There’s still hope for the Mike Glennon Mob.
On March 1, 2017, Glennon remains on the Buccaneers’ official wish list.
General manager Jason Licht hopped on SiriusXM NFL Radio this morning from the NFL Scouting Combine and said Glennon was offered a contract extension by the Bucs “quite a while ago” but declined it.
Earlier in the morning, Licht gave his take on Glennon in the open market.
“I mean, we’d love to have Mike back in a perfect scenario,” Licht said. “It’s going to depend on, I think for him, he’s going to have some opportunities, where it is, what the landscape is there, how good of a chance he’s going to have to start there, but we’d love to have him back.”
Joe has written many times that Glennon is unlikely to find anyone willing to let him compete as a starter. He’s a long shot with the Jets and Bears.
Glennon, Joe believes, would be very wise to take the $5 million annually the Bucs are likely offering and ride the good life as a backup to America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, who seems destined for an injury because of how he sacrifices his body.

I thunk Glennon can be on the same level as Christian Hackenberg and Bryce Petty with the Jets. Wouldn’t say he is a longshot there.

I would love to have Glennon continue to be our backup QB. But if someone over pays to have him compete for QB1, we get a compensatory pick right?? Offering a contract that he declined could be a strategic play for that comp pick. Just a thought, I don’t know how that works.

The Patriots back up played in two games….there’s a market for Glennon. And this idea that he’s assured $5million per year to be a back up….Look around, nobody is assured of anything but the signing bonus and first year or two of the contract. He’s a free agent, it’s stupid to pretend he should ignore that because he can be a “guaranteed” back up to Winston. These guys only get a shot at big money contracts once…if it all.

Nope marine that’s not how it works. What the Bucs do in free agency plays a huge part in that. The Bucs need some upgrades via FA which will nullify any chance of a compensatory pick.

@Realist- Dang man! What a stark realization. When you put it in those terms they should be trying to get that deal done. I would not be comfortable, or as comfortable, with Ryan Griffin coming in as JW’s back-up.

@BKNY- I think Washington is going to trade Cousins to SF. Call it speculation, but why wouldn’t they lock him up to a long-term deal? Plus, Shanahan and Cousins have a rapport.
If my conspiracy is false, then yes, SF could be a possibility.

Joe sometimes I wonder (actually most of the time) how you even got maintain to keep this job. Glennon as of today would easily be the best QB on either Chicago’s or the Jets roster. Glennon has proven he can play In this league if only someone would put a team around him and not that trash that Schiano put him in. Sean Payton who’s opinion I value way more then I ever will yours Joe also seems to agree with me!

Houston seems like the likely landing spot for Romo and I think Arizona might be the most likely spot other than the Bucs for Glennon. Arizona because Glennon sees an older starter who will retire sooner rather than later so he gets a chance to be a future starter. For Arizona they dont see anyone else who can be that guy to carry the position for a year or two while they find their next star QB. It’s really a perfect match for them both.

if he goes, it means someone has offered him over $7 mil annually for multiple years and a chance to start. personally i would be shocked if he’s not making at least what Ryan Fitzpatrick made last year, and for whatever it’s worth i absolutely think he is more deserving of brock osweiler money than brock osweiler was

Glennon has to be careful because he can sign with a team like Cleveland or the Jets (thinking he’ll start), then they can turn around a draft a QB and start him right away. Most of us like Glennon, but most of us also know he’s not going to light the world on fire with his play. I think he can be a starting QB on the perfect team, but I don’t see him as a player that any franchise is going to build around. That’s just the way I see it, and I would hate for him to be a backup in Cleveland instead of backing up a perennial playoff team like the Bucs. I don’t think he returns and I hope he does well wherever he goes, but the grass is not always greener.

