Charles Harris In Round 1?
February 21st, 2017Would the Bucs dare draft the best player available with the No. 19 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft?
Yes, it’s possible general manager Jason Licht could avoid making a need-based pick and go defensive end on Day 1 of the draft.
The Bucs need #WeaponsForWinston, but don’t pretend pass rushing help is crossed off the prime big board at One Buc Palace.
Hell, the Bucs are considering giving homegrown defensive end Will Gholston, a part-time player and with limited pass-rush ability, a fat new contract. If you sign Gholston, then more edge rush help is seriously needed, preferably at the discounted rookie wage scale.
Noah Spence is coming off shoulder surgery. Robert Ayers will be 32 coming off an injury-plagued season, and Jacquies Smith had his knee carved up five months ago.
Former Bucs tight end Anthony Becht, who now calls college games for ESPN and works for Buccaneers.com, hopped on WDAE-AM 620 today and talked about the Bucs’ draft prospects.
Becht said if a true weapons like tight end O.J. Howard or beastly receivers Corey Davis and/or Mike Williams don’t land in the Bucs’ lap, then he would strongly consider Missouri defensive end Charles Harris.
Becht said he called Harris’ first college game and has been a big fan ever since. He called Harris “an exceptional pass rusher,” in addition to his ability in the run game.
On Howard, the talented Alabama tight end, teaming with Cameron Brate, Becht was lukewarm but acknowledged the tandem would be “a mismatch problem for pretty much every team in the NFL.”
Joe won’t shed a tear if the Bucs draft Harris, although Joe would be sure to hammer a wall and nearby windows if the Bucs drafted him without securing a true No. 2 receiver in free agency.

NOW THIS is a pick I’d TRULY be STOKED with
February 21st, 2017 at 1:14 pm
Calm down Joe. Jameis is gonna bring us DJax and Campbell.
February 21st, 2017 at 1:14 pm
Pass on these players that performed with average results and did not dominate even the smaller schools, I know the college game is more up temp get the ball out quicker than the NFL, but MIzzou was not a good team the past few years and he was ok n that team, bucs can get legit NFL players for defense through FA, the bucs need a difference maker in the draft that can play now
February 21st, 2017 at 1:22 pm
This pick is better than drafting a RB or TE in the 1st round. ….Weapons for the Bucs…
February 21st, 2017 at 1:24 pm
But if we go DE..I would love for us to draft Taco Charlton.
February 21st, 2017 at 1:26 pm
As Joe said, must have 2nd WR locked down by pick #19 or the world will know what position we are drafting here.
February 21st, 2017 at 1:27 pm
The one thing we can all be sure of is that Everyone in that draft room knows more about these kids than we do.
February 21st, 2017 at 1:28 pm
I trust that Licht will look long and hard at the free agents available vs what he thinks will be available in the draft and act accordingly. There is a good chance the two best recievers and running backs will be gone by the 19th selection. It seems likely that WR needs to be addressed in FA. I am not a big believer in John Ross and his slight frame. RB can probably be addressed in later rounds assuming Cook is off the board at 19. If that happens I am fine going DE in the first round. A team’s draft board is usually a combination of both need and talent. If DE is considered a big need there then go ahead and pull the trigger. It isn’t the most exciting pick but I welcome all talent.
February 21st, 2017 at 2:05 pm
@sb… that’s what I thought too, then we go out and spend two picks and trade up for a kicker. The worst kicker in the nfl last year.
February 21st, 2017 at 2:11 pm
mike…or spend a 2nd round pick on a Drunk. When Wr Allen Robinson, Jarvis Landry, Devante Adams are available.
February 21st, 2017 at 2:12 pm
I am struggling so hard trying to figure what the best way to use our #19 pick is. I like the idea of defense. Idk if Charles Harris would be my pick tho. DE makes a lot of sense but there are DBs I would draft before Harris.
