Derrick Brooks On Jameis: “That’s What He’s Not Going To Do”
February 26th, 2017Buccaneers icon Derrick Brooks spoke up today about last week’s media skewering of America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston.
Of course, Joe was paying attention.
It helped that Joe was in the room as Brooks dove into the subject with former Bucs guard Ian Beckles (1990-1996) live on 102.5 FM.
Brooks explained that he meets with Jameis face to face during most weeks. And, per Brooks, the two were scheduled to meet the day Tampa Bay Times columnist Tom Jones blasted Jameis for what Jones claimed was “irresponsible” sexist commentary to elementary school children. Jameis was flamed by Jones for two sentences during a 40-minute presentation meant to inspire youth achievement.
For those unaware, Jones’ sharp finger-wagging at Jameis turned into a national flurry of attacks on Jameis, which continued on ESPN this morning.
“That’s the fishbowl you live in,” Brooks said he told Jameis.
Brooks express any negativity toward Jones or the media at large, rather, he explained that he talked to Jameis about how this experience can be one of growth and development.
Brooks said he advised Jameis to explore different techniques when appealing to a young audience, such as an 8-to-10 minute intense presentation followed by fun interaction, rather than a long speech like Jameis made. There were other suggestions, Brooks shared, including Jameis bringing a teammate each time he’s out in the community.
“Don’t go into a turtle shell” from one bad experience, Brooks said he advised Jameis.
Beckles asked Brooks about Jamies cutting back on volunteering because of what happened, and Brooks replied, “That’s what he’s not going to do.”
First, Joe was pleased to learn Brooks is counseling Jameis regularly year-round. What a fantastic, unique benefit for Jameis. Could there be a better local role model/mentor for Jameis?
Second, Joe was encouraged to hear Brooks say Jameis will not mail it in on community appearances because he got burned.
Jameis will need to be more careful, though, and there are several checks and balances he can implement to insure there is less blood in the water for the media sharks.
(Joe will have more from Brooks tomorrow.)
February 26th, 2017 at 4:43 pm
In this setting. I would like for Jameis to just be Jameis everybody else gets to say how they feel. Speak your mind. And people shouldn’t be skewered for there opinions if it doesn’t agree with there own that’s lame. People are real sensitive these days. And who is Tom Jones to wag his finger.lol
February 26th, 2017 at 4:49 pm
A lot of people still hate you Jameis and will try to knock you down a notch every chance they get. But theres always going to be those of us who love you and appreciate you who will outnumber them. Rise above and keep going Brother.
February 26th, 2017 at 4:51 pm
It’s sad that something like that got blown way out of proportion. Jameis is a much better man than me. I’d probably cutoff all interactions with the public and media and just focus on football and cashing those checks. Any criticism from that point on would only be on what they see on the field and the fact that I’m not giving back to the community.
February 26th, 2017 at 5:31 pm
I’m not surprised he’s going to keep on volunteering but I hope he doesn’t at that school.
February 26th, 2017 at 5:46 pm
Can’t believe all the hate for Jameis by some of the media. You would think the kid was a conservative or something.
February 26th, 2017 at 5:49 pm
This is why D Brooks should be on the Bucs Mt Rushmore. He was not only a stud linebacker and leader for our Bucs, but also a tremendous asset to the organization long term despite the disrespectful way that ownership let him go as a player. This guy is a true life long Buc and privilege that the Tampa Bay area shouldn’t take for granted.
Joe, anything in Brooks is an automatic click for me. Thanks for this read.
February 26th, 2017 at 5:54 pm
Columnist Tom Jones is an Assh***, who thrives on political correctness… I would deny this pri*k all media access to the Bucs events and all Players… Give the Tampa Bay Times the same treatment that Trump passes along to Fake News Liars from the Main Stream around D.C.
February 26th, 2017 at 6:07 pm
this guy needs to be the gm
February 26th, 2017 at 6:13 pm
Jameis should probably get some education about sexism… He didn’t mis-speak or use the wrong words. The problem was he was speaking from his own values, which are apparently rooted in outdated notions of gender. It is not acceptable for him to tell boys to be strong and women to be quiet. He needs to learn why that’s not an OK message to give to kids.
February 26th, 2017 at 6:24 pm
Florio gets it:

February 26th, 2017 at 6:45 pm
I’d like to follow this Tom Jones jerk around and see how many sexist, racist, and other “ist” things he says.
