Koetter Frightened About Safeties
March 1st, 2017Bucs coach Dirk Koetter is fretting.
Sure, many football coaches wring their hands over pseudo problems and make-believe issues. For Koetter, the secondary of the Bucs frightens him and not because of its play.
No, it’s not the play that Koetter is worried about, but what the immediate future is for the safeties.
Koetter has a real concern that in the next few weeks, the Bucs, with limited depth at safety, could lose two in free agency, including a starter.
“We don’t have bodies at safety right now,” Koetter said. “We have Keith Tandy under contract and he played very well at the end of the year. Chris Conte, Bradley McDougald, they are both free agents right now. We may have to find another starting safety and probably two safties.”
So for those Bucs fans that cry for a new safety or two, Koetter hears your voices.
This was the first Joe had heard that the Bucs may be looking for multiple safeties, as if Koetter fears Conte and McDougald play elsewhere in 2017.

If someone couldn’t watch the games and realize that they need multiple help at Safety then I don’t know what they were watching. Our Safety is bottom 5 in the league, a league now built on passing games.
Helen Keller could see this, c’mon.

Well whe you play 2 safeties and you only have 1 on the roster total, it should be a concern

Mark Barron.

This is a concern. We’re better off with all 3 signed, but to have only one under contract, that’s scary. And it’s not like Tandy is an Eric Berry type either. We definitely need to address these positions ASAP.

hopefully whatever beer jason licht is guzzling during his scouting of the team tells him that the bucs need safety and OL help….or go grab a kicker and an undersized corner to defend benjamin and julio

Dusty…like the sarcasm, wonder what a 3rd round and 4th round pick is worth these days, last year we got the best kicker in college football history, unfortunately that translated to the worst kicker in the NFL

Joe is the only person on earth who doesn’t think the Bucs have safety issues.
March 1st, 2017 at 3:18 pm
That weird, because I heard about it last offseason!!!!!!

Conte was awful – he single handedly lost that Broncos game with his moronic penalties and poor coverage. For every good play Conte made, and he made a few, he’d make at least 5 bad plays. Tandy meanwhile seems to make more plays than mistakes and I’d completely give him the shot to start over bothering to bring Conte back. Meanwhile the team really needs two new safeties because we just don’t know if Tandy is an every game starter or not – I happen to think he is but wouldn’t bet much on that.

Resign Bradley Mcdougald if he’s not looking for stupid money and then there are quite literally at least twenty FA Safeties that are better than Chris Conte. Plus this draft is deep enough at Safety that I think you can get a pretty good one in the 4th round.

Please TONY JEFFERSON!!! re-sign McDougald as back up.
March 1st, 2017 at 3:53 pm
Our S play was worse than our CB play all year imo.
Tandy played well in coverage down the stretch but is not great in run support due to his limited size. McDougald is OK in run support and pretty bad in coverage it seemed most weeks outside of the Seattle game.
Either way we have no stud or anything close to one there imo

SOEbuc I’m with you 100%

Sign Tony Jefferson – draft Budda Baker in the 2nd rd.
Boom – Weakness turned into an instant strength.

@pickgrin
I have been telling you for 2 weeks that budda baker will NEVER make it out of the 1st round. The guy is gonna blow up at the combine.

Tony Jefferson is a guy I have been begging for for weeks. We NEED this guy.

I always felt Safety was one of the biggest needs this off season. My needs order was a bit different than most.
RB
Safety
WR
OLine
TE
CB
Dline
In that order! I don’t feel the D-Line is in as bad of shape as some have made it out to be. Mainly with the return of Jaq Smith returning to the line up which should increase the QB pressure across the board. But we really need a Play maker in the out field we can rely on! Personally i wish we could find a player who was a mashup of Tandy and McDougal that would be ideal!

1. Tony Jefferson
2. Barry Church.

And here joe was just writing about how safety wasnt a big need… i wonder which one we should believe???
March 1st, 2017 at 9:56 pm
As for your last paragraph joe, they are not under contract. So no, koetter does not expect them to be back. Not until they are under contract. If they arent under contract they can leave whether the bucs want them back or not. The power is in the players hands in that situation. Im sure the bucs are trying to get a deal done with McDougald, but until he signs the dotted line, the bucs should be prepared for life without him.
March 1st, 2017 at 10:31 pm
Grab Tony Jefferson n bring back Darrell Revis n move him to safety, then problem solved at safety. These two would b a big upgrade over McDougal n Conte. Y folks heads over heel for McDougal n Conte to return don’t make sense to me. One is garbage, n the other is garbage can.

agree with Koetter. Safety is a primary issue. When Ryan Smith didnt turn into a saftety as projected, it kind of threw a kink in things. This is as big of a need as WR in my mind. Even if we resign McDougald, which I’m in favor of, we still need one maybe two more on the roster.
March 2nd, 2017 at 11:26 am
resign mcdougal, sign either j.cyprian or t.jefferson and draft marcus maye out of uf or Harrison out of bama….GO BUCS!!!!
