Dare to dream?
The DeSean Jackson Bandwagon driving the speedster on a course for Tampa Bay started to change for this-Joe a few hours prior to the news that America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, declared Jackson is Target-1 when the free agency dinner bell rings next month.
Why did this-Joe begin to change? Because the creator, curator and overall guru of Pro Football Talk is driving the bandwagon.
Joe recently had an epiphany: Joe is inclined to gawk at news babes — national and local — in the mornings before turning to sports and after some grazing on “Good Morning Football,” invariably Joe parks on “Hot Stove” found on MLB Network. Though Joe enjoys football more than baseball, “Hot Stove” is pleasing. Smart talk. No yelling and strong eye-candy, a good mixture to nurse with a large mug of Peet’s Coffee Big Bang.
This was all going on as Florio has the best damned football show on TV, seen weekday mornings on NBC Sports Network. But for whatever reason, Florio’s show, “PFT Live,” no matter how good it is, just wasn’t in Joe’s morning TV wheelhouse routine. Then — ding! — Joe began to DVR it this week. Issue resolved. Duh.
Yesterday, the show was dedicated to the NFC South. There, coming from a commercial break, the bumper was winning Bucs coach Dirk Koetter talking about the lack of explosive plays that doomed the Bucs, and Koetter noting there is only one statistic more important than explosive plays: turnovers.
Anyone who paid attention to the Bucs last year noticed it was the offense, not the defense, that Pearl Harbor’ed the Bucs’ playoff hopes in the final month of the season.
Koetter, in his postseason wrap-up to the 2016 campaign, said the team desperately needed playmakers, YAC and speed on offense.
How to fill that void? Simple, Florio said yesterday: sign Jackson.
“They don’t have the ability to get the football downfield in large chunks,” Florio said of the Bucs. “Last year, they had nothing longer than a 45-yard play, it was a 45-yard run by Jacquizz Rodgers and a 45-yard touchdown catch by Mike Evans, one of the great young receivers — take away “young.” He’s one of the great receivers.
“What can they do to get that kind of punch that they need in the offense? Coincidentally chatter has emerged in recent days of the Buccaneers potentially targeting DeSean Jackson.
“It’s always been [rumored to be Jackson’s destination] Washington and Philly, Washington and Philly. Well, what if the Buccaneers decide they’re going to make the financial investment necessary to get DeSean Jackson? … DeSean Jackson still [has] plenty of gas in the tank and the ability to stretch the field and you think about what DeSean Jackson can do over the top. And that opens up everything for Mike Evans, for Cameron Brate, for the running backs. DeSean Jackson is one of those all-in, take-your-risk, hope-that-it-turns-out-well options for the Buccaneers to pursue and it is fascinating what he can mean for Jameis Winston and Mike Evans.”
For some reason this morning, the coffee tastes better, the oatmeal tastes better, the sun is brighter and the Cardinals in Joe’s backyard are chirping louder. Hell, even the women look hotter.
Could the Bucs truly have a proven speed demon the likes of which the Bucs have not had since the days of Joey Galloway?
First thing first: Let’s hope Bruce Almighty doesn’t franchise Jackson.

I would be beyond stunned if D-Jax gets franchised. He still has juice left, but isn’t worth top 5 WR money imo.
I am also coming around on D-Jax. I never hated the idea of signing him, he was just my #2 choice behind Garcon. What changed it for me was learning that he would like to play in the slot more as his career winds down.
Now I love the idea of having Mike Evans on 1 side, D-Jax in the slot, and give me a value draft pick of Amara Darboh in round 3 or 4 to play on the outside opposite Evans. Then maybe we end up with a high draft pick on a RB. That to me can be a high octane offense.

We’ve got the cash and the need for a guy like Desean Jackson! Even if we need to “overpay” (just a little bit) to secure his services, why not? Let’s go all in on weapons for Jameis and this offense. Jackson (and maybe a bit of O-line help) in free agency, re-sign Jacquizz, and grab a couple more playmakers in Rounds 1 and 2 of the Draft (Cook, OJ Howard, Samuel, McCaffrey, Foreman, Kamara, Hunt, etc…) Our offense could be as potent as the Falcons or any other recent top team!