February 26th, 2017 at 6:50 pm
First, Joe was pleased to learn Brooks is counseling Jameis regularly year-round. What a fantastic, unique benefit for Jameis. Could there be a better local role model/mentor for Jameis?
…………
I went to UF. Played ball there too for a year. I played with E. Smith. I was on the other side of the ball but I can say that if I played for UF now and Emmit Smith were counseling me weekly I would listen with care. Brooks and Jameis’ being from FSU helps more than alot of people would believe.
February 26th, 2017 at 6:57 pm
The Times should probably get some education about racism. Tom Jones did not misspeak or use the wrong words. The problem is that they are speaking from their notions of St. Petersburg society.
It is not acceptable for them to tell readers to f*** themselves while the whole of the ownership of the paper, plus the employees and Tom Jones himself, have not set foot in that schoolroom once over the last decade. Not that any student would want to have the fishrag there.
It must suck for a writer and a paper to be so despised. But Jones and his crew earned that prize by being despicable.
February 26th, 2017 at 7:16 pm
The one thing I don’t miss about Tampa is the bubba the love sponge media…. Tom Jones…. never has been worth the lost time of clicking one of his articles… hope this is the end of him….. IMO
February 26th, 2017 at 7:25 pm
but I hope he doesn’t at that school.
Ocala…why would you say that. It wasn’t the school that made any fuss it was simply the article written by Jones.
Wow…just wow…I understand the upset over that article but really..many of you guys are ready to just shiiit on American values…such as everybody being entitled to their own opinion. Bubba the Love Sponge…really? A dude who made his bones doing things like castrating a pig live on the air…let’s hear the squealing eh….what has happened to any semblance of class in this nation?
Disagree with Jones…it’s America…but trying to censor people is UN American…the press is not the enemy of America…the press gets things right and sometimes gets things wrong…If I told you which of the media makes the most mistakes you’d then get on me for picking on your favorite cable news station.
This is NOT why I freaking went to Vietnam while others “fought their war against STD’s in Manhattan”!
February 26th, 2017 at 7:39 pm
I said this At least once a year for the past 5 years. Here is Spbf, JBF’s voice of reason. Along with checks and balances you may not want to face. Say what you want but the man faces EVERYthing here with honesty. Like him or not you can’t dispute his integrity.
February 26th, 2017 at 8:17 pm
StPete Bucs fan
The reason I say don’t go back to that school is because it was reported that a teacher from the school didn’t say anything to Jamies but called to complain to the TB Times.
If I was advising Jamies I would recommend he go to tons of other places but I would avoid that school.
February 26th, 2017 at 8:27 pm
Tom jones is why 620 got rid of his ass
February 26th, 2017 at 8:30 pm
Spbf. Thank you for your service and proving my point. Bubba used a negative classless spin on everything he did just to make a name for himself. I’m sorry if you didn’t understand that part of my point. I personally have grown tired of his (t jones) type of hate media that has now put a negative spin on a good kid trying to be a positive influence to young kids…..my bad .
February 26th, 2017 at 8:44 pm
StPete, I don’t disagree with you often (OK, probably never before) but in this case Jones struck a very raw nerve with a lot of Bucs fans. Jameis has been through a LOT of scrutiny for someone who’s only 23 yrs old. Obviously he’s no saint, but I’ve worked with a LOT of young people in my lifetime, and although you & I are about the same age, I can say with some confidence that none of them were saints. And neither was I, and probably neither were you. And neither was Tom Jones I’d surmise. I’m sorry, but what Jones did wasn’t good reporting or good journalism; it was just sensationalism. Jameis was on a mission to do good, to help some youngsters many of whom need help. Jones could’ve focused on that mission, and noted the ‘incident’ … but he didn’t. He focused almost totally instead on that short few seconds and blew off the rest of what Jameis was trying to accomplish with those kids. Shame on Jones far as I’m concerned.
Derek Brooks has given Jameis some outstanding guidance I think based on what Joe reported. Joe’s sentence “Brooks said he advised Jameis to explore different techniques when appealing to a young audience, such as an 8-to-10 minute intense presentation followed by fun interaction, rather than a long speech like Jameis made” is spot on far as I’m concerned. But again, that’s just a learning process for young players like Jameis. He’ll learn from this episode in his life and become a better man for it. I’m wondering if Tom Jones will be able to say the same.
