be like he was with jimbo lol. I’m sure Jameis had that horrible call stuff in mind when at fsu
March 5th, 2017 at 6:02 pm
That man said oj more explosive than Dalvin. I almost lost my milk yo 😂. SB says Dalvin played on better team with multiple threats??? That’s peculier who were these threats sirs???
March 5th, 2017 at 6:05 pm
Joeypoppems, I like Blake’s analogy (force = mass x acceleration). Give me a 6’6″ OJ Howard weighing 250 lbs making a middle-of-the-field catch in stride down the seam and I like his chances of taking it to the house against any 180-190 lb CB or even a 200-210 lb safety.
March 5th, 2017 at 6:29 pm
@NosBos When did I say more explosive? I mean I broke it down pretty simply. They both ran essentially the same speed. So why is hard to think that O.J. is just as much of a Home-run threat?
March 5th, 2017 at 7:43 pm
I really don’t care who we draft as long as they end up being good, but drafting OJ isn’t as crazy as it sounds. Why do we keep acting like Brate is a top 5 TE? He is the TE version of a possession receiver. He has good hands, but lacks field stretching speed. Yes, he led TEs in TDs. Blount led RBs in TDs…is he the best RB in the league? Didn’t think so. I love Brate, and I don’t want him to leave if we do draft OJ, but let’s not act like Brate is all-pro.
March 5th, 2017 at 10:31 pm
Building a Wall! That is what the Bucs should be focused on! Me if the fans can’t get past regurgitating Lovie maybe be some in the locker room have the same problem! Get Lovies balls out your mouth…go and wash your mouth out and get behind your present TEAM. … Build a Wall….but not in Mexico dumb a$$!!
March 14th, 2017 at 4:39 am
Stop crying about Lovie he is gone,i suspect the carping at Lovie is racially motivated, after all most of you folks live in the deep south not socially tolerant Seattle