I was on the Mariota bandwagon just like Koetter but just like Koetter Jameis has won me over with his tired less dedication to his craft and to wanting to be the best ever. There are things needs to Improve on specifically with his accuracy but there’s no doubt in my mind with his work ethic and dedication he will correct those things! Winston is obviously Uber talented and on a different level then Glennon but when a few experts describe Glennon as a poor man’s Matt Ryan from what I have seen and I’ve watched every game Glennon had played in a Bucs uniform he was more talented then Joe remotely likes to give him credit for

When I was young….a LONG time ago…only a few of the Cincinnati Reds earned their living fulltime as baseball players. Most of the guys had to get second jobs in the off season to make ends truly meet…yeah that was back in the ’50’s and times have changed dramatically.
I like Mike Glennon…agree with Hawaiian’s assessment…not a true franchise qb but certainly capable of winning with the right team that has a great defense.
As far as “jobs” go…there is NO bad job in the NFL. Mike has made two million for the past two seasons…averaging one million per year. That will clearly go up no matter where he signs.
Mike is a smart young man. You have to be a dullard to earn two million in two years and NOT be set for life!!! Do we suppose he’s been comped meals and drinks if he wishes when he goes out on the town…offered special deals on his car.
My point is simple. I just do not get the discussions of money…it’s just scorekeeping at this point because they are ALL set for life!!!
Do the math. Earn 5 million over your short career and the return even if you paid half in taxes…which they do NOT…wealthy people have great accountants and can even write off ONE BILLION in taxes…but say you have 2.5 million left and only get a return of 5%…pretty lame…you’d still have $125,000 annually without ever lifting a finger.
When Glennon signs his next contract his investments will pay over one million annually for the REST OF HIS LIFE. Think about what that means.

He deserves a shot to start if a anyone is willing to offer the chance. His results have been mixed but he’d be a better option than Brock O in Houston. He could be a good stop gap for the Bears run heavy offense. If he doesn’t have a chance to start, I’d love to see him stick around in Tampa. He’s a great guy, great team guy and could develop with the right coaching staff.

I’d love to have Glennon back but I can’t believe after the huge money given to someone like Brock, who is Mike Glennon without any talent, I can’t believe no one will make a bid on the guy, certainly not when you’re talking about only having to beat more than $5-mil a year. With that said Brock being a complete disaster, it might make those that considered Glennon back off, but I watched both and while I wasn’t a big Glennon fan by any means, he was much better than Brock when he played and had a lot more tape. I think someone will give him $9-12/mil contract which they can get out of cheaply after a year, or keep him if he proves himself. I’ll be shocked, in a good way, if the Bucs manage to keep Glennon at $5/mil. I think Glennon’s ceiling is being an average ball-control game manager QB, which still might make him a top 25 QB in the league at his peak – if you can have that AND Winston, that’s a big big get if you’re expecting to make a serious playoff run.

I don’t want him back at all. I want backup situations like the Pats have year after year. If he plays, he becomes instant trade value because the team is good enough to win with him.
Glennon will NEVER be a winner. Not enough hunger in him.

One of the main reasons I wanted Schiano fired is because I knew he was going to force Glennon down our throats and try and convince he was a legitimate starter. As a guy who watched all of his play I can say unequivically he is not. If he gets a chance to start for some crappy franchise he will be a stop gap reliever while they try to find their real QB. He will never be someone’s long term answer and would be much better off taking guaranteed money to carry a clip board for the next 10 years and make a nice living doing it. Say he ends up in a place like NY. They will draft a QB likely within a year or two after Glennon’s arrival. If he performs poorly he may be out of the league for good after just two years. If he carries a clip board he could last 10 years and make a nice living doing so.

I think you really underestimate how desperate NFL teams are to have quality starting QB’s. I also think you really underestimate how good Glennon could be for a team that has a decent running game to help him.

Is he a franchise QB? Maybe, probably not quite. Is he good enough to be a bridge starter while a young guy is being groomed? Absolutely. Look at how long guys like Josh McCown and Ryan Fitzpatrick have been around and started for teams.
He could easily get a $7 or $8 million dollar per year contract if a team has done their homework on him.

People must forget how bad of a team the Bucs were when Mike Glennon was starting for them not to mention it was only his rookie and second years that he had any chances to start. And if you look at his stats on that bad team considering he started in the NFL right away, his numbers were quite impressive. His amount of td passes doubled his interceptions. Then when they put that veteran qb who they signed from Chicago named Josh McCown he was absolutely terrible playing much worse than the inexperienced Glennon. But McCown had a great year with Chicago the year before. One more note. If you compare Glennon’s stats to Winston’s stats, Glennon has a better td to int ratio and their career qb ratings are almost identical (Winston 85.2 Glennon 84.6) and once again Glennon played with worse talent around him. So why are so many fans bashing Glennon. If anything, career wise he’s been just as good as Winston with less talent to work with.