Well, Im officially on the DJax train. Picking him up along with drafting another WR will be huge for JW3. I also want a TE who can block and receive….just not in the first.
Heres where Im at and of course the drafting is subject to change according to what we do in FA:
Sign WR DJax. S Johnathan Cyprian. DE Calais Campbell. (also want an OT for the right side and a RB)
2 different drafts
1. DE Barnett
2. WR Zay Jones
3. TE Jordan Leggett
4. RB Samaje Perine (may have to trade up) or CB Damontae Kazee
or
1. WR Corey Davis
2. S Obi Mellifonwu
3. TE Jordan Leggett
4. RB Perine (again trade up) or CB Damontae Kazee
I really want DE Barnett more than anything. Look at our division and the passers. We need pass rush and DB. When those improve, look how we do. We also need wide outs obviously. 1&2 in my opinion split with D and O. I know RB is also a need but I feel we can wait until next year to spend a high draft pick on one if we find the right FA. Plus Perine just might be what we need. I left out the later picks because Im sure there’ll be some trading going on.

I wouldnt spend more than a 6th on Mixon if we even decided to. He could go undrafted (and I’d rather stay away). Just too much negative going on there even after he broke the girl’s face.

If we get Jackson, we won’t be drafting another wide reciever. That would give us Evens, Jackson, Humphries, Walker (who is extremely good), and two others. That’s four WRs capable of starting.
No need to waste a pick on the position in such a case. Use that pick on another position of need.
And the only thing I see wrong with your draft scenarios is the lack of OL, Max.

A certain segment (stick carriers, the Joes and The Commish) need to agree not freak out when Desean has as many 2 catch 24yard games as he does 3 catch 120 yard games. He disappears frequently. Im worry of Jackson simply because the Stick carriers won’t understand who he is.

I agree that we can wait a year to draft RB. Plus, Licht seems great at spotting RBs on the street. Nole would throw a fit, and I feel for him, but realistically, we could wait.

I disagree, If we sign D-Jax we should still draft a developmental WR in the middle rounds at least. D-Jax is a short term answer. He can play, but draft and develop someone to take his spot and be our future #2.
As far as RBs go, I again disagree. The experts are saying this is one of the deepest RB classes in years. It would be wise to draft a RB at some point in this draft class. Whether it is early to be a starter or late to develop, they should still draft one.
And about Walker. If he was good and a capable starter in the NFL I dont think he would’ve been playing in the CFL last season. That’s just me tho.

Don’t just look at stats. Just having the vertical threat of D-Jax on the field is something defenses have to plan for. That alone will open the field up for everyone else whether he has 20 yards or 120 yards.

the best part of the WR draft class is after round 2. No need to reach when the Bucs can get a Carlos Henderson in the 3/4 and or Noah Brown in the 4/5.

Heard Tampa Bay from everybody but DJAX. First said DC was home and his family wanted to stay there, then said it would be a great story if he returned to the Eagles, but nothing about the Bucs.
I like DJAX, but he has to like us. It’s called free agency because he’s free to decide where he goes. Money talks, but we shouldn’t over pay. I believe there is some interest or our Budding Franchise QB wouldn’t be doing a PSA for Jackson.
Before I put him in pewter and red, I need to hear from DJax on how much he loves sunshine and orange juice!

I’m not thinking about stats… I’m think about my own sanity as over reacting stick carriers start screaming when isn’t productive in a loss. Some games he will contribute but in a gerald McCoy way where it’s not obvious in the stat line

Oh would I love to be Desean Jackson’s agent right now. And MaxMax, I’m with you on the FA signings IF we can pull those off … Jackson, Cyprien AND Campbell plus an OT address 4 of our biggest needs & would be a real coup d’etat). And picking up a DE+WR+TE+RB in the 1st 4 rnds of the draft would be ideal, although the names & draft order is obviously out of our control.

Sign DJax and draft John Ross rather it be in the first or 2nd round. Look what Licht did last year. Signed Grimes, drafted Hargreaves, signed Ayers, and drafted spence. If Licht keeps the same trend going we will be a force to be reckoned with!!!

Kenny Britt for the win. I wouldn’t mind DJax, but he is up there in age and usually doesn’t last a full season without being injured, so keep that mind. Just don’t expect DJax to be your number two receiver, he’d be a role player, Joe…

How often do free agents go out of their way to mention teams they want to play for? And when they do actually do that it is usually veiwed as a way to stir up intefest in them. The plain fact about FA is that players want to play for whoever will pay them the most money.

It really shouldn’t have taken all that much of an epiphany to realive what a guy with his speed could do for the offense. Not every signing needs to be on a long term mindset. You sign Jackson to a 4 year deal with most of the money loaded into the first two years and develop a mid rounder to take his spot after that.

Bucs can sign all the free agents they like that being said, until the leader of the losing culture is eradicated or at least neutered the bucs will not contend consistently. Cancer93 will hold the bucs back either by injury as he is also the leader of the fragile 3 at DT or via mentally weak soft play.