I like the upside of Taco Charlton. His technique is pretty raw right now imo. Derek Barnett is my favorite of the DEs that could be there at #19. His scouting report on CBS compares him to our own Robert Ayers. Either way I am watching CBs right now and I would take both Florida CBs over Harris (Quincy Wilson and Teez Tabor)
February 21st, 2017 at 2:22 pm
Rushing Downs
• DE – Robert Ayers
• DT *Calais Campbell
• DT- Gerald McCoy
• DE- William Gholston
On Passing Downs
• DE-Noah Spence
• DT *Calais Campbell
• DT-Gerald McCoy
• DE *Charles Harris
W/ the following players in the rotation – to keep bodies fresh
• DT Clinton McDonald
• DT DaVonte Lambert
• DE Ryan Russell

I’d rather take Cameron Sutton over any of those 1st round corners (that you spoke of) – in the 2nd or 3rd round.
February 21st, 2017 at 2:30 pm
Joe – Ya’ll seriously sleepin’ on HB Evan Ingram. This kid is the truth
February 21st, 2017 at 2:55 pm
I haven’t watched Sutton yet but I know he was at the Senior Bowl. Can’t really form an opinion on him yet.
February 21st, 2017 at 3:09 pm
We’ve had how many DE bust over the last 10 years??? But you feel taking one make more sense than a RB in the first round. The logic yo.. I struggle to see yours.
February 21st, 2017 at 3:28 pm
You can get WRs in the 2nd and corners in the 3rd – but rarely do you get starting d-lineman in the those rounds. It’s not a priority but it makes sense if he’s the best available and it’s not really close.
February 21st, 2017 at 3:41 pm
Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun
So because we”ve had Defense End Bust. We should stop drafting them?
Hey bruh I get it – U won’t use to draft Dalvin Cook.
Like I’ve said befor “IF” Dalvin falls in our lap at 19 – I’m with U
But like all things in life – you must have a contingency plan.
Mine is to draft a solid defensive line prospect in the 1st round.
February 21st, 2017 at 3:45 pm
We KNOW that we need a pass-rush. We REALLY KNOW that we need weapons for Winston. If it’s the right player, draft him.
February 21st, 2017 at 3:46 pm
I still haven’t watched Cam Sutton yet. All I have done is check his size from the Senior Bowl weigh ins and to me that’s a negative on him. I can live with a 5′ 10″ CB, but 180 lbs is rough. Plus he has pretty short arms.
I will give him the benefit of the doubt and actually watch him later tho.

Joeypoppems
Check’em out Joey- and get back at me
February 21st, 2017 at 4:02 pm
I don’t think anyone would complain – “IF” we walked out the draft with…
1st. Charles Harris, DE, Missouri
2nd. Evan Engram, TE, Ole Miss
3rd. Zay Jones, WR, East Carolina
4th. Samaje Perine, RB, Oklahoma
5th. Damontae Kazee, CB, San Diego St.
6th. Jalen Reeves-Maybin, LB, Tennessee
7th. Chad Kelly, QB, Ole Miss
February 21st, 2017 at 4:03 pm
Id prefer demarcus walker in the second round
February 21st, 2017 at 4:09 pm
Or
1st. Taco Charlton, DE/DT, Michigan
2nd. Evan Engram, HB, Ole Miss
3rd. Cameron Sutton, CB/S, Tennessee
4th. Chris Godwin, WR, Penn State
5th. Joe Mixon,RB, Oklahoma
6th. Jalen Reeves-Maybin, LB, Tennessee
7th. Chad Kelly, QB, Ole Miss
February 21st, 2017 at 4:34 pm
“avoid making a need-based pick and go defensive end on Day 1 of the draft”
Lost me here.
How is DE NOT a need???? We don’t have a dominant one at all!
February 21st, 2017 at 4:38 pm
I’m against Calais Campbell. Frankly, I think he’s not the answer.
If we can’t get JPP, then we have to draft a DE in 1st or 2nd.
February 21st, 2017 at 4:41 pm
The main reason why I think Campbell is the answer over JPP is because of Campbell’s ability to play inside
February 21st, 2017 at 4:52 pm
Joeypoppems
EXACTLY!!!