February 26th, 2017 at 9:11 pm
Young Jameis needs to realize the world is soft now, they criticize every single word a professional says…I have no problem with it, I know what he was trying to do…I speak in front of large groups every week and can understand when people are bored… Everyone women I have had this conversation with has no problem with it and realizes the media blows every word out of proportion. Just sucks, makes him look bad when he isn’t. Does more community service than anybody else in the greater Tampa Bay Area but never gets recognized.
February 26th, 2017 at 9:19 pm
Bucs_365 … “main stream society” is idiotic … the word of God which Jameis sincerely believes in will never be outdated, period. It doesn’t matter if all of America becomes liberal, anti-Christ nutjobs, Jameis doesn’t need to “update” his convictions to please them … or anyone else!
I for one hope Jameis will NEVER be co-opted by the media or liberal masses like many professing Christian athletes have been in the past and that he just remains true to himself and his Biblical beliefs no matter what anyone says.
Everyone should be allowed to “believe” and “think” whatever they want, be it anti-Biblical, Biblical, globalist, nationalist, etc., etc., etc., there should never be “thought police”!
February 26th, 2017 at 9:58 pm
Seems like I just read about jameis driving early every morning to Orlando to get in conditioning work and also takes the time to talk to school children . the young man is trying to do the right thing and stay out of trouble in the offseason and better himself and he gets ripped to shred. Thankfully brooks is there to be a voice of reason and someone worthy of respect to listen to
February 26th, 2017 at 10:03 pm
One again.
F— you Tom Jones.
February 26th, 2017 at 10:25 pm
Fokt u tom jones, crying out loud, Jameis spends his free time with elementary kids and gets bs for not being politically correct–how fokt up Jameis is a good person who has shown that through his actions–I am proud of Jameis and the way he has grown up in last couple years, I am a woman 50+ y/old, have no problem with this episode at all, he is not perfect and saying the perfect thing at all times is unrealistic.
February 26th, 2017 at 10:27 pm
Well said NFLNut.
February 26th, 2017 at 10:29 pm
@NFLNut-
“Word of god?”
So keeping women silent is the “word of god”? Okay, kreisteyfoek… we know who the problem is. If that’s what the bible is to you, you can shove it.
February 26th, 2017 at 10:30 pm
This version of kreistey worship is making our country stupider by the day.
February 26th, 2017 at 10:33 pm
I hope you guys don’t have daughters. I feel sorry for them.
February 26th, 2017 at 11:08 pm
Bucs_365 … if you believe in “context” Jameis was not saying that he personally believes women should be silent, just that society in general views women as the quiet, gentle ones and men as the strong ones and he wanted the young boys there to understand they can be strong and accomplish their dreams and there was NOTHING wrong with Jameis’ message at all.
Look at Miko Grimes Tweets on the issue … if there is one woman that is NOT quiet or gentle, let alone “silent”, it is Miko, and her past comments on Ryan Tannehil prove she has no problem absolutely destroying a QB who happens to play on the same team as her husband … and Miko said Jameis did nothing wrong and should have refused to apologize at all!
Now, as far as the word of God goes … it’s pretty clear that BOTH men and women should be slow to speak and quick to hear, that both men and women should speak edifying words and that both men and women should love everyone, even their enemies.
What I’m saying is that it’s clear Jameis is a devout Christian and that he takes the word of God literally and seriously and therefore even if he did say, “I think women should be quiet and gentle”, which he did not say, that such would be a truthful and Biblical statement as everyone should be such.
If you really think it’s wrong to promote the idea that people should think before they speak, judge righteously rather than quickly and unrighteously and use common sense rather than run with the masses in their “guilty until proven innocent” philosophy, we have nothing more to talk about as I simply have no respect for your ideas and can just “agree to disagree”.
I just don’t like blatant hypocrisy and idiocy. Many of the same people that are killing Jameis for saying something they perceive as “politically incorrect” are the same people promoting Planned Parenthood who was founded by Margaret Sanger, a woman who said, “We do not want word to go out that we want to exterminate the negro population”.
I mean, come on! The idiocy and hypocrisy is just too much to take some times …
February 26th, 2017 at 11:12 pm
Bucs_365 … Cute and childish insult about “daughters” … I have four daughters and every one of them is amazing , happy and just plain awesome! My eldest, after being homeschooled since 1st grade earned a 50% academic scholarship to college at just 16 years old!