@joeypoppems … “The plain fact about FA is that players want to play for whoever will pay them the most money.” For the most part I agree, but there is a caveat: some players (not all) will take somewhat less to stay with their team. For instance, Calais Campbell has been with Arizona since being drafted. i wouldn’t be at all surprised if he opts for a 2-3 yr contract from them, even at less money than what the Bucs might offer, to finish out his career there. Same could’ve been said in our case for Brooks, Sapp & Lynch from what I remember reading at the time; we just never gave them the opportunity.

I think Kenny Britt is maybe the most talented FA receiver , I fully expect the Bucs to have him one or two on their radar . He checks every box besides maybe his past off field . Britt is mega talented and needs a take charge qb and WR coach . check and check , two more checks !!

If you’re in the DC area perhaps you can confirm what the mindset is…I stumbled upon a WAPO sports article claiming the ‘Skins need to franchise Cousins not either of the two WR’s.
@DR Agree with your caveat about hometown discounts and I think they vary.
E.G. The major reason the Browns have a shot at keeping Pryor is not because he feels he owes the organization but rather his hometown area ala LeBron.
If I may I’d like to add another caveat especially for a player in the latter stages of his career like DJAX. He already has more money than we can even dream about…not that money will not be a significant influence…but at his age another major influence for many players is whether a team is ready to contend or are they in rebuild mode.
I do not believe DJAX would have considered us at all prior to this year. IF DJAX comes to us that’s going to be a great sign that players around the league believe in #3…Koetter and what’s happening with our Bucs. GO BUCS!!!

With all do respect to Robert Woods, Marquise Goodwin, Markus Wheaton, and Kenny Stills… why these guys? Desean Jackson is a real vertical threat and someone defenses have to gameplan for. Nobody last year was wondering how to stop these guys last year.
Lets stop trying to be cute and go for the proven threat instead of trying to save money on these role players.

He brought up that potent Oregon St.Offense w/ the Rodger Brothers & Markus Wheaton. So he has inside track on his style of play – and would know how to use him.

This is an article from a NJ newspaper, written 2 days ago………Although Jackson insisted he wants to re-sign with the Redskins, he also made it clear that he will sign with the team that offers him the most money.
“My numbers and my production on the field speak for itself,” Jackson said to CSN earlier this month. “The ball is in my court a little bit … whenever the offers come in, (I’ll) take the best offer.”
It’s my personal belief that Jackson is seeking a 4-5 year deal in the $40-45 million range, with $20-25 million in guarantee money. And he probably has figured in the money that he can save in Income Tax if he sign with the Bucs. Jackson and his Agent has created an imaginary bidding war between 3-4 teams. But the Bucs are probably the only team that’s willing to give him the contract that he seek.

Robert Woods makes sense to me, because he’s 24 years old. In his 4 seasons with the Bills, he averages 51 receptions a season. He’s in the 60% catch%, he is a good fit in this offense. We’re not looking for a #1 WR, we’re looking for 2-3, and Woods can be a 2-3. We can draft another 2-3 in Round 1-2. Draft KR/5th WR in the 5th round, someone like FSU WR Kermit Whitfield. And it won’t cost us that much money. Buffalo was a running team, not a passing team like Washington.

Becoming more convinced goal should be sign 3 free agents: WR DJax, S Tony Jefferson, DT Jonathan Hankins. Resign Gholston, Rodgers, Shepherd, McDougald, Spence & Robinson. Go into round 1 of draft with strategy of best player available(prefer TE OJ Howard). Rounds 2-7 take: DE, RB(Hunt or Perone) WR(Westbrook) DT, S, FB. Playmakers for Jameis & Depth on D will make us a playoff team.

Just hope the Washington team applies the franchise tag to Cousins, which is likely as they don’t have another QB option… Then, Jameis personality has a real chance to get Jackson to Tampa, assuming the front office wants to put the money there… which isn’t necessarily a given.

If the Bucs match the Eagles offer, I think there is a 95%+ chance DJax signs wiith the Bucs as he wants to win and wants a star QB throwing the ball to him … and he knows Wentz is no Famous Jameis Winston imo!

The guy is injury prone and a drama queen. I don’t actually mind the drama queen part, this team has been as boring as it gets for so long I think half the nation forgets the team exists. But the injury prone part is the problem I have issue with. Tweak hamstring will be something we hear about 10 times during the season, it will be why he can’t practice and he won’t develop any chemistry with Jameis. If the Bucs sign him I hope they sign another WR that can be a 2 or 3 as well because I just don’t think we’ll get much out of Dexter. But if the Bucs sign him I really do hope for the best and would love to be wrong – but I just don’t see it happening. Someone like Kenny Stills I think would be better fit, pair him with someone like Kenny Britt and now you got some real good quality WRs to go with the elite Evans.