February 21st, 2017 at 4:54 pm
Joeypoppems, compare their ages. Campbell is a short term answer. JPP is younger, and a better pass rusher. We don’t even need an inside guy.
February 21st, 2017 at 5:08 pm
LUVMYBUCS…your 2nd Mock is spot on.
February 21st, 2017 at 6:01 pm
@Bonzai
Exactly, Campbell is a short term answer which is a good thing if we are building through the draft. Sign vets to short term deals to come in and fill needs then draft their replacements. That is how building through the draft works.
We signed Grimes, Drafted VH3. We signed Daryl Smith, drafted Devonta Bond. We signed Robert Ayers, drafted Noah Spence. And I would say a DT next to GMC is a bigger need than another edge guy, but I don’t see any DTs this year worth our 1st round pick. Johnathon Allen will be a top 10 pick and the next tier of Brantley, Wormley, Jaleel Johnson, Watkins, etc. all have Day 2 grades from what I have seen.
We should be doing the same on Offense this year especially since it worked on defense. Sing one of the older vet receivers (Garcon or D-Jax), draft a WR. Sign a vet Center, draft a development Center. I would rather do that than give out big money contracts to FA because they have a big name.
And there is only a couple year difference in their age. It’s not like JPP is in his early 20’s
February 21st, 2017 at 8:30 pm
Im all about DE with our 1st! I’d prefer Solomon or Barnett, but we’ll see. Im also all about getting a WR. One of those 2 will be met with either FA or our first 2 picks.
February 21st, 2017 at 8:37 pm
@Luv, whats up Brother…..I like that selection, just not qb chad kelly….I have some earlier shivers from him when he first started at clemson (right down the road from me) that he just never seemed to shake……I mean, eh, 7th’s are usually wasted picks anyway, but I’d rather it be an O line.
February 21st, 2017 at 9:32 pm
@Dushty Rhothdes
“Pass on these players that performed with average results and did not dominate even the smaller schools”
I just watched his highlights where he gets two nasty sacks against the Gators and Georgia in each game.
If it were to be a DE in round 1 and both Harris and Barnett were still available, I’m going with Barnett all day. Hell even if DE wasn’t our first choice for the first and Barnett is still there I’m taking him all day (unless it’s Corey Davis).
February 21st, 2017 at 10:22 pm
Is Chad Kelly the QB who got uninvited to the Combine because he had an incident where he got into a bar fight and then threatened to shoot the place up? If he is then no thanks lol.
February 21st, 2017 at 10:39 pm
@ LUV Leggett is going to be a great TE and seems to be one of the few people are calling an everydown TE. He also had a huge game against Bama in the NC and that’s as close to an NFL defense as you are going to see in college.
I like the pick of Maybin in the sixth.
February 21st, 2017 at 11:17 pm
MadMax
Whats good brotha? Hope all is well
Yeah – I hear you about Kelly
But for some Odd reason – I think the kid mature, and become a solid pro.
February 21st, 2017 at 11:19 pm
My most recent mock involved multiple trade backs in the first round when none of the offensive players I wanted were available. There could have still been the chance to trade up with future picks and get a big name too.
2. Marlon Humphrey
2. Caleb Brantley
2. Ethan Pocic
2. Obi Melifonwu
3. Jordan Leggett
3. Zay Jones
3. Kyle Fuller
4. Samaje Perine
4. Taywan Taylor
4. Jordan Morgan
5. Devonte Fields
6. Jaylen Reeves-Maybin
7. Freddie Stevenson
February 21st, 2017 at 11:19 pm
USFBUC
Leggett is solid – he stands out quickly on film.
Mostly for all the right reasons.
Will be interesting to see – his transition to the next level.
February 21st, 2017 at 11:29 pm
*But for some Odd reason – I think the kid *can mature, and become a solid pro.
February 22nd, 2017 at 1:44 am
I rather take Demarcus walker in the second
February 22nd, 2017 at 8:38 am
USF, Freddie Stevenson would make a great late round pick. He can run, block and catch, what else do you need in a FB? Would love to see a lead blocker in our offense at times.