My girls are independent thinkers that could out debate many college profs on a myriad of issues … they aren’t dumbed-down females who allow the main stream media to think for them, get “triggered” when they come up against ideas foreign to them, or run for a “safe space” because they’re too weak to handle their business and be tough … and yes, every single one of them is a born again Chrisitan who loves Jesus Christ more than anything!
February 26th, 2017 at 11:36 pm
Been disgusted by the hypocritical bullaasht this week. Played the vid of the actual speech to my wife after she read the gossip on the FacePlace and started the finger wag saying “hey isn’t that your boy?”…and holy shnittt I went to bat.
I forget often how badly damaged this man’s reputation is for a crime he has not even been charged with. I mean this is the worst of us. So thankful Winston is a man driven by more than what is carelessly publicized in dying media rags that wonder why they are no longer relevant.
Winston jerseys on order go my entire extended family.
February 26th, 2017 at 11:47 pm
It’s not as if Jameis was telling the girls to sit down & shut up, and that they were weak.
He was trying to convey a very important message to the kids, that they can quote “do anything I put my mind to.”
He noticed some boys losing interest, so he wanted to regain their attention. Simple as that. This entire story is a non issue.
The social justice warriors that really have a problem with this are just weak minded individuals that are members of the modern cult of outrage. They are all special snowflakes that can’t mentally handle views and statements that do not perfectly align with there own. Even tho they have no problem employing the lowest form of argument, which is hurling baseless insults, often times accompanied by profanity.
Like this famous irl troll video compilation. Keep in mind this is some nsfw comedy gold.

Dallas,
Finally one of your posts that I actually agree with and laud.
February 26th, 2017 at 11:52 pm
People need to stop being so sensitive in the first place. These kids have parental figures who can clarify anything the kids don’t get or are offended by. Quitcha’bitchin
February 26th, 2017 at 11:52 pm
Misspoke but my wife who could care less about football, the Bucs or sports in general watched the piece of the speech in context and understood with obvious recognition that it is an opportunistic reach by lousy local media. Never particularly cared either way about Tom Jones after reading him and hearing him on radio for years after Sileo but he can now eat a bag of dcks.
No one reads the paper anyway and he is just one more practical reason not to.
February 27th, 2017 at 12:00 am
I think this now proves more media, not less, is the key to our salvation.
Even if they choose to incessantly bring up inane trivia like what one of the many music artists our lousy GM chooses to listen to!
February 27th, 2017 at 12:11 am
Go to bed PhallusBuc.
February 27th, 2017 at 12:19 am
Blake I’m ready to pontificate all night if you are?!!
February 27th, 2017 at 12:23 am
I have no doubt you are ready to pornificate all night PhallusBuc.
February 27th, 2017 at 12:25 am
Lol jking, but I really wish you would see the Licht, guess it’s gonna take another year of savvy decisions, and limited mistakes for Jason Licht to work on.
If I were you I would stop ragging on Licht, and be praying for him to hit another Grand slam.
February 27th, 2017 at 12:38 am
Blake- not much of a hope and a prayer guy because I live in the real world where the Bucs haven’t won a playoff game in 15 years and Jason Licht has a rare few solid decisions on his resume. Keep me posted if you uncover a quality choice of Buccaneer resources I have not yet considered?
February 27th, 2017 at 12:52 am
Rare Few? Ok, throw out how you feel about Donovan Smith, but many do consider him to be a solid, growing left tackle.
And you have Jameis Winston( clearly made the right choice over Mariota ), Mike Evans, Kwon Alexander, Ali Marpet, Kevin Pamphile ( highly versatile, durable, praised by Koetter as being the best performing lineman through the half way point ), Cameron Brate ( Undrafted guy off the street, tied for most TD receptions by a tight end ), Adam Humphries ( developing into a solid slot guy ), Jacquizz Rodgers ( lead the team in ypc and rushing yards off the street ), Rob Ayers ( helped whip the D into shape ) Vernon Hargreaves, Brent Grimes, Noah spence, Jac Smith( best pass rusher when healthy ), Ryan Russel, Howard Jones, Charles Sims ( 1000 yards from scrimmage in 2015, solid 3rd down back when healthy ), Joe Hawley( played better in 2015, but has the heart of a warrior and played through seemingly nonstop knee injuries in 2016 and wasn’t god awful).
Jason Licht has his miss-steps and warts just like any GM. But he is improving our roster from top to bottom. And has improved his team from 2-14 to 9-7, and is truly 1 home-run offseason away from building a roster poised for a deep playoff run.
And you should never discount the immeasurable power of faith and hope my friend. They can be your salvation.
February 27th, 2017 at 1:02 am
@Joe
Hope you weren’t including Tom Jones in the closing “media sharks” comment.
Hopeless pathetic bottom feeder is his category.
February 27th, 2017 at 1:30 am
Until the Glazers, Mr Licht and the bucs organization as a whole address the needs to create a PERRENIAL PLAYOFF WINNING TEAM, how is anyone, especially Joe– pleased with a damn thing that goes on in regards to this team???
Explain????
Who gives a flying f”$&$+#9# rats as$$$ if we can’t even make the sorry soft new England gimmick that is the nfl playoffs?
I’m sorry but no argument is valid until WINNING BECOMES THE ONLY RELEVENT MATTER
February 27th, 2017 at 1:38 am
Have you seen this team play since Chucky was jettisoned? Nine wins feels like a Super Bowl run. They have a franchise quarterback — the best the this franchise has ever had, has a coach who seems to have a clue to what he is doing, have a fantastic young set of budding stars highlighted by Mike Evans.
The future is bright. Far, far different when lazy Lovie tried to hoodwink fans (and the Glazers).
February 27th, 2017 at 1:57 am
Greetings from across the pond.
Unfortunately the reaction of Jones and the other media is the standard of journalism we experience today. It is cheap journalism, always looking for a negative that can be exploited. As the printed media has attempted to survive in an ever diminishing landscape they have found political correctness to be a rich source of “sensationalist news”.
Unfortunately, the days of the professional, dedicated news reporter is long gone and been replaced by a gutter instinct news hack system fighting for survival. It is the same standard of journalism over here in many cases.
What Jameis said was in reality a “no big deal”. All it required was either a teacher or school head to have a quiet word with Jameis afterwards. I doubt the kids thought that Jameis was being sexist. They were probably so excited at having him there that everything else was secondary. I doubt that any child rushed home to their parents to spill the beans about Jameis failure.
Speck and log in your eye comes to mind.
February 27th, 2017 at 7:36 am
Must be nice to be a paragon of virtue like Jones. I gave up on his sermons long ago ( actually gave up on that whole rag) but he is also the reason I turned off their failed radio show. He comes off like a sanctimonious thought cop. #3 will live and learn and be just fine.
February 27th, 2017 at 8:15 am
Hey Jameis, your buddy Sean here. Thanks for going and talking to the kids at the schools. We need a lot more people like you out there. Appreciate what you’re doing for our community!
February 27th, 2017 at 3:53 pm
Jameis Winton has come a long way in two years but he has a long way to go. Along with learning to throw the check downs, move in the pocket and protect himself by sliding, he needs to become “Jameis the diplomat Winston.”
It easy for us on Joe Bucs fan to say who is this Tom Jones guy to pass judgment, he’s the reporter and as the adage goes the reporter always has the last word. It easy to point to your kids and say they can debate a college professor on a variety of diverse issues, but no one cares what their opinions are and they certainly aren’t reported in the press. It’s easy to lament the mainstream media like our President and Sarah Palin love to do, but Winston is the face of an NFL football team, not a politician or an activist.
He needs to put this incident behind him, yes, but only after learning from it – learning to be more diplomatic, to know viscerally that everything he says will be reported by the media and to consider his audience when he speaks. Hey, you don’t see Tom Brady or Bill Belichick making these kinds of gaffs.

I guess I’m just one of the people that respects “real” people. I would rather hear an athlete say something outrageous that they actually believe, even if I find it absurd or offensive, than here them just say what they know the masses want to hear.
I love Ali and detest Islam.
I love Barkley and disagree with him all the time.
I loved hearing Kyrie say he truly believe the earth is flat, even though he knew everyone would think he’s an idiot.
I love TeBow and respect his stand for Christ.
I love the Willams sisters even though I don’t respect the JW religion.
I love guys like Charles Oakley, the Bennett brothers, Richard Sherman, etc., … just be real and let the chips fall where they may! The world needs authenticity!
I love outspoken “real” people and I hope Jameis wll always stay Jameis and be “real”.
